LEST WE FORGET
By Barbara Watson
It has been just over 100
years since the war to end all
wars was fought. That was
World War I, and we have
had World War II and the
Korean War, the Vietnam
War, battles in Iraq, battles in
Africa, and peacekeeping in
Cyprus and Yugoslavia. In
each of these, young soldiers
have been injured physically
and mentally and thousands
have died. Some young people have refused to fight,
have escaped to other countries to avoid having to shoot
other young people, and
they’ve been branded cowards for this refusal. The
whole situation is complex,
except for some people who
see it in black and white.
A young Scot, not old
enough to fight in 1914, was
accosted by two older women
in an elevator at the beginning of the war that we are
focusing on this year. They
showed their contempt for
him by handing him a white feather.
That feather signified that they considered him a coward. When he
reached the right age, he eventually
made it to the war, to Belgium and
those terrible fighting fields of Ypres.
There he met a young woman whom
he took home to be his wife. But Gottlieve was Belgian, a foreigner, and
not accepted in Ayr, Scotland. His
family rejected him permanently for
marrying outside their social sphere.
This is not an isolated story of war
and then love.
Young men fighting in wars live
lives unimaginable by those of us
who do not fight for our country and
for our way of life. Their humanity is
not cancelled when they are sent to
fight the enemy, nor do they behave
like mindless robots. They have the
same emotions that you and I do
when we have a conflict with our
brothers or sisters or neighbours, or
when we express extreme dislike of
this or that politician. Some of them
bring home a woman to marry, or
nightmares that destroy the marriages they put on hold.
War is a terrible thing, and not to
be engaged in lightly. Poet soldiers
have written about their feelings as
they heard bombs dropping around
them. Wilfred Owen wrote a poem
We shal

between 1917 and 1918
about his gassed and dying
comrades lying in a wagon
that their mates trudged
wearily behind:
“If you could hear, at every
jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the
froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as
the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on
innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell
with such high zest
To children ardent for some
desperate glory,
The old lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori”
(It is sweet and right to die
for one’s country.)
On Sunday, November 2,
musicians from our city will
remember those young people who fought because they
answered a call to defend
what they held dear. No soldiers from that war are still
among the living, but you can
see their names written on
memorials and hear their stories from
their relatives.
The program features music that
you will recognize and music that
might be new to you. The Allegro
band under the direction of Bill Wahl
will begin this homage to those who
fought for their country. Bill says that
music can celebrate valour, or
express the grief that we feel when
we consider these turbulent times in
our country’s history. There will be a
medley from the Legion Songbook
with pieces you are sure to have
heard. A particularly memorable

Two Minutes
By: Hareem Masroor, Nanaimo, BC
Two minutes of silence is all we have to remember the fallen. I look up
and see the veterans. The medals on their uniforms gleam in the sunlight. The
call for the two minute silence was made. As their heads hung, their faces reveal
sorrow from the memories of the war, however there’s also a glimpse of
strength, pride and relief. I turn my head to the left and see a row of brightly
coloured poppies pinned onto the shirts of those I see. For most of us kids it
was unnatural to be in such a quiet setting, but once I closed my eyes I began
to dwell into the mindset of why we remember. It was here when I realize that
there was more to this silence than simply trying to remember soldiers, nurses
and others who participated meet horrific ends.
These two minutes allow us to think deeply. War was able to destroy lives
of so many families and innocent people, but it wasn’t able to destroy the hope
that clinged within them, the action to carry on nor the ability to ever say our
county “will never win.” It is this significance that marks an important feeling in
our hearts. The reason we have silence is to mark the end of war.We remember
more than lost lives within two minutes. We reflect on what the soldiers were
fighting for, how they chose to enter darkness in order to give us light. Their
harsh conditions brought us all comfort and freedom, their struggles on the
battlefield is what gave us a strong country, their lives were given to let our
children move on and start life at a better place.
It seemed as if the whole place fell still, frozen in time. This moment is
when we all put aside our boundaries such as gender, religion and class to
unite in remembrance. The silence breaks with a strong sound coming from a
trumpet as it plays the song “The Fallen.” Afterwards the ceremony concludes
with speeches and then a last march accompanied by bagpipes. I noticed tears
spring from a veteran’s eyes. It filled me with just as much sadness. I couldn’t
imagine the pain and sorrow it must have been to watch comrades die in front
of your eyes or to know that you couldn’t see the faces of your loved ones ever
again. After all I was just a kid and the idea of war was so distant. It really is
admirable when you think about it, these people were just neighbours and
good citizens, yet they had the courage to fight in war and leave their homes
to protect the future of their country and generations. To me that deserves a
huge recognition and award. I walked over to the veteran and plainly replied,
“thank you for your service and God bless you all for what you did.” I know that
words can’t truly express the debt that we owe them but it still felt right to
show this person how grateful I was for his and all the fellows veterans services.
Remembrance day, it comes only once a year, but on this one day the
heart of the ceremony comes from the silence. It gives us some understanding
about war and the effects of sacrifice, a lesson seldomly seen and also a lesson
that can never be truly grasped from books. We recognize the efforts of mere
strangers who placed themselves either at land or sea to make sure that we’re
given the opportunities that we have today. This gives us an infinite way of
honouring, respecting and giving our thanks to these soldiers. I stand taller,
walk prouder and feel confident that I am a Canadian. What’s great is that I’ve
learned most of this through silence, a two minute silence.

cold, please don’t forget about your pets. Make sure
they have a safe, warm, dry place to spend the day

piece is Il Silenzio, with a solo
by a young lady, Abby Hanney. It
will be hard to keep your eyes
dry during these pieces.
Members of the South
Alberta Pipes and Drums will
perform Amazing Grace and
Highland Cathedral. The last
was apparently the favourite
piece of the Queen Mother. It
was performed in Ottawa on
October 28, 2014, at the funeral
of Corporeal Nathan Cirillo who
died guarding the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
Evan Tonin and the Tribute
Singers will add their acknowledgement in song of the service
the youth of that generation
gave to the world. Her assembly
of singers will perform more
recognizable songs including,
among others, Till We Meet
Again and The White Cliffs of
Dover. Evan and her singers are
enthusiastic and will probably
make you want to sing along.
But, wait for Evan’s cue.
After the intermission, the
Allegro Band will continue with
selections from World War II,

This musical program will
take us from sorrow to a desire
not to lose heart. It is of paramount importance not to forget.
A vital question we must all ask
ourselves is what to do with that
knowledge.

Volunteering: Six Ways Volunteering Can Boost Your Career
Do any of the following
apply to you?
• Are you looking for a
job but don’t have the
experience you need? But
you can’t get experience
because you can’t get a
job?
• Do you need more
skills or a better network so
you can find work?
• Are you thinking of
making a change in your
career but unsure about
what you want to do?
If you answered yes to
any of these questions, volunteering could be the
boost your career needs.
When you volunteer,
you share your skills and
time with people and organizations in the community
without expecting to be
paid. Volunteering takes
you right into the workplace, giving you a chance
to build your experience
and demonstrate your
employability.
Here are six ways volunteering can help you
reach your career goals:
Volunteering gives you
experience.
Most employers want
workers who have workplace experience. This kind
of
experience
shows
employers that you can
manage your time, complete your tasks, get along
with others and make a
commitment. Your volunteer record proves to an
employer that you have
workplace experience.
When you volunteer
you meet and work with
people with different attitudes and worldviews. This
experience shows employers that you can be flexible
and adaptable—qualities
they want their employees
to have.
Volunteering helps you
develop skills.
Volunteering gives you
a chance to build on skills
you already have and learn
new ones. For example, as a
volunteer you might be
able to try out a new computer program, use a second language, develop customer service skills or
practise speaking in public.
If you’re employed, you
may want to look for volunteer opportunities that
strengthen skills you have
but are not currently using
in your work. For example, if
you work on your own in a
parts warehouse, volunteering for site hospitality
at a festival could help you
maintain and improve your
people skills.
Be realistic about your
current skill level when you
apply to volunteer. An organization may need people
whose skill level is more
advanced than yours in the
position you want. You may
need to develop your skills
before taking on a more
challenging position.

We thank all applicants, however, only those selected
for an interview will be contacted.
Volunteering expands
your network.
Your network is all the
people you know and all
the people they know.
Every new person you
meet becomes part of your
network and may potentially connect you with
other contacts and career
opportunities.
Volunteering gives you
the chance to meet new
people and through them
expand your network,
opening up opportunities
you might not have otherwise. Keep a list of the contacts you make volunteering—staff, board members,
clients, other volunteers,
suppliers and others. You
never know who might
help you and how.
Volunteering lets you
check out an occupation
or industry.
When you’re choosing
a career direction or thinking about a career change,
volunteering gives you a
chance to explore different
occupations and industry
sectors. You get to know
the people, challenges and
rewards involved and gain
a better understanding of
the roles and jobs available.
For example, as a hospital
volunteer, you’re exposed
to a wide range of health
care workers, from front
line nursing and medical
staff to program administrators.
Volunteer experience
in a specific field or industry can make your resumé
or application stand out
when you’re competing for
a job or applying to a postsecondary program in that
field. For example, volunteer experience at an animal shelter might increase
your chances of being
admitted to an animal
health technology program.
Volunteering builds your
confidence.
Maintaining your confidence is especially important if you’ve been unemployed for a while or
discouraged in your search
for a new job or career
direction. Volunteering can
help you feel active, useful
and productive—all great
ways to increase your confidence.
Volunteering helps you
get to know yourself.
Knowing yourself—
your skills, accomplishments, interests and values—is the foundation of
career success. Volunteer
experience can be a good
way to learn more about
yourself and your potential
to grow and develop. It also
gives you a chance to find
out how other people view
you and your strengths.
Volunteering is a winwin situation. By helping
others, you have the opportunity to boost not only
your career but your own
well-being. When you volunteer in a role that’s right
for you, everybody comes
out ahead.
