STAFF UPDATES
Jon Richards
Ethan Wing
Please help us welcome our newest editions to the TRS team, Jon Richards
and Ethan Wing. Jon is our new Supervising Recreation Specialist, upon
Jessica Battaglia’s retirement. Jon is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation
Specialist and before joining our team, he was a Regional Sports Manager at
Special Olympics, Executive Director and Program Director at Adaptive
Sports and Recreation Association. He enjoys spending time with his wife
and 18 month old daughter and competing in triathlons. You will find Ethan
assisting at our many programs as our newest Recreation Leader II. He has a
Masters in Recreation, Sport and Tourism and has been working in
recreation for over 8 years running sports, aquatics and senior programming,
as well as adaptive basketball and swim programs. In his free time, he plays
basketball, writes really bad science fiction and scuba dives.
Tammy Brooks, Recreation Specialist, and Rita Morris, Clerical Assistant II, are no longer with TRS. Tammy
has transferred to Senior Citizen Services and Rita is working in Balboa Park’s Rose Garden and Butterfly
Garden. Since their new job assignments are close by, I’m sure we will still be seeing quite a bit of them.

DSAC CORNER/DONOR APPRECIATION
Attention: Ralphs &
Food 4 Less Shoppers
Disabled Services Advisory Council, Inc. (DSAC) is
a non-profit advisory organization to Therapeutic
Recreation Services. Their purpose is to offer
support and promotion of quality activities, act as a
liaison between the department and the community
at-large, administer contract programs for persons
with disabilities, and provide public relations and
fundraising support. The Board is made up of
volunteer members from various agencies that serve
persons with disabilities, parents, businesspersons,
advocates, and other interested persons. Meetings
are held on the 2nd Wednesday evening of each
month, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1 at the War Memorial
Building. Agendas and minutes are posted in Room
6 at the War Memorial Building. Please call Kristi
Fenick at (619) 533-6333 for more information.
Thank you to everyone who has been
participating
in
our
grocery
fundraising program (nearly $400
was raised this past year). Ralphs requires everyone to
re-enroll in the program every year. Please log onto
www.ralphs.com or call 619) 525-8247 and we will
send you a letter to bring to Ralphs and/or Food 4 Less
to register or re-enroll. Every time you shop, a
percentage of your purchase will be donated to us. It’s
so simple and doesn’t cost a thing to you! All
donations are used directly for our programs so we
need lots of shoppers. Thanks so much for your
continued support!
DONOR APPRECIATION
DSAC and TRS are so appreciative of individual and agency donations. With this financial assistance, we
are able to continue to provide quality programming and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities
through recreation. The following donations came just in time for Summer 2014.
Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp
Thanks to Torrey Pines Kiwanis (TPK) and Adaptive Sports
& Recreation (ASRA) for their generous donations which
assisted with staffing costs for Wheelchair Sports Camp
2014. With an $8,000 donation from TPK and $2,661 from
ASRA, 49 campers, ages 4-18, with physical disabilities
enjoyed a week of adaptive land and water sports.
CECO Grant
Beach Wheelchair at
Mission Beach.
Fantastic week at Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp.
The San Diego County Employees Charitable
Organization (CECO) awarded DSAC a $3,879 grant
to purchase two beach wheelchairs and 25 life jackets.
In addition to being utilized six days a week in Mission
Beach (see page 15), the beach wheelchairs came in
handy this past summer at Camp at the Bay, Camp Wet
& Wild and Wheelchair Sports Camp. The life jackets
were utilized this past summer and will be used for
many more summers ahead. Many thanks to CECO
once again for supporting our programs and enhancing Enjoying the beach with family.
the lives of San Diegans with and without disabilities.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
A WORD FROM OUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
What a whirlwind of a summer! Thank you very much for sharing your summer with us
and the participants. The summer camps were a success because of all the great volunteers
who helped out. We received an abundance of positive comments about our volunteers
from campers and their loved ones! We appreciate the help. With the holidays around the
corner, the Fall offers lots of fun opportunities for volunteers, including Halloween parties,
Thanksgiving feasts, and the Holiday Carnival! Don’t forget to check your emails and sign up for
programs. Volunteer slots fill up fast! In addition, our annual Best of the West Quad Rugby Tournament
requires lots of volunteer help. Contact Marisol for more info!
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
-Mahatma Gandhi
Thanks to each of you for making a difference in the lives of others every, single day.
Marisol Mendoza
[email protected], (619) 236-7753
We are grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers who dedicate so much
time and energy to help make our programs possible. Check out this
quarter’s “Top Bananas,” exceptional volunteers who rise above and beyond
their call of duty. Please congratulate them if you see them at programs.
Point Loma Nazarene University
Melinda Reyes and Brianna Winger
Melinda and Briana first heard about TRS at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU)
through Agape Ministry, formerly known as Special Friends. Melinda volunteers because
she loves helping out and meeting new people. Brianna loves volunteering because she says
at the end of the day the participants she helped end up helping her more than she could
ever help them. When they are not volunteering or studying, Melinda likes Polynesian
dancing with her sister and Brianna enjoys the beach, reading, and eating ice cream.
Melinda has plans to earn a Masters in Public Health and Brianna hopes to find a job in San
Diego post graduation from PLNU.
USS Ronald Reagan Volunteers
The USS Ronald Reagan first contacted Therapeutic Recreation Services when they
were out at sea and since their return in August they have volunteered at Tandem,
Leisure Seekers, and have assisted in creating our dream craft room, logging in over
100 hours! The group decided to volunteer because they consider themselves a moving
city with every talent known to man and they want to be a blessing to their new city as
much as possible. They are a multicultural group with many interests and talents. The group enjoys traveling,
hiking, fishing, helping others in need, painting, reading, shopping, working out, cooking and eating.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Happy Birthday to all our volunteers with

Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (619) 236-7753, or
