1931, in its Royal Mint case of issue
Mr Soulsby with a number of other miners
displayed great gallantry and perseverance
during rescue operations after a violent
firedamp explosion at the Bentley Colliery,
Doncaster, Yorkshire in the afternoon of 20th
November 1931. In total disregard of their own
safety and in danger of further explosions the
rescue teams extricated the injured and
conveyed them to a place of safety. During
these operations a further explosion occurred
at approximately 10.30p.m. which injured
some of the rescue party, this was shortly
followed by another. Of approximately 47 men
working on or near the coal face at the time of
the original explosion, 45 were killed or later
succumbed to their injuries
