Dennis’ Dialogue:
Historic Annual 160th Session
PLANTING FOR THE FUTURE
Trying to report on this session is a major challenge. To say it was historic, a watershed or
mountaintop experience is an understatement. Messengers made several decisions that will
shape the future direction of the association and made a new commitment to reach our own
community.
The messengers approved a motion from the Vision Planning Committee to complete phase
two of the Missions Resource Center. It will include the construction of a large meeting
area that will seat 160+ with the vision of providing a place for new church starts. Church planting is urgently
needed in our county as we have tripled in population in the past 20 years and even with the growth experienced by the number of new member congregations, we have continued to become a smaller percentage of the
residents living here. The current large room will be reconfigured into three good sized conference rooms
available for Bible study, education and other break out functions. The project includes the obtaining of
one- half acre of adjoining land to increase parking capacity. This will make the Mission Resource Center the
largest associational facility in North Carolina and greatly expand our outreach, educational and conferencing
capabilities.
The cost is estimated to be $ 400,000 to $415,000 and depends on the contribution of our volunteers to finish
the interior work.
A 5-K-2 challenge to raise $100,000 over the next two years has been given to our members and congregations. If 20 people and/or congregations will commit to contributing $5,000 over the next two years, we will
meet our goal. You may even form a team to support your response to the challenge. Contributions of any
amount are encouraged and welcomed by the association and may be sent to Union Baptist Association, PO
Box 596, Monroe, N.C. 28111. Exceeding the challenge will enable the earlier retirement of the balance and
save valuable mission dollars. This is a genuine opportunity to plant seeds for many decades to come and is a
powerful way to join the Lord in a ministry of outreach and evangelism. Is the Lord laying this challenge on
your heart or the heart of your church? There are individuals and congregations who can meet this challenge
today. Let me reach out to you and urge you to join me in the making this commitment. I would welcome the
opportunity to speak and pray with you as you are led to join this partnership in church planting.
You may also like to know that the Missions Committee brought the name of The Invitation Church to the
association for approval of watch care into our fellowship. The mission of church planting has already begun!
In closing, I would like to share the last paragraph of my annual “State Of The Union” report with you:
“Finally, let me say a word not about our past journey together but of the future God has for Union Baptist
Association. There is strength and opportunity in working together while respecting the freedom and vision of
each of our churches. The greatest days of this body are before it, not behind it. Dream the dream again but
cast a clear vision of where God is leading this fellowship. Don’t question the doors the Lord opens but step
through them in faith, vision and commitment. He will provide the resources and the harvest, our task is to
plant the seeds for those who will come after our share of the work is finished.”
Consider this………
BI-VOCATIONAL MINISTRIES COORDINATOR
Rev. Tony Medlin
Thank you to the churches and messengers that joined in the Annual Fall Session of Union Baptist Association. The
Union Baptist Association was formed in 1854. The association exists because the churches decided they could do
more together than separately. They also joined together for fellowship purposes. The Baptist churches in Union
County shared a common theology. They were committed to a common mandate of carrying out Christ’s mission in
Acts 1:8. We as Southern Baptists have a great heritage.
Thinking about this, I remembered that my mother was raised a Primitive Baptist, but later changed churches to become a missionary
Baptist. Missionary Baptist came to be known as Southern Baptist. The title was missionary because they believed in missions. We don’t
use that title today, but we have the same mandate that formed the name. Today, we hear phrases like ‘Baptists on Mission’. So the title
changed, but the meaning is the same.
Baptists formed an association to fellowship and work together. Sometimes I hear people say they are Independent Baptists. I am not sure
what that means. Even the so called independent churches work with other independent churches. Southern Baptists are ‘self-governing’ or
autonomous. That means the church decides it policies, and direction. I am not sure a church can be more independent than Southern
Baptists. The church can choose the Pastor, where they spend money, how to receive members, worship style, worship music, what
programs to be used, what missions to support or none, version of the Bible to use, type of dress, and you can continue to add to the list.
This sounds and looks very independent to me. Yes, Southern Baptists are very independent, but choose to work together to support
missions and for fellowship.
Southern Baptist churches can even be part of the local association and never participate in anything that the association provides and
promotes. But it would appear to me that at least churches would send messengers to the annual session once a year for fellowship and to
show they want to work together in missions. Let’s encourage all our churches to associate together by attending associational meetings!
WMU NEWS
For all the blessings of the year, for all the friends we hold so dear,
For peace on earth, both far and near, We Thank Thee, Lord
For life and health, those common things, which everyday and hour brings,
For home, where our affection clings, We Thank Thee, Lord
For love of Thine which never tires, which all our better thought inspires
And warms our lives with heavenly fires, We Thank Thee, Lord
Amen
The quote above is a repeat from my article last November. I trust it has not been a year since we thanked our wonderful Lord for these
blessings, however we can get so caught up in the everyday urgencies that we take for granted the routine blessings. As major health issues
have impacted my family this year, I have become more aware of thanking God for my good health every day. I praise the Lord for ALL
His goodness to me. His mercy is new every morning, and He desires my obedience as a response to His mercy, grace, love and goodness.
May you be blessed this Thanksgiving season as your count your blessings and share with others from the bounty of God’s blessings to
you.
The International Mission Emphasis is scheduled for November 30th-December 7th. If you have not received a package of materials from
the WMU-NC office, call 866-210-8602. Packages have been mailed to churches recently.
November and December give many opportunities for sharing the love of Jesus through Giving. WMU has two annual projects for sharing
personal hygiene items with local and state agencies. Thank you for providing the bars of soap for our “Red Box” project to the Women’s
Correctional Centers in Raleigh.
Collection dates for the “Hygiene Kits” is November 24th – December 5th. Kits will be shared with the Community Shelter, Turning Point,
Friendship House, House of Pearls, Divine Ministries and other agencies depending on the quantity received. Items to be included in a zip
lock plastic bag are as follows:
Wash cloth w/Bar of Soap (4 - 5oz. size)
Deodorant – 2.8 oz or smaller (brand that can be used by male or female)
Toothbrush (individually wrapped), Toothpaste (3.5-4 oz size)
Shampoo (12 oz size or smaller at Wal-Mart) or travel size

The ministry of Dolls and Dogs for Jesus needs volunteers to ‘blind stitch’ the

only require 10 minutes of instruction
time. If you are available to help, please
call Joan Stanley at 704-989-6354. These hand-made
dolls and dogs are provided to churches on mission at

Chaperones and youth will be working at the
Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child center in
Charlotte on three different evenings this year. We
would like to thank the Youth Directors and Youth
from our UBA churches for participating in this event
each year.
Emails will be sent to Youth Directors reminding them of the night
they chose and Churches attending will receive informational packets
with waivers to have completed before arriving.
Churches attending will be called in November to check their final
numbers as we have a waiting list.
