TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other
sacraments in this category. The first, of
course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is
the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance.
The Letter of James sets out the deep
tradition for caring for the sick: sending
for the priests, who will pray and lay their
hands on the sick ones, anointing them
with oil, and giving them forgiveness.
Long before other rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was
therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick,
nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold
smoothly, however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick was taken home
to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or
even to be drunk as a medicine. As early
as the second century, bishops were
therefore urging that priests should be the
ones to visit those separated by illness
from the Sunday assembly. Thus the
practice of consigning the Eucharist and
the oil of the sick to the non-ordained

Patricia Dawsey Fox, an aunt of parishioner Bernadette Hinojosa, had
compiled various writings of her late
husband, James Madison Fox. The
writings are in booklet form and have
been made in to 5 minute daily reflections for Lent entitled My Lenten
Journey: Born in a Manger...Destined for the Cross. The
booklet received the Imprimatur from
the Bishop fo the Diocese of Lake
Charles in July 2000.
You may come by the office to review a copy before ordering if you’d
like.
If you would like to order a copy
of this booklet the parish will be placing an order for the booklet January 5,
2015. Please call the office to pre-pay
for your booklet(s) should you desire
to have one. The cost is $4.95 per
booklet.
The Women’s Organization will be
having a booth at Cowboy Christmas
at St. John Neumann Church on December 6th. Besides requesting crafts,
we can also seel baked goods. The
crafts can be brought to the November
9th regular meeting at 3:00pm in the
conference center. All proceeds will go
to the scholarship fund. Bake Sale after all the Masses, November 8th &
9th. Water for Lifer video will be
shown at the meeting.
THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is
prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks
of streams of living water flowing out
from the temple, watering the desert,
bringing life to all living things, offering
fresh healing to God’s people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their
faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that,
Paul reveals that those who follow Christ
are themselves temples, temples of the
Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only
with them, but in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the
presence of God and the only place
where authentic worship of God took
place. Jesus had a different perception.
Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus
indicated a dramatic shift in what it
means to worship God, to be in God’s
presence. No longer was a place to be
the focus of prayer. Instead, a person,
the person of Jesus Christ, becomes the
center of our worship.

The “Running of the Silver Rose” began in
1960 as an initiative of the members of the
Columbian Squires, the youth arm of the
Knights of Columbus. The roses, symbols of
unity among the peoples in the Americas,
are also symbols of the pro-life movement of
which the Knights is heavily involved. The
program’s devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe stems from the fact that she is considered the patroness of the pro-life movement.
The roses began their journey in Canada,
and spend six months traveling throughout
the western, central, and eastern corridors of
North America, with Knights of Columbus
from Canada to Mexico carrying them from
destination to destination. Their journey will
conclude in Mexico City at the Basilica of
Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday where
the roses will be presented to Our Lady. As
part of this journey from Canada to Mexico, there will be a Silver Rose ceremony
at St. Elizabeth’s Chapel on Thursday,
November 20, 2014, please make plans to
attend at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
