Deadline for next Informer– Thursday 30th October 2014 — 4 pm
The first Informers were printed at the Hunua School with the help of the office staff, being June
McClure and Narelle Everit. They were then joined by Nancy Christopher and Pam Marren and
later Orm Christopher. All of The Informers were printed on a hand operated Gesttetner. Other
helpers in the early days with stencils were Carole Leonard and Jackie Burgess. There was
great excitement when they were given an electric one. Electronics eventually took over when
the Kirtlans were editors and a photocopier was purchased by the Social and Welfare Society to
do the job.
The Informers were initially distributed through the School and later by the Rural Mail Delivery.
At one time every Informer was individually named before the present system began – imagine
naming over 700 now!
Today The Informer, edited by Pauline Hayward, is printed, collated and stapled off-site by The
Imaging Centre in Papakura. It is then collated into distribution packs by Shaz Rack, Kasey
Dawson, Jenny Watts and Jo-Anne Forrest and each pack then placed in the letter boxes of our
delivery helpers.
Thank you everyone who has helped in some way to reach this amazing milestone and make
The Informer the success that it has become!

Treasure Island
Young Pirates of the Caribbean!
Written by Kathryn Schultz Miller
Hunua Youth theatre’s production for 2014 is “Treasure Island”. It is adapted from the 1883
novel by Robert Louis Stevenson which was written for young people who dreamed of an adventure on the high seas. As the play begins, Jim Hawkins is an ordinary contemporary boy having a
very bad day. Everything seems to go wrong at school and when he comes home his mother
has cooked his least favourite food. When Jim is sent to his room by his Mum for refusing to eat
his dinner, he indulges in a fantasy of pirates and adventure with his friends taking part.

Hunua School children’s ideas beautify the Hunua Triangle.
Local gardening talents Elle Anderson and Lynda Hallinan have judged the submissions made by
the community and student teams from Hunua School. The creativity and thoughtfulness that
went into the submissions delighted both judges. The next step is for the final plan to be drawn
up and signed off for road safety by Auckland Transport.
In October, the judges will be presenting certificates to the students who contributed their ideas
to the Hunua Triangle Beautification project.
Once the plan is approved, the work to clear and plant will begin. If you would like to help with
any of this project, please contact Jane Berney, Jackie Julian or Mandy Fowler.

Hunua Playcentre News
Term 4 is upon us, with some very exciting things coming up at Playcentre. As I am sure you
have all seen by now, our Giant Pumpkin Competition is up and running. October is the perfect
month to plant your pumpkins so come and see our stall at Hunua School’s Ag day on 18 th
October to register. Your registration includes Giant Pumpkin seeds and is only $5 so all the
family can have a go.
At Ag day we will also be offering pony rides and raffling an eating pig and butchering voucher.
The pig is big enough to go to the butcher now.
We are planning some improvements to our playground this term. We have got new barrel,
pommel and ladder swings and are looking at making improvements to our main playground
structure as well. Watch this space for more exciting updates, or bring your little ones in for an
explore!
We would like to invite families in our community or surrounding communities to come and find
out what Playcentre is all about by popping in to one of our friendly sessions for a play and a
coffee. Our sessions for term 4 are Monday and Friday 9:15 till 11:45. We are located next to
Hunua School. Look forward to seeing you there.

We would once again like to thank the Paparimu School pupils, teachers and parents who this
year had a lovely sunny day to plant out native trees on our property.
These trees are grown under the Trees For Survival program run by the Auckland Council and
the school is sponsored by Watercare Services.
Thanks again to Sue Crawshay for her organizing and teaming us up once again with a local
school.
As this block is visible from the road at 1040 Hunua Rd, the children will be able to watch the
trees grow as the years go by.
This block will eventually be covenanted with the QE 11 Trust, so like all the other blocks they
have planted will be permanently protected.
Thanks again.
