Safety information
Intended use
The 3M™ Detection System Model 9100 Series is intended for use in detecting books and other media items
marked using RFID tags that have not been checked out by library patrons. The system is typically placed at the
exit point of a library such that patrons must walk through it when exiting the building or facility and provides
an audio and visual alarm if unchecked materials are detected.
The system must be installed as specified in the 3M™ Detection System Model 9100 Series
Architect’s/Contractor’s Information Package and is intended for use in an indoor library environment. It has
not been evaluated for other uses or locations.

Introducing the detection system
Key features
The 3M™ Detection System Model 9100 Series assists in preventing unauthorized removal of a library’s
materials when they are marked with 3M™ RFID tags. The system offers the following features:
•
Integrated audio and visual alarms to alert staff when an item containing a secured tag is detected
•
Integrated, directional patron counter
•
Corridor width of 36 in. [91,4 cm] to comply with ADA guidelines
•
Direct mount, baseplate or buried cable mounting options
•
Support for configurations up to seven corridors
•
Support for integration with the optional 3M™ Command Center
Configurable alarm options
Libraries can configure the Model 9100 Detection Systems to alarm when one of four events occurs:
•
When the system detects a secured tag and a patron exits
•
When the system detects a secured tag and a patron enters
•
When the system detects a secured tag and a patron exits or enters
•
Whenever the system detects a secured tag. This means the system will alarm anytime a secured tag is close
enough for detection
The alarming option is configurable at installation by the technician or anytime using the optional Command
Center software.
Note: Command Center settings override configuration changes entered by a technician after the technician
disconnects from the system.
Alarm behavior
The alarm behavior you see will differ depending upon which firmware version is installed in your system.
For firmware versions before version 1.8.3, large multi-corridor detection systems flash all lattice LEDs when
only a single secured tag is detected in a corridor, but patrons are detected in other corridors.
With firmware version 1.8.3 or later, multi-corridor detection systems flash LEDs only in the corridors in which
secured items are detected. Additionally, when the system is configured to alarm upon detection of any secured
item, a single panel lights up if a lattice detects secured items. Thus, if a secured item is detected within range
of a lattice, but outside the lattice corridor, that lattice (only) alarms.

Turn the system on and off
1. Locate the key switch, which controls power to the system, on an end
lattice.
2. Use the key to power the system on and off.
Note: The key can be inserted and removed in either the off (0) or on (1)
position.

Verify the system operation
The system can be configured to alarm when exiting only, entering only, entering and exiting or whenever it
detects a secured tag. Verify that the system is alarming in the way it is configured by walking through the
corridor with an item that is known to be in the secured state.
Note: The alarming option is configurable at installation by the installing technician or anytime by library staff
using the optional 3M™ Command Center software.
Check the patron count
•
The patron counter keeps track of how many patrons have
entered and how many have exited through all corridors. It also
keeps a total count.
•
The patron counter display is located on one of the lattices as
shown.
•
→ and ← arrows indicate which direction the count is for (in or
out of the library). The ═ sign indicates the total for both
directions.
•
The top row of the display automatically cycles through the three
counts and the bottom row shows the number of alarms that have
occurred.
•
The optional 3M Command Center software collects patron
count statistics that can be viewed by staff using a web interface.
•
The eight-digit patron counter can record up to 100 million
patron entrances and exits.

Reset the patron counter
1. Record the total patron count before
resetting the counter (in order to track
totals).
2. Locate the patron count access hole, which is
located beneath the patron count display.
Note: Ensure that you locate the correct
access hole. Do NOT insert the paper clip
into the Photocell holes (along the horizontal
line in the drawing to the right) located
above the patron count access hole.

3. Reset the patron counter by inserting the
pointed end of a bent paper clip into the
access hole and pressing the reset button.

Adjust alarm volume
1. Locate the alarm adjustment mechanism, which is
near the alarm speaker and on the same lattice as the
patron counter.
2. Adjust the alarm volume by doing the following:
(a) Have someone stand in a detection system
corridor with a secured RFID tag so that the alarm
sounds continually.
(b) Insert a paper clip or small screw driver through
the alarm adjustment opening and move the
adjustment mechanism back and forth until you
find the right volume.

technician will set these parameters initially during
installation.

Clean lattices
CAUTION!
•
Turn off the detection system before cleaning.
•
Do not allow liquid into the lattice base because this can damage electronics.
•
Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, window cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds, or
strong detergents, which can damage lattices.
Cleaning instructions:
•
Use a soft, clean, damp cloth or chamois to gently clean lattices. A 3M Scotch-Brite lens cleaning cloth is
included with the system for this purpose. If required, clean an area with a cloth moistened with a solution
of mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Rinse with clean water and dry residual moisture with a
clean, soft cloth or towel.
•
Use an antistatic cleaner for acrylic to reduce static electricity and dust attraction.

Training your staff
A key element of any media loss prevention effort is a successful staff training program. Your system will be
much more effective with the active cooperation and participation of your entire library staff. We recommend
that you periodically conduct formal training sessions on the following subjects in order to make the best use of
your system:
•
Owner’s manual review
•
Materials tagging with 3M™ RFID tags
•
Your library’s security policies
•
How to respond when the alarm sounds
•
Alarm log use
Hands-on practice
After reviewing this manual, your staff will benefit from actual hands-on experience with the detection system
products they are expected to use. We suggest you start by demonstrating the proper techniques for each tagging
procedure. You may wish to conduct the actual practice as follows:
1. Make sure that all the other 3M Library Systems products are installed and functional.
2. Let each staff member practice installing the tags on library items.
3. Let each staff member practice securing and unsecuring materials.
Review of your library’s security policies
Before practicing how to respond to alarms, staff should be familiar with the library’s security policies as they
relate to theft of materials. It is important that staff become familiar with state and local laws governing patron’s
rights and responsibilities, and the response should be consistent for all patrons caught in an alarm.
To help staff stay informed of security measures, your policy should be in writing and kept with your training
kit along with any other procedures you follow.
Note: It is particularly important for staff members to know what procedures the library follows
when theft is suspected or when it is necessary to contact a local law enforcement agency.
A critical phase of staff training concerns the proper steps to take when the security system alarm sounds. The
value of tact and courtesy when handling this delicate situation cannot be overemphasized. Your staff members
should receive as much preparation as possible to make them feel comfortable. With the proper training, your
staff will be more likely to effectively deal with patrons who activate the alarm.
Responding to alarms can be a sensitive situation but can also be handled confidently and effectively as long as
your library has established procedures and your staff members are fully trained in following them.

What to do when the alarm sounds
Generally, remain calm and courteous. Don’t panic and don’t rush to assumptions about the person who
triggered the alarm. It’s not possible to be immediately certain of the thoughts or motives of the person. Never
accuse anyone of theft by word, by facial expression, or by tone of voice. In rare occasions, the alarm may have
triggered falsely. In other cases, an item may not have been unsecured properly, or the person holding the item
that caused the alarm may not even be aware it is in their possession. Always respond in a positive,
nonthreatening manner.
Possible alarm scenarios
In simple terms, a patron might respond to a triggered alarm in either of three ways:
1. The patron might stop in the corridor.
2. The patron might be unaware they have caused the alarm, disregard it, and casually continue to exit.
3. The patron might run for the exit.
In the third scenario, the answer is obvious: follow your library’s policy for theft.
The solution for the first and second scenarios may not be so clear-cut and you will want to exercise courtesy
and tact because you will want the patron’s cooperation and in most cases the patron will want to cooperate.
After asking the patron to return to the counter, you might typically ask “Excuse me, did I forget to check out
one of your items?” or “Did you perhaps pick up one of the library’s books with your own things?” These are
courteous questions and they don’t accuse the patron of theft. Be sure to smile and ask the questions in a
friendly, nonthreatening manner.
Process and unsecure all items again. If you discover an item that hasn’t been properly checked out, never
accuse the patron of stealing. Simply act as if the error was an oversight—it more than likely was—and you can
resolve the situation easily in this manner.
If the patron is uncooperative or causes the alarm to sound again, follow the policy that your library has
established for possible theft of materials.

Unwanted alarms
Your detection system is virtually free of false alarms. Occasionally your system may alarm and your staff may
find that the patron does not have unauthorized library materials. Unwanted alarms may be caused by tags on
items carried into the library such as books from another library.
Unwanted alarms are generally infrequent and will vary depending on the patrons and the proximity of your
library to facilities that are releasing items containing tags. Because it is not possible to distinguish between
unwanted alarms and alarms with potential item loss, all responses to alarms must be consistent and follow your
management policies. If patrons see no response to alarms, the system becomes less effective. When you decide
that a tag on an item from outside your library caused an alarm, follow these steps.
1. Explain the problem to the patron.
2. Verify that all of the patron’s library materials are properly checked out.
3. Allow the patron to exit the library.
Many patrons will learn from the experience and will not carry items that may cause alarms into the library.

When certain error conditions occur, the system presents error codes on the patron counter display. These codes
can help 3M support staff diagnose problems, so you may be asked to record and report them when you report a
problem.

Appendix B — Configuring a wired Ethernet module
To execute this procedure, the following prerequisites are required.
•
Computer with device detection software (e.g. Digi Device Discovery utility)
•
Master gate lattice assembly completed. System must be turned on. Network cable must be connected.
•
Library network knowledge. This potentially includes certificate files, user names, and/or passwords.
To configure a wired Ethernet module, complete the following procedure.
1. Connect the configuration computer to the network where the device is located.
2. Determine the IP address assigned to the detection system by the network. The device name is Digiboard.
The MAC address starts with 00-40-9d.
a) Launch the Digi Device Discovery utility to search for and discover devices on the network.
b) Note the IP address of the device.
3. Launch a web browser.
4. Enter the IP address of the device on the Address line.
The configuration interface for the network module appears.
5. Enter the user name and password information, then click Login. Use the following user name and
password.
•
User name — NetConfig
•
Password — Library
6. Click Network (from the list on the left).
7. Configure the IP address parameters for the module. If you change any settings, click Apply.
Note that the gate is configured for DHCP by default—if the library is using static IP addresses, select that
option and enter the necessary parameters.
8. Click Advanced Network Settings (near the bottom of the page).
9. Ensure that HostName has been set. Set the host name to 3M followed by the 8 digit serial number (e.g.
3M91040013).
10. Click Apply to save any changes.
11. If you changed any of the Ethernet module settings, you will need to reboot the module. Click Reboot (from
the list on the left side of the window). The Ethernet module will reboot.
12. Close the web browser.
13. Wait for the module to reboot (this should take approximately 1 minute).
14. Ensure that the device attaches correctly to the network. This can be accomplished using a simple ping
request, or using a network analysis tool.

Appendix C — Wireless network access point device for
configuring the wireless network module
To configure the wireless interface, it is recommended that a single network wireless access point/router/switch
be set up that is NOT connected to the library’s network. This allows the initial connection and configuration of
the Model 9100 master lattice to occur in a controlled, isolated environment.
Device basics – 802.11b compliant, integrated 4-port 10/100 switch, and DHCP capable.
Examples of a recommended network wireless access point/router/switch include:
•
Linksys® WRT54G
•
Linksys® WRT54G2
•
D-Link® DIR-601
•
D-Link® DIR-615
•
NETGEAR® WGR614
•
Any commercial grade wireless access point
Wireless connection parameters
The wireless portion of the access point must be configured with the following parameters to ensure the
wireless modules can connect.
•
SSID can be anything
•
802.11b must be enabled – the Digi modules ONLY support 802.11b
•
Authentication must be disabled (Open system)
•
Encryption must be disabled
Other network device parameters
Verify the following settings on the network device to ensure that all devices can connect and communicate.
•
DHCP should be enabled (allow the device to assign IP addresses to connecting devices)
•
Enable Multicast traffic
Note: The factory default for the wireless module will connect to any open wireless network, and uses DHCP.

Appendix D — Configuring a wireless Ethernet network
The default behavior for 9100 Detection Systems is to connect to an open, unsecured wireless network set for
DHCP. If you want the detection system to connect to a different wireless network, complete the following
steps.
1. Change the 9100 Detection System to connect to a private network configured for DHCP. Change only the
SSID and security method. Do not set the system to a static IP yet.
2. Reboot the detection system.
3. If a static is desired, determine the IP address of the 9100 system on the private network, then set the system
to use a static IP.
Prerequisites for configuring the 9100 detection system
The following prerequisites are required.
•
Computer with device detection software (for example, Digi Device Discovery utility)
•
Master gate lattice assembly completed. System must be turned on (the wireless network module will
receive power when the gate is turned on).
•
Library network knowledge, including any wireless authentication and security parameters. This potentially
includes certificate files, user names, and/or passwords.
•
Wireless access point/network switch with DHCP capability (the access point should be configured as

To configure a wireless network module
Complete the following procedure to configure a wireless network module.
1. Connect the configuration computer to an open, unsecured wireless network, or to a wireless access point
that is configured as described in Appendix C — Wireless network access point device for configuring the
wireless network module.
2. Determine the IP address assigned to the Detection System by the network. The device name is Digiboard.
The MAC address starts with 00-40-9d.
a) If connected to a temporary wireless access point (configured as described in Appendix C — Wireless
network access point device for configuring the wireless network module), position the configuration
wireless access point within 12 inches of the lattice group. This reduces the likelihood of interference
from other access points in the area.
b) Launch the Digi Device Discovery utility, or other network management tool, to search for and discover
devices on the network.
c) Note the IP address of the Detection System.
3. Launch a web browser.

4. Enter the IP address of the Detection System on the Address line.
The configuration interface for the network module appears.
5. Enter the user name and password information, then click Login. Use the following user name and
password.
•
User name — NetConfig
•
Password — Library
6. Click Network (under Configuration in the left column).
7. Click Advanced Network Settings (near the bottom of the page). Ensure that the HostName is set. If
required, set the host name to 3M followed by the 8 digit serial number (e.g. 3M91040013).
8. Configure for DHCP on the library's private network.
9. Click WiFi® LAN Settings.
a) Enter the Network name (SSID) for the library’s wireless network.
b) Select Connect to access point (infrastructure) networks only.
c) If necessary, change the country and channel settings.
d) Click Apply to save your changes.
10. Click WiFi Security Settings.
a) Select the Network Authentication security settings requested by the customer. Note the following:
 Both WPA and WPA2 are covered by the WPA options
 WPA-PSK uses TKIP
 WPA with 802.1x is WPA2 and requires CCMP
 WPA2 uses the AES standard
 Leave the option to use any available data encryption method selected
 Enter WEP keys if necessary
 Enter a WPA password if the library is using WPA-PSK (also known as WPA-Personal) security
 User name/Password – enter the appropriate user name and password if the library is using an
802.1x authentication scheme
b) Click Apply to save any changes.
11. Click WiFi 802.1x Authentication Settings.
a) It is recommended to accept the default settings (all boxes checked) in the EAP Methods and
PEAP/TTLS Tunneled Authentication Protocols sections.
b) Upload the appropriate certificate files, private key files, and passwords for the proper authentication
model.
c) Click Apply to save any changes.

12. Verify all settings specified in the preceding step. Do this BEFORE proceeding to the next step. If
anything was entered in error and you proceed to the next step, the Detection System will not connect to the
private network, and the network settings will have to be reset to factory defaults by a 3M technician.
13. Click Reboot (under Administration in the left column). The network module will reboot.
14. Verify that the Detection System is connected to the private network. This can be accomplished using a
network analysis tool.
•
If DHCP will be used, the configuration is complete.
15. If a static IP address is desired, reconnect to the module using the new IP address on the private network
(see steps 2-5 of this procedure)
16. Click Network (under Configuration in the left column).
17. Click WiFi IP Settings.
18. Select Use the following IP address (under IPv4).
19. Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway using the static IP address and pertinent
connection information from the library private network.
20. Click Apply to save your changes. Changes are applied immediately (no reboot is required).
21. Verify that the Detection System is connected to the private network using the static IP address. This can be
accomplished using a ping or a network analysis tool.
