Presidents Message Nov. 2014
Absolutely Beautiful! Those two words sum up
the Third Annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show
and Sale Oct. 18-19th. A huge thank you to
the 24 club members who worked hard to
make our show a SUCCESS! Members helped
with setup on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
before the show, takedown on Sunday, staffing the welcome tables, answering orchid care
questions, giving repotting lectures, and keeping the judges, vendors and workers very well
fed! Many of the 800+ visitors had been to
previous show and new and old promised to
return for the 2015 show. Again, thanks for all
you did to make our educational mission a success.
At our upcoming meeting, Nov. 4th, Professor
Joe E Meisel from the Ceiba Foundation for
Tropical Conservation and the Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, will be presenting ‘Orchid
Conservation in Ecuador’ He is a good speaker and will cover more than just orchids in the
wild. Bring your guests even if they are not
‘into’ orchids. Ceiba has an extensive education mission in Ecuador. Check out their website

Fantastic SHOW! Great Crowd at Weekend Orchid Show!
Over 800 people attended our Third Annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show at Noelridge
Gardens Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids. Orchid Societies from Kansas City, Omaha,
Minnesota, Illinois and Batavia plus our 3 Iowa Societies (us, Central Iowa and Illowa)
provided a great variety of over 400 orchids. In addition, we had photo, craft, and
collectable exhibits bringing the show total to 22 displays. Visitors were asked to vote
for the 'People's Choice Award' given to their favorite exhibit in the show. The Eastern Iowa Orchid Club's display received the award with Iowa Orchids from Des
Moines a close second. The Illinois Orchid Society display was nestled in amongst the
tropical flora and came in third. Five AOS awards were given including the Show
Trophy to our display. A AOS Artistic Award went to Dorothy Hampton for her hand
crafted orchid quilt. Joan Lorence’s collectable china table setting received Best of
Class for Orchids in Use. Grand Champion of the show went to Tony Nuccio of Batavia Society for his Vanda Pachara Delight. Reserve Grand Champion went to Dendrobium Lavender from the Noelridge Display—Bill Snyder can take some credit for
that one! The vendors were happy as they nearly sold out. We are ON for next
year—Oct. 17-18th, 2015: Nile

PM meal on Dec. 2nd upstairs at the church. Since we made
nearly $300 at our quarter auction in October, we will have
chicken (not spam) for our main entrée. Please sign up for the
potluck at the November meeting. Everyone always brings
great tasting ‘goodies!’ More important – sign up that you will
be attending or send me an email by Nov. 15th so that we
know how many blooming orchids to purchase for gift plants. All
signed members in attendance receive a gift plant. (no sign up –
no gift plant!) We will have a brief year end business meeting
and slide show of the year in review. We will not have a January meeting but plan an educational talk on Phragmipediums
for February.
