I want to give everyone my deepest
and warmest wishes for a wonderful
Thanksgiving. This time of year
reminds me of how much I have to
be thankful for. While I may strive
to do better each year, I cannot help
but appreciate all that I have. A big
part of what I am grateful for is each
of you. It is such a pleasure to serve
our senior community here in Huntington. Each day that I am with you
I appreciate the kind words, gentle
smiles and words of wisdom that you
so graciously share. I hope as you
each experience Thanksgiving 2014,
you know that you impact so many
people. And please note, that on
Thanksgiving when I take a special
moment to reflect on my family, dear
friends and good health, that your
presence in my life is valued and
appreciated and an integral part of
my happiness.

Recently, I joined with members of
the Huntington High School Class of 1964 at
the Town’s Vietnam Wall to recognize their
classmates who served in that war. It was an
emotional time, as the class, in the middle of
their 50th reunion weekend, paused to reflect
on a different time and a different era, and
especially to remember those who died for
their country in a far-off land.
Particularly touching were the remarks by Class of 1964 member Lou Pagano
about the effect the war had on veterans
returning home, including those for whom
the memories were still so painful, almost a
half century later, that they elected not to
join their classmates.
One of the reasons for the ceremony
was to note that 24 Class of 1964 members
will have their names added to the Wall next
year. Prompted by a request from the reunion
committee last year, I determined that space
was available to open the Wall to new
names, and so far, more than 190 names
have been submitted to be added to the 1,112
already there.
We are accepting names until
December 31, so if you want yours added, or
if you want to add the name of a loved one,
there is still time. To be eligible, a person
must have lived in Huntington for six
months at any time in their life. An
application form must be completed and a
copy of the veteran’s DD214 submitted,
along with a $15 donation to defray

information.
I look forward to the dedication
ceremony next year, timed to the 40th
anniversary of the war’s end. I am sure it
will be as stirring an event as the one with
the Huntington High School reunion group.
We’ll let you know when details are
completed, and I hope to see you there.

Driven insane by the stupidities
of Clouseau, ex-inspector
Dreyfuss transforms into a
master criminal. Kidnapping the
inventor of a death ray,
Dreyfuss threatens to use the
demon device indiscriminately
unless Clouseau is offered as a
"sacrifice." A hunted man,
Clouseau is forced to adopt one
transparent disguise after
another.
In December of 1944, the Allied high
command is convinced that German
forces in Belgium are in a low state
of readiness, and perhaps even
about to withdraw. Only one officer
on the front lines, intelligence
specialist Lt. Col. Kiley (Henry Fonda),
believes otherwise. His opinion is
rejected by his immediate superior
(Dana Andrews) and his commanding
general (Robert Ryan). Kiley spots
several suspicious signs of German
activity behind enemy lines on a
reconnaissance flight; he is at the
front looking for more evidence.

Thanksgiving Day Parade
As Chicago gears up for its annual
Thanksgiving Day parade, Emily Jones,
an eager parade coordinator, is shocked
when Henry Williams, a wealthy new
development consultant, is brought in
to analyze the parade's finances. Faced
with the challenge of teaching him that
the parade means so much more to her
than dollar signs, she suddenly finds
herself reluctantly falling for him.

ADULT DAY CARE SERVICES:
Social Model Day Care for the frail elderly. Monday through Friday
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Planned activities, socialization, hot meals and snacks provided. For more
information call Amy Geist at 351-3293.
CAREGIVERS SUPPORT*: Support groups and stress management for caregivers and for those
diagnosed with Alzheimer's/Dementia. Contact Holli Dunayer at 351-3253 Ext. 4016.
SMART DRIVING COURSE: 7-hour class offered monthly by AARP for Huntington residents ages 50 &
older. Please call 351-3253 for the next available date.
EISEP (EXPANDED IN-HOME SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY PROGRAM)*:
Case
management and non-medical, in-home care for persons over 60 who are unable to perform home
management tasks. Services may include shopping, laundry & light housekeeping. Persons must be above
Medicaid eligibility. Call Suffolk County Office for the Aging at 853-8200.
HOME DELIVERED MEAL PROGRAM*: Delivers meals to seniors who live alone and are unable to
shop and cook on their own. Contact Mary Hansen at 421-1273.
SENIOR HOUSING: Information on various housing programs including eligibility guidelines for various
independent, rental and assisted living communities within the Township of Huntington and Suffolk County.
Lists are available for Huntington Senior Housing, Federally Assisted Housing in Suffolk County and NonSubsidized Housing. Contact Heather Warringer at the Community Development Agency, 351-2881.
MEMBERSHIP CARDS: Huntington Senior Membership Cards are available free of charge for senior
residents age 60 and older. This card is required for you to participate in Senior Division programs and
clubs. If you plan on attending any of our programs, we highly recommend that you provide us with a list of
your medications and medical conditions, as well as the names and phone numbers of your primary
physician and personal contact, in the event of an emergency. This information will be kept in a secure
location. Please bring proof of residency and age to the Senior Center front office, 423 Park Ave., Huntington,
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Beach House during summer hours, or to your club
leader.
OPERATION MEDICINE CABINET: Drop off unwanted, unused, or expired over the counter or
prescription medications at a safe and secure location. Officers will be available to collect the medications on
the first Wednesday of every month in the Senior Center Dining room. (Liquid medications will not be
collected.)
PODIATRIST PROGRAM:
Second Wednesday of the month, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room 111.
Please bring “Explanation of Medicare Benefits,” a form showing latest deductible.
RESIDENTIAL REPAIR PROGRAM*:
Small household repairs, that Huntington residents over age
60, are not able to manage. You are charged for parts and supplies only. Contact Lorenzo Horne at 3513253, Ext. 4002, between 9:00 a.m. and noon.

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?
We need help with a variety of activities at the Senior Center,
Adult Day Care and our Beach House. If you are interested in helping others, here are some areas in which
you could assist: Telephone Reassurance, Office Assistant, Gift/Thrift Shop, Welcoming Committee, Teach a
Class or Run a Group. Let us know how you would like to share your talents and skills. Contact Maria

Town of Huntington Senior Division 2014 Trips
A TALE OF TWO CATHEDRALS
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9TH - $87.00 P.P.
We will depart the Senior Center promptly at 7:45 a.m.
Join us on our 2014 holiday trip. It begins with a tale of two cathedrals. Morningside Heights, on the
upper west side of Manhattan, is the home of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, where docents
will lead us on an informative 60-minute tour of the fourth largest Christian church in the world. Directly across the street, a family-style lunch will be served with fresh bread, tossed salad, pizza and pasta, followed by coffee or tea. The famous Hungarian Pastry Shop is several doors down. You'll have time to purchase pastries for
yourself, but don't fill up... As we travel from Morningside Heights to Midtown Manhattan, assorted desserts will be served
with bottled water and iced tea. Enjoy the sights as we travel down Fifth Avenue, with great views of Central Park, famous
storefront windows, the Tree at Rockefeller Plaza and ultimately, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral (opened in 1879). Docents will
lead us on a 45-minute tour of St. Patrick’s; at 338 feet, it is the second tallest church in America. Our final stop is theWinter
Village at Bryant Park, with over 100 gift shops situated along tree-lined alleys. Ice skating, local food, hot chocolate, cider and
holiday shopping are all here. As we return to Huntington, recline the seat, stretch your legs and watch a holiday movie. Our

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Local public transportation is available Monday through Saturday. The Town of
Huntington’s HART system (427-8287) and Suffolk County Transit (852-5200)
operate a network of regularly scheduled bus routes that serve many of the places
seniors might want to travel, including the Senior Center. Buses are handicap
accessible. Senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders are eligible to pay reduced fares.
Minibus service is also provided, at somewhat higher fares to persons who are prevented from using the regular buses
because of a disability. This paratransit service is operated on a shared-ride, advance-request, curb-to-curb basis by
HART (for rides entirely within the Town of Huntington) and Suffolk County’s SCAT program (for rides within Suffolk
but not entirely within the Town). Both agencies require prior enrollment by application. Personal travel assistance is
limited. HART also extends paratransit service, with reduced priority, to non-disabled senior citizen residents who do not
drive and do not have access to regular buses. Paratransit is not offered as a more convenient alternative to regularly
scheduled buses. For information, call HART at 427-8287 (TTY: 800-662-1220) and SCAT at 853-8337 (TTY:8535658). Bus schedules are available at the Senior Center.

What is Hands on Huntington?
Hands on Huntington (HoH) is a Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community, NNORC,
in the Greenlawn area covering parts of Greenlawn, East Northport and Huntington. HoH is funded
through the New York State Office of Aging NNORC Program. This initiative is also supported by the
Town of Huntington, F.E.G.S. Health and Human Services System and the United Way of Long Island.
HoH brings together community partners including North Shore LIJ Health System, the Suffolk Y JCC,
and others, to provide support services, information and referral, education and recreation programs to
seniors, helping them remain in their homes and community. If you would like to learn more about our
program, come to an Advisory Board Meeting or call our office to speak with our social worker and
director, Tina Block, LMSW.
