The Lateran Basilica is the seat of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. The building may have been repaired and its role may have changed since the 4th Century, but Jesus Christ remains its cornerstone as He is the cornerstone of the entire Church. Our spiritual practices and rituals likewise may evolve, but as temples of the Holy Spirit, our faith remains in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Today’s’ readings: The angel brings Ezekiel to the heavenly temple. Saint Paul, today, reminds us that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel today, the money changers desecrate the temple and Jesus confronts them. He turns the tables on them, saying He will rebuild the “temple” in three days, alluding to His death and resurrection. ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE It’s Your Turn!!! SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN PROTEGIENDO A LOS NIÑOS - Did You Know? ¿Sabía Usted? Talk with your children about safety at school “Back-to-school does not have to mean back-to-worrying. Though safety inside school is ultimately the responsibility of the principal and school staff, parents can take a few basic steps to ensure a safe school experience.” Talk with your child about safety. Be specific. Talk about instinct and paying attention to funny feelings of fear. Explain what to do if she doesn't feel safe (find a teacher, call 911, etc.). Make sure she knows how to contact you or a trusted neighbor who is likely to be at home. Para más información, por favor visite http://www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/article/p arent-teacher-partnerships/6-rules-school-safety November 9, 2014 The Dedication Of The Lateran Basilica 7 Accompanist Needed for the 11:30m Choir- please see Luz Moncayo, the choir director after Mass. to promptly notify the Rectory of any changes in your registration information. Please also let us know if you do not want to use envelopes. If you want to have a record of your contributions, however, it is important that you either use envelopes or write your family ID number on your checks. Your continued cooperation is greatly appreciated so that we can ensure the accuracy of our records. SAINTS &SPECIAL OBSERVANCES - Self Reliance A semi-lapsed Catholic was late for a job interview and looking for a parking place. He was getting so desperate he finally prayed "Please God, if you find me a space, I promise to go to church every Sunday from now on..." Just then, a space magically appeared in front of him. At which point he said "Never mind, Jesus, I just found one!" Suerte Felipe “He Descended into Hell” Did Jesus really go to hell? Our English expressions that include the word “hell” such as “what the hell”, “who the hell”, “give someone hell”, “for the hell of it”, and “all hell broke loose” do not help us in understanding this article of the Apostles’ Creed. This is so because the translation of the Latin inferos as “hell”, as Father Anscar Chupungco observes, “does not correspond to the current understanding of hell” (Foley et al., A Commentary on the Order of Mass of the Roman Missal, 2011, 184). For this reason, we need to clarify first the meaning of the word “hell”. The Latin formulation descendit ad inferos was rendered by the 1973 translation as “he descended to the dead.” The new translation now is “he descended into hell”. In the Hebrew Old Testament, it was believed that when people died, whether good or bad, all descended to Sheol which is the common “place of the dead”. Sheol was translated as Hades in the Greek Septuagint and as Inferus in the Latin Vulgate. Both the influential Protestant King James Version and the Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible literally translated Inferus as “hell”. Biblically, “hell” as Sheol, Hades, or Inferus means the state or “the abode of the dead” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 633). Hence, when we profess in the Apostles’ Creed “he descended into hell”, we mean “that Jesus did really die” (CCC 636). As a human being, Jesus experienced real death. Indeed, he was “six feet under”. Jesus himself had foretold in reference to the story of Jonah, “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Mt 12:40). This is the first meaning of “he descended into hell”. But there is more to it than just Christ suffering death. To be continued.
