How to Place Your First Order
The Ready, Set, Sell! Inventory Options for New Consultants brochure can help
you select the amount of inventory that’s right for you.
1. Look for this brochure in your Starter Kit. (See Page 8 for more information.)
2. Select the inventory level that will work for you.
3. Ask your Independent Sales Director for assistance. Or call the Consultant Contact
Center at (800) 272-9333 and select the Branch Customer Service option.

The Benefits of Inventory
Purchasing inventory is an individual decision, and it’s certainly not a requirement
for you to begin your Mary Kay business. We always recommend that you determine
what activity level you intend to pursue in your Mary Kay business and then, if appropriate for your personal circumstances, invest in a level of inventory that supports that
activity. Your Independent Sales Director is an excellent person with whom to discuss
your plans as she can likely offer you helpful suggestions and tips that may assist you
in making the right choice for you. Here is something to consider:
Set and Reach Your Goal!
Many independent sales force members find that having a goal helps motivate them
to sell and reach out to new customers. The Star Consultant program is one way
to set that goal, and it rewards Independent Beauty Consultants with fabulous prizes
for building a broad customer base and maintaining consistent retail sales! Here’s
how it works:
Up Your Selling Potential
Naturally, your numbers will depend on the individual
spending habits of your unique retail customer base.
However, once you’ve determined the average spending pattern of your customer base, you can then use
the steps described (at left) to get an idea of how many
consistent customers you need to reach any other Star
Consultant goal you may have. Continuing with the
example (at left):
40 retail customers x $20 wholesale per month =
$800 wholesale per month
$800 wholesale x 3 months = $2,400 wholesale
Ruby Star Consultant Status
50 retail customers x $20 wholesale per month =
$1,000 wholesale per month
Step 1: Create a Monthly Goal
For example, if you want to achieve Sapphire Star Consultant status*, you would
need to accomplish enough retail sales each quarter to support $1,800 in wholesale
ordering. On average, that would mean you need enough retail sales to support
$600 in wholesale production each month.
$1,800 wholesale ÷ 3 months = $600 wholesale per month
$1,000 wholesale x 3 months = $3,000 wholesale
Diamond Star Consultant Status
60 retail customers x $20 wholesale per month =
$1,200 wholesale per month
$1,200 wholesale per month x 3 months =
$3,600 wholesale
Step 2: Determine How Many Customers You Might Have
Consider the potential customers you listed on the preceding page and think about
how many consistent retail purchasing customers you would need to support your Star
Consultant goal. To have the retail sales to support $600 wholesale production each
month, you would need to sell approximately $1,200 suggested retail to your customers
each month. For illustration purposes†, let’s use an example of an Independent Beauty
Consultant who has 30 customers who each buy an average of $40 suggested retail
($20 wholesale) each month. Here’s how accomplishing this type of consistent retail
sales could put this Beauty Consultant on her way to Star Consultant status:
30 retail customers x $20 wholesale per month = $600 wholesale per month
Emerald Star Consultant Status
80 retail customers x $20 wholesale per month =
$1,600 wholesale per month
$1,600 wholesale per month x 3 months =
$4,800 wholesale
Pearl Star Consultant Status
Whatever you decide, remember that investing in inventory is an individual decision and only you can determine
what the appropriate investment amount should be.

*A minimum of $1,800 in wholesale Section 1 orders postmarked within the contest quarter is required to
qualify as a Star Consultant.

If you change your mind or decide that a Mary Kay business is not for you, you can take comfort in knowing that
the Company will repurchase, at 90 percent of your original net cost, any original and unused Section 1 products,
provided such items were purchased by you from the
Company within one year prior to return.
