VOLUME 27, No. 11 N ovember is the month best known for giving thanks. So, for what or whom are you thankful? No. Don’t answer. I’ll go first — then your turn. I’m thankful that I’m a child of God. Yes, that’s the most important thing of all. I’m thankful for my family. I’m especially thankful for my dear wife of 53 years. I’m thankful for our children, Art and Bobbi, who love me. I’m thankful for our grandchildren who love me. I’m thankful for our greatgrand children — who will hopefully grow to love me. I’m thankful for my church family here at CLC who love me and have accepted me “warts and all.” I’m thankful to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department who have allowed me to serve as P.D. Chaplain since 1997. Whew... Now, your turn: NOVEMBER, 2014 Hold on, I’ve just remembered a couple more things for which I’m thankful. I’m thankful for my health. As I like to say, “I’m in great shape for the shape I’m in.” Yes, I have arthritis in my knees, lower back and bursitis in my left shoulder. And, yes, my skin is now thin so that when I barely bump against things I bleed. Oh, and another little thing,…(I’ll have to get back to you on that, I can’t remember what I was going to say.) Ok. You may continue: I mentioned as of first importance that I am a child of God. It is from there I give thanks for the many other blessings that are mine as a result of the grace and generosity of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As for giving thanks at worship, David wrote: Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done. Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and His strength; seek His face always. Remember the wonders He has done…Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and joy in His dwelling-place. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength, ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name. Bring an offering and come before Him; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness. Tremble before Him, all the earth!…“The LORD reigns!”…Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. Cry out, “Save us, O God our Savior;…that we may give thanks to Your holy name, that we may glory in Your praise.”…Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the LORD.” (1 Chron. 16:7–36) In Jesus’ name, Pastor Miller NOVEMBER 2014 Page 2 Christ’s Messenger Christ’s Messenger BOOK REVIEW Christ Lutheran Church 64565 Pierson Blvd. All Mail: P.O. Not her desk phone, not her cell phone, she rifled thru her desk and found a padded envelope with her name on it and stamped, “Private.” The ringing came from inside. She answered and a voice demanded that if she hung up the boy would die. If she didn’t do as instructed, the boy would die. Every demand ended with the same four words, the boy will die. A few years ago he offered these thoughts just before Thanksgiving: “When a heart is filled with gratitude, there is little room for such things as grudges, unforgiveness, hatred, envy, jealousy, greed and the like. A sense of gratitude does good for both the spiritual heart and the physical heart. Consider that many heart attacks may be precipitated by stress, worry, pressure and anxiety. Let gratitude fill your heart.” —Quote used by permission of Assist News Service NOVEMBER 2014 ! W WO Page 5 WOMEN IN MISSION It is hard to believe the fall season is here and Advent just a few weeks away. We look forward to having our winter residents return and invite all to join us in our LWML activities and meetings. November 8 is the date for our big PARKING LOT SALE & BAKE SALE. Lots of changes are being made this year due to our relocation. We will have the sale outside, some on the patio area and the rest in the parking lot. Our time will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. We will need lots of help and will be counting on all of you who are able to do so. Sorting and pricing will begin Thursday, Nov. 6 at 9 a.m. We also will work on Friday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. You can bring your items Thursday and Friday. If you need to bring them earlier, check to see if Karen Miller is in the office first. If possible, we are asking that you price them before bringing them. Men, we need your help too! November 13 at 9:00 a.m. will be the monthly Workshop. This is a week later than in the past. We hope by changing it more will be able to come and help us with replenishing the pews and trim labels and greeting cards. Sorry, we are no longer saving used postage stamps as no resource for selling them for cash for mission grants is available. Thank you everyone for your past participation. We are still taking the Campbell’s labels and used cards. Also we still have some more boxes to unpack from our move. Any help would be appreciated. November 20 is the date of our next local LWML Meeting here at CLC at 10 a.m. Our devotions for the day will be led by Sonnie Faga. Watch for an announcement of the Program for the meeting. I am hoping to have a speaker on “Emergency Preparedness” but haven’t had confirmation yet. Sonnie Faga and Sylvia Broekel will be our hostesses for the † Christ’s Messenger LWML day. COME, bring a sack lunch, and enjoy some time with your sisters in Christ in our new Fellowship Hall. We’ll be looking for you! NEEDED! Bonnie Knutson has agreed to serve as a co-chairman of Altar Guild. We still need someone to co-chair with her. See Karen Miller if you are interested or need more information. KEEP those MITE offerings coming in! Every penny, nickel, dime, quarter and even paper currency help. If you need a Mite box see Karen Miller or Mary Bass. 75% of our offerings go to funding our District LWML Mission Grants and the other 25% is sent to help with our National LWML Mission Grants. The following poem was written by Esther Foster in commemoration of our LWML 70th anniversary. Seventy years have come and gone But LWML continues on and on. It got started by a faithful few And with God’s help it grew and grew. He fed us with His holy word. Talk of quitting was never heard. We’re not a club as some might think. For Christ’s living water we must drink To keep ourselves pure of mind And to each other be always kind. We give our Mites, we sing and pray And in God’s love we’ll surely stay. Our mission grants are just a goal For saving yet another soul In faraway places or very near All creation is oh so dear. When we meet Jesus face to face Our work is done, I rest my case. NOVEMBER 2014 Page 6 Christ’s Messenger A DAY TO HONOR OUR VETERANS On November 11, 1918, the Germans and the Allied Nations, which included the United States, signed a document to initiate an armistice (cessation of hostilities), thus ending World War I. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation designating November 11 as Armistice Day. It was to be a day of reflection — a day to remember those who died in the country’s service and to offer Americans the opportunity “to show sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation.” Wanting to recognize more specifically America’s veterans, Congress passed a bill changing the name of the day from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. The change was made in May 1954. On this national holiday, churches around the nation hold services of prayers and praise. Followers of the Prince of Peace pray for peace among the nations of Earth and for the day when “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4, NRSV). [in John Witte, Religion and the American Constitutional Experiment, p. 58] (copied from an email from Dale A. Meyer, 2006) NOVEMBER 2014 Have you counted you blessings lately? I try to remember them every morning when I go for my walk with Goldie. Yes, I do have many blessings! I’m thankful for my ability to even get out of bed each morning let alone excercise. I’m thankful for Christian parents who made sure I was Baptized and took me to Sunday School and Confirmation. I am thankful for my family and that they all live near me. Our church family is a blessing and I look forward to woshiping with them each Sunday. I am grateful for a nice home to live in and that we are in Desert Hot Springs. I could go on, and on. What are you thakful for? Owen Matas’ injury was worse than they first diagnosed. His MCL and ACL were both separated from his left knee. He is now in recovery and undergoing rehabilitation. Our dear Warren Duckstein went home to Jesus and a memorial service is in the planning stages.. (see page 3) Betty Nyberg was hospitalized briefly and is now on the mend. Mary Frank will be having eye surgery November 5 to remove scar tissue from a previous surgery. Page 7 Chet and Brenda Panique are now home after a trip to Utah to be with Brenda’s daugher, Sarah. Jim Lundquist is being treated for ITP (Idioipathic Thromboycytopenic Purpura) Lymphona. It is such a miracle that we get to worship with Ron Volk on most Sundays. He was diagnosed with a few weeks to live and that was last spring. Praise God! Please continue to pray for these folks. The Reformation Celebration, hosted by Christ Lutheran, was magnificent. We had pastors and a deacon from 6 of our congregations in the Circuit. About 20 folks were in the choir and Pastor Trent Thomson (Prince of Peace, Hemet) was the preacher. And, hundreds of sweets were served after the service. (Some the pics on page 13.) A few of our snowbirds have returned. We look forward to the return of all our winter folks. Cyrus and Jan Robbins traveled almost 3,000 miles recently to Washington state and back. He said they tried not to travel on any major hiways and saw some beautiful country. Jan said she was glad to be home. Christ’s Messenger Jim Lindgren and Rick Van Beveran remodeled the women’s bathroom. They did a great job. Thank you fellas. Stan Bass and his helpers are emptying the storage unit for the Parking Lot Sale. It all has to be sold or given to Angel View. Hope the sale is great! Visitors, visitors! We’ve been having quite a few people drop in on Sunday to check us out. Some have come back and some are joing the church. God is good! We miss our dear brothers and sisters who are unable to come to church: Bob Ellison, Pauline Gnot, Hulda Kreiss, Jim & Lois Lundquist, Oddvard Straumë and Dottie West. Continue to keep ALL of these brothers and sisters in Christ in your prayers. Drop us a line, send an email or come to DHS! It’s been great to hear from you while you are away. The emails are always welcome. It’s always great to know you’re thinking of CLC in good ’ol DHS. Take care of each other and give and get at least one hug a day. ☺ Let us Rejoice! the secatari ❣ NOVEMBER 2014 Page 8 This outline is a devotional reading plan that covers the entire Sacred Scriptures each year. The average reading is three chapters daily. A seasonal canticle is assigned for each month and is scheduled to replace the psalm on the first and last days of the month. All of the psalms are read twice a year. The lectionary is in accordance with Martin Luther’s suggestions: “But let the entire Psalter, divided in parts, remain in use and the entire Scriptures, divided into lections, let this be preserved in the ears of the church.” Also: “After that another book should be selected, and so on, until the entire Bible has been read through, and where one does not understand it, pass that by and glorify God. It focuses on God as the Great Gardener. In a prayer to God, the psalmist says, “You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide the people with grain, for so you have prepared it” (Psalm 65:9, NRSV). The psalmist goes on to say, “You crown the year with your _________.” Choose the correct word that belongs in the blank space above. A. bounty B. goodness C. generosity D. gifts (The answer is in Psalm 65:11, NRSV.) (see quiz, page 12) MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE The sweet old man always seemed to be in good humor. One day, a curious younger man asked why he was always so happy. “Well,” the kindly man replied, “it is because I know when I get up in the morning, I have two choices. I can choose to be happy or I can choose to be unhappy. I try to choose happiness each day. Hopefully that is reflected on my face and in my actions.” What did you choose this morning? ADVENT IS A BEGINNING Advent begins on November 30 this year. Many Christians may not realize that Advent is the beginning of the “church year.” The church year starts with our preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ. Advent obviously leads to Christmas Day. (see page 10, Hanging of Greens) After Christmas, churches move on to observe Epiphany (the arrival of the wise men). Epiphany is always observed on January 6. Next comes the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent continues through Holy Week when we observe Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Forty days after Easter we recall the ascension of Christ (Acts 1:9) on Ascension Day. Fifty days after Easter comes the birthday of the church when the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ’s followers in Jerusalem giving them power and unity. It happened on the day of Pentecost, a harvest holiday celebrated by Jews. Pentecost is observed until the start of Advent, when the church year begins again.
