29th October 2014 Term 4 2014 Issue 2 NEWSLETTER From The Principal Our desire to be in communion with nature is expressed in a number of ways. The Marist tradition places great value on manual work because it brings us into direct contact with creation, with other living beings, and with inanimate objects. It involves … caring for nature, in conserving and transforming it. It teaches … patience and precision. As well, such labour affirms both the value of working with our hands and the example of indigenous peoples who live with great respect in close relationship to their land. (Water from the Rock) We know that Jesus’ great teaching was to …’Love one another as I love you’. By supporting the Mabiri and Yulara communities through the upcoming walkathon each boy in the school contributes to our mission of making a difference in the lives of others. To show the face of Christ to those less fortunate than ourselves. O ur Year 11 immersion groups have recently returned from their work in Yulara, Central Australia and Bougainville in the Northern Solomon Islands. Both groups have lived the above passage from our Marist Spiritual text: ‘Water from The Rock’. This document gives expression to how, as Marists, we can live out our Faith in a way that enhances our own relationship with God and of those we come in contact with. A critical component of our immersion program is the schoolwork undertaken by the boys whilst they are in our host communities. The boys commit to keeping their own studies up to date whilst modelling academic rigour for the students they are interacting with. This then extends to the opportunity to teach and tutor their hosts. It is a long held belief in education that: “In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” The experiences of both our immersion groups have been extremely profound and, once again, provided a national and global context for our quest to ‘make a difference in our world’! The students who have returned from the immersions have extraordinary stories to share about faith in the face of adversity, joyfulness coming from having very little and an immense pride in having contributed to a relationship that helps define who we are as followers of Jesus. They will also be reassured of the liberation involved in learning, that through learning one can have an opportunity to make dreams a reality and achieve God’s plan for us to the fullest. For our Catholic, Marist community here at Pagewood, the College’s solidarity program is a critical component of our religious identity. We thank Mary, Our Good Mother for returning the boys and teachers safely back to us in good spirits and enlivened by the experience. As Marists we aim to make ‘Jesus known and loved’, both within and outside of our community. May we all be enriched by their story! With my very best wishes, PARENTS and FRIENDS Term 4 Meeting Wednesday 5th November 6.45pm La Valla Mr David McInnes College Principal Forum: Reviewing the first year of the Pagewood Project CHAMPAGNAT CATH OLIC COLLEGE PAGEWOOD 35 Donovan Avenue MAROUB RA NSW 20 35 Ph: (02) 9349 7333 Fax: (02) 9344 9883 IN THE TRADITION FROM THE LEARNING COORDINATORS Examination Preparation: The Higher School Certificate is in the final stages, with several boys completing their last exams in the coming days. As these examinations come to a close, attention now turns to the Semester 2 examinations for boys in Years 7-10. Boys across years 7-10 should be working tirelessly both in the classroom and at home in preparation for these examinations. Each boy has already received an examination notification and an individual timetable detailing the content, skills and schedule for each examination. Effective Study at Home – Study Notes: Creating study notes based on the examinable content is a proven and highly effective method for knowledge retention. Study notes allow students to organise the relevant information into short, succinct and easy to remember headings. Study notes are also an effective way for boys to reflect on what they know, what they don’t know and the areas they most need to focus most on. Creating study notes is a huge time and knowledge advantage in the lead up to exams. Further to this many boys have been provided with comprehensive revision booklets, with practice questions and tips for the exam. How much study should your boy be doing in the lead up to these examinations? Boys in years 9 and 10 should be doing up to 2 hours each day in preparation for this exam. Boys in years 7 and 8 should be doing at least 1.5 hours each day in preparation for their exams. Individual Study Plans Study Plans: Individual study plans are available for boys to collect from Mr. Heiss or Mr. Ferry. Some important dates to remember: Year 10 Examination Period: Tuesday November 4th – Friday 7th Year 9 Examination Period: Friday November 7th –Tuesday 11th Year 8 Examination Period: Wednesday November 12th – Friday 14th. Like all Australian schools, Catholic schools are accountable to governments and their local communities for meeting all the teaching and learning requirements of the state. Dr Ben Jensen (2014) suggests in his report Engagement of Parents and the Community that, “parents and communities reinforce changes in students’ behaviours and study habits. Schools can harness this impact by involving parents and community members in the change process. Positive role models from the community also help to lift student expectations. Community and welfare groups can be vital in addressing serious family problems that affect learning at school”. Dr Ben Jensen. Gratton Institute report, February 2014. Dr Ben Jensen’s report and recent educational research has demonstrated that the learning of students is enhanced when it is clear and obvious to students that their parents and the local community value learning. Having a business enterprise is one of the many ways in which local businesses, parents, students and schools can work together to support and enhance the learning of students. A Business Directory committee will be formed to take carriage of this initiative. Our first meeting will be held Tuesday 18th November at 4.00pm at Champagnat Catholic College. To register your interest in this meeting please leave your name with Dominic Ritchie the Trade Training Coordinator at the College. Parents of Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood and Our Lady of the Annunciation primary school would receive a copy of the Business Directory. The parents would be encouraged to support the business advertised and to ask for a “Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood Voucher” when they shop – this is a practical way of acknowledging the support of local business. The business enterprise committee in consultation with the school principals will allocate educational based funding to Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood and Our lady of the Annunciation primary school Pagewood. All funds raised by this directory are targeted to supporting projects that have a direct educational benefit to students. Thus local businesses contribute towards offering students opportunities that would not otherwise have. The overall welfare and education of young people cannot be left to families and parents alone – the whole community has a responsibility to ensure that young people are able to grow and mature within the context of a supportive community. These matches will now be played in the spare round on Thursday 27th November. Fine weather meant that Round 2 fixtures were able to proceed last week against Bankstown. 9 of our 12 summer teams were in action on the day with our A Grade Cricket, Under 14 Cricket, and Squash teams enjoying the bye. In Touch all 4 teams recorded very strong victories. Players and coaches have handled well the new experience of having to travel out to Putney to play their games instead of a brief walk up Fitzgerald Avenue to Heffron! The Under 14’s put on a dazzling display of attacking footy keeping a clean sheet while scoring plenty of their own as did B Grade who were rampant in their victory. A Grade and the Under 15’s also dominated their matches to bag 3 competition points and a bright start to their campaigns. In Basketball 3 of the 4 teams got their seasons off to a winning start, with the Under 14's being the most impressive as they defeated their opposition 43-9. The Under 15's played strongly to also win, doubling their opponent’s total, while B Grade led for most of their match only to surrender it with minutes to go. A Grade came out all guns blazing, racing away to a big lead in the first half which set up a comfortable 13 point victory. In Cricket our only team to play were the Under 16's and while conditions were tough under the hot sun out at Yagoona, the boys got the job done limiting Bankstown to 44 runs off their 20 overs. Pagewood passed the total in 12 overs for the fall of just 3 wickets, starting their season in the best way possible. A full summary of Round 2 scores against Bankstown can be seen below. Updated results and tables for each sport can be viewed in the Sport section of the College website. Representatives are reminded about their commitment to training and that attendance is compulsory if they expect to play on Thursday. New uniforms must also be brought each week. Failure to do so may mean players will be unable to take the field. Feedback regarding behaviour and sportsmanship following games from last week was very positive and should be a trademark of Pagewood players throughout the season. As a result those students will not be able to fully utilise and enjoy the amenities offered at these venues. Permission slips should be returned promptly into the appropriate box at the front office so rolls can be updated. MCC representatives are also required to return the slip for when they merge into house sport following the completion of the spare round on November 27. Students undertaking House and Free Choice sport are also reminded that if they wish to leave directly from a venue they must have a note signed by their parent or guardian giving them permission to leave, and must be handed to the teacher in charge at the start of sport. Sports Photos Sports photos that were taken in Term 3 have now arrived at the College. Any student who would like to see the photos is invited to the PE office to do so. Those interested in purchasing a photo need to obtain an order form from Mr Menniti. 8 CHAMPAGNAT CATH OLIC COLLEGE PAGEWOOD 35 Donovan Avenue MAROUB RA NSW 20 35 Ph: (02) 9349 7333 Fax: (02) 9344 9883 IN THE TRADITION Representative Golf Congratulations to Daniel Kolar (Year 11) who has been chosen to represent Australia and the Jack Newton Junior Golf Association at the Junior World Golf Championships to be held in Thailand next week. Following the practice round and opening ceremony to be held on Wednesday 5th November, Daniel will play 4 rounds over the next 4 days culminating in the closing ceremony held on the night of Sunday 9th November. Prior to this Daniel will attend a 3 day High Performance (HP) camp this weekend at Riverside Oaks Country Club which will be used to assess Daniel’s suitability for the 2015 HP squad, a major step which will help Daniel’s dream to become an international standard player in the future a reality. We wish Daniel safe travels and the very best of luck in the tournament as he takes on some of the world’s best junior talent in the sport. A recount of Daniel’s experience will feature in the next newsletter. Thursday Sport - Fishing The traditional fishing routine on a Thursday sport is catching rock fish! But on Thursday 23rd of October, our boys were triumphant in catching a real fish - a beautiful bream! The two boys who caught the fish were Year 11 students: Nathan Colla and Christian Mariconte. All the boys were excited and motivated to catch a fish themselves that they didn’t want to leave Port Botany!
