Election Day is Drawing Near... As we enter the month of November, we begin with Election Day on Tuesday, November 4th. Each year around this time, there are Runkle Student Council elections as well. Earlier this fall, students who were interested in serving as a representative 6th, 7th, or 8th grader wrote an essay and submitted it to the Student Council Advisors. When there are more nominations than available seats, we also hold an election. Essays are shared with the students of that particular grade level and the students read the essays (without the students' names) and select their choice based upon the essays. This year, we will also have an added public-speaking component. Stay tuned to find out who this year's representatives will be! Election Day Bake Sale... Our eighth grade students and their families are also running a bake sale during election day and all proceeds go towards defraying the cost of the 8th grade trip at the end of the year. There will be goodies of all kinds and there will also be coffee served in the morning as well. A perfect treat while voters are waiting in line! Poetry Salon - November 6th Salons were first made popular during the Enlightenment era when prestigious poets and authors would gather and share their works. From the Classroom Grades 7 & 8 Math Problem of the Week: Sticker Jar Mrs. Cook has a jar of stickers in her classroom. She hands out stickers as a reward to students who do well on exams. The jar is getting low, and she will need to buy more stickers. There are only 5 star stickers and 4 smiley face stickers left in the jar. If Mrs. Cook wants to have at least 60 smiley face stickers in the jar, how many more of each sticker will she have to buy to maintain the current ratio of smiley face stickers to star stickers? Last Week's Problem and Solution Old Books A mathematics teacher collects old books. One day, a student asked him how many old math books he has. He replied, "If I divide the books into two unequal whole numbers, then 64 times the difference between the two numbers equals the difference between the squares of the two numbers." How many old math books does the teacher have? Solution 64. Let a and b represent the two unequal whole numbers. Then 64(a-b) = a2 - b2. Factoring the right side yields 64(a-b) = (a-b)(a+b). Since a and b are not equal, (a-b) does not equal zero. Therefore, you can divide both sides by (a-b), which yields 64 =a+b. To solve the problem, you do not have to know the values of a and b, just the sum of a and b, which is 64, the total number of books. 5 of 8 and look for the SUBSCRIBE icon.
