15TH-RANKED BRUINS BEGIN LONG WEEK ON THE ROAD
The 15th-ranked Bruins will sprinkle a pair of matches among a
long week on planes and in hotel rooms this week, facing #21
Colorado on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PT and Utah on Sunday at 1
p.m. PT. Both matches will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
WHAT’S NEXT
UCLA is back at the John Wooden Center next week for another
Thursday-Sunday series against the Bay Area schools. The Bruins
host top-ranked and undefeated Stanford on Thursday, Nov. 13 at
7 p.m. and California on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. Both matches
will feature free video on UCLABruins.com.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA moved up one spot to 15th in this week’s AVCA Coaches Poll,
earning 38 additional points. Since starting the season outside of
the Top 25, the Bruins have been ranked for nine straight weeks.
UCLA has moved up in the rankings in seven of those nine weeks.
Nine Bruin opponents are ranked in the Top 25 this week (#1
Stanford, #2 Washington, #6 Penn State, #9 Illinois, #11 Oregon,
#16 Arizona, #19 USC, #20 Arizona State and #21 Colorado). Two
others, Hawai’i and Oregon State, also received votes.
LOWE NAMED SPORTS IMPORTS/AVCA NATIONAL POW
In the midst of an historic season, senior Karsta Lowe earned
yet another well-deserved recognition on Oct. 21, becoming just
the seventh Bruin to receive Sports Imports/AVCA National Player
of the Week honors.
Lowe, who was named Pac-12 Conference Offensive Player
of the Week for the fourth time this season on Oct. 20, is the
first Bruin to be named AVCA NPOW since Kelly Reeves (Sept.
27, 2011). Lowe joins the illustrious list of Annett Buckner (Oct.
17, 1994), Kristee Porter (Oct. 19, 1998), Nellie Spicer (Nov. 14,
2005), Nana Meriwether (Sept. 5, 2006) and Lauren Cook (Sept.
15, 2009) who have also earned the award.
Lowe set a new career high in kills with 33 against #10 Oregon
(Oct. 15), recording the most kills for a UCLA player in the rallyscoring era (since 2001). She added 21 versus Oregon State
(Oct. 17) to help UCLA earn its first Pac-12 weekend sweep
since November 2012. Lowe averaged 6.00 kills per set in the
two victories for the Bruins, recording 54 kills and a .350 hitting
percentage to go with 12 digs, a block and an ace.
Against Oregon, Lowe hit .473 and added five digs. It was the
most kills for a Bruin since 2000, tied for the 15th most for a
Bruin in a single match and two kills shy of the UCLA four-set
record. Against Oregon State, Lowe’s 21 kills were complimented
with seven digs.

BUECHLER AND LOWE EARN PAC-12 WEEKLY AWARDS
The Bruins were honored twice on Oct. 20 by the Pac-12
Conference, as senior Karsta Lowe earned her fourth Pac-12
Offensive Player of the Week award and Reily Buechler was
named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the first time.
With her fourth weekly honor of 2014, Lowe tied Natalie
Williams for the most conference Player of the Week awards in a
single season (1990) at UCLA. It has already been an incredibly
historic season for Lowe, who became the first Bruin ever to earn
POW accolades in back-to-back weeks on Sept. 8 and 15, also
receiving the award on Sept. 29.
Sunday, Nov. 9
#15 UCLA at Utah
1 p.m. PT
Live Television Broadcast on Pac-12 Net Los Angeles
It is the sixth time in her career that Lowe has been bestowed
a weekly honor by the Pac-12. She was named Defensive Player
of the Week on Sept. 3, 2012 and Offensive Player of the Week
on Sept. 2, 2013. Lowe is now tied for second in UCLA history
in Player of the Week honors with six. Daiva Tomkus had a halfdozen awards, while Williams recorded eight.
Since 2011, the first year in which the Pac-12 handed out weekly
Offensive, Defensive and Freshman awards, the Bruins have now
earned a pair of league Freshman POW honors. Zoë Nightingale
received the accolade in 2011. The awards for Buechler and Lowe
give the Bruins 76 all-time weekly honors from the conference.
Buechler continued her outstanding freshman season, posting
13 kills in each of the UCLA victories. For the two matches, she
had 26 kills (2.89 per set), 19 digs (2.11 per set) and seven
blocks (0.78 per set), recording a .277 hitting percentage. She
opened the week with the first double-double of her career with
13 kills and a career-best 13 digs against Oregon, adding a .429
hitting percentage and four blocks. Versus Oregon State, she had
13 more kills and added six digs and three blocks.
A GRAND CLUB
On the penultimate point of the Oct. 5 match at Washington
State, senior Karsta Lowe recorded the 1,000th kill of her career,
becoming the 27th Bruin to join the grand club. Lowe now has
1,196 kills, putting her 22nd all-time. Next up on the list are
Jenny Johnson (21st, 1,212) and Brynn Murphy (20th, 1,242) ...
sophomore Taylor Formico surpassed 1,000 digs for her career
against Colorado on Oct. 12. She has 1,104, producing 792
during her freshman season at UCSB in 2012 and 312 this year.
EXPLORING THE UCLA RECORD BOOKS
It’s not only the total kills category that Lowe is climbing up the
UCLA rankings in. Her career kills per set average is 3.75, which
is seventh all-time as a Bruin. Lowe has a big gap between her
and eighth-place Daiva Tomkus (3.49) and is just .01 kps behind
sixth-place Ashley Bowles (3.76). Lowe’s .306 hitting percentage
is 10th all-time, just behind Jeanne Beauprey (.309) ... senior Zoë
Nightingale has moved into 10th in UCLA history in block assists
with 348. She is six shy of ninth-place Mariana Aquino (354).
Nightingale (407) is just eight digs shy of 10th-place Beauprey
(415) in total blocks.

SCOUTING THE COLORADO BUFFALOES
Colorado had an outstanding week in the desert, winning at then#15 Arizona last Friday in four sets before defeating #19 Arizona
State two days later in five sets. The Buffaloes have won four of
their last five matches, moving up to 21st in the national rankings
with their 15-9 overall record and 7-5 mark in Pac-12 play. Four
players are averaging over 2.00 kills per set, led by senior Taylor

while freshman Anna Pfefferle is first with 1.16 blocks per set.
THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. BUFFALOES
UCLA leads the all-time series with Colorado 7-2, but the Buffaloes
have won the last two, including a four-set win in Malibu on Oct.
12 (23-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-17). Karsta Lowe had 21 kills, Reily
Buechler added 11 kills and Taylor Formico recorded 12 digs. The

are 2-1 at Colorado, including a sweep at the Coors Events Center
on Nov. 9, 2012.
SCOUTING THE UTAH UTES
Utah, which hosts USC on Friday, is 12-11 on the year and 2-10 in
Pac-12 play. The Utes have dropped five in a row, including a fiveset loss at Arizona State last Friday. Three players are averaging

3.09 kps. Senior Shelby Dalton is second at 2.75 kps. Senior
Kalee Kirby (5.87 assists per set) and junior Kendall Cygan (4.97
aps) split the setting duties. Defensively, senior Lea Adolph is first
with 2.99 digs per set and senior Bailey Bateman (1.15 bps) and
redshirt freshman Carly Trueman (1.01) are each averaging over
a block per set.
THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. UTES

career high with 30 kills and hit .404, Reily Buechler added 20

Bruins won the last meeting between the two teams in Salt Lake
City, a five-set win on Nov. 10, 2012.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK’S ACTION
Sunday - #16 UCLA 3, Washington State 2
Senior Karsta Lowe led all players with 31 kills and added 11
digs for her fifth double-double of the season, as the 16th-ranked
Bruins came back to defeat Washington State in five sets on
Sunday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-15, 2325, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Lowe, who had her third match of the season with at least 30
kills, added five blocks, as UCLA (16-7, 7-5 Pac-12) tied a season
best with 12 roofs. Senior Julie Consani also had a double-double,
her third of the year, with 53 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Reily
Buechler recorded nine kills, redshirt sophomore Haley Lawless
had eight kills, four digs and three blocks, sophomore Claire Felix
tallied seven kills and senior Zoë Nightingale added five kills, four
digs and tied a season high with eight blocks. Defensively, three
had double figures in digs, with sophomore Taylor Formico posting
21, junior Karly Drolson tying a season best with 13 and junior
Rachel Inouye adding 10.
The Bruins never trailed in the opening set, scoring seven of
the first eight points on two kills apiece by Buechler and Felix, a
Formico ace and two Washington State attack errors. The closest
the Cougars (10-14, 1-11 Pac-12) would get for the rest of the
match was four at 8-4. At 14-8, a Felix kill, a WSU attack error and
back-to-back kills by Lowe opened the lead to double digits for
the first time at 18-8.
UCLA’s largest lead of the set was 11 on a couple of occasions,
as a kill by Felix closed out a 25-15 victory. The balanced Bruin
offensive attack saw Buechler, Felix and Lowe all record four kills,
with Felix not committing an error in six swings. Formico added
five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Cougars .462 to .036.
Set two saw the Bruins jump out to a small lead, but the Cougars
fought back to even the match. UCLA’s biggest edge was three at
7-4 and 9-6. Washington State scored four in a row from there to
go ahead 10-9 and did not trail for the rest of the set. In all, a 7-1
run for the Cougars brought their lead to 13-10.
Washington State’s largest lead was four on a pair of occasions,
but the second set win would not come easy for the visitors. At
23-20, a Felix kill and a Nightingale block got the Bruins to within
one at 23-22. But the Cougars sided out from there to win the set
25-23. Lowe was 6-for-11 with no errors in the set, while Buechler
and Felix each added three kills. Formico tallied six digs, as the

Bruins were out-hit .286 to .270.
The Bruins never led in set three, with the only tie coming at 1all. The Cougars came back with the next six points to go ahead
7-1. Five was as close as the Bruins would get for the rest of the
set. Washington State’s first double-figure advantage was at 15-5,
while its biggest lead was 12 at 21-9 and 22-10.
UCLA gained some momentum with a late run before ultimate
falling in the third. At 22-10, the Bruins scored eight straight points
on four Cougar errors, a kill and solo block from Nightingale, a
Lowe/Nightingale roof and a Lowe kill to get to within four, but
Washington State would take the set 25-20. Lowe had four kills in
the third to lead the Bruins, who were out-hit .048 to -.091.
It appeared Washington State was going to come away with the
upset victory until UCLA came back late in the fourth to force a
deciding set. The Cougars jumped out to five-point leads of 61, 8-3 and 9-4 before the Bruins made their comeback. An 82 UCLA run gave the home team a 12-11 lead. Lowe had two
kills during the run and combined with Nightingale on a block,
Nightingale and Lawless teamed up for a roof and WSU had four
attack errors.
The Cougars forged ahead again with a 5-1 run to take a 1613 edge and still led by three at 20-17 before UCLA closed the
set on an 8-1 run to win the fourth 25-21. Lowe had five of the
eight points on kills, which were accompanied by a Lawless/
Nightingale block, a WSU error and a Lawless kill to clinch the set.
Lowe had 10 of the Bruins’ 14 kills in the fourth, while Lawless
added three. Consani recorded five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the
Cougars .195 to .070.
The Bruins led early in set five 2-1 before a 4-0 WSU run put the
visitors up 5-2. The Cougars’ lead grew to as much as five at 9-4
before the Bruins began yet another comeback. Three Lowe kills
and a Cougar ball handling error made it 9-8 WSU. After a sideout,
kills by Buechler and Lawless and a Lawless/Nightingale block
put the Bruins ahead 11-10.

The score would be tied at 11, 12 and 13 before a Lawless kill
gave the Bruins match point. Lowe would finish things off with
her 31st kill to win the fifth 15-13, as UCLA closed the contest
on an 11-4 run. Lowe had seven of the Bruins’ 11 kills in the
decider, while Drolson added five digs, as the Bruins were out-hit
.333 to .241.
Friday - #2 Washington 3, #16 UCLA 0
Senior Karsta Lowe led the 16th-ranked Bruins with 11 kills,
while sophomore Taylor Formico added 11 digs, but UCLA
dropped a three-set decision to #2 Washington on Friday at
the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-8.
Freshman Reily Buechler recorded seven kills for the Bruins (157, 6-5 Pac-12), while junior Karly Drolson tallied six digs.
Washington (23-0, 12-0 Pac-12) led wire-to-wire in set one. The
Bruins were within two early at 7-5 before the Huskies went on a
6-1 run to go ahead 13-6. The Huskies’ largest lead of the set was
11 at 22-11, as they went on to win the opener 25-15. Lowe had
five kills in the first, while Buechler added three. The Bruins were
out-hit .619 to .450.
After dropping the first two points of set two, the Bruins rallied
to take their first lead of the match thanks to a UW service error
and kills by Lowe and redshirt sophomore Haley Lawless to make
it 3-2 UCLA. The Bruins led at 5-4, but it would be their last lead of
the set and the evening, as the Huskies reeled off three in a row
and a 10-1 run to make it 14-6.
Washington’s largest lead was nine at 17-8, as the Bruins from
that point could only get as close as four at 18-14. The Huskies
would win the second set 25-17. Buechler and Lowe each had
four kills, while Lawless added three. Defensively, Formico had six
digs and Drolson notched five. UCLA was out-hit .300 to .026.
The third set was all Huskies, who scored nine of the first 11 and
hit .533 for the set. Washington’s biggest lead of the set was 17,
which was also its final margin of the third at 25-8. The Bruins had
only four kills in the set, with Lowe providing half of them.

MICHAEL SEALY
HEAD COACH
FIFTH YEAR
UCLA, 1993
RECORD: 106-45 (.702)
Michael Sealy begins his fifth season as the head coach of the
UCLA women’s volleyball team in 2014. Sealy has a four-year
record of 90-38 for a .703 winning percentage and guided the
Bruins to a National Championship in 2011.
A trio of Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams in 2013,
as Karsta Lowe was named All-Pac-12 First Team to go with her
AVCA All-Region First Team and All-America Honorable Mention
accolades. Kelly Reeves was named All-Pac-12 Honorable
Mention and Claire Felix was recognized on the Pac-12 AllFreshman Team. UCLA went 15-15 last season, recording a 6-14
mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins were fifth in the league in hitting
percentage and kills per set and sixth in assists per set.
In 2012, the Bruins posted a 23-8 record, finishing in a tie
for fourth in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark and advancing to the
Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Two Bruins, Rachael
Kidder and Tabi Love, were named All-America, All-Region and
All-Pac-12, while Zoë Nightingale earned All-Pac-12 Honorable
Mention accolades.
UCLA was second in the nation in kills per set (14.76), third
in assists per set (13.84) and fifth in hitting percentage (.295),
which was also the second-best, single-season total in program
history. The Bruins led all Pac-12 teams in hitting and were
second in kps and aps.
In 2011, Sealy led the Bruins to the program’s fourth NCAA title and seventh National Championship. The
Bruins posted a 30-6 record and defeated four-time defending champion Penn State, #1-overall seed Texas,
Florida State and Illinois en route to the championship.
Sealy was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year. The Bruins finished second in the Pac-12 with
a 17-5 record. Six players were honored on the All-Conference teams, while Kidder, the Most Outstanding
Player of the NCAA Tournament, was a First Team All-America and All-Region selection.
UCLA finished fifth in the nation in assists per set (13.71) and eighth in kills per set (14.52). Among Pac12 teams, the Bruins ranked first in aps, second in kps and opponent hitting percentage (.160) and third
in digs per set (15.95).
In his first campaign, Sealy guided the Bruins to a 22-9 record, a fourth-place finish in the Pacific-10
Conference (11-7) and a Second-Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Three Bruins were named
to the All-Pac-10 team in 2010, Dicey McGraw (First Team), Lainey Gera (Honorable Mention) and Kidder
(Honorable Mention), while McGraw also earned AVCA All-Pacific Region Honorable Mention accolades.
UCLA finished in the top half of the Pac-10 in digs (2nd, 15.41), assists (4th, 13.46), kills (4th, 14.26) and
aces (5th, 1.20) per set along with opponent hitting percentage (4th, .187).
Sealy spent part of the summer of 2012 in London at the Olympic Games, serving as a scout coach for
the U.S. men’s volleyball team.
UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced on Feb. 10, 2010 that Sealy was named head coach
of the Bruin women’s volleyball program. Sealy returned to his alma mater after spending four seasons
(2006-09) as an associate head coach at the University of Hawai’i. He was a three-time All-American and
an assistant coach for four years with the UCLA men’s volleyball team and was an assistant with the Bruin
women’s volleyball program in 2005.
“We are excited to welcome back Michael Sealy to lead the women’s volleyball program,” Guerrero said.
“Michael clearly possesses the necessary credentials to allow UCLA to compete at the highest level. He is
well-respected in the volleyball community and has an enthusiastic and passionate approach towards the
game. Furthermore, as a former Bruin player and coach, he understands the tradition of excellence that
has defined the volleyball programs at UCLA and I am confident that he will continue that legacy of success
with ambition and integrity.”
“I am very excited and inspired to be back at UCLA,” said Sealy. “I feel very fortunate and humbled to take
over a program with such a storied history. I would like to thank Dan Guerrero and (Senior Associate Athletic
Director/Senior Women’s Administrator) Petrina Long for giving me this opportunity and for supporting my
vision for the future of the program.”
Sealy helped Hawai’i to a berth in the National Semifinals in 2009. The Rainbow Wahine recorded their
second-straight, 30-win season last year, going 32-3 overall. They also posted a 16-0 mark in conference
play to earn their 14th-straight Western Athletic Conference title and went on to claim their 10th-consecutive
WAC Tournament championship. Sealy’s record during his tenure at Hawai’i was 119-19 (.862 winning
percentage).
Prior to his stint at Hawai’i, Sealy coached for four seasons at UCLA, where he was an assistant on the men’s
side from 2003-2006 and an assistant for the women’s volleyball team in 2005. In his lone season on the
women’s side, the Bruins posted a 20-11 record and advanced to the Regional Semifinals. With the UCLA
men, Sealy was 91-38 (.705) during his four campaigns, helping the Bruins to an NCAA Championship in 2006
and an NCAA Runner-Up finish in 2005. Sealy was also a volunteer assistant with the Cal State Northridge
men’s volleyball team in 2000 before working in the same capacity with the UCLA men in 2001.
One of the top setters in UCLA history, Sealy was a four-year letterwinner with the Bruins from 1990-93 and
ranks fourth in Bruin annals in assists (4,749). In his senior season, Sealy and the Bruins won the program’s
14th National Championship, going 24-3. The team captain was named the co-Most Outstanding Player of the
1993 NCAA Tournament and also earned ASICS/Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year and AVCA All-American
first-team honors. In addition, Sealy was named an All-American in 1991 (first-team) and 1992 (third-team),
as well as All-Conference three times. The Bruins won three conference titles during Sealy’s playing days,
going 80-24 (.769) during his four years.
Following his playing career in Westwood, Sealy went on to play professionally in Switzerland, Belgium,
Holland and Puerto Rico. He also played with the U.S. National Team in 1994 and 1997.
Sealy graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a degree in physiological science.
