Council Applying for
Black Spot Funding
– Requesting Comments
The Berry
Alliance
The following letter from Council describes a nominated project for Federal Government Black
Spot Funding. The project is right near the “Bum Tree” site on Crooked River Road near Beach
Road.
The Alliance have written to Council requesting an extension of time for comment (currently
stated as 24 October 2014). Council have responded saying “Regarding the deadline for
comments, this stands as is, however we are happy to receive any feedback after the deadline,
particularly as this project is currently un-funded and is very preliminary at this stage.”
We are unsure why the deadline could not have been changed but are told that they are happy
to receive any feedback after the deadline.
Please send us any comments you would like us to pass on or that should be taken into
account when the Berry Alliance responds.

YOUR REF:

Dear Secretary
Federal Blackspot Project Nominated for delivery in 2015/16
Crooked River Road, north of Beach Road, Berry
I write to you to advise of a road safety project that has been nominated for delivery under the
Federal Governments’ Nation Building Black Spot program in the 2015/16 financial year and
welcome your feedback.
The $145,000 project proposes to improve safety by installing guardrail on both sides of the
road to protect large trees, as detailed in the attached diagram.
This is very preliminary advice as the projects have just been nominated and Council is unlikely
to receive notification of any approvals until May or June in 2015. When Council is made
aware of the outcome of the applications we will further advise.
At this stage however Council is interested in receiving your opinion in regards to this project.
It would be appreciated if your comments either in writing or by phone could be received by
24 October 2014.
I can be contacted directly on (02) 4429 3142, or written comments can be forwarded to
Council’s General Manager via email ([email protected]). Please quote
Council’s reference 28099E (D14/251189).
Yours faithfully

Berry Alliance Community Information Forum
Thursday 6th November
7pm at the Berry Courthouse
All Berry Community Members are invited to
hear about these two local topics.
The two topics for information are:
RMS Changes to Northern
on and off ramps for
FIRST (Sydney)
Berry and the Local Access
TOPIC: Road outside Mananga
Homestead.
The original plans that the RMS had
published and discussed for these roads
have been changed in the detail when their
final plans were reviewed.
There was an issue with the intersection of
the access road past Mananga Homestead
that connected approx. 6 properties to the
new Highway alignment and Berry who
currently have direct access on to the existing
Highway.
The original plans did not allow sufficient
turn space and other safety issues at the
intersection. The RMS along with Fulton
Hogan who are constructing the new highway
alignment proposed to one or two of the
property owners that the access road should
swing wider than originally proposed and
encroach on to the Mananga property.
They proposed this as an alternative to having
to destroy all or most of the five mature trees
outside Mananga Homestead. The problem
was that the new design encroached on the
Historic area (including Managa land and a
shed.)
Following meetings and discussions with
them Fulton Hogan and the RMS have redrawn this access road intersection. The new
proposal does not encroach on any historic
area or property, safeguards the five trees
(with one tree possibly needed to be removed
after the works are completed – subject to a
safety audit at the completion of the work)
and provides a safe and appropriate access
road for these properties.
Other ideas and suggestions were also
canvassed during these meetings and these
will be presented at this Information Forum.
The final plans will also be put up in the
Community Notice Board in Broughton Walk.

SECOND
TOPIC:
Rotary Berry Proposal for an
Adventure Playground
Proposed for the land that will be left
following the Highway re-alignment –
between the new highway and North Street
next to the skatepark, tennis courts and the
playing fields. Rotary have asked the Berry
Alliance to hold an Information Session so
the community can learn more about their
proposal and ask any questions they may
have.
Rotary describe it here:
“Interest in developing a children’s adventure
playground in Berry is growing. The Rotary
Club of Berry has already commenced
fundraising for it and sees an adventure
playground as a priority local community
project. The concept is to develop the
playground and associated picnic facilities
near the skatepark in North St Berry once the
Bypass is completed.
“An adventure playground will not only be
popular with the children of Berry, but has
the potential to become a significant tourist
attraction in its own right
right. Berry currently
offers few reasons for young families to stop
and visit, and the Berry Bypass will only
exacerbate this.
“With strong community support, Berry
has the opportunity to gain one of the best
children’s adventure playgrounds in Australia. If you would like to find out more about
the playground, please come along to the
Berry Community Forum at the Berry Courthouse 7pm Thursday 6 November, where a
presentation of the concept will be given.”

Spring has sprung and

there are quite a few more booked in for
before Christmas. The new wedding
season then commences in January and

garden is the perfect venue. We also host other events such as cocktail parties, meetings, art
shows as well as morning and afternoon teas.
So please consider us when you are looking for your next function or event. We offer a very
good rate for a very good venue.

NOVEMBER 2014
For Bill and Karen,
the owners of Festive
Treasures, the newest
boutique gift shop in
Berry, moving to Berry is
a dream come true.
“Everyone is so friendly”, Karen
said, “and we just love the
country air, the scenery and the
wildlife.” Karen and Bill have both
spent time living in the country,
although recently they have been
living and working in Sydney.
When they visited friends in
Berry earlier this year they both
fell in love with the beauty of
the area, the friendliness of the
local people and the tangible
atmosphere of happiness and
contentment. They have bought
a home in Jaspers Brush and are
looking forward to becoming
more involved in the community.
They saw an opportunity to add
‘Festive Treasures’
to the Berry shopping experience
for both visitors and locals. After
looking around the stores in Berry
they have put together a carefully
selected collection of gifts that
until now has not been available
in Berry. “At ‘Festive Treasures’ we
want to offer a new range of gifts
and decorations for celebrating
life’s precious moments with
family and friends”, said Bill.
The name of the shop, ‘Festive
Treasures’ has been deliberately
chosen. ‘Festive’ refers to
special times of celebration and
decoration such as weddings,
birthdays, christenings and of
course, Christmas and Easter.
‘Treasures’ are items of enduring
value to be given, received or
shared with family and friends
to turn times of celebration into
memorable precious moments.
Bill and Karen hope you will
accept their invitation to come
and enjoy browsing through the
collection of gifts and decorations
they have carefully selected as
festive treasures.
“We hope you will enjoy exploring
the treasures as much as we have
enjoyed collecting them and we
look forward to meeting you.”
‘Festive Treasures’ will open
its doors on Saturday 1st
November and will be open
7 days a week from 10am to
5pm (except Christmas Day
and Boxing Day).
If you mention you read about ‘Festive
Treasures’ in The Town Crier you will get
10% discount off your first purchase.

Berry Community Preschool
It was an exciting start to Term 4 with two
visits from Shoalhaven Zoo on Friday, 10
and Monday 13 October. The children were
enthralled with the hands-on educational
sessions and had a wonderful time getting up
close with Chub Chubs the Iguana, Matilda
the baby Wombat, Squeeze the Burmese
Python and Blossom the Ring-Tailed Possum.
In Art with Meg on Wednesdays the children
have been exploring Surrealist art and have
had fun drawing real things in a surreal
(not real) way. Salvador Dali’s melting clock
artworks certainly inspired the children to
use their imaginations when drawing fantasy
pictures.
The children who are heading to Big School
next year have also been drawing a picture
for the Kindergarten Teachers and we have
been having some great conversations
about school for the beginning of our school
transition. Lots of orientation activities are
planned for the coming months to ensure the
children are ready for the move to primary
school.
Get your running shoes on and dust off
your Santa hat for the inaugural Berry Santa
Dash, which this year will be hosted by Berry
Community Preschool. The 2014 Berry Merry
Christmas Parade will be host to the short
run which will start at the Great Southern
Hotel and finish in front of the Berry Hotel
(approximately 250 metres). It will be the first
event of the Christmas Parade, so will start
at approximately 5:45 pm on Wednesday, 3
December.
Race entry will be $10 per person which will
be payable on the day, although there will
soon be an email address to
pre-register your interest. We
recommend
pre-registration
in order to gauge numbers
participating.
Like
our
Facebook page ‘The Berry
Christmas Parade Santa Dash’
to keep up to date with all the
latest. We are hoping that
this event will be included in
the Berry Merry Christmas
Parade each year. This first
year all proceeds will go
to The Berry Community
Preschool but next year
another community group
can apply to host the event.
Dress MUST be festive! You can be a fullyfledged Santa or just dangle some baubles
from your ears, but we ask that you are
creative and enter the Festive Spirit. Please
get involved! This has the potential to be a
truly hilarious event!

Berry & District Garden Club News
Spring has seen a burst of new energy, not only
in our gardens, but in our diaries as members
have taken advantage of Open Gardens and
Garden Festivals. We are spoiled for choice in
the Shoalhaven with beautiful gardens from
Bateman’s Bay to the Highlands an easy
drive away. Our Coming Events calendar on
the website provides many temptations for a
garden-loving day out.
The highlight, though, has been our club
outing to the Leura Gardens Festival. A
coachload of 46 members spent a delightful
and, surprisingly, leisurely day touring five
gardens offering oceans, not merely swathes,
of bluebells, bulbs, azaleas and other spring
flowering delights. Blue Mist, a Paul Sorensen
garden, also offered magnificent “borrowed”
views beyond its winding paths and stone
walling into the Jamieson Valley.
Frequently seen in Australian gardens
now, stone walling was not common when
landscape designer, Danish born Paul
Sorensen arrived in Australia in 1915.
Trained in Denmark, Paul worked there, in
Germany and in Switzerland before coming
to Sydney. He established a nursery in Leura,
offering design and maintenance work as
arden
well. His largest and most famous garden
is Everglades in Leura, designed
and built for Sydney businessman
Henri Van de Velde in 1934. Now
owned by The National Trust,
Everglades is a showcase for
Sorensen design and plantings.
Often referred to as Australia’s first
“Master Gardener”, Paul Sorensen’s
design principles are evident in
many Blue Mountains gardens.
Less well known is his work on three
properties in the Illawarra - Glennifer
Brae, which adjoins Wollongong

Ray of
of Giving
Giving
Two well-known local organisations have joined forces to collect gifts for underprivileged children this coming Christmas season.
From the 1st of December you can contribute to less fortunate families in our
community by wrapping up a child’s gift and popping the gift under the tree in the
Ray White Berry Office, located at 112 Queen Street. All you need to do is purchase a small gift, wrap it and drop it under the tree. Gifts will be delivered in the
week prior to Christmas to Paradise Farms and Care South.
Tell the Ray White team if the gift is for a boy or a girl and their age and your gift
will be delivered, thanks to the Rotary Club of Berry, to underprivileged children
who will appreciate the lift to their festive season.
“It’s a really simple way to make a difference to children who might otherwise go
without this Christmas,” Ray White’s Shane Hilaire said.

NEWS FROM BERRY MUSEUM
BERRY AND
WORLD WAR I
From November 2014 to November 2015 the Berry
and District Historical Society Inc. will host a yearlong display at the Berry Museum on the contribution
made by the people of Berry to the war effort, the men
and women who served and those left behind at home.
War was declared on 4th August 1914 and within days men from Berry had enlisted. From
November until January 2015 the display will concentrate on those “early enlisters”. As well,
there is interesting material on the causes of the war, Australia’s first engagements in the war,
and the contributions of women and children, through the Red Cross and the Comforts Fund.
Berry’s participation will be situated within the wider context of the World War.
An example of the material in the display is a postcard written home by Walter Host.
Walter Host was on his way to the First World War. Seventeen years old, from Jasper’s Brush,
he enlisted at Randwick on August 17, 1914. The troops were diverted to Egypt for training.
Walter was very impressed by the size of the pyramids. Most of these young men had seen
very little of the wider world.
“Dear Mother, Our destination is Cairo not England. We are to be stationed about 7 miles out of
Cairo. Address all letters to the same address, the authorities will forward them on. Have been
having a good time. Hope we have a go at the Turks. Wal.”
The Berry Museum has a small but very good collection of documents and artefacts which
bring the reality of this terrible war home to us.
We invite you to visit the Museum several times during the coming year to learn about and
commemorate the contribution made by the people of Berry as the display will change every
three months. Each change will concentrate on a different part of the war enabling us to show
you the whole of it sequentially.

BERRY MEN’S SHED
A PROJECT OF THE BERRY UNITING CHURCH
GARAGE SALE A GREAT SUCCESS
Members of the Shed in their new shirts at the garage sale in the old church hall.
Berry community for their support. This year we focused on quality items of wood work, mainly
items that were produced by members of the Shed. Train sets and other toys made by member
Terry Smith went very quickly along with wooden reindeers which will prove very popular for
Christmas. We must also acknowledge some items of furniture that were kindly donated by
friends of members. Our next sale will be held around March next year to coincide with the
State election.
Some of the money raised will go towards the cost of our new defibulator, recently purchased
for the welfare of our members and which is also available during other community functions
including the Computer group.
Our membership continues to grow and with the large number of projects being requested
every member of the Shed is busy contributing in someway.
Later this month we will be receiving a visit from local member Gareth Ward who is bringing
along a cheque to cover the shortfall for the cost of the defibulator and members are looking
forward to sharing morning tea with Gareth who has been a keen supporter of the Shed over
the years.
Next year the Shed will be turning 10 years old and the Committee is starting to plan for a
special celebration. Meanwhile this year’s Christmas Party will be held at the Berry Bowling
Club on Thursday 11th December. All members are welcome to attend and witness the
presentation of the Tardis award to the outstanding Shed member for the year.
Members of the community are always welcome to call into the Shed and meet with the
Supervisor on duty who will be happy to show you around the Shed.
The Shed phone number is 4464 3956 and our operating days are Tuesday and Thursday
between 9.00am and 4.00pm.
Richard Wiseman - Secretary
As I prepare this item for the Town Crier firstly
I must apologise for my lack of input for the
last month; the way the days get away on us.
Today I have been baking Christmas cakes
in preparation for our next street stall that
will be held on Saturday 29th November in
Broughton Court, Berry, commencing at
8.00am. This year I will again take orders
for cakes in advance so if you wish to have a
cake please contact Trish on 44641693. They
will be $35.00 each (same price as last year).
Speaking of Christmas, the Combined Charity
Card Shop that celebrates its 45 years of
operation in Kiama will open on Wednesday
12th November 2014. The card shop gives
the opportunity for members of the public to
purchase cards whilst supporting a variety
of charities. The he profits raised will then
be distributed to the following participating
charities: Save the Children fund, the
Australian Red Cross, Children’s Medical
Research institute, Cystic Fibrosis, Frontier
Services, Leprosy Mission, Bible society, and
Saint Vincent de Paul.
The card shop is staffed by volunteers from
each charity and the Kiama Presbyterian
Church. The card shop is supported by Kiama
Council and will be opened on weekdays
from Wednesday 12th November until the
5th December at the Old Council Building,
Manning St. Kiama from 10am to 4pm daily.
If you would like to learn more about the
work carried out by the mission and how the
money raised by our local group is distributed
you are always welcome to come along and
join our small group of supporters who meet
every alternate month.
For more information call Trish on 4464 1693
or 0401 151 820, we would welcome your
support.

Rotary Helps
Thailand’s
Students Access
Clean Drinking
Water
When Rotary Club of Berry member Walter
Moore led a study exchange team to Thailand
his team took on a project that has resulted in
real benefits for the villages they visited.
In 2011 our local Rotary district (southeastern
NSW and the ACT) joined efforts with a
Rotary district in southern Thailand to hold
a Rotary study exchange examining water
and sanitation issues in each country.
The Australian team members, young
professionals aged 25-35, found there were
many villages in southern Thailand without
ready access to clean drinking water, unless
it is purchased in bottle form.
The local study team made a promise to
work with the Thailand Rotarians to develop
low-cost water treatment systems for some
of these villages. In 2013 a proposal came
from the Ratchaburi Rotary Club to build
small-scale water treatment systems at two
schools. A vending machine added to the
systems would allow community members
to purchase clean water in bulk at a much
lower price.
The proposal was reviewed and developed
into a funding application for The Rotary
Foundation, the charitable funding arm
of Rotary. Through the Rotary system of
matching grants $7,000 in contributions
from Australian Rotary clubs, including the
Rotary Club of Berry, was able to secure
the $36,000 required to build the two water
treatment systems including, tanks, filters,
electrical supplied and refurbishments to
buildings.
Support for Adventure
Playground Growing
Thai primary school children with clean
water for washing.
The two water treatment systems, at Wat Na
Nong and Wat Thai Mueang schools were
officially opened in July 2014. These projects
will provide over 300 students and 4,000
local residents with access to clean water for
drinking and hand washing.
Interest in developing a children’s adventure
playground in Berry is growing. The Rotary
Club of Berry has already commenced
fundraising for it and sees an adventure
playground as a priority local community
project. The concept is to develop the
playground and associated picnic facilities
near the skatepark in North St Berry once the
Bypass is completed.
An adventure playground will not only be
popular with the children of Berry, but has
the potential to become a significant tourist
attraction in its own right. Berry currently
offers few reasons for young families to stop
and visit, and the Berry Bypass will only
exacerbate this.
With strong community
support, Berry has the
opportunity to gain one
of the best children’s
adventure
playgrounds
in Australia. If you would
like to find out more about
the playground, please
come along to the Berry
Community Forum at the
Berry Courthouse 7pm
Thursday 6 November,
where a presentation of
the concept will be given.
For information on the
Rotary Club of Berry
contact President Tina
Ballard 4464 2118.

BERRY SPINNERS AND WEAVERS
RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
The Berry Spinners and Weavers recently acquired a book
entitled “Knit the Alphabet” and we decided to give ourselves
a challenge – to knit each letter of ‘BERRY SPINNERS &
WEAVERS’ with the idea of making them into a 3-D banner to
display at events that we attend.
Each letter is made in one piece – so no need for sewing up seams – but
this turned out to be a real challenge as some of the letters proved to be
somewhat tricky to knit and then to stuff. Members volunteered to knit one
letter each – the ‘I’ was one of the first to be completed as it was the easiest pattern. Knitting
the ‘&’ was especially complicated and one of our very experienced knitters ‘was volunteered’
for this task.
The members of the Berry Spinners and Weavers rose nobly to the challenge and, after much
muttering under our breath, ably completed the 21 letters. Each maker stamped their own
mark on their chosen letter by using different yarns and different size needles and sometimes
even different techniques. The resulting banner with its eclectic mix of sizes and colours is
proudly displayed on the wall in the Spinners and Weavers Hall.
We meet at the hall at the Albany Street gate of the Berry Showground on Thursdays 10am
to 12noon. Come and check us out. We are an active group and always looking for new
members. You can knit? So it might be time to learn to spin and weave too! Well, come along
on Thursdays. You can’t knit? Well, come along and we will teach you!

On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, the
ladies of Berry Evening View Club meet at
Berry Bowling Club, for dinner and a pleasant
evening of friendship and entertainment. We
are a mixed group of age, and interests,
many are long time locals, others have lived
in Berry for few years, and some are quite
new to the area.
We extend a warm welcome to everyone,
with encouragement to be part of a very
important, long standing organisation
working together, helping people less
fortunate than themselves. If you would
like to learn more about us, come to our
next meeting on Wednesday November
17th, 6.30 for 7,00,at Berry Bowling
Club . Bookings for dinner can be made
by ringing Kath Bowley, 44641032.Or
perhaps you might prefer to join us for
coffee on Thursday November 6th at
Delicious Cafe, in Albert Street, around
10.30. Our guest speaker for November
is Ashleigh McQuarter, who will give us
some interesting information on Lyme
Disease, something very few people
know about.
We are approaching Christmas, and the View
Club ladies will be very busy at Stocklands
shopping centre, raising money, gift
wrapping, for a gold donation, so if you do
not like struggling with awkward parcels, our
ladies will do it for you, with a smile.

LANDCARE BERRY
Register of
Significant
Trees for Berry
and its District:
Berry Landcare has developed a proposal
to create a community-based register of
significant trees for Berry and its district. The
register would exist as a gallery on an internet
website and nominations could be submitted
on line. An initial grant towards this project
has been provided by the Berry Garden
Club from the proceeds of the recent 2014
Garden Festival. Since the Berry Chamber of
Commerce declared the town to be ‘The Town
of Trees’ in 1970, trees have become integral
to the character and identity of the town.
Valuable inventory information has already
been compiled by groups such as the Berry
Historical Society. Most attention has been
focused on the rich heritage of planted trees
within the townscape. It seems appropriate
that this focus should now be extended to
the surrounding district and to include wild
and remnant native trees. A register created
and managed by the local community, which
brings together all of our valued trees: exotic,
endemic, wild and planted, would be a major
asset in raising environmental awareness and
celebrating our landscape heritage. It could
also assist in managing our landscape and
ecology. Critical to the success of this project
will be its local community origin, and the
voluntary nature of all listings. The register
will not seek to restrict landowner rights, but
aim to raise awareness and pride in the trees
we value.
Weeds and Native of the Month:
Wild olives are hardy ever green trees. There
two types the African Olive (Olea europaea
ssp cupidata) and the European Olive (O.
europaea ssp europaea). The European is
more common as a weed around the Berry
area. The small fruit are inedible by humans.
The leaves are narrow with dark green upper
surface. The African with larger fruit is less
common on the South Coast but is potentially
as invasive. It infects Western Sydney and
Southern Wollongong. They can be easily
pulled out as seedlings. As trees they require
poisoning.
An australian native of similar habit to the
Olives is the Water Gum (Tristaniopis laurina).
This can be a large tree in rainforests but in
cultivation it is a small evergreen tree with a
dense rounded crown. It features are mottled
smooth bark and yellow flowers in Dec-Jan.
It is native throughout the South Coast. It is a
popular street tree in Sydney.

BERRY CWA 2014News
The year’s end is approaching but there is no time for the
busy fingers to stop the work that began at the beginning
of the year.
The Jumble and Car Boot sale was held on a very busy Berry
weekend. People were out and about and still had time to visit the
CWA event. Thank you to all who supported us in this venture. As
usual the Devonshire Tea was a real hit but our sad news is that our
scone maker extraordinaire is hanging up her apron and handing over
to an “apprentice” yet to be nominated. Esme was presented with a
beautiful bouquet of Australian wildflowers as a heartfelt thank you
for all her years of never-tiring service, often standing in hot weather
close by the hot stove to turn out that perfect scone. Thank you Esme
from all of us.
Cooking is not over yet as we have been reminded of the next competition
to be held in the coming weeks as well as the group competition at
Kiama. We look forward to this time as the Berry Primary School
and our junior members

enter their cakes and put us on our guard and show us their expertise
in the results they turn out. We will certainly be watching and learning
from this up and coming generation.
The General Meeting held in October was informative and challenged
us to push ahead for the year ahead. Reports from various officers
reminded us of the work that has been accomplished during the past
year. Wow! And indeed it was a “wow” to hear these various reports.
Mrs Trish Nicholson of the Leprosy Mission was our guest speaker.
The Leprosy Mission Australia, which has celebrated 100 years in
Australia, is a global fellowship, involved in 30 countries. Australia
as a supporting country focuses its projects in Timor Leste, Nigeria,
Papua New Guinea, Nepal, India and Thailand. Leprosy (Hansen’s
Disease) is a bacterial infection of the skin and nerves, transmitted
from the lining of the nose with infection to the skin and respiratory
tract. Close and frequent contact is required for the transmission of
this disease. A blood test is necessary to indicate the development of
leprosy, and a multi-drug therapy has significantly improved its
treat
treatment. It is a notifiable disease and rare in Australia.

Berry Ethics Society
Ethics at Berry Primary needs teachers for 2015
Have some spare time and looking for something interesting to
stretch yourself?
How about signing up to teach ethics for one hour a week at the local
Berry primary school? There’s really no better way to engage with the local
community than giving some of your time and experience back to local kids.
And it’s great fun to challenge kids to think and argue their point of view!
Since early 2011, NSW public school children have had a legal right to
attend classes in philosophical ethics at their school, as an alternative to the
Scripture/SRE (Special Religious Education) classes. At Berry Public we
have been offering Ethics classes to students since 2012. Ethics classes are
available to children across all ages, from Kindergarten to Year 6.
The student attendance for ethics classes has continued to grow year by
year, with the demand for teachers increasing as a result. We currently have
6 ethics teachers at Berry, but demand is growing. We can only provide
these Primary Ethics classes if we have trained volunteers from the wider
community.
What is ethics? Ethics is a branch of philosophy that examines issues
that are relevant to our lives and, evaluating what is right or wrong by the use
of rational thought - a tradition that goes right back to Socrates. Students
learn to think about ethical issues together, by building their own view and
engaging in the give-and-take of reasoned argument. This process allows
students to properly consider other people’s points of view and to be respectful
in dealing with their differences and disagreements. They learn that they need
to substantiate their view, rather than just hold an opinion.
Our K-6 curriculum introduces children to the foundation of ethical thinking.
Children in the younger primary years examine issues such as being left out,
sharing, truthfulness and honesty; while older children are encouraged to
use deductive thinking on ethical issues such as animal cruelty, rascism,
and cheating. Other aspects include understanding consequences, having
empathy and appreciating difference; all within a moral framework that they
build themselves. Students learn to recognise good and bad reasoning by
introducing notions such as moral relevance (i.e. what is moral to one person
is not necessarily moral to another), and the idea of weighing reasons against
each other.
Research shows that well-reasoned moral judgement does not develop
automatically as young people mature and that these skills are best developed
using the methods we employ in ethics classes. Once acquired, these skills
accompany individuals into adulthood, hopefully leading to better personal
relationships and a better society.
How can you apply? Just go to the Primary Ethics website (www.primaryethics.
com.au) and apply online. Or call Christopher May at 0451 153 332.

If you have any unwanted items you would like to donate we would be very
grateful. Unfortunately we cannot accept large items of furniture or electrical

EBOLA COLLECTION
Berry Branch will once again be collecting for the Ebola Crisis at the Berry
Fair on Sunday the 2nd November. So please look out for the collection if
you would like to contribute to help control this outbreak of a lethal disease.
RED CROSS DISPLAY
The Red Cross display that has been held at the Berry Museum stopped at
the end of October. However some of it will continue as part of the World War
I Display as that is when the Australian Red Cross started and it played a big
part in supporting the Australian troops in that war.
100TH AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Eight members of the Berry Branch of the Red Cross attended the NSW
Annual General Meeting of the Red Cross which was held in Parramatta Town
Hall on Tuesday 23rd September.
There were some very interesting talks given such as that by Robert Tickner,
who is Chief Executive Officer of Red Cross in Australia, on the history of the
Red Cross movement in Australia.
One of the awards given was to Nowra Branch who received third place in the
award for raising the most money.
SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE RED CROSS
The Red Cross provides many services. Some of them are in our own local
community, others involve serving in other communities or overseas.
They cover a lot of different areas such as supplying breakfast in schools to
children who would otherwise go without and this would greatly affect their
performance at school. Others are teaching people to drive so they can go to
job interviews and get a job in areas such as ours where there is limited public
transport or helping young families with parenting skills.
In future articles we will give more detail on these services to let you know
what Red Cross means and what it does. You might find an area that you
would like to be involved in.

NOVEMBER 2014
Think Pink!
It’s that time of year! Christmas decorations are appearing in the shops and
many in the local horse horse riding fraternity are looking forward to the annual
Berry Riding Club Pink Ribbon Horse Festival at Berry Showground. All are
welcome to come along and join in the fun on Saturday 13th of December for the
Funkhana and Sunday 14th for dressage competitions. Wear something pink or
dress yourself and your horse in pink from hoof to ears and support the club in its
efforts to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. Further information is available
on the website.
Spring has sprung! The grass has risen and BRC is very very busy! The club held another
very successful Interschools Championship over the October Long Weekend. Worrigee
Equestrian Common became a sea of horse floats as young riders from near and far competed
in Dressage, Hacking, Show Hunter, Showjumping, Sporting and Working Equitation classes.
The Interschools concept has gone from strength to strength since being introduced Nationally
and special mention must go to BRC Junior members Zoe Hutchinson and Tayla Vuleta for
being selected to represent NSW at the National Interschools Championships in 2014. Well
done girls on your fantastic achievements!
In October the club also held a two day Working Equitation Clinic with World Champion Pedro
Neves. The clinic was a huge success with Pedro passing on his knowledge and expertise to
the riders fortunate enough to attend. A highlight of the clinic was to be able to watch and learn
while he rode various participants own horses. Pedro is currently conducting clinics all around
Australia as Working Equitation is rapidly growing in popularity. A special thank you must go
to Julee Jones for organising the clinic and playing host to Pedro.
Spring really has been a hectic time as the Club also held its Dressage Championships as
well as Working Equitation, Show Jumping and Dressage training and competition days. On
the 6th of September the party animals gathered together to celebrate the BRC equivalent of
the Oscars: aka the Annual Presentation Night. This was an occasion where those who had
excelled throughout the year got to take home a host of prizes, including lovely embroidered
rugs (every horsey persons favourite award). Well: as my Nan used to say “You’ve got to be in
it to win it”. Happy riding one and all! www.berryridingclub.com
As we go into our last term for the year I often
get asked what benefits does a young child
receive from attending Mainly Music or a similar
activity other than just opportunity to get out of
the house. So hear are just a few reasons for you
to consider. Firstly for children, music means
active participation. When we choose musical
activities that include movement, speech, rhythm
and melody, we’re activating both the left and
right hemispheres of the brain. This introduces
children to speech pattern and sensory motor
skills, helping the child to anticipate and simple,
clear melodies with repetition and rhythm provides
a safe framework for response by the child.
Research shows that we must encourage parents
to sing to their children, even if they feel selfconscious about their singing voices. Whilst they
may read to their children, many parents don’t
include lap games, poems, finger plays or nursery
rhymes in their child’s weekly schedule.
Yet the language development opportunities
provided by songs and finger plays are a crucial
part of a child’s intellectual development. Our
musical heritage of lullabies and nursery rhymes
has to be nurtured so we do not lose it. CDs cannot
replace an adult who shows obvious enjoyment
in music. When parents use musical play ,they
enhance the development of vocabulary, logic,
conceptual understanding, spatial reasoning
,rhythmic skills and language acquisition.
We welcome you to come along and enjoy the
time at our Tuesday morning session held at Berry
Community Church from 10.00am each week
during school term, at a cost of $5.00 per family.

Advancing the status of women and girls
locally and internationally.
SING, GIRLS, SING
A little known fact – along with all the other
achievements that Zonta is known for – an
enthusiastic group of members has formed
a small choir and meets regularly in a studio
in Berry to air its’ lungs and constantly add
to its’ repertoire of popular, well-loved songs,
ably led by Zontian and talented local singing
teacher, Rosalie Fletcher. The choir has so far
entertained residents at Bupa, The International
Women’s Day Breakfast, The Masonic Village
and Berry Hospital Palliative Care Unit. It’s
all a huge amount of fun and the choir’s next
public appearance will be at the Berry Merry
Christmas Night – so look out for a band of redand-white-clad Zontians singing cheerily in the
main street – and feel free to throw money into
the donation bucket to help us with our next
project supporting and helping women.
MORNING TEA
Don’t forget that the club meets socially once a
month at Our Book Shop in Berry for an informal
get-together for an hour or so, and anyone
interested in learning what Zonta is all about is
more than welcome to join. Next day will be
Tuesday, November 18 at 10am. If daytime
meetings are not convenient, all women (or
men) are most welcome to attend our monthly
dinner meetings (details below). There will,
however, be no meeting in December.
LATEST INDUCTION
The membership continues to grow with the
club welcoming Claire Jennings into our ranks.
Claire is a lawyer from Nowra, has a young
family, and we are delighted she will find time in
her busy life to contribute to Zonta.
WHITE RIBBON DAY
In keeping with Zonta’s philosophy of Advancing the Status of Women and Girls Locally
and Internationally, the club will be supporting
the Nowra-based White Ribbon Day activities,
details of which are yet to come to hand.
The date is November 25 and is nationally
recognized as it draws attention to the scourge
in our society of violence, be it physical or
verbal, especially in the home environment.
On White Ribbon Day 2013, Zonta sponsored
a series of showings of a DVD illustrating the
horrors of domestic violence and these were
screened in all local cinemas.
Look out for community members wearing the
distinctive white ribbon on the 25th November
and add your voice in advocacy or action.
Violence in any shape or form must not be
tolerated and this special day gives everyone
an opportunity to voice their opposition to this
horror.
MEETING DETAILS
Dinner meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday
of the month at Gabby’s Restaurant, Berry, 6.30
for 7pm. Please call Mary Seelis on 4464 1191
to book. Visitors are most welcome.
