PRAYER UPON ENTERING: Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast
away the works of darkness and put upon ourselves the armor of light now
in the time of this mortal life in which Your Son, Jesus Christ, came to visit
us in great humility, that in the Last Day, when He shall come again in
glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to life
immortal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
WELCOME: We cordially welcome you to the Lord's Service. If you are
worshipping with us for the first time, the following suggestions may be
helpful to you:
Put your bulletin in the back of the hymnal. A panel will stick out on the
right side with the Order of Service. By doing this, both hands are free to
find the liturgy and hymns.
Large print bulletins and hearing devices are available. Please ask an usher
for assistance.
The Music Room, the room to your right before entering the sanctuary,
is available for parents with small children who need to step out during
the service. The service is televised in the Music Room.
The time before the service is a time of prayer and preparation to receive
the Lord’s gifts of salvation. In addition to prayer, look over the readings
and the words to the hymns during this preparation time.
Please turn off all cell phones and refrain from taking pictures during the
service. Thank you.
GUESTS AND THE LORD'S SUPPER: If you desire to commune, please speak
to one of the pastors before the service. Our altar is open to those who
confess oneness with us in doctrine, are members of our congregation or
sister congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and are not
under church discipline in another congregation.
Stewardship Thought for the week...
Matthew 25:4 “….but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.” Why
did they take flasks of oil with them? Because they listened to the
Bridegroom’s words and believed them. Our actions always start with and
flow from our beliefs. What do your actions in the realm of stewardship
say about what you believe?
BAPTISM: (10:45)

SWD Missions Prayer for Week of November 9 – In this week of
remembering our veterans who fought to keep our country free, pray also
that our chaplains will be effective in helping prisoners and ex-offenders to
find true freedom in their Savior, Jesus Christ. Ask for His blessings on
Pastors Afam Ikanih, and on Lay Worker Patrick Batom, and all who serve our
District in our Free at Last ministry.
Amos 5:18–24
Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Why would you have the
day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light, as if a man fled from a
lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand
against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the LORD
darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? “I hate, I
despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I
will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened
animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of
your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let
justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing
stream.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who
are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through
Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this
we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive,
who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who
have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven
with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the
sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with
them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always
be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Matthew 25:1–13
“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their
lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish,
and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took
no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As
the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But
at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to
meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And
the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps
are going out.’ 9But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not
be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for
yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came,
and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast,
and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying,
‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not
know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the
hour.
Notes on Today’s Divine Service
Treasures from the Church: We should learn to bring our eyes, our hearts, and
souls to bear upon yonder life in heaven and in a lively hope await it with joy.
For if we would be Christians, the ultimate objects of our quest should not be
marrying, giving in marriage, buying, selling, planting, building – activities that
Christ says the wicked will be engaged in especially before the Last Day. To be
sure, we, too, must use these things in order to satisfy the needs of the body.
But our ultimate quest should be something better and higher: the blessed
inheritance in heaven that does not pass away. Martin Luther, Sermon on Titus
2:13, 1531, St. Louis Edition 9:934, What Luther Says, 619
Today’s Reading: The Day of the Lord is “darkness, and not light” (Amos 5:18,
20) for all who trust in their own righteousness and piety. The Lord will not
accept their “burnt offerings and grain offerings,” nor will He look upon their
“peace offerings” (Amos 5:22). Instead, He desires a heart of faith that trusts in
Him, which lets “justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream” (Amos 5:24) in love for the neighbor. In order for the “lamps” of
our lives to burn brightly with such love, we must be filled with the “oil” of
forgiveness through faith in our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ (Matt. 25:1–4).
Therefore, as we await His coming, wisdom directs us “to the dealers” (Matt.
25:9), that is, to the ministers of His Gospel. Thus we wait upon the Lord, and we
“encourage one another with these words” (1 Thess. 4:18). Waking or sleeping, we
are prepared to meet Him when He comes “with a cry of command, with the voice
of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God,” and “we will always
be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:16, 17).
The Church’s Liturgy and Music: “'I don’t understand everything that is
happening!' Visitors sometimes say this the first time they attend the service.
Please do not feel bad. We all grow into the Lord’s service. The first hour you
went to a new job, you didn’t understand everything about the job. The first
hour you visited a foreign country, you didn’t know all the language and
customs. The Liturgy is the Lord’s language and the joy of God’s people. We are
all growing into His service. The Liturgy contains the special language and
customs of those who are in Christ’s Kingdom. But this is not a foreign country.
It is truly your home country. When we enter the church, we are returning to our
Heavenly Father’s land. We learn to worship by worshipping. It will take more
than a lifetime to learn it all. That’s why God’s people are at His altar every
week.” Lutheran Forum, Pentecost 2007
Sermon Application: Are you ready to face eternity? When your Lord comes, he
will not ask you what you did for a living. When the Bridegroom comes, he will
not ask to see a W-2 or a savings deposit register. When the angels announce the
coming of Christ, they will not tell us to pack our favorite things into a carry on
bag. The Lord will not ask about our golf handicap or if you were on a winning
sports team. He will not ask how popular you were, how busy you were, or how
good you were. There is only ONE issue - and one alone - that will count when
the groom comes: Do you believe that the Heavenly Bridegroom is your Savior
from sin, death and hell. How important is the Lord Jesus in your life and your
child’s life? Are you ready? Keep your eyes on Jesus! He gave you life and He
sustains your life. He comes to bring you life, salvation and joy!
