Nanomaterial-based Sensors for High Performance
Cancer Diagnostics

Nanotechnology has enabled an intensive impact on the advancement of diagnostic
sensors and medical devices. Control synthesis and assembly of nanostructures has
become a critical aspect for high performance sensor development. This talk will capture
an overview of nanomaterial synthesis techniques and nano-biointegration via surface
functionalization. Also included is how nanomaterial design affects sensing performance.
Example of the electrochemical immunosensing system based on specific detection of
cancer biomarkers will be particularly discussed. Probing biomarkers secreted at the onset
of cancer development is expected to guarantee an early diagnosis. According to our
recent progress on the development of cervical cancer diagnostics device, the correlative
study of the conventional Pap test (golden standard) and the proposed detection system
indicates potential use of the system in the clinical setting. Finally, our effort to transform
the lab prototype to commercially acceptable platform with automate testing procedure will
be reviewed.
