Visibility seemed to be the biggest complaint for most shooters as scores were abnormally low. High scores of 48 were posted by Ray Sherbinski and Mike Campbell with Mike also capturing the Stein trophy. Jennifer Abbott won the Hayes trophy. Dave bills one $47.50 in the 50-50 raffle and Andy Nolan won the Beikirch gift certificate. Congratulations to all! Anyone wishing to compete in the league must do so at one of the next two shoots. Team Ontario had some good scores lead by DOUG TRUMPOWSKY, posting the team-high of a 46. DAVE MUELLER and DON STEADERMAN were the next with each posting 45s. JEFF HEATER Posted a 44 while JOE CARDILLO completed team scoring logging a 41, giving Team Ontario 221 targets and five league points for the event. Accumulated club standings at this point found Team Ontario and the team from Outlet tied with eight points and tied for eighth place. The third event of the season found the league at the traps of the HolField Rod & Gun Club on October 18th and 19th. The threats of rain for Saturday and cold winds for Sunday didn’t scare anyone away as half of our members shot each day. There was a lone 49 for the weekend while six shooters posted 48s. Dave Stratton collected the Bonbright trophy posting a 46. Scott Long collected $43.50 from the 50/50 while Rob Dahlen won the Beikirch gift certificate. Team Ontario had some decent scores lead by DOUG TRUMPOWSKY, posting the team-high of a 48. JEFF HEATER followed posting a 47. DON STEADERMAN and BILL PALERMO were next with each posting 44s. DAVE MUELLER (along with Tom Logue, and Kurt Larson) completed team scoring logging a 42, giving Team Ontario 225 targets and another five league points for the event. Accumulated club standings at this point found Team Ontario alone in solid 8 place with 13 points. See Bill Palermo for more information. WORK DAY A workday is scheduled for November 1st. Fall cleanup will be the concentrated effort for our workdays. Club workdays are an excellent time to be able to put in your 8 hours of volunteer activity for the club and receive your work certificate. As they say, many hands make light work, the more members we have working on projects will make the jobs finish more quickly. Consider coming out to our workdays that start at about 9 AM and will run until about 3 PM (or later). This is your club! Don't you think it's about time that you put in a little bit of sweat for the betterment of the club? CLUB HOUSE PAINTING On September 27th eleven members of the club put on their painting clothes and pitched in to freshen up the exterior of the Trimble Road club House. Work began at about 9AM with spray gun, rollers and brushes laying on the white paint. Several obstacles were overcome with the job almost complete. Just a small area on the west side of the building needs to be completed. Many thanks goes out to Gary & Robin Partridge; “spray man”-Lee McMullen; Rich Haywood; Tim Green; Bill Dorofy; Don and Carol Steaderman; Jim Ladelfa; Bill Verhagen; and Bill Palermo. Lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers was served to the hungry crew. The building looks GREAT! Thanks to all who took the time to make this a great club! Besides nothing has ever happened.” Those words still ring in my head. And how many times have you seen someone on the news talking about something bad that happened in their neighborhood and you hear this spoken, “ But nothing like that has ever happened here before. This is such a nice quiet neighborhood.” This is a true story so let me tell you the rest of the story. We were visiting family in PA for Thanksgiving and my daughter had just finished several grad school tests and she wasn’t packed to leave when we arrived at 11PM. She asked if I minded staying over night with her, and that Dad could pick us up in the morning. I agreed, and around 12:30AM is when we had that conversation about checking the windows. So after that she locked the dead bolt and we went to sleep. At 2:30AM, I heard two men talking downstairs in the house, and I elbowed my daughter and whispered, “Get on the phone and call 911 right now.” She was still groggy and asked me why? My response was, “ Cause two men are in the house and they are coming up the stairs… get on the phone and call 911 NOW.“ Not to bore you with all the details, my daughter and I are ok, but that really scared us. It took the police over 25 minutes to get to the house and they told me we were fortunate, cause it could have taken 45 minutes or longer. Police are rarely there in time to stop a crime, they often make it there after the fact, to do paperwork or to put up the “do not cross… crime scene tape”. So how many of you women think it will never happen to you? If you think that way, now is time to stop thinking that way and instead think of this: what will you do if something bad does happen? Will you be a victim or the victor? Ladies, this is why I learned how to shoot. Granted I really didn’t want to do it, not at all. Guns scared me, and that is the truth. But recently on August 23rd, the Ontario Rod and Gun had their 3 Gun competition and I, at 60 years of age took part in it. While I was not trying to compete against the men, I did a great job with the shooting part. And why 3 gun? Because if the bad guy comes into my home I want to know I can handle a shotgun, or a rifle, and finally the pistol, so that no matter where I am, I feel better prepared to defend myself or my family if need be. And guns are NOT for everyone. If you think that you could not shoot someone even if they were going to harm or kill The Scatter Sheet you, then you shouldn’t have one. But what about if you could have saved, your spouse, or your child by learning how to defend yourself? Would that make you think twice? My daughter and husband applied for their permit first, and when I went with them to watch them shoot, just seeing them made me decide that I should also know how to shoot as well. So I applied for my carry permit and then took NRA basic training. Now that did NOT prepare me for much. So then I took a defensive class, and I felt better about that too but still not super comfortable because after learning some skills all I could do was put up a target and shoot, which I didn’t find all that exciting or all that realistic. I have also taken two courses with the Project Appleseed. Both were two day classes in PA, in order to learn to shoot a rifle, and that was amazing. And I had a friend teach me how to shoot a shotgun, and tried my hand at skeet and even though I am really not very good at that I still had lots of fun. But then we heard about the fun events that Ontario Rod and Gun has to offer, so we joined and I have been having a blast. I have been doing the Tuesday night steel shoots. I have been competing with rifle competitions. And I have taken part and tried the shotgun too, which made me want to try the 3 gun. And I will say that it was a ton of fun and I got a lot of experience taking part in the competition. Learning not just how to move and shoot but how to reload too. So why do I do this? Because that night when we were sitting in the dark in her bedroom I realized I couldn’t defend my daughter or myself. While she was on the phone with 911, I asked her, “Do you have a knife?’ She replied, “NO!” My response was, “ Well you should.” Her response was, “Sorry.” A minute later she handed me a butter knife. I looked at it and said, “ What am I supposed to do with this, butter them to death?” And I never want to feel that vulnerable again. God helped us that night. The two men fled the house before the police got there. They weren’t there to hurt us, but were simply robbing houses that weren’t occupied because everyone went home for Thanksgiving. But it could have been much worse. So the more I shoot, even though I am not in a class, I am getting better and better. That is why. And it is so much better than just shooting at a target because it is closer to real life scenarios, and I am learning how to shoot on the move. Now all the men are faster in the competitions, but so what? I don’t come to compare myself to the guys. I come to learn and to get faster and more accurate, and by golly that is happening. You can ask the fellas who whoops and hollers out there when I have completed the course. And I do a little jig too… But I have also asked, “Where are your wives fellas?” Ladies, you are at higher risk to become a victim, and in comparison to a man you are at a much bigger disadvantage than your husband is because we are not as strong or as large as a guy. So ladies, there is really no excuse for you NOT to come and learn to shoot. And remember this, the life you could be saving might be yours, your husband, your children or your grandchildren. I hope to see more of you in the near future. Page 5 NOVEMBER 2014 The Scatter Sheet The ONTARIO ROD AND GUN CLUB Inc. 2523 Trimble Road, P.O.
