St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Farmington Hills, Michigan 248-474-0675 www.stpaulsfarmington.com The Mission of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world at large while equipping His servants through Word and Sacrament. Celebrating 120 Years of Ministry REFORMATION Saturday, November 1, 2014 & Sunday, November 2, 2014 Welcome! We are happy to have you with us today. If you are a guest, please introduce yourself and ask an usher for a Welcome Packet. We welcome children and encourage you to worship together as a family often. Families with small children might want to consider sitting in the front pews to better enable their children to see and participate in the worship service. "Busy Bags" that contain quiet activities for restless children are located at the rear of the church and you are welcome to borrow one if needed. If your child needs a diaper change, to be fed or comforted during worship, please ask an usher to direct you to the infant area just beyond the narthex. A Word from Pastor “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus knew God, Jesus was, and is, God. God can never do something false and is incapable of deceit. What God says simply is. That means what He says is always the truth. In Jesus prayer in the 17th chapter of the Gospel of John He states this quite clearly. He says, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” It was this standard that set the tone for Reformation in the Church. There were those who carried the call for reformation too far, swerving once again themselves from God’s true word, as they followed an emotional path. A quick computer search within the Gospel according to John reveals that Jesus talked about truth 21 times in that Gospel. Not once did He say that our salvation depends on our feelings. True reformation is about truth. That is why the cry of the reformers was “Sola Scriptura,” Scripture alone. It is in His revealed Word that God shows us what is true. It is in His Law God shows us that we are truly sinners. It is in His Gospel that God shows us that we are truly redeemed by Jesus perfect life and sacrificial death. In this truth we are free indeed. 1 Services on Saturday and Sunday will follow Divine Service Setting Five beginning on p. 213 in the Lutheran Service Book, with Confession and Absolution. For great is God, the Lord, Most worthy of all praise; He made the heavens and the earth; Fear Him and give Him praise! (musical interlude) Choir: Let now the heav’ns rejoice; Let earth give glad refrain The word established shall not move, For God in heaven reigns! 2 Now let the sea resound, Be jubilant all fields The forest tree will sing for joy; Earth’s judge is now revealed. Sing praise to Him, now sing; His glory now proclaim. Rejoice, all you who seek the Lord; Come, glory in His Name! Welcome/Peace of the Lord Opening Hymn “Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness” LSB 849 Confession and Absolution (p.213) Introit (spoken) I will speak of your testimonies before kings, [O Lord,] and shall not be put to shame. I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. 3 All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. I will speak of your testimonies before kings, [O Lord,] and shall not be put to shame. Kyrie (sung – LSB p. 198) Pastor: In peace let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. People: Amen. Gloria Patri "Glory Be to God the Father” LSB 506 Collect of the Day Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. 4 First Reading Revelation 14:6–7 6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Gradual (spoken responsively) Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. Epistle Reading Romans 3:19–28 19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 5 Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Hymn of the Day “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” LSB 656 Holy Gospel John 8:31–36 Leader: The Holy Gospel according to John, the eighth chapter. Congregation: Glory to You, O Lord. 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. Creedal Hymn (Saturday) "We All Believe in One True God" LSB 953 Creedal Hymn (Sunday) All: In God, the Father, we believe, From Him all blessings we receive; For all our wants He does provide, In time of need He’s at our side Choir: In Jesus Christ we do believe; He died that we in Him might live. From death’s dark grave He rose again True Son of God and Son of Man. 6 All: The Holy Spirit, we believe, Our hearts true hope and peace He gives; The Christian’s heart to sanctify, The Triune God to glorify. Choir: In God the Father, God the Son, The Holy Spirit, Three in One, We all believe and we confess. May God our faith forever bless. Children's Message Sermon Prayer of the Church P Friends in Christ, I urge you all to lift up your hearts to God and pray with me as Christ our Lord has taught us and freely promised to hear us. C P C P C God, our Father in heaven, look with mercy on us, Your needy children on earth, and grant us grace that Your holy name be hallowed by us and all the world through the pure and true teaching of Your Word and the fervent love shown forth in our lives. Graciously turn from us all false doctrine and evil living whereby Your precious name is blasphemed and profaned. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. May Your kingdom come to us and expand. Bring all transgressors and those who are blinded and bound in the devil’s kingdom to know Jesus Christ, Your Son, by faith that the number of Christians may be increased. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Strengthen us by Your Spirit according to Your will, both in life and in death, in the midst of both good and evil things, that our own wills may be crucified daily and sacrificed to Your good and gracious will. Into Your merciful hands we commend [name(s)] and all who are in need, praying for them at all times: Thy will be done. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. 7 P Grant us our daily bread, preserve us from greed and selfish cares, and help us trust in You to provide for all our needs. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Forgive us our sins as we also forgive those who sin against us so that our hearts may be at peace and may rejoice in a good conscience before You, and that no sin may ever frighten or alarm us. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Lead us not into temptation, O Lord, but help us by Your Spirit to subdue our flesh, to turn from the world and its ways, and to overcome the devil with all his wiles. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P And lastly, O heavenly Father, deliver us from all evil of both body and soul, now and forever. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P We trust, O Lord, in Your great mercy to hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. Offering Matthew 5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” This is one of many Bible passages that remind us that we reap what we sow. Likewise, what God puts into us (His own love, mercy, kindness, and generosity) – flows back out of us. For it all starts with His self-giving! Offering Hymn (Sunday) “Voices Raised to You We Offer” All: Voices raised to You we offer; Tune them, God, for songs of praise. Hearts and hands we bring in tribute For Your gifts through all our days. Alleluia! Alleluia! Triune God, to You we sing! Choir: All creation joins to praise You; Earth and sky Your works display. Art and music, gifts You lend us, We return to You today. Alleluia! Alleluia! God, Creator, source of life! 8 Choir: Christ, the song of Love incarnate, Touching earth with heaven’s grace, For Your living, suff’ring, dying, For Your rising, hear our praise! Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ, Redeemer, Lord of life! Cantor: Spirit, flaming through creation, Kindle faith within each heart. Lift our voice high in chorus; Through our hands Your love impart. Alleluia! Alleluia! Spirit, Helper, breath of life! All: How can any praise we offer Measure all the thanks we owe? Take our hearts and hands and voices Gifts of love we can bestow. Alleluia! Alleluia! Triune God, to You we sing! Since the days of the Apostles the churches Communion practice has remained constant. It follows I Corinthians 10 and 11, where the Apostle Paul warns the Church to know the true Body and Blood of Christ is in and with the Bread and Wine. St. Paul warns, “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” Since we want no one harmed by the strong body and blood of Jesus, we ask if you have not been instructed and received into membership in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, please talk to our Pastor or elder before communing.* We do not ask this out of a spirit of superiority, or in order to be mean, but out of care and concern for our brothers and sisters.* Elders will be at the rear of the church and wearing an "Elder" badge. (Children not yet confirmed in the Lutheran faith may also come to the Lord’s table, and receive a blessing.) For those who choose, non-alcoholic wine is in the center of the tray with individual cups. 9 Service of the Sacrament Preface (p. 216) Lord's Prayer (p. 217) Words of Our Lord (p. 217) Sanctus "Holy, Holy, Holy” LSB 507 Peace of the Lord (p. 217) Agnus Dei "O Christ, Thou Lamb of God" (sung - LSB p. 198) O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Grace and knowledge are gifts of God to the believer through His Word. The Word is God’s food to make us spiritually strong as we serve Him by serving others. We grow only as we are filled with God’s grace and the knowledge of Jesus. This is the source of our power to get God’s work done. The way God gives His rich grace is through the Word and worship in which we hear Him speaking to us. SEE A SHOW AND SUPPORT A CAUSE! Lutheran High School Westland presents The Magician’s Nephew and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a show for the whole family. These two adaptations of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia will be performed on Friday, November 7th and Saturday, November 8th at 7:00. In addition to the performance, the Thespian Troupe is collecting coats for One Warm Coat. Bring in a coat, new or used, and we will donate it after it appears on our stage. Drop the coats off in the school office or bring them prior to the performance; our goal is to have the largest wardrobe possible! Let’s see how big we can make it, and, more importantly, how many people we can keep warm this winter. Tickets are $5. Children not yet in elementary school are free. LHWL students are free.
