Many people are familiar
with the name of the prophet
Enoch and have read the apocryphal books that bear his name.
Enoch is mentioned briefly in the
Bible, and an Internet posting by
Jack Zavada summarizes what the
Bible says about him.
The
aforementioned
apocryphal Book of Enoch, in contrast to the brief history given in
the Bible, provides an impressive
wealth of information on the
prophet’s life and his experiences
with God and the angels. At one
point, Enoch ascended into
heaven and was taken on a tour
by an angel guide. Another story
recounts how Enoch was asked by
the fallen angels to make intercession for them with God so that they
might return to heaven. God denies their petition, but nevertheless blesses Enoch for his efforts.
“Enoch holds a rare distinction in the Bible,” Zavada
writes. “He did not die. Instead,
God ‘took him away.’ We find his
story in Genesis 5, in a long list of
the descendants of Adam. Only a
short sentence, ‘Enoch walked
faithfully with God,’ in Genesis
5:22 and repeated in Genesis 5:24
reveals why he was so special to
his Creator.”

book was outlawed and removed
from the Bible. Consequently, the
text was entirely lost in the West
until its rediscovery in Ethiopia in
the 17th century. It is available in

John Dee, The Father Of
Enochian Magick
John Dee is, without question, the father of Enochian
Magick. But just who was he?
“Not only could that fill
books,” said Enochian magick
practitioner and author Aaron
Leitch, “that HAS filled books.
Dee was a very well-renowned
scholar, inventor and scientist. He
befriended Elizabeth before she
was queen. Now, this is Elizabeth
I, in the late 1500s. Dee was literally known as ‘The Man Who
Knew Everything.’ All human
knowledge, at that point in history, he had it in his head. His
house also doubled as a lab, and
scientists and researchers were
constantly coming there to run experiments.”
Dee reached a point
where he felt he had studied everything that the human race had
to offer and that for further knowledge he must turn to God and His
angels. He wrote in his journals
that if Enoch, Ezekiel and Daniel
and all the other prophets of old
had gotten their wisdom directly
from angelic sources, why
couldn’t he do the same? So he
began to explore occultism, specifically what is called the
Solomonic system. He began to
read medieval Christian magickal
texts such as “The Keys of
Solomon,” books that instructed
the practitioner on how to call
down angels and command demons.
“The only problem with
this was that he was not a clairvoyant,” Leitch explained. “He could
not actually see and hear angels.
So he set out to find a scryer, and
he tried a couple of people that
didn’t quite work out. Then he was
introduced to Edward Kelley, a
budding alchemist who had really
just developed an interest in the
subject. We suspect that Kelley
jumped at the chance to meet and
work with John Dee, a famous alchemist.”
Kelley sat down at the
scrying stone and immediately
the visions came.
“It was like a curtain
opened and he could see and
hear them like they were standing in the room,” Leitch enthused.
“His skill impressed Dee enough
that he hired him on the spot, and
for the next several years the two
worked together pretty much every day for several hours a day,
calling down angels and recording in the journal what Kelley was
seeing in the crystal stone and
what the angels would tell him.”
Catholic Church many hundreds
of years prior to Dee’s work. Dee
himself did not own a copy and
had never seen a copy of the
book.
“But the legend of Enoch’s
journey into the heavens had remained,” Leitch said, “even
though the book itself was gone.
So Dee was aware of the legend,
and in his journals, when he made
contact with the angels, one of the
very first things he asked for was
the Book of Enoch. The angels told
him, ‘Yes, we’ll bring you that
book.’ The next time he called the
angels, they brought a book, but
it was not the lost Biblical book he
had been looking for. What they
brought was supposedly the book
that Enoch had written when he
copied the text out of the Tablets
of Destiny in heaven. And they
said, ‘This is the book. This is the
celestial book that Enoch copied.’
“That book that they
showed Dee became the absolute
center-pin of his entire angelic
mystical system. Basically, Dee
was being told by his angelic contacts that they were redelivering
information to him that they had
first given to Enoch but that had
been lost in the Flood when all of
the monsters and giants were
wiped out because of what the
Watchers had done.”

Dee’s Initial Contact
With Angels
Remember that, at this
point in history, the apocryphal
Book of Enoch was entirely lost in
the Western world due to its exclusion from the Bible by the early
(Leitch points out in a
separate online article that Dee
himself never called his system
“Enochian Magick.” Later historians gave it that name due to this
relationship to the Biblical
prophet Enoch that Leitch has
been explaining here).
Why Do Modern People
Continue To Work With
Dee’s System?
The above question is not
easy to answer, and Leitch replied
that he could only speak for himself.
“When you come into occultism as a novice,” he said,
“there are certain things that
you’re about that people just consider horrifically dangerous,
powerful things that humans
probably shouldn’t trifle with. As
a hotheaded young kid, those are,
of course, the things that I just had
to seek out and play with. So I
wanted to try these methods for
calling down these massive archangels that could fry your brain
out with a thought. No one could
tell me what the hell those guys
were, only that they were extremely powerful. Once I got into
it, it was like a calling. It just called
to me and spoke to me and I’ve
just been very wedded to the
material ever since.
“But I really suspect that
the main draw from the Enochian
system is its mystery,” he continued. “It’s that no one can be really sure. Up until very recently in
history, the whole Enochian system was obscure. Until the 1990s,
no one had even gone into Dee’s
journals and literally picked them
apart page by page. No one had
compared his magick to other
systems. No one had really explored it. So there’s this big mystery. What is this? What are these
entities? Who are they? Why does
this system exist? What are all
these encrypted tablets? If I get
into this, and can decrypt it and
decipher it, is it going to mean
something?
“So I think that’s what pulls
people in, and it can lead you on
a merry chase for years and years
of your life. And you can come out
not really being sure you understand much more than what you
started from.”
Leitch cautioned that it
would be wrong to call Enochian
magick merely and only another
angel summoning system, but
that is technically what it is at its
most basic level – a very powerful and effective form of angel
communication.
For Leitch, the fact that
Enochian magick actually works
keeps him fascinated.
“The angels respond to
their language,” he said, “and
they respond to the magick. You
know, I’m an ‘angel worker,’ so
there’s no reason in the world that
I wouldn’t want to explore something like that.”
Allen Greenfield, Aleister
Crowley And Alien
Occultism
Allen Greenfield holds the
title of bishop in the Gnostic
Church. He has a long history of
active – and contentious – membership in many occult organizations, including the Ordo Templi
Orientis, established by Aleister
Crowley. Along with his esoteric
pursuits, Greenfield has also studied the UFO phenomenon for
many decades.
Greenfield is the author of
“Secret
Cipher
of
the
UFOnauts,” a provocative
magickal text for the modern age
that has come to be regarded as
a classic in the field of paranormal
literature and one which might be
considered to have a particularly
hip cachet. It was at one time a
rare and difficult book to track
down, but we have included it, in
full, at the end of “Angel Spells –
The Enochian Occult Workbook
of Charms, Seals, Talismans and
Ciphers.”
“Secret Cipher of the
UFOnauts” contains Greenfield’s
theory that much of the UFO phenomenon can be “decoded” by
using a method that draws on the
Kabbalah, especially the numerology aspects of its Jewish mysticism, as well as other similar ancient systems. Greenfield believes the UFO occupants are an
eternal race that has always
reached out to certain human adepts by using hidden, obscure linguistic and mathematical symbolism.
Greenfield’s method also
relies on elements taught by
Aleister Crowley. Greenfield, like
many others, vehemently denies
that Crowley was a Satanist, black
magician or sexual pervert. He
quotes one of Crowley’s biographers as saying that Crowley was
a man “intoxicated” with God.
Chapter Two of “Secret
Cipher of the UFOnauts” opens
with a portion of a letter Crowley
wrote to one of his students in
California in 1944, near the end of
Crowley’s life.
“My observation of the
Universe,” Crowley wrote, “convinces me that there are beings of
intelligence and power of a far
higher quality than anything we
can conceive of as human . . . the
one and only chance for mankind
to advance as a whole is for individuals to make contact with such
beings.”

Crowley’s Enochian
Contact
While on vacation with his
wife in Cairo in April 1904,
Crowley received a surprising response to his many years of practicing Enochian magick: the appearance of “Aiwass,” or “Aiwaz,”
a being Crowley regarded as a
super-human intelligence. The
being then dictated to Crowley
what became “The Book of the
Law,” or “Liber AL vel Legis.”
“Although primarily associated with the Law of the New
Aeon or Age of Aquarius,”
Greenfield writes, “‘The Book of
the Law’ predicts and contains
the complete cipher of the
UFOnauts. As far as is known, although not fully decoded until the
1970s even in the classical form,
this cipher seems to have been in
use among the UFOnauts themselves for some time prior to the
appearance of Aiwass.”
Was this UFOnaut cipher
the same as the Enochian language the angels taught to John
Dee? Or something similar to the
Adamic Language, also called the
Language of Eden, sought by
many medieval Jewish and Christian mystics and scholars? There
is an obvious repeated pattern
here. A mere mortal seeks contact
with the angels and is told he must
first learn certain protocols and
methods of communication that
require the ability to speak to
these higher beings in their own
language.
Perhaps this accounts for
why most abductees recall very
little actually being spoken to
them – telepathically or otherwise
– by the alien abductors. The literature on the subject reveals
time and again that the aliens often remain stonily silent when
abductees ask them questions
about the procedures being performed on them or what the overall purpose of the abduction program really is. This refusal to inform abductees of the aliens’ intent is a primary reason the phenomenon remains so mysterious.
The late abduction research pioneer, Budd Hopkins, once said
that we are not dealing with an
intelligence we can call into the
room and interview.
Is the problem that we are
simply not speaking to the aliens
in their own language? Did John
Dee and Aleister Crowley take
the right approach when they began to compile what they felt was
a directly revealed method of
speaking to their angels in words
the angels could respect?
Greenfield’s book also includes the drawing Crowley
made of Aiwass, and the
creature’s resemblance to a gray
alien is immediate and unmistak-
able. Given that Aiwass showed
up after Crowley had practiced
for many years with his version of
the Enochian system for “summoning angels,” one is hardpressed not to draw the conclusion that John Dee was most likely
working with these same beings
and that overcoming the language barrier was a vital part of
the process.
Greenfield writes that
Crowley “wrestled all his adult
life with the nature of the Higher
Beings he contacted,” including
Aiwass. Crowley died in poverty
in 1947. Under his deathbed was
found a considerable sum of
money belonging to the Ordo
Templi Orientis, which Crowley
had declined to spend, even on
medicines that might have saved
his life. Little understood, even by
many of his followers, his death in
the same year that the UFO phenomenon came to public attention
seems more than coincidental, according to Greenfield.

Amazingly enough, J. W. from Jupiter admits that not everyone will be able to adjust to the new rays or vibrations raining down upon us and that, “(some) will find as these vibrations increase, their complete physical makeup and mental
or spiritual bodies will be out of tune.”
Unfortunately for the channel, she may have been one of
these individuals J.W. is referring to for Gloria Lee died under
the most tragic of circumstances. In an update by Regan Lee,
the well known UFO blogger confirmed that the stewardess
turned contactee died in a hotel room in Washington D.C. when
she went on a 66 day fast because the authorities refused to
participate in a dialogue which might, Gloria felt, bring about
total peace on earth. Did “they” lead her astray and cause
Gloria’s death, or did she act illresponsibly on her own? It’s a
controversy that lasts to this day.
DIANE—SHE CAME FROM VENUS
On the other hand, Dana Howard’s contacts seemed to be
highly evolved. In fact, the author of the exceedingly hard to
find first edition of Diane—She Came From Venus speaks of
her alien friends with high reverence as if they might be God’s
angels: “All over the world an auspicious new day is dawning.
A triumphant spiritual victory is soon to be won. Many earthlings will live to see it emblazoned across the morning skies
commingled with the dazzling radiance of the sunrise. With
trumpets and fanfare the New Age will be ushered in. When
that wonderful day arrives those from ON HIGH will descend
earthward. They will help to release all the human family to a
new octave in living. ‘And He shall send His angels with a great
sound of the trumpet, and they shall gather together. His elect
from the four winds. . .’(Matt. 24: 31.)”
Unlike the odd looking humanoids and grey aliens of today, the saucer pilots of the contactee era were so human in
appearance that it is said they could easily blend in with your
average American, walking down the streets of Any Town,
USA totally undetected. They were mostly Caucasian looking,
had long, wavy, blond hair with piercing blue or green eyes.
Most of the contactees were male, but as researcher/
blogger Regan Lee points out in her postings at
orangeorb.blogspot.com/, Dane Howard was an exception.
Her story was perhaps a bit more romantic, a bit more New
Age, with its talk of cosmic love from the stars, and its visions
of a Martian-like space being who materialized before her as
early as 1939. In her part of this historic tome, Dana discusses
her transformation from a “normal person,” to one consumed
by universal laws, teleportation, space travel, and things most
women of the era would not have had an understanding of or
liking for. I would dare say Dana Howard was the Shirley
MacLaine of her time!
As an example of her prose, Dana expresses her feelings
about her trip to our sister planet, either as an astral or physical experience we can only deliberate: “During flight we
seemed to penetrate many dimensions of abstract space.
There was no static. No interference. Then something happened. It was a gentle explosion of colors accompanied by an
experience akin to an orgasm of spirit and matter. There was
no time after that. No space in the usual connotation of space.
All was consciousness. Absolute consciousness.” Dana expressed a degree of confusion about what had transpired when
she stated, “Many times since that memorable date I have tried
to arrive at some logical conclusion as to what actually happened. Did I leave my body behind, traveling only in a finer
vehicle? Or was it true teleportation and I took my body with
me? Did the atoms of my body actually disintegrate at one
point, rematerialize in another?”
Dana Howard’s words are pure poetry. I sure wish someone had a copy they could send us of one of her lectures from
say Giant Rock where she spoke in the desert many times.
Not much is known about Dana’s private life though we are in
touch with Dana’s niece who says that even though others in
the family might have thought she was a bit weird, she always
thought her aunt was very creative and ahead of her time. She
notes that Dana established several contacts in the movie industry and assisted on scripts and in other capacities.

Nowhere on the face of the earth
is one’s aloneness more acutely felt
than on the desert in winter where
monochrome vistas extend to infinity in every direction, broken only
by the awful expanse of endless
sky, where not even the scar of a
contrail appears; a maddeningly
perfect, inverted, blue-grey ceramic bowl, issuing neither sign nor
portent, promising nothing, revealing nothing to the sensibilities of
humankind. It is a sky so vast, so
empty and terrible that, at night,
huddled against the darkness, one
can actually feel the trembling energy of the cosmos as a weight upon
one’s shoulders, as if the void suddenly becomes a separate and
single entity with true substance,
the measurable and calculable
electric blue fire of the gnostics,
bearing down upon the earth, driving us into the sand like nails into
soft wood, reminding us of our vulnerability.
I love the desert sky on winter
nights, and over the years have

Orion, the mighty Hunter, chases
the Seven Sisters of the shimmering
Pleiades across the night, a timeless
procession of human behavior inscribed large upon the firmament,
enclosed by the majestic Medicine
Wheel, beginning at Sirius and
arching as a Paisley arabesque
northward to Capella; the great
hand of a caring chaperone
shepherding celestial lovers.
I was there, on the low desert,
staring into the cold sky that night
because I had received a letter
from my mother informing me that
a friend, Two Crows Woman, whom
I had met briefly some years ear-
lier would be spending the
winter near Blythe, California. The letter included a
small photograph of a
pickup truck with a large
camper strapped to the bed.
Truth to tell, I was
amazed that I was actually
able to find her. I drove from
San Diego to Blythe in a few
hours, turned onto the right
highway the first time and
turned off the highway onto
one of hundreds of trails that
meandered out into the
desert. Within a minute, I
had driven directly to her
campsite. If you have ever
been to the desert and tried
to find someone among the
thousands of campsites, the
hundreds of unmarked
trails, you’ll understand how unusual it was that I had found her so
quickly. I’m not a soothsayer, but I
perceived something portentous,
almost magically preordained, in
that. Something momentous was
happening—involving all the time
of recorded history—right before
my eyes.
It was Thanksgiving day, 1985.
I had brought food to prepare and,
after getting my motorhome set up,
I began. Hours later, we sat in the
cold evening near our fire and chatted.
“If I died tomorrow,” Two
Crows Woman said softly, “it
wouldn’t matter because I am
where I want to be.” She waved a
hand vaguely behind her at the sky
and desert, looked up at the billion
burning suns spinning imperceptibly in the endless void. “This place
is as near unchanging as any place
on earth.”
The flames from the campfire
cast great shadows across the
space between us, making her appear smaller than she actually was.
She clasped her fingers around her
knees and rocked gently on her
driftwood log.
“Just become a part of the wind
and sky and sand.”
Ours was the only campfire on
the desert that night, that Thanksgiving evening, as we huddled
against the desert chill, watching
the dancing flames of time, seeing
familiar and happy faces in the fire.
Only the dim blue glow of electric
entertainment issued from the windows of the nearby trailers as all
those within sight and hearing
settled down to let invisible radio
emissions control their lives for five
or six hours.
She told me about the people
who talk of escaping the chaos of
civilization, who brag about fleeing
the ant hill existence of the cities,
but who smuggle all civilization’s
turmoil and terror into their camps
in the shape of a television set, as if
doing so made them somehow less
human.
She spoke, in an abstract way,
about her aloneness. Not loneliness, mind you, but aloneness, as if
they were two absolutely different
things, unconnected in any way,
one to the other, and she wondered
aloud what would become of her
dogs when she died.
She told me about the old
women looking for men, and the old
men looking for nothing more than
peace and quiet, and that reminded
her of one of her gentleman friends
who came by once in awhile who
could only talk about the motorcycles he used to have, about the
patches he has sewn onto his
ragged leather jacket, about days
gone by that he can only remember in bits and snatches.
“When you get so old you’re not
good for anything anymore, you
live on past accomplishments,” she
said. “You dig up things from your
past and brag about them, if they’re
worth bragging about, because
that’s all you are anymore: past accomplishments that no one cares
about.”
I poked at the fire with a twisted,
bleached mesquite stick and pulled
my collar up against the cold night.
“When are you going to give up this
endless moving from place to
place?” I asked.
“When some mortician plants
me or throws my useless carcass
into the fiery furnace.”
“But I’d think you would get
tired of never having a place, a
home, never having roots.”
“No,” she replied softly. “It’s the
opposite, really. I don’t do well in
civilization, can’t stand the walls
and the footsteps.
“After I left here last year I went
to Sweet Home, Idaho, because a
lady friend offered to rent me a
place there for a hundred dollars a
month. I gave her a one hundred
dollar bill, parked the rig, and took
a handful of my stuff into the house.
It was a pretty house, nice and
clean. I thought about cooking, but
I didn’t want to dirty the oven just
to make one meal, because I didn’t
want to have to clean it up.

jumping with joy at the prospect of
going on the road again.
“I didn’t put any of my stuff in
the cabinets because they were so
clean and, anyway, I didn’t have
enough to fill them up, so I left most
of my stuff out in the camper.”
So she went into the house,
gathered up what precious little she
had taken in the first day, packed
the camper, and drove to her
friend’s house.
She slept in the bed the first
night, but it was so big and empty
that it made her feel small and
lonely. The second night she slept
on the couch, but her dogs wanted
to get on it with her and they kept
her awake all night. The third night
she slept on the floor.
“Do you think,” she had asked
the lady, “if I decide not to stay you
can rent the place?”
“All day long,” she said, “I
walked in circles, from the kitchen
into the dining room, into the living
room, through the bedroom, into
the bathroom, and back to the
kitchen, walking in circles, walking
around and around, glancing out
the windows at the camper parked
in the yard as I passed, walking and
looking, looking and walking, and
all the way around and back the
dogs followed.
“Sometimes I’d walk out of the
kitchen and see one of the dogs following another one of the dogs into
the living room, following another
dog into the bedroom, who was following me into the kitchen. I felt like
I was catching up to myself.”
And she heard her footsteps.
Footsteps ahead, footsteps behind,
clicking off the hardwood floor, and
she would turn but no one would be
there, just the sounds of footsteps
echoing around in the big, empty
house.
She decided, the morning of the
fourth day, to go out and bring in
her few belongings, put her dishes
into the cupboards, her clothes into
the closet, but when she opened the
door of the truck, the dogs jumped
onto their perch behind the driver’s
seat, wagging their tails, and smiling expectantly with their tongues
“Sure,” the lady had replied,
“I’ve got people waiting in line for
it.”
She had reached into her purse
and pulled out the one hundred
dollar bill.
“I kind of figured you wouldn’t
be staying. You can stay in the side
yard until you figure out what
you’re going to do.”
Two weeks later she was
headed south toward Quartzsite,
Arizona, arrived in August, almost
two months early for the tourist season, picked out her spot, backed up
against Tyson Wash so no one could
get behind her, and settled in, her
and the dogs, sitting on a bed that’s
supposed to be the dinette but
never is, looking out the window,
watching and waiting for someone
to come over to ask her if she wants
to go to Blythe or Quartzsite.
“You can’t grow apples on the
roof,” she said, “and I can’t change
the way I live. I’ve never wished for
much and little or nothing is better
than a bushel of absurd.”
She’ll never be able to live in a
house; it isn’t in her to do it. She has
hibernated into her cocoon, into the
small, secure, familiar box that is
her home and sanctuary. There she
will stay, moving when she must for
as long as she is able to drive, fixing and puttering, walking and
gathering wood for her fire, patting
and loving her dogs, wishing for
little, hoping for less, waiting to
pass beyond that fragile mortal coil
to become a part of the wind and
sky and sand.
If she fears anything, it is that
someone will put her into a nursing
home where she won‘t be able to
have her dogs, her little things, precious few that she has, to die among
strangers.
Our Thanksgiving dinner, the
ham and mashed potatoes, the
green beans and gravy, the bread
and steaming coffee digested,
settled, lulling us into a comfortable, pleasant, head-nodding relaxation. We watched the last
chunks of greasewood and mesquite crumble to dull, red, dying
embers, then, hating to give up the
moment, we said goodnight and
wandered away to our separate cocoons, surrendering the night to the
desert foxes and coyotes.
Two Crows Woman was up
early the next morning, let her dogs
out for their morning run, and came
over to see how I was. It had been a
bone-chilling night.
“That felt like a three dog night
to me,” I said.
“Was,” she answered.
I fixed breakfast. Diced ham
and scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and pan-fried bread, and we
talked casually for two hours.
“I’m a little stiff in the mornings,” she said after she had finished the breakfast. “It takes me a
couple of hours to work out the
kinks, but by the time I get back
from my walk, I feel pretty good.”
“Well, we’re all like that nowadays,” I replied. “Even those of us
who live in the big city with all its
comforts and conveniences.”
For a woman who was nearly
seventy years old she was doing remarkably well.
She told me about nights with
her late husband, in this very spot,
she would watch Mexicans hiding
in the canals, trying to elude the
border patrol agents. She often set
out bottles of water and nonperishable food (which she referred to as
“the pauper’s share,”) and admitted she was always a little sad when
they got caught and were locked up
in the trucks and hauled away to be
sent back to Mexico.
I stayed for six weeks there on
the cold and dusty desert beneath
the burning sky and shimmering
stars, talking and listening as she
carefully revealed the events of her
life that led her to this place at this
time.
When the last fire burned itself
out and blew away in swirls of white
powder, I decided to pack up and
head over to the Colorado River for
a couple of days.
She followed me to my
motorhome, head down, shuffling a
little, as if she was embarrassed to
be sad that I was leaving.
“I suppose you’ll write and let
everyone know you found me,“ she
said simply. She meant her sister
and nieces, and my parents, who
had known her for years, but who
had all lost track of her because she
refused to answer any of their letters.
I told her I would.
“Whatever you do, don’t make
it sound like I’m doing without, or
that I’m lonely or miserable, or say
anything to make people worry
about me.”
I promised I wouldn’t, hugged
her goodbye, and I swear I think the
dear old thing was close to tears. As
I drove away, I felt it was one of the
finest, and at the same time, one of
the saddest, Thanksgiving holidays
I’d ever had.
She’s just one of those gypsy
drifters who escaped from “reality”
only to discover a new and different reality. She had come face to
face with herself and found that
she’d finally escaped from the
prison of civilized people and its
limitations. She is as free and as
happy as a person can possibly be
these days, and always has been.
She always will be if someone
doesn’t cage her up in an old
people’s home where she would
most certainly die. She isn’t a person who can tolerate captivity, the
restrictions of civilization, the limitations of the system. She uses it,
this system, when it suits her, and
rarely at that, hovering just beyond
its grasp, ready to flee at a
moment’s notice, ready to drift
away like the mist and fog of a fine
spring morning, ready to waft away
like a piece of angel hair on the winter wind, coursing away from familiar campfires and familiar faces,
bound for new highways, looking,
watching, waiting, listening for
those footsteps behind her, those
little reminders sumped from the
deep wells of her past that tell her
it is time to move on, one more time,
for one more summer, one more
winter, neither hoping for nor expecting a return journey.
Her life is an endless cycle of
moving and stopping, building and
tearing down, setting up camp and
breaking camp, half settled, half
not, mountain and river, desert and
rock.
Wind and sky and sand. Eternally there, but forever moving and
changing, eroding away until there
is nothing left but the memory of
warm summer days with good
friends under a pleasant sky, happy
faces in the campfire, and three dog
nights.
I wonder, in my more reflective
moments, how that frail, tiny old
woman can manage to exist alone
in that wide, hostile, and unforgiving land without the comforts upon
which most of us have come to depend. She has neither heat nor running water nor electricity and, yet,
she is satisfied with her life.
She admits, quite candidly, that
she is “uneducated” and “unschooled,” yet she has a keen, introspective view of people and the
world, even if it is tainted with a fair
amount of cynicism and mistrust at
times.
Perhaps her misanthropic tendency is not unfounded. Perhaps,
because she borders on being a
feral human, she simply cannot see
or understand true compassion and
sympatico when she confronts it.
I sometimes think her husband
may have done her a great injustice
by not providing her with a place
to which she could return in her late
years, a place among friends and
relatives where she could live her
last years in peace and comfort
without the need to pursue her constant and endless journey to nowhere.
I have a drawer full of letters
from her, written to my parents over
a period of ten years, and they
present a fascinating and vivid picture of her life, her state of mind,
and both of their uncertainties and
morbid despair over never really
discovering what they were searching for.
One wonders, while scanning
the pages, what they were after, for
there seemed to be nothing tangible, nothing concrete, they could
point toward and state, “This is why
we came this way; this is what we
wanted to do.“
It seems they had no sooner
landed in one spot than they were
looking for another.
Some things she wrote stick in
the mind like mud on a new pair of
boots. In one letter, written after
they had gone to Oregon to see his
brother, she was remembering
Florida as if she had experienced it
in another lifetime, and wrote:
‘Sometimes it seems as if I dreamed
it all.’
That one simple expression,
made at the end of a letter, almost
seems to summarize her entire life
experience. Incapable of dealing
with humanity on a one to one basis, she expresses her life as a series of dreamed vignettes, out of order and not quite working properly
all of the time.
They seemed to feel they were
straw in a whirlwind, blowing aimlessly, picked from the greening
shade of the Suwanee River to be
dropped by some whim of nature
on a desolate plateau against a
backdrop of wide and hostile
desert in Arizona, as if they really
had nothing to do with it, as if, devoid of reason or explanation, it was
occurring as a dream, something
beyond their control to change or
stop, as if they were so fascinated
by the dream, the nightmare, they
couldn’t wake up, or didn’t want to.
If they had drifted with purpose,
intent on seeing the land and its
haunting beauty for the sake of the
seeing, the knowing, the understanding, it might make some
sense, but one is always aware that,
just at the edge of the seemingly
endless journey, they expected to
reach a specific, if ill-defined, destination. They seemed to be trying
to get somewhere, but I’m left with
the terrible precognition that they
were never going to find it.
One letter was written and
mailed from Arizona, brimming
with plans and ideas to move on to
a specific goal. A few days later, another was mailed from Oregon, explaining why the plans didn’t work
and, a few days later, another was
mailed from Florida. Plans were
made but never carried out,
dreams were never realized, and
the search continued, endlessly,
endlessly. Mountain and river,
desert and stone. Half settled, half
not, but pushing onward, ever and
forever, toward some final reckoning neither they nor those of us who
knew them can put a finger on.
Few of the people who share a
piece of the desert in winter are
true nomads. They have homes
somewhere, ranches in Wyoming,
country homes in Montana, quiet
places in Colorado to which they
can return when winter is done and
the sky turns from grey to blue,
when the wind blows warm, and the
first crocus of spring peeks confidently from fertile soil.
That’s why they bring their television sets; they don’t want to escape civilization. They want to know
it’s out there, just beyond the door,
just beyond the sun-washed hills,
lingering just at the edge of their
sensibilities.
They have places to go when
the snows have melted and run off
to the sea. Friends are waiting anxiously for their return. Relatives
write and expect an answer.
The old woman does not belong
to their world. She has made no pact
with the rest of humanity; was never
seduced into the traps and cul-desacs of society.
For whatever reason she considers valid, she has turned aside
from the mainstream of human life
and endeavor, choosing, without
spoken regret, to drift as aimlessly
as a brown leaf in a turbulent river,
pushed this way and that as the seasons and circumstances dictate. A
gypsy. A loner. A drifter.
Yet, in one moment, despite all
she said to the contrary, she revealed her true emotion when she
walked to my motorhome with her
head down, her dark eyes flat and
empty, her steps slow and shuffling,
her shoulders bent, and said qui-
etly, “We wish you could stay
awhile longer,” and, “We’re glad
you found us.” There were only this
many words. I could hold them all
in one hand and they wouldn't
weigh a gram.
it they would have stopped and
looked around, would have known
it was their place and time, would
have smiled and said, “Now this is
what we have longed to find; let us
stay and be happy.”
She seemed, on one hand, to
regret not having solid roots and
lasting friends, seemed to almost
envy the transient friends who pass
through her life, knowing that they
will be one day gone to their homes
in far places, and, paradoxically,
she seems to resent them because
they represent a social order to
which she cannot subscribe.
But time, merciless and unforgiving, finally proved too great an
adversary for him, and the old
woman, for all her courage and bravado, simply doesn’t know how to
continue without him, has been
swept away by a current too swift,
in a river too wide. Caught alone in
the middle, with neither shore attainable, she has determined only
to tread water, willing to let the current carry her to whatever destination lies beyond the rapids.
I felt, that Thanksgiving afternoon, that she really wished she
had a home and family, because she
was genuinely glad to have someone with whom to talk, but that she
denies that need because she never
had it and doesn’t know how to deal
with it.
Somewhere, sometime, the
world and people abandoned her,
and now she has abandoned it and
them because it is easier to trust the
dogs, and the rocks and trees, than
it is to trust fickle humans.
Oddly enough, during the two
times I have visited her, I have
found her good company. The most
amazing insights spring unbidden
from her mind, but they are onesided insights conjured up from a
life of rejection and repression, yet
so persuasive are they that one
might almost be convinced that all
of humanity is basically evil and not
to be trusted.
If their journey had been a vacation, a pleasant time for a few
months, with a returning to familiar
friends, maybe (and just maybe) I
might understand, but I know from
reading the letters, from talking
with her, from watching and listening, that there was a someplace, a
sometime, an elsewhen, they were
searching for, that if they had found
She sits now in a desert she professed to hate some years ago when
her husband first took her there,
waiting for an ending she can neither hasten nor will away, waiting
to become a part of the wind and
sky and sand; afraid to love, afraid
to give, unwilling to die or to live,
not wanting to go on, unable to turn
back, waiting in a windswept, barren land that offers no comfort and
little beauty; a landscape that, by
its outward emptiness, seems to be
a mirror image of her life.
Backed up against Tyson Wash,
so no one can get close to her, without her rock polisher, without the
trailer she cherished so many years
ago—the one she couldn’t bear to
leave behind in Florida because
she feared the roof would rust
through and the tires would go
soft—without her husband, or her
books, with not even the dream to
sustain her, she sits on her bed,
staring with eyes flat and expressionless, waiting for the universe to
be rid of her, and she of it.
Too quickly the year was drawing to a close. Too quickly the mill
of heaven was grinding to a halt; the
wheels of time now broken and put
away forever.
I never saw Two Crows Woman
again but I think of her often. I think
of her when I hear the cooing of the
owls or the quarreling of the ravens;
when the Autumn winds are soft in
the Sweet Gum trees; when raindrops are spiraling down from
dark, inscrutable skies and heavy
grey clouds are chasing the ammonia colored moon across the stars.

Two Crows Woman—friend. The
river is not too wide; no, not too
wide, not too swift and not too deep.
