‘Many of our students to pursue degree courses in UK and US’
BSK hosts annual Awards Evening for Year 6-13 students
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 3: The annual
Awards Evening for the Year 6-13 students at The British School of Kuwait
(BSK) took place in lavish style at the AlBaraka Grand Ballroom at the Crowne
Plaza Hotel, as parents and staff celebrated
the many and varied achievements of the
school year 2013-14.
The Secondary Head Teacher,
Andrew Moulden, welcomed parents,
staff and students, before delivering his
Annual Report, including recent developments and plans for further improvement.
Moulden reviewed whole-school
developments and the evolution of the
improvement planning process within
the Secondary phase at BSK, including
the creation of Strategic Intents (SIs) to
ensure common purpose and the use of
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to
monitor progress inform future steps.
Moulden outlined how these mechanisms are bringing about further
improvements in academic attainment,
extracurricular involvement and in standards of attendance, punctuality, uniform and behaviour.
Parents were delighted to learn that
BSK’s June 2014 examination results
were again superb, with 92% A*-C at
IGCSE and GCSE, a 95% A-E rate at AS
Level and, for the fifth year in a row, a
100% A*-E pass rate at A Level, 92% of
which were at grade C or above.
Moulden informed parents and guests
that, once again, many Year 13 students
had decided to pursue their degree
courses in Britain, with destinations
including the Universities of London,
Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and
Edinburgh. The second most popular
destination was the United States, with
BSK graduates joining the University
of California, the University of
Washington, Indiana University and
Boston University. In Canada, two
graduates joined the University of
British Columbia and one joined the
University of Toronto. Two students
Private Education, Abdullah Al Basri,
joined the Ambassadors of Senegal,
Bhutan and Mongolia to present special
awards to a number of students who
excelled in a wide range of curricular
and extra-curricular activities. The
BSK String Orchestra, under the baton
of Ms Galina Bojilova, served up a
feast of music including a medley in
commemoration of the centenary of
World War 1 and the opening movement from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
The Guest of Honour was Colonel
Stephen Kilpatrick OBE, Deputy
Commander, British Military Mission,
who reminisced about his own teachers
and reflected on the significance to students of some of the particular strengths
of The British School of Kuwait which
were identified in their British Schools
Overseas (BSO) inspection report.
Plaque
A photo from the event
joined the Bahrain campus of the Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland, and
other Year 13 destinations included
Germany and Australia.
Examinations
The prestigious Subject Awards went
to the top student in each subject in
each year group, many of whom
achieved near to 100% in their final
examinations. The Roll of Honour was
read by the Assistant Head Teacher,
John Lambert.
The Awards Evening also honoured
over 200 students who achieved
Excellence Awards in 2013-14. Now in
their fourth year, the Excellence Awards
were conceived to celebrate and
encourage a high level of success
across a broad range of subjects. The
Rolls of Honour were read by the
Department Coordinators Miss Khadija
Broome, Ms Estelle Jones and Ms
Emma Bowie. The Excellence Award
winners were warmly applauded by
parents and guests.

The final student awards of the
evening were the Head Teachers’
Awards, presented by Colonel
Kilpatrick and BSK Founder Mme Vera
Al-Mutawa. Eight such awards were
conferred, to one student from each of
the previous Years 5-12. The Primary
Head Teacher, Mark Brisbane, honoured ex-Year 5 student Ashria Sidhu,
and the Secondary Head Teacher conferred awards upon Cian Williams,
Maria Elias, Mark Sedhom, Renata
Gelevska, Thomas Holgate, Sina Abou
Zahr and Hee Soo Yang.
In a surprise climax to the evening,
Head Boy Ethan Harradine and Head Girl
Pema Tshogyal presented a plaque to BSK
Director Mme Vera Al-Mutawa in celebration of her being made a Member of the
Order of the British Empire (MBE) for
her services to British education and to the
community in Kuwait.
BSK Principal, Paul Shropshire,
rounded off the evening by proposing a
vote of thanks, congratulating the students on their great successes and looking ahead to another year of hard work
and exceptional achievements.
