We Are Grateful
Happy Thanksgiving to all our residents and family
members! Before the incredible food, parades and the
exciting football games, we pause to express our gratitude
for family, friends, health and home. Our early settlers
realized their survival was a gift and that a bountiful harvest
was an additional blessing. This time of tradition and
sharing reminds us to give thanks for the riches we enjoy,
but more importantly, to be grateful for the gift of life and
the meaning of life experience. How can we show gratitude
for being alive? We can live with intention and enjoy every
opportunity available. We can accept responsibility for our
lives. Inspire others through our actions. Keep an open
mind. Joyfully embrace each day. Talk lovingly. We can
showcase our talents. Keep our promises. And remember
to say thank you. These are gifts we can give to each other
and ourselves. The result will be a renewed energy and
strengthened spirit. Thank you for being part of our SLC
family. Happy Thanksgiving!
Welcome November! Honoring Veterans
On Veterans Day we come together to honor men and
women who have worn the uniform of the United States
Armed Forces. Americans across the land commemorate
the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve the
liberty of our Nation, the families who support them and
the heroes no longer with us. For over two centuries our
Veterans have taken on the challenge and responsibility
necessary to protect our freedoms. They have preserved
our way of life with unwavering patriotism and courage.
After leaving the uniform behind, Veterans continue to
serve the country as generous neighbors, hardworking
employees, loving parents and friends, mentors, public
servants and community leaders. We are fortunate to have
many Veterans residing in our Senior Lifestyle communities.
We also have numerous staff members who have served
in the Armed Forces. And we look forward to this day to
help them tell their stories and publicly thank these men
and women for their service. Some SLC communities will
choose to host a program of speakers, honorees and
music. Some will sponsor intergenerational essay projects.
Others will toast our Veterans, display their photos and
memorabilia, and listen to their stories. Members of the
Armed Services may join us for an Open House and tree
planting ceremony. And in some communities, residents,
staff and volunteers will learn more about the Veterans
History Project and how we can participate. There will be
flags and wreaths, “Taps” and prayers, and medals proudly
worn. May the men and women of the Armed Forces know
the depth of our gratitude. Thank you for your service.

Apron Memories
Many of us can remember our mothers, grandmothers and other
women in the family wearing aprons. Of course the apron was
worn to protect clothing as Grandmother only had a few dresses.

The First Thanksgiving
Festivals with the spirit of giving thanks have
been common in many cultures, so determining
the original Thanksgiving celebration proves
difficult. But tradition recognizes the 1621 feast
between the Pilgrim settlers at Plymouth Colony
and neighboring American Indians as America’s
first Thanksgiving.
Sailing from England aboard the Mayflower, the
Pilgrims arrived in present-day Massachusetts
in the fall of 1620, yet remained on the ship
for several months. When the colonists moved
ashore the following spring, they were visited
by two English-speaking Indians, Samoset and
Squanto, who showed the Pilgrims how to hunt
and grow their own food. Squanto also served
