daughters celebrated the end of thirteen years
of schooling with many teachers present. This
is a milestone event that had strong reflection,
sharing of memories and great joy with the
strong bonds between our students being very
evident on the night.
International Youth Silent Film Festival
I wish to commend Ms Elise Dorian and her
talented Year 10 students who recently had
their short films showcased at the International
Youth Silent Film Festival held at the Kingston
Arts Centre. It was pleasing to note that our
students work was ranked in the top twenty
schools selected at this festival.

OXI Day
During the course of this week, we celebrated
OXI Day, with our students involved in a range
of plays, recitals and songs to commemorate
this important date in the Greek calendar. We
were privileged to have His Grace, Bishop
Iakovos of Miletoupolis present during our
student performances. Oakleigh Grammar
students also attended the annual celebration

be a strong multicultural event representing the theme of ‘unity through
diversity’.

Senior School Report
Last week Year 12 celebrated their final days as students of
Oakleigh Grammar. The Class of 2014 concluded their last
week in a fashion that has certainly set a new standard in
Senior School celebrations. Their final assembly was full of
good cheer, genuine care for each other and their teachers.
More importantly, the sentiments expressed by the School
Captains, Victoria and Vasili Giannetakis on Tuesday
epitomised the regard these students have for their School.
But I must say my favourite event of the week was the
Graduation Dinner on Thursday evening. My feet hurt for
three days because of all the dancing! The evening
highlighted the all-important relationships that have developed
over the year between students and their teachers.
Along with the other members of the Year 12 wellbeing team,
Mary Spiropoulos and Steve Zafiropoulos, we have watched
them grow as individuals and know that they are ready for the
next step in their journey. I would like to sincerely thank both
Mary and Steve for all their hard work and
support this year. It has been a pleasure to
work closely with them throughout the year.
As the written exams now loom large, it is up to
the students themselves to ensure their chosen
path is achievable. We know they can and will
do it. Good luck Year 12 and thank you for a
great year.
Senior School Semester 2 Examinations
Examinations will commence on Friday
November 14 and conclude on Thursday
November 20. Timetables and revision
information was forwarded to students earlier
this week.
Year 12 Farewell Assembly
In a week of celebrations and
reflections, Tuesday 21 October
provided an opportunity for our
graduating Year 12 students to
farewell the student body of Oakleigh
Grammar and the teachers who have
aided their development for the last 13
years.
In an assembly designed specifically
to honour our students, the Year 12s
left their mark for the last time. School
Captains Vasili Giannetakis and
Victoria Giannetakis reflected on 2014
and the journey of this group through
the Junior, Middle and Senior
Schools. They also reflected on their
leadership roles, thanked the School
community for their support, and paid
Sharron Frame, Head of SS
tribute to the teachers who played such a
great role in their schooling.
In front of their families, the Year 12s were
individually presented with flowers from the
Prep classes of 2014, as a changing of the
guard and a symbol of one journey ending
and another commencing.
An emotional and warm event, this assembly was a fitting
farewell to our Year 12s and ended with a morning tea for
them, their families and teachers. The graduating class of
2014 is wished the best of success and invited to maintain
close ties with the community through the Alumni.

Drama News
Year 10 Drama students make film festival finals
I am pleased to announce that two out of four groups made it into the Victorian region finals of the International Youth Silent
Film Festival. The festival aims to give young filmmakers the opportunity to create their own silent movies that accompany a
score played by an organ. There were seven genres that the students chose from to guide their storylines.
The Oakleigh Grammar groups that made it through were of the ‘horror’ genre. The students were very excited about seeing
themselves on the big screen at Kingston Arts Centre on 25 October. The audience ‘dressed to the nines’ to get into the
spirit of the ʻroaring twentiesʼ inspired theme, calling back the era of silent film. Taken back to cinema’s golden age, original
silent films were screened with a live accompaniment of original scores composed by award-winning organist Nathan
Avakian, who travelled from the US to play the 1928 Wurlitzer Organ live on the night.
This is a huge achievement!
Please congratulate the Year 10 Drama students.

Name Day of His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis
On Thursday October 23, the Orthodox Church celebrated the feast day of St. Iakovos the Apostle, the brother of our
Lord. As part of the liturgical life of our School, members of the SRC and Middle School Leaders attended the Divine
Liturgy at St Eustathios Church in South Melbourne. Mrs Angelis and Mrs Spanos accompanied the students. At the end
of the Liturgy, students had the opportunity to pass their wishes on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar to His Grace Bishop
Iakovos of Miletoupolis.
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia's annual celebration of "OXI" Day was held on Sunday 26 October 2014.
Emilia Kazanidis, Nicholas Kazanidis and Lukas Smyrnis as part of the SRC represented our School at the Holy

International Tour 2014
In the last week of Term 3 and up until the last week of the
holidays, eight of us were busy travelling from Greece to Italy
and Athens to Rome…
Tour participants: Marina Mendrinos (Year 11), Victoria
Balderanos (Year 11), Themelina Panayi (Year 11) Christina
Liatsos (Year 11), Ellie Rose Mertikas (Year 11), Elena Nikas
(Year 9), Mr Greg Joyce and Mrs Paula D. Tsiagalos.
Our adventure started in Athens, the capital of Greece and
ended in Rome, the capital of Italy. Our itinerary was jam
packed with lots of travelling, sightseeing and learning. All of
which where achieved and more, much, much, more…
In Athens, we conquered the Acropolis and breathed in the
view of the cityscape and the spectacular Parthenon. We
stayed in Plaka, the old city of Athens and from there we
ventured out on day tours in and around Athens, caught a
tram to Glyfada beach, booked a train trip and overnight
accommodation to the mystical and ancient monasteries of
Kalambaka and Meteora, and spent an amazing 4 days on
the island of Aegina.
Our adventures in Greece came to a quick end as we
packed our bags and continued on our trip.
We flew into Milan-Italy, the fashion center of the world and
home of some of the world’s leading international designers,
which include Gucci, Prada, Armani, Versace, and Dolce &
Gabbana. We were definitely in our element!!
Our last stop was Rome where we had a guided tour of the
Vatican Museum, the largest museum complex in the world,
with over 1000 museums full of masterpieces collected by
the successive popes. We also entered St Peter’s Basilica
and were in awe of the largest church ever constructed.
Some of the other sites we walked to in Rome were the
Pantheon- the only monument from Ancient Rome that still
remains completely intact, the Coliseum- one of the Seven
Wonders of the World. We walked over the Trevi Fountain,
something very few people have done, but that’s another
story…
We took on the challenge of climbing up 919 steps of the
Duomo di Milano instead of taking the lift and this was
certainly an achievement we were all proud of, while taking
amazing photos of the spectacular view of Milan.
Venice was our next stop. As frustrating as it is fascinating,
Venice was not an easy city to get around. Getting lost is a
given…there is no map in existence that fully encompasses
Venice and we learnt this soon enough.
And yes, the whole place is sinking — literally under rising
sea levels, and beneath the weight of thousands of tourists.
Nevertheless, we still relaxed in Piazza San Marco, toured
the Doge’s Palace, took a moonlit gondola ride with some
very special friends, while someone could not stop eating
Venice’s famous dessert, tiramisu (it must have been the
coffee!).
Our next stop, Florence or “Firenze”, is the birthplace of the
Italian Renaissance.
The Ponte Vecchio (The Golden Bridge) the only bridge in
Florence to have survived WWII intact, the Doors of
Paradise, the Duomo, and Michelangelo’s David were all so
captivating. The city came to life each evening. Music
lingered gently from somewhere unknown, while people
casually weaved through the city’s paved and narrow
walkways eating gelato whilst indulging for a few hours in
life’s simple things.

Our day trip to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Possitano and
tour of Pompeii left us with one desire… to stay longer and
do so much more. But we knew the end was drawing near.
We all learnt by living, feeling, touching, smelling and tasting
the rich culture and history of both Greece and Italy. The
2014 International Tour was an authentic learning
experience for us all.

Middle School Report
The International Baccalaureate's Learner profile encompasses ten characteristics we are building in our
students. In this article I'll make reference to 3 very important characteristics, 'risk taking', being 'thinkers' and
being 'knowledgable'. These 3 characteristics are particularly relevant to current happenings in Middle School.
Middle School Student Leadership 2015
The very important process of electing our Middle School student leadership team for 2015 has begun. While the Student
Representative Council remains an extremely important avenue for the students to have a voice and to develop their leadership
skills, the official positions for Year 9 students created in 2014 will be offered again in 2015. The current Year 8 students have
already been informed about a number of aspects of the process of becoming an elected leader for 2015. To begin they were
asked to express interest, we then explained some details within the various roles available within Middle School, including
Middle School Captains. In the coming weeks the students will be involved in the process of selecting the Middle School
leaders. All the students in Year 8 will have the opportunity to vote for whom they believe will be their best Middle School male
and female Captain and others will participate in interviews for other roles. The final decision is made by the Head of Middle
School after considering all the relevant information; the student votes, the staff votes, the interview results and discussion with
the Principal. The make up of the Middle School student leadership team will be announced at a Special Middle School
Assembly later in the year where the School will also acknowledge the wonderful leadership that has been displayed this year
by our current Year 9s.
Revision
The preparation for 2015 student leadership only serves to reinforce how quickly the year is progressing. The Melbourne Cup
long weekend is mid term, meaning end of semester tests, assignments, and for our Year 9s, exams, are not far away. It is
more important than ever that our Middle School students are well organised and are keeping up with, and on top of, all work
requirements. Students in Years 6, 7 and 8 should be using their diaries and their Homework Timetables every night, and
students in Year 9 should be using their Essential Learning Folders to help them prepare end of year revision notes for the
upcoming tests and exams. No student in Middle School should be saying they have no homework! There is always some
revision that can be done!
'Risk-taking', being 'thinkers' and being 'knowledgable'
Risk taking is particularly relevant for our current Year 8 students. It is a risk to nominate for a leadership position, but it is a risk
they should be encouraged to take. Even if a student participates in the process but ends up not being appointed to a
leadership role, that person will have grown and benefited from the experience...the experience starts by taking a risk and
getting involved.
Being 'thinkers' is relevant to Year 8, and Year 7 and across the Middle School. The Year 7 and 8 students will be invovled in
the voting process for the 2015 student leaders, they need to think carefully about who they vote for....they should not vote for
their favourite friend...they should vote for the people they believe will be the best leaders of the student body in 2015. Across
the Middle School it's a good time to think about leadership and the roles a leader plays...not just leaders of students in our
School, but leaders of communities and leaders of countries. Thinking globally about leadership should be encouraged and our
students should look up to, and think about, the world leaders.
Finally, being 'knowledgable' is important in the Middle School, now as much as ever. End of year assessments are looming!
Tests, exams and assignments all offer the chance for our students to demonstrate the knowledge they have gained. The end
of the year is fast approaching and before then there will be many assessment tasks to be completed. That will mean there are
opportunities aplenty for our students to show just how knowledgable they've become.

Year 5 student wins Celebrate India Essay Competition
It is my absolute delight to announce that an Oakleigh Grammar student has taken out First Prize in an essay
competition. Steven Kostolopoulos along with his peers in Year 5 wrote an explanation of the Diwali Festival
and its differences/similarities to Christianity. His piece of writing came first in Victoria with a Prize awarded by
the Premier, Dr Denis Napthine at Federation Square on Saturday 25 October.
Steven won two return tickets to India and $1000 spending money and received this Prize at the Celebrate India event at
Federation Square. It was a real treat for the assessors to read the beautifully written essays. At Celebrate India there is
strong belief in and commitment to cross
cultural education. This year 27 schools joined
this initiative while more than 41 inquired.
After 2 rounds of assessments, Celebrate India
Inc. was proud to announce the winning entry
being Steven from Oakleigh Grammar. I pass
on our appreciation to the Year 5 teachers and
all the Year 5 students who participated in this
year's inaugural Indian Essay Competition.
We also recognise the sponsors of the event
being, Air India, Consulate General of India,
Melbourne, AFL and Indian Weekly magazine.
Steven’s essay can be read on the OG
website.

Camp Quality
Earlier this month the Junior School took part in the Camp
Quality Education Program. Through the live puppet show, the
presenters helped us learn how to create a supportive school
community for children living with cancer. The puppets had a
unique way of building trust and engaging the students so they
can address the real issues and dispel concerns regarding contact with children who have cancer. The characters in the show
helped students understand how their actions impact other children by reinforcing anti-bullying and providing practical things
students can do to be a supportive friend and classmate. A very worthwhile in-school experience!

Oxi Day
The students performed marvellously in song and drama
at the annual Oxi Day performance. It was wonderful to
have our Year 5 leaders at the Church Service, our
grandparents for a high tea and then to finish the
afternoon with the Performance. A huge congratulations
to the LOTE department for their work in classrooms
over the last month in preparation and the fine show that
we all enjoyed. It was wonderful to see so many people
in the audience which made it extra special for the
students.
Warmer Weather
It is great to see the students independently
remembering that they need a school sunhat in order to play outside and for Physical Education classes. Please ensure hats
are clearly named so if they are left lying about the playground they can be returned to the rightful owner. We encourage
parents to pack sunscreen in bags if needed. Please be aware that teachers do not apply or supply sunscreen but we can
certainly remind students to do so. Water bottles should be included in the school bag to ensure healthy hydrated brains for
learning.
Invites to student social events
A reminder to families that invitations may be distributed at school if the entire class is invited to the event and the homeroom
teacher is happy to place in the diaries. If not all members of the
class are invited, the invitations need to be mailed externally as
outlined in the Junior School Information Booklet.
Intensive Swimming
Prep, Year 1 and 2 swimming began on Thursday 31 October. Don’t
forget to pack all your swimming essentials as listed in the notice that
was sent home. Students not swimming due to illness need to
provide a medical certificate and will remain with Mrs Papageorgiou at
School this time. Normally, all students would still go to the pool with
their cohort.
Book Fair
Thank you to Ms Chitra and the library staff for running the Semester
2 Book Fair. Not only does this instils a love of reading and books
with their students but also allows the Library to purchase resources with the bonus given to the School. Ms Chitra has
purchased a new camera and a portable projector screen for our School.
Coming Events
We have a number of events coming up this term and you will receive notification as they draw closer. Some of the events
include the ELC and Year 5 Graduations, Transition day, Carols in the Park and the Junior School Awards Evening.

Senior Girls team won all but one game in their round robin competition, but had easy wins in both the semi finals and
grand final. We also entered a Year 8/9 Boys team in the Senior Boys competition and they finished 3 rd in their pool,

Sts Anargiri Greek Language Centre - New classes in 2015 for kinder-aged and secondary students
Kinder classes
Research shows that learning second languages can increase IQ, so what's better for students than learning the Greek
Language and Culture, improving their competency and having fun at the same time?
We are running classes for 3 year old and 4 year old children. Children are able to learn the Greek Language through playing,
dancing, writing and reading.
Wednesday and Friday classes run from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
Saturday class runs from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.
Classical/Ancient Greek Classes
It's our pleasure to inform you that we are running Ancient/Classical Greek classes for students in Years 7-8 -9 and 10 , to be
followed by VCE classes.
The Greek philosophers, poets and writers are among those great spirits who have influenced many people worldwide. The
Ancient/Classical Greek Language has maintained an amazing cohesion of structure and vocabulary for thousands of years,
having contributed to the structure of other languages too, so why shouldn't all the students take advantage of its positive
influence?
