OUR BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
Remembering our loved ones who have joined
our loving God in eternal rest is truly a gift of
our faith. Beginning October 31st there will be
a Book of Remembrance located in the
Eucharistic Chapel in the Church (to the left of
the Altar). Please write the names of your
deceased loved ones in this book so we can
remember them in our prayers and at all of our

The gift of remembering and praying for those
who have gone before us marked with the sign
of faith is a wonderful part of our Catholic
tradition.

THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
SERRA VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE
The Church’s One Foundation Is Jesus
Christ Her Lord
This Sunday we celebrate the
dedication of the oldest church in Christendom
erected by the Emperor Constantine, the
basilica of St. John Lateran. This “mother
church” is a visible symbol of the universal
Church presenting a story of enduring faith
from its inception November 9, 324, to the
present day.
In today’s reading St. Paul likens the
Corinthians to a building and himself to an
architect who planned and executed its
foundation upon Jesus Christ.
The German priest and theologian,
Farther Karl Adam, has stated that the
centuries pass and new generations are
constantly arising; throughout all changes it is
never Peter, or Paul, or Pius that preaches and
baptizes, but always and everywhere Christ,
who is the steward of that one bread which
makes the many into one body.
“Loving Father, keep us united with You
in Your house. May our parish be a place of
fervent worship, self-giving service, and
hospitality to those in need.”
The Pantry is in NEED of the following.
Meals in a can, Macaroni & Cheese, Canned
Vegetables, Can or Boxed Potatoes, Cereal,
Tuna, Soups, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Canned Fruit
& Jelly

THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
Living the Good News Today
“Zeal for your house will consume me.”
Three years ago, my husband Jeff and I attended the
Secular Franciscan Order’s Quinquennial Congress in
Chicago, IL. At this five-year
gathering of lay Franciscans
from all regions of the US, as
well as visitors from Canada,
Mexico,
the
international
fraternity,
and
ecumenical
Franciscans, we had many
opportunities for shared prayer
and liturgy, keynote speakers to
develop the theme, and mini-fraternities in which to
share dialogue on the topics. During our meals, we also
had a chance to reconnect with old friends and meet new
friends, delighting in how the Gospel brings joy to the
world in the simple realization of God’s goodness.
Over two evenings of free time, the quinquennial
organizers offered the opportunity to watch an Italian
movie by Michele Soavi called “Saint Francis.” This
excellent movie was filmed on location in Assisi with a
fine cast. We viewed the movie in Italian with English
sub-titles. After the movie, many of us lingered to talk
about familiar events in the saint’s life, as well as new
spiritual insights which Pietro Valsecchi, the producer,
had hoped would inspire young people growing up in a
difficult moment of history to move beyond
individualism into a deeper spirituality of simplicity and
joy.
As we celebrate the dedication of Saint John Lateran
Basilica this weekend, we learn how this church is
important to the Church: the Lateran is the church of the
bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, just as it was for every
pope who preceded him since the Emperor Constantine
bequeathed the property..
In the year 1209, Francis and his companions
journeyed to Rome to ask Pope Innocent III for his
approval to live the Gospel life. This scene is captured
so well in the movie “Saint Francis”: a group of ragged
beggars comes barefoot into the Lateran, where many
clergy stand in elegant robes. The pope humself is seated
on a high and lofty throne. Francis makes an earnest
appeal to the pope to live the Gospel in poverty. The
pope’s aide admonishes Francis that his vision is too
idealistic and unachievable. The scene ends with the
pope walking away and Francis crying out his anguish
over this disappointing rejection.
However, we must never underestimate God’s call to
those who will listen! Both St. Francis and Pope
Innocent III had dreams. St. Francis dreamt of a king
who fell in love with a poor woman and had two sons,
whom she later sent to the king to claim their
inheritance. The dream compelled St. Francis to return
to the Lateran and approach the Holy Father again to live
the Gospel life by telling him about his dream. The
pope, in turn, shared his dream from the prior day with
St. Francis, in which he saw the pillars of the Lateran
shaking and the church in danger of collapsing. He then
saw someone holding up the walls and preventing the
ruin of the church. Pope Innocent told Francis that as he
looked closer at the poor beggar, he recognized him as
Francis. He knew that God had answered his prayers to
send him someone to preach the Good News and to
rebuild the Church. In that moving scene, Pope Innocent
III empowered St. Francis to live the Good News of the
Gospel and to draw others to Christ.
The Lateran remained significant during the papacy
of Pope Innocent III, who dealt with major historical
issues such as the Crusades, heresies, and numerous
wars being waged within Europe over power and
territory. This pope convened the Fourth Lateran
Council in 1215 to address many issues and to invite
bishops to reform corrupt practices like Jesus saw in the
temple. St. Francis attended the council. The Lateran
inspired the great penitential movements that were
launched during this era. In support of the Holy Father,
the friars would be challenged by St. Francis to be living
signs of conversion wherever they went, preaching the
Good News by their actions which witnessed to God’s
great love for us.
For pilgrims who travel to Rome, a visit to the
church of Saint John Lateran is part of the highlights of
Church history and most certainly a connection to the
pope. As the feast day occurs
on a Sunday this year, it
overshadows the 32nd Sunday
of Ordinary Time and draws us
into something bigger than just
a building and centuries of
architecture and art.
The
Lateran inspires all of us to be
drawn into its history, especially by the same images that
the Prophet Ezekiel gave to the people of the angel
leading us to the temple, where the water of life flows
freely and abundantly, providing fresh life to all
creatures—to the Church, ever ancient, ever new.
St. Francis shared a consuming zeal with Christ to
build up His house. In his daunting visits to the Lateran,
he was able to persuade the pope to believe in him
because he brought Saint Paul’s words to life:
“You are God’s building.”
