“you are God’s building”
NOVEMBER 9, 2014
1 Corinthians 3:9
November: Month of Remembrance
Eucharist
Eucharist is the source and summit
of our lives at The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi. As
disciples, we hunger to be fed and
nourished by the Word and Sacrament of Jesus Christ. Saturday:
5:30 pm / Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30
am*, 11:30 am*, 5:30 pm. Weekdays: 9:00 am in St. Mary of the
Angels Chapel. *Child Care Ministry
available in Clare Hall, age 1 and
walking through age 4.
Baptism
Parents of children under the
age of 7 are invited to participate
in Baptism Preparation and
can register online at

If you’re an adult or have a child, 7
years or older, you can find more

Confirmation
Confirmation is a Sacrament of
mature Christian commitment and
a deepening of baptismal gifts of
the Holy Spirit. Like Baptism and
Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of
Initiation and of faith in God's fidelity
to us. Our regular parish program is
a two-year process that may begin
with entrance to 8th grade.
Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is
an expression of God's forgiveness
of our sins that reconciles the
baptized with God and with the
Church community. It is celebrated
in Advent and Lent communally and
individually at 4:30 pm on Saturday
in the Reconciliation Room (inside
the Eucharistic Chapel).
See page 2
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Inspired by our patron
Francis of Assisi,
we seek to proclaim
the reign of God by
growing in Holiness
through our experience
of Christ in word,
sacrament and
one another,
offering Hope
to those who hunger
for human dignity,
and extending
Hospitality
to all.
Anointing of the Sick
In Anointing of the Sick, the
Church prays that the healing
grace of Christ might touch the
whole person, not just for physical
healing, but that the one sick might
find forgiveness and hope. It is
appropriate to seek it for any
serious illness, physical, emotional
or mental, and not just in danger
of death.
Celebrated communally the
second Wednesday of the month
at the 9:00 am Mass. Also by
request, please call a friar directly.
Please Note: Because of Privacy
Laws, hospitals may not inform us
when a Catholic is in the hospital.
To notify the parish, please call
Jackie Adamo, 919-847-8205x268.
Marriage
The Sacrament of Marriage
celebrates the love of a couple
who enter into a covenant with
God and one another. Couples
planning to be married must make
arrangements at least six months
before the intended wedding. Call
Terri Layer, 919-847-8205x289 to

Last weekend, at all the masses was the
Commemoration of All Souls in which we remembered the deceased who had gone before us. At
the 5:30 vigil mass on Saturday after the homily,
we had a ritual in which we read the names of
those from the parish who died in the past year.
As we read the names, people came forward with
photographs of the deceased, which we then placed on the corner
steps of the altar. Each person was then handed a small votive
candle, which we placed around the baptismal font. As all of this
happened, the lights in the church were dimmed and the area
around the font was illuminated.
As people came up and handed me their photos, I asked them
to tell me the name of the person who died. There were mothers,
fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, husbands, wives, a 36-weekold child. In the photographs, these people were smiling, they were
at parties, they were among friends, there was one riding a horse
in the bright sunshine in what looked to be Wyoming or Montana.
After the last person came up, the corner steps of the altar had
become an altar in itself with the photos lit up by candles and the
votives around the font adding to the sense of light shining in the
dark. And later at the offertory, the smoke of incense rising into the
darkness, recalled Psalm 141, “my prayer rises like incense before
you.”
For some, afterwards, I could see that the grief still lingers. One
woman told me about her father who died in May, how the original
shock of it had gone away, but how hard it still was for her. There
is no time limit on grieving. It can stay with us for a long time, and
still, the rituals, the prayers shine their own light on grieving.
Through Baptism may
they walk always as

I remember a few years ago one of my father’s best friends, a man
named Joe who was also my godfather, died in Florida and we had
his funeral on a cold snowy day in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. At
the funeral, I looked out and saw family and friends all gathered
together in the church, and I remembered all the times we had
shared with Joe and his family in the summers, falls, and winters in
New Hampshire – swimming in the lakes, hiking in the mountains,
and skiing. The memories stay with us and in the church on that
day I was reminded that Joe, when I was baptized as an infant, as
my godfather would have been holding the baptismal candle as a
witness, and here, at his funeral all these years later, the Easter
candle was lit, also as a witness, a sign of resurrection. As Joe
held up the light of Christ for my parents on that day of my baptism,
now we held up the light of Christ on the day of his funeral. At the
beginning of our lives and at the end, we are loved by God and
destined for life with God. We continue to pray throughout the
month for all those who have died.
A couple of discoveries for me in the past week: one is the “Small
Treasures” exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art, with some
exquisite small paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and others.
Another is the gem that is Umstead Park, with its miles of walking
trails just off of route 70. And thanks to all who helped to organize
the Fair Trade Market last weekend. It looked to be a great
success, and a witness to the value of buying with a social
conscience. Blessings on your week!

A New Prayer Ministry for Adults
C
ross Time is a prayer ministry where
two or more parents, guardians, or
other adults who care about our
youth, meet during the time of Cross
Train/Cross Road (middle and high school)
ministry nights, to pray for a release of God’s
power upon our youth and our church.
We will pray using a format called The Four
Steps of Prayer: Praising God for who He is,
Asking for Forgiveness, Thanksgiving, and Intercession. Sacred Scripture is used throughout
the time as we pray scripturally for our children,
other students, and the youth ministry staff and
volunteers. No experience necessary, only a
desire to pray for our young people and lift
them up to God!
Our next session will be Sunday, November 9,
at 7:00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament chapel
in the church. All are welcome.

Eucharist Children
The children of our community who are preparing to
receive the sacred sacraments of 1st Reconciliation
and 1st Eucharist will begin their experience this week
by participating with their parents in a retreat here on
campus. The focus of the retreat will be forgiveness,
healing, and becoming more loving as they learn
about the Reconciliation. Because it is the job and
the joy of the whole parish to prepare and initiate its
children into the Eucharistic life of the Church, we ask
that you keep these children and their families in your
prayers this weekend and in their special year ahead!

prepare to receive these sacraments, contact

ur annual Fair Trade Market
last weekend was a big
success. Many parishioners
bought fair trade items such
as chocolate, coffee, toys, jewelry,

Jinja, JustNeem, Holyland Christian

One World Market.
Thanks to all who volunteered and
helped make the market happen and to

P
ope Francis talks often of the “throwaway society” of modern
secular culture. By this he means the disregard of dominant
social systems for people and the environment which our
materialistic society uses to make money without regard for
their inherent worth. The lives of people who work full time at low
wages to raise families, yet still can’t make ends meet, raise questions
for people of faith about our society’s values and business models.
Join us Nov. 20 for our next Justice & Peace “Signs of the Times”
movie night. We’ll watch the PBS documentary “Waging a Living,”
which follows four low-income working people over three years as they
struggle to achieve financial security. Afterward, we’ll have a small
group discussion about poverty and Catholic Social Teaching. Hope
to see you there! RSVP to [email protected] or

Come and Visit Us
O
n Sunday, October 26, many families from
our parish and the community participated
in our Fall Open House. Families joined
parents, staff and students in grades 5 - 8
for tours around our beautiful campus. Prospective
students and their parents had the opportunity to
meet our faculty, staff, current students and parents.
They also participated in interactive activities using
our SMART Board technology, a state-of-the-art,
high-tech tool that we use daily to provide interactive
math, science, social studies, reading, religion,
and other curriculum-related opportunities for
learning.
The Franciscan School also welcomed families from
our own St. Francis of Assisi Preschool this past
Friday to introduce families to our Kindergarten
program. Families observed class activities, watched
Kindergarteners participate in Music and Movement
Class and Media, and asked questions of Kindergarten teachers in a Q & A session.
If you missed our Fall Open House, don’t worry! Join
us for our Winter Open House that will be held following Mass on Sunday, Jan. 25. We also offer private
tours on a daily basis and our doors are always open
to welcome those who would like to tour our school.
We are accepting applications for the 2015-16 school
year, so schedule your tour by contacting Lura Tysiac
at [email protected] or by calling
919-847-8205x469. Please come visit us and see

A
s we celebrate the dedication of the Basilica
of St John Lateran, we celebrate the home
of the “pope.” In learning about this Basilica,
I found that St. Peter’s Basilica is the one I
know and gets all the attention of the Vatican, but it’s
the Basilica of St John Lateran that’s really the “pope’s
church.” I also learned about the beautiful, large statue
of St. Francis with his arms outstretched that is situated
across the busy Roman street from the Basilica. It is
said that if you stand at a particular angle a few feet
behind the statue, you see the image of St. Francis
holding up the Basilica from its foundation. It is supposed to represent when Jesus said to St. Francis:
“Rebuild my church.” It took Francis a while to realize
Jesus was not talking about the brick and mortar of the
church building. Jesus was talking about building the
foundation of Christ within us. St. Francis was being
asked to build the foundation of Christ within himself
and lead others. Once he realized this, St. Francis
requested an audience with Pope Innocent III at the
Basilica of St John Lateran. The pontiff had a dream
the night before of a simple man in a poor man’s
woolen habit holding up the Basilica. The pontiff
recognized that St. Francis was being called to rebuild
the foundation of God within the whole church.
As we look around today and appreciate our church’s
brick and mortar, we have so much to appreciate.
Look at this gorgeous sanctuary and our blooming
memorial gardens: Walk through our Clare Fellowship
Hall. Notice the simple yet dignified school buildings.
Stop by the Assisi Café and look in the wonderful gym
and community rooms.
Even though we have beautiful structures and we do
not need to worry about rebuilding falling down buildings, we need to remember the Bible Byte of the week:
“You are God’s Building.” Then, we need to take look
at our foundation. Are we solid, sure, and strong?
Do we have Christ as our foundation? Are we building
the foundation of our church? Look around, I’m sure
you can find a place that needs a little brick and mortar.
Look for where you see the need to rebuild God’s
building.

Black Catholic History Month: St. Monica
St. Monica, an African laywoman is a saint with whom
most black women can readily and easily identify because
Monica epitomized the present-day black woman. She
was a devout Christian and an obedient disciple of St.
Ambrose. Through her patience, gentleness, and prayers,
she converted her pagan husband. Before her death,
Monica had the great joy of knowing that Augustine had
returned to God and was using all his energies to build
Christ's Church. St. Monica's feast day is August 27.

Faith in Action: Catholic Social Teaching
Monthly Theme: Life & Dignity of the Human Person:
Catholic teaching offers a unique perspective on crime and
punishment. It begins with the recognition that the dignity of the
human person applies to both victims and offenders. It affirms
our commitment to support victims and their families. It also
acknowledges the God-given dignity of every human life, even
those who do great harm. Our fundamental respect for every
human life and for God, who created each person in his image,
requires that we choose not to end a human life in response to
violent crimes if non-lethal options are available.
“All Christians and people of good will are thus
called today to struggle not only for abolition of the
death penalty … but also to improve prison conditions, out of respect for the human dignity of persons
deprived of their liberty.” - Pope Francis
Pray: For people on death row and for victims and their
families
