Oh that cold winter wind is coming. I feel it as I walk around
the neighborhood, rejoicing in the beautiful fall leaves, blue skies
and crisp air. Come in from the cold and warm up with our concerts and open stage opportunities. I am pleased to announce
that the Guitar Society is a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the
Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to support our work this season. We are very fortunate in Minnesota to have grant funding
available for the arts from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund,
through the Legacy Amendment. Here are some events to look for:
Sundin Music Hall – November 14, our Flamenco Guitarathon
will feature five Minnesota guitarists. On December 6 we will host
GFA winner, classical guitarist Anton Baranov from Russia.
Community concerts: Sunday morning, October 26th at 9 a.m.
listeners of KFAI radio will be able to hear two of our local artist
series performers, Kyle Fosburgh and Christoph Bruhn playing
and talking about our first community concert of the year, free and
open to the public, on November 1st, 2 p.m. at Hosmer library in
Minneapolis.
Open Stage meets on the second Sunday of the month from 2-4 at
the Underground Music Café in Falcon Heights.
There is ample free parking for Sundin Hall and Hosmer
Library and both venues are handicap accessible. Please join us.

W
hen you
hear the
word
flamenco what
comes to mind
first for most people is the dancers.
With their heels stamping the ground to a strong rhythm, standing tall with a proud almost defiant posture. They dance with
an intensity that can be intimidating to an audience unfamiliar
with this art form. But dance is only one part of flamenco. It also
includes singing, handclapping and of course the guitar. In fact,
over the last few decades the flamenco guitar has begun to be
recognized as a solo instrument within the flamenco community
and the general population.
This role of the guitarist in flamenco, in evolving from a supporting player carrying the rhythm for the dancers and singers,
to an equal partner in the performance, can be attributed to a
number of guitarists. Sabicas and Nino Ricardo had an influence in helping this change to occur. However, one guitarist took
what these pioneers did to the next level. While legitimizing fla-

menco with the Spanish establishment, he introduced it and his
virtuoso guitar technique to the world. And if you were attending a Paco de Lucía Sextet concert, you came to hear the guitar,
Paco’s guitar.
He was born Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomes in Algeciras,
a city in the far southern part of Spain in a province considered
the heart of flamenco, Cádiz. Like other boys in Spain at the time,
because there were so many named Paco, he took the name of his
mother Lucía, thus becoming Paco de Lucía. His father was a flamenco guitarist and Paco’s first teacher. At a young age his father
took him out of school so he could study the guitar more, up to 12
hours a day.
At age 11 he made his first public appearance, at 14 he made his
first record with his brother and began touring with the
flamenco troupe of José Greco, a famous Flamenco dancer. Early
albums were traditional Flamenco. But the more he toured and
performed the more he encountered other talented Flamenco
performers. One important encounter and collaboration was
with Camarón de la Isla.
This exposure, along with that of musicians outside the
Flamenco community, would lead to Paco’s contribution to the
New Flamenco style he would bring not only to Flamenco aficionados but to the world. He collaborated with jazz and rock fusion
guitarists John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Larry Coryell and
jazz piano virtuoso Chick Corea. He played with Santana and
formed his own group the Paco de Lucía Sextet. His influence on
Flamenco guitar and the guitar world overall is immeasurable.

five outstanding Minnesota guitarists, each of whom will
bring a unique perspective and expertise to this exciting
and powerful musical form for the classical guitar.
Michael Ziegahn
Michael Ziegahn, “Rafael de Tresa,” has
been playing guitar since graduating from
Highland Park Sr. High. His teachers include
Michael and Tony Hauser, Dan Glass, Paul
Berget, and Pedro Cortes Jr. in Minnesota,
and Luis Maravilla, Antonio Andrade,
and a group class with Manolo Sanlucar in
Spain. He is a class guitarist for Anda Flamenco dance school
and appeared in several productions with them including “Dona
Quixote” and “Senora Butterfly”at the Minnesota Fringe Festival.
He has also worked with local groups Rincón del Flamenco,
Zorongo Flamenco, and his own group Sendero Flamenco with
dancer La Tarara. In 2007 he was the guitarist in the dance theatre
work “Hiroshima—A Night Dreamt and a Day Flashed to Burn”
at Intermedia Arts by choreographer and dancer Sachiko. He is
a past president of the Minnesota Guitar Society and has participated in the previous Flamenco Guitarathons, 2012’s Acoustic
Guitarathon, the Community Concert Series in 2013 and our very
first Guitarathon (the MGS’s first public event!) ....way back when.

Minneapolis. He has also taught flamenco guitar at the St. Paul
Guitar Studio in Lowertown, St. Paul.
Michael Hauser
The son of two artists, sculptor Alonzo
Hauser, and modern dancer Nancy Hauser,
Michael Hauser began his first career with
a degree in forestry, and upon graduating
in 1960, worked in Alaska, and then as a
forester in West Africa, where for two years
he spent time continuing to teach himself
flamenco from phonograph recordings, as he had done throughout college. In 1963, he finally made his way up to Spain, where
he studied intensively for 6 months. Along the way, he hung out
with the Beatles in Madrid, never having heard of them since he
had been in the bush for the previous two years. He even played
and selected a flamenco guitar that George Harrison played in
the movie, “A Hard Day’s Night.” The Beatles then came to the
U.S, and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, in 1964, with Michael
Hauser returning to Minnesota about the same time, introducing flamenco to the Midwest. Since then, Hauser has performed
throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Far East. He has also
toured with his younger brother Tony Hauser, a student of the
great classical master, Andres Segovia, as part of the Michael and
Tony Hauser classical/flamenco Duo. Michael Hauser has also
been guitarist for a number of touring Spanish dance companies,
and was co-founder of the Minneapolis-based Zorongo Flamenco
Dance Theater. He teaches at Macalester College, and continues to
perform.
Michael will be assisted on his performance of Val’s Bulerias
by Matthew Hoerr and Scot Eichorst. Ben Abrahamson
Ben Abrahamson is an active guitarist, composer, and improviser based in the
Twin Cities. His passion for flamenco guitar drove him to Taller de Músics School
of Music in Barcelona, Spain, where he
studied under Juan Ramón Caro. He has
served as guest composer/guitarist with the
Muhlenberg College Theatre & Dance Dept. in Allentown, PA,
and the Macalester College Dance Dept. Ben has shared the stage
with such mentors as flamenco guitarists Michael Hauser and
Pedro Cortés, Jr., dance veterans Susana di Palma and La Conja,
jazz educator Joan Griffith, and music iconoclast Gary Lee Joyner.
Abrahamson performs with groups like Zorongo Flamenco
Dance Theatre, Lulu’s Playground, and the Ben Abrahamson Trio.
He also teaches private guitar lessons at the Linden Hills House
of Music and St. Paul Guitar Studio and group guitar and ukulele
classes at Minneapolis Community & Technical College and the
DVCC Performing Arts Camp in Media, PA.
Daniel Volovets
Daniel Volovets is a guitarist, composer,
arranger, and instructor specializing in
classical, flamenco, Latin American, and
jazz music. Born in the U.S., his repertoire is
influenced by his Russian heritage and his
studies with distinguished Russian classical, Brazilian jazz, and Spanish flamenco
guitar masters. Daniel performs regularly throughout the Twin
Cities through the Minnesota Guitar Society, Zorongo Flamenco
Dance Theatre, 3M, the Cedar Cultural Center, Cargill Inc., and
the Saint Paul Public Library (just to name a few) and at restaurants, weddings, theater productions, private parties, and various
other venues. A notable recent performance was an appearance at
the Dakota Jazz Club as part of a tribute to the recently departed
Paco de Lucía. Daniel has recorded four CDs of arrangements and
original compositions: Watercolors of the World, Silhouette, Rite of
Passage, and Rainy Highway. He is also a recent graduate from the
University of St. Thomas with a B.S. in Neuroscience and aspires
to balance careers in medicine and music.
Trevor May
Trevor May began his studies of flamenco
in Sevilla, Spain right out of high school. For
over 15 years he has been playing around
the Midwest, most notably with Zorongo
Flamenco in the Twin Cities. Studying at
the “Fundación Cristina Heeren de Arte
Flamenco” gave Trevor a pure foundation of
flamenco accompaniment for singing and dance. This passion has
provided him the opportunity to play for many world-class flamenco artists such as the esteemed dancer Manolete. Trevor now
plays with a variety of artists to keep the tradition of flamenco
alive for all audiences.

Baranov is a prizewinner
of more then fifteen prestigious international guitar
competitions, including the
Koblenz Guitar Competition,
Andrés Segovia Competition,
Agustín Barrios Competition,
Robert Vidal Competition,
and Pittaluga Guitar
Competition. At the height of his young career, he won both
the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist
Competition and the Francisco Tárrega Competition in 2013. Sundin Music Hall is on the
Hamline University Campus at
1536 Hewitt Ave. in St. Paul.
Known for his daring interpretation and innovative programming, guitarist and composer Roland Dyens calls him, “a real
musician, one of those rare guitarists who are able to have their
attendees almost forget the instrument they play, managing to
have them focus on the expressivity of the music and only this.” As part of his prize from winning the GFA competition,
Mr. Baranov will embark on a 50-city concert tour throughout the
United States, Mexico, Canada, and Brazil, and has just recorded his first album on the Naxos label. Mr. Baranov has been a
D’Addario artist since 2013. He currently teaches at his alma
mater, the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
Anton Baranov was born in 1984 in the Northwest region
of Russia. He graduated from the famous St. Petersburg State
Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in 2010 under grants from the
Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russian Performing Arts
Foundation. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota
through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the
Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative
appropriation from the arts and
cultural heritage fund.

A Look at the Guitar Foundation of America— byEmilyWright
E
ach year, as part of our season of concerts at Sundin Music
Hall, the Minnesota Guitar Society hosts a recent winner of
a Guitar Foundation of America, (GFA), International Guitar
Competition. The 2013 winner, Anton Baranov, will be performing on December 6. This year, our season will also feature winners
from previous years (Jérémy Jouve, GFA winner from 2003 and
Antigoni Goni, GFA winner from 1995.) We are fortunate to have
such a strong relationship with the GFA, thanks, in no small part,
to our artistic director, Joe Hagedorn, who won their solo competition in 1990. I thought it would be helpful to take a brief look at the
GFA to educate others and myself about their important contribution to the promotion of excellence and professionalism in the
guitar world. Much more information about their work, including
competitions and music is available in their quarterly publication,
Soundboard, and on their website, <www.guitarfoundation.org>.
History
The GFA has a 38-year track record of commitment to the classical guitar community as the pre-eminent non-profit organization dedicated to our instrument in the country. The GFA was
formed in 1973 at the National Guitar Convention sponsored by
the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). It has, since
the 1970’s, published a quarterly journal, Soundboard; established
a large archive of scores, books and manuscripts; hosted annual
