THE ZONE: Thursdays from 6th – 8.30pm MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS GLASGOW 2014 @skysportnz NZ SERIES PREMIERE Set in the near future, this epic drama introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war. Forced to cohabit, the disparate group of human and alien races, known collectively as Votans, struggles to build a new society among the devastation. They eventually settle among the ruins of St Louis, rebuilding a town where humans and aliens can live alongside each other. At the centre of this world is roguish Nolan (played by Kiwi star Grant Bowler) and his adopted alien daughter Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), who takes over as sheriff of Defiance and enlists the help of deputies, and occasionally some civilians. They all work together to maintain law and order in the town and region, with the help of inexperienced mayor Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz), powerful businessman Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene) and aristocratic Castithan immigrant Datak Tarr (Tony Curran). Meanwhile, a group of high-profile residents conspires against factions seeking to make Defiance a safe and successful town. To survive in this unforgiving landscape, it will take strength. It will take will. It will take defiance. Created by Rockne S O’Bannon (Farscape), and with music from Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica), Defiance is a true science-fiction series from some of the genre’s most talented writers. THE ZONE: Tuesdays from 4th – 9.30pm win the world cup so it is important that our big names stand up and show that they can match it with the very best. “I always want to see Brendon McCullum performing because he can be such a genuine match-winner.” Martin Guptill and Jesse Ryder have been the regular openers for the BLACKCAPS in the past few ODI series but Ryder fell foul of the selectors after the Indian series and may struggle to be selected. “The opening partnership is an area that needs to be addressed. I’m not sure it is a certainty around who will actually open the batting,” says Richardson. Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi has been used to open innings in the shortened forms of the game, while youngster Tom Latham is another likely option after some good form in the test tour of the West Indies in June. Richardson says he likes what he sees in Latham. “He is someone I have a big rap on. I think he can be a classy opener in all forms of the game. I’d like to see them give him a decent shot to cement himself in the role.” Also returning this summer will be the popular Tui Catch-A-Million promotion where fans can be in to win if they catch a six one-handed on the full on TV while wearing an orange Tui shirt. “The crowd really got into it last year and it adds an extra dimension of entertainment,” says Richardson. NZ SERIES PREMIERE SKYWATCH 13 SALMON BAGELS WITH ZINGY HERB CREAM Summer comes early for cricket fans this year. With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 looming large in the new year, world cricket’s powerhouse nations are frantically putting together their final preparations before the sport’s ultimate prize goes up for grabs. With the tournament being co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia, the BLACKCAPS will have no shortage of opponents this season as sides seek to sample the Kiwi pitches they will encounter next February and March. The first of no less than three international ODI series to be hosted by Brendon McCullum’s side features South Africa, who arrive for three matches late this month. “There is no doubt that these are warm-up games to kick off the world cup campaign,” says SKY Sport cricket commentator Mark Richardson. “These are games to help prepare. “But a lot can happen before the world cup,” adds the former BLACKCAP. Richardson sees the series as the first chance to settle on the line-up and style that can carry the side through the summer. “It is important to go in with the players that they think will be there later in the year. They need to start how they intend to finish in the sense that they don’t want to be searching for answers closer to the tournament.” New Zealand closed last summer with an impressive series win against India and want to pick up where they left off. Batsmen McCullum, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson have developed a real consistency in their scoring, while the bowling unit has been well led by young seamers Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Richardson says it is vitally important the leading players fire for the BLACKCAPS in home conditions. “South Africa are a real favourite to Developed by Ronald D Moore, this sci-fi thriller follows a group of scientists deployed to a research facility in the Arctic to investigate a potential virus outbreak.
