CHURCH SERVICE,
LUCIA PAGEANT
AND ADVENTS-FEST
SUNDAY DECEMBER 7th at 4:30pm
Come and be part of our celebration the second Sunday in Advent. During the
church service two candles will be lit in the advent wreath and the young people
will arrive, singing carols and carrying stars or candles. This Sunday helps pave
the way for the Christmas season ahead. We hope to see many former participants in our pageants through the years, and if you were lucky enough to get a
pendant designed by Malmholt do remember to wear it. Following the service
we will go downstairs to enjoy the advent wreaths, lots of “hygge” and something
to eat. As has become tradition, we ask parents and other good cooks to sign up
beforehand for bringing frikadeller or potato salad or rødkål or a layer cake.
We look forward to sharing this special day with you!

CHILDREN’S HOUR
A small group of children started in September or October where we continued
to study the parables.
On Thanksgiving Sunday the children could list many reasons for being thankful to God and followed up by making decorations for the Thanksgiving tables.
All are looking forward to seeing many friends in November for Children’s
Hour. Several teens have volunteered to help out during this busy time. We
look forward to once again sharing the wonderful story of the birth of Jesus.

PASTOR’S
WIFE’s
I have just been checking my
calendar. I was sure, some months
must have been forgotten somewhere. It can’t be true that a year has
already passed since the last time I
wrote to you in “Pastor’s Wife’s
Corner.” But it is, there is no two
ways about it, we’ve already been in
Canada now for almost one and a
half years. We’re in the middle of
experiencing our second Fall, and it
won’t be long before we’ll be celebrating our second Christmas in the
rectory on Finch Avenue. And what a
Christmas the first one was! I had
barely written Happy Holidays for all
of you before the world suddenly got
covered in centimeters of solid ice,
putting a stop to just about everything. We were some of the lucky
ones that were only without power
for about a day, but I talked to a lot
of you who were without power for
days, some even a week or more. For
a lot of you it meant changing plans
for Christmas, spending Christmas at
different locations or with other
people. For some it even meant
spending Christmas alone, because it
wasn’t possible to go where you were
supposed to be. Now so many
months late, we can think back on it
and say “it was a very memorable
Christmas” – something that stands
out because we had to do something
other than usual.
Well even though it seemed like it
lasted forever at the time, time
passed and so did the ice storm. It
left room for a long and very cold
winter. For four months we didn’t see
CORNER
anything resembling grass in our
backyard and Kenneth and I had to
dig tunnels for the dogs in the snow,
so they were able to go outside.
I remember when March came, I
thought, now it won’t last much
longer! But I was wrong. When my
parents came at end of April the last
snow had just melted from a snow
storm we had in the middle of April.
And when we went to see the Niagara
Falls, the falls were still half frozen! It
seemed incredible! We’ve been told
that not all winters are like this, but
this year we have chopped wood in
the garage, warm down jackets and
long underpants – so we’re prepared!
10
When the winter finally gave up its
grip, along came the most beautiful
spring. Never have I seen the rectory
look more wonderful than when the
Magnolia bloomed in May.
all: Even the warmest month in Denmark – July - was half a degree colder
than the same month here. And we
did have warm days here, I know,
because I got a sun burn when I visited the Toronto Islands for the first
time with my brother and his family
in the beginning of July. Later my
sister and her fiancé came, which
meant another trip to Niagara Fall,
this time beautifully decorated with
two rainbows! In August we had our
summer vacation and saw a different
part of Canada – Quebec. Kenneth
has already told you about some of
our wonderful experiences there.
Then without any warning September knocked on the door again. The
church awoke from its summer slumber with a nice welcome back fest in
the beginning of the month. We had
more visitors – my father and his wife
came to see us and Toronto. That
meant of course another trip for me
to the falls. This time covered in
mist, so that we had to stand under
umbrellas though it didn’t rain. As we
did last year with Kenneth’s parents
we went up north to Algonquin Park
to enjoy the spectacular Fall colors. I
remember feeling blown away last
year, and in spite of knowing what to
expect, I was just as amazed this year.
The colors almost burn in your eyes,
because they are so amazingly bright.
I understand why Fall is a rather big
deal in Canada – and it has changed
my mind about this season. In Denmark Fall was only good because I
have my birthday in that season. Otherwise I always found it sad with all
its brown and gray colors. In Canada
it is my favorite season because it is
so spectacularly colorful, almost
more than spring!
May also brought more visitors,
friends from Denmark, which meant
another trip to Niagara Falls. It was
not even one month later, but that
day we had 29 degrees and sunshine.
I remember the day very clearly because the falls seemed especially
clear and because it was the day I
found out I am pregnant. I think
most of you know by now, that Kenneth and I are expecting a little girl in
the middle of January, and we’re
both very happy.
The beginning of June I spent in
Denmark eating Danish strawberries.
As you know they have had the
warmest summer in Denmark for
years. Some of us might have been a
bit jealous since the summer here has
been a bit colder than usual (or so
we’re told). But I can reassure you
11
And with the coming of Fall we have
turned a full calendar year. As you
can tell – I’ve spent a lot of my time
at Niagara Falls – five visits in a year,
and every time a new experience!
But that does not mean I haven’t had
time for all the usual and joyous activities in the church, such as Church
Café, Golden Age Club, the choir,
and of course Sunday services. For
those of you who remember what I
told you last year about not yet having won one single game of cards in
church café, I can now inform you
that it took me nine months before I
won one! Well, says the eternal optimist, I’m sure my luck will be better
this year.
Apart from all the everyday activities,
we also have our special occasions
with which we celebrate the different
seasons. Right now apples are boiling
on my stove for æblekage for the
Thanksgiving Dinner in the church.
Thanksgiving is a new holiday for us,
but we have already embraced it with
all its wonderful family and food traditions. And I know from experience
that as soon as Thanksgiving is over,
we’ll start preparing for the Christmas
Bazar again. I will be at the Danish
goods booth selling Danish china as
usual, and I can’t wait to meet a lot of
you there. Then it won’t be long before rice is boiling on the stove for
risengrød, and we will chance the
house decoration so that nisser can
take their usual places on mantelpieces and bookshelves. In church there
will be Lucia again with all the children singing, and then there will of
course be Christmas services on both
the 24th and the 25th. Those are all
activities I look forward to enjoying
with you!
For us this has been a most amazing
year and we are very grateful to have
spent it here with you. I hope to see a
lot of you in the year to come, and to
introduce our newest family member
to all the people that is our church.
So from both Kenneth and me: Merry Merry Christmas to all of you, and
may you all have a wonderful new
year!
Mette
Julen har bragt velsignet bud.
Nu glædes gamle og unge:
Hvad englene sang i verden ud,
nu alle små børn skal sjunge.
Grenen fra livets træ står skønt
med lys som fugle på kviste.
Det barn som sig glæder fromt og kønt,
skal aldrig den glæde miste.
12
Frelseren selv var barn som vi,
i dag han lå i sin vugge.
Den have, Guds engle flyve i,
vil Jesus for os oplukke.
Himmerigs konge blandt os bor,
han juleglæden os bringer,
han favner hver barnesjæl på jord
og lover os englevinger.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is amazing how fast time seems to
go by, especially when looking back.
Not long ago we were enjoying the
summer, and somehow the fall and
its wonderful colours have also come
and mostly gone. Now here we are
looking at the last two months of the
year – and then we start all over again
once more. Somehow those birthday
candles just won’t stop increasing in
number. But as long as we stay
“young at heart” then at least we
might be able to ignore some of
those candles. In November our congregation will be 57 years “young”.
That is not particularly old, especially
for a church, but I feel it is a testament to our founding members who
gave us the means and inspiration to
enjoy the benefits of this church, and
to those of us who now participate
and support and carry on those ideals
so that we can continue to share,
help, and enjoy these benefits. We
are a church and welcome all who
join us for Sunday services. We are
also a cultural center where we continue our rich Danish traditions, and
a meeting place for our members as
well as the community at large. We
should all be proud and grateful for
what we have, and do our best to
keep it available for the future. Happy Birthday to us - the Danish Lutheran Church of Toronto.
All our activity groups are back in full
swing with all their various events.
Make sure you check the almanac or
website for specific details. In September we enjoyed a pleasant Welcome Back Fest with a Danish buffet
and lots of singing. Pastor Kenneth
has had a good response to his study
group, and is also busy with confir-
mation classes. In October our
Thanksgiving Dinner was another
successful evening with great food,
wonderful entertainment, and even a
refreshingly different and exciting
guest speaker. That will be a tough
act to follow no doubt. We also had a
dedicated group at our fall clean-up
day. Many thanks to all who helped
make our church a cleaner and happier place - both inside and out. And
finally we close out that month with a
special family service with lots of fun,
music, and all sorts of costumes.
The next two months will be very
busy. Many people have already been
making various preparations for the
upcoming fall/Christmas bazaar. We
are all aware of the importance and
popularity of this event, and hope
that you will continue to support it.
Tickets for the Fall Lottery have already been sent out and the winners
will be drawn that day. December is a
time for celebration of many events
at our church with family and friends.
Our Lucia Pageant starts it off with a
lovely candlelight service followed by
a reception in the Royal Hall. This
year we have a special “julefrokost” at
Madsen’s greenhouses in Newmarket. This event promises to be
unique complete with great food and
entertainment. Next we have our
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
services, always special for many of
us. And finally we close out the year
with our Nativity Play and Children’s
Christmas Party.
13
Registration forms for our 2015
membership drive have also been
distributed. This is particularly important this year as we will soon present the proposed incorporation plan
complete with new bylaws at an extraordinary members meeting. You
need to be a registered voting member to have your vote count at this
and the next annual general meeting.
More details will follow later, but it is
better to be registered early to make
sure you are able to participate.
Please see notes on all the above
events elsewhere in this newsletter.
As always we encourage people to
participate in our activities and in
particular our Sunday services. All
are welcome to share in the benefits
of our wonderful church. Best wishes
for a joyful Christmas season.

MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION
It is time for our 2015 membership drive. The annual membership registration
form was sent out earlier with the lottery tickets. More forms are available at the
church if needed. Please take this opportunity to update any needed address
changes or corrections, or to sign up as a voting member by paying the $15.00
levy. This is also an opportunity to make a donation to the church, as we are
fully self-funded and rely on our gracious donors.
Please remember that the $15.00 levy per voting member has to be paid by
December 1st to ensure voting rights at the next AGM in March 2015, as well at
an extraordinary members meeting soon to be called to review the proposed
incorporation and new bylaws for our church.
Feel free to speak to any Board member if further information is required.
A BIG THANK YOU
TO THE FALL CLEAN-UP CREW !!
On Saturday October 4th a group of approximately 20 people met at the church
in the morning, had a cup of coffee, rolled back their sleeves and went to work!
This was the Fall clean-up day, and everybody was ready
to help make the church more neat, clean and tidy, inside
and out.
It is a lot of work, but there is
always enough for everybody to do,
no matter what kind of work you
prefer - and you can really tell the
difference. Well done everybody !
Is it a bird ... A plane ??
No, it is Johannes!!
THANK YOU!!

FOLKDANCING
FALL FUN & FITNESS !!
The summer that never was, is behind us. Fall is here and the trees
have provided their usual colorful splendor before the dreaded start of “W”.
What better time to join an indoor activity involving good fun, exercise and music. Lis will provide the instructions and music for a variety of old and new traditional Danish dances, while Laine is away. Why not come and see what we are
all about, we would enjoy having you being part of our group.
We meet right here at the Church, downstairs, in the “Royal Hall” on Fridays
from 7:30pm to 10 pm. And yes, we do stop for a coffee break.
Look for the dates in the almanac or on the church website:
www.dlctoronto.on.ca.
Beginners are always welcome; all you have to do is come to the church downstairs, in the Royal hall for our next dance nights; Friday November 7th and 21st,
and December 5th and 12th at 7:30pm.

FROM THE CHOIR
The Choir is busy again - soon preparing for Christmas.
We have so much beautiful Christmas music to pick from - both from Denmark
and the English speaking countries. And we look very much forward to singing
all the well known classics - it puts you right in the mood, gives you warmth and
lifts the spirit in the darker and colder months that are soon to come.
Is anyone interested in helping us for Christmas? We could use more voices in
the month of December to help us make advent and Christmas sound even
sweeter.
We usually meet every Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm for rehearsals – but
Rikke is willing to rehearse with new voices at other times, if we can gather a
little group. Tuesday afternoons right after Church Café, or maybe Sundays after
service, when people are already at church?
Contact: Rikke Krabbenhoft - 647 887 9434
SUNDAY COFFEE !
On Sundays we are all looking forward to that cup of coffee after the service, a sandwich, a chat with old acquaintances and a chance to make new friends. The Board
would like to thank everybody for coming, and for making those special moments
happen! We are always looking for people to make the coffee and the sandwiches,
so if you would like to help out please sign up on the list in the Royal Hall. If you
need a hand, or if you have any questions, please contact any Board Member and
someone will be happy to help you. Your help is always very much appreciated!

GREETINGS FROM KIRSTEN OG JØRGEN
Kirsten og Jørgen Flensted-Jensen
September 2014
Most of you probably still remember Kirsten and
Jørgen, who were the pastor couple in Grimsby
until 2010.
Your “Kirkehilsen Correspondent” recently
visited Kirsten og Jørgen, and you will be pleased
to hear that they are happy and healthy, living in
Fyn, Denmark, where Jørgen is temporarily
serving as a full-time Pastor. Jørgen is busy getting
a class of 30+ confirmants ready for their big day,
and Kirsten is volunteering at a nursing home among many other things.
Upcoming adventures include a trip to Ethiopia, where they will get together
with friends and colleagues from the time when they lived and worked there in
development projects.
Kirsten og Jørgen are sending their warmest wishes to the congregation in
Toronto. And we, in return, hope they will pay us a visit some time soon!
NEWS FROM DANSKSKOLEN
The Danish school has begun its 2014/2015 year! This year we are fortunate to
have an additional Danish teacher, Lena Maul, to assist Karin in teaching our
group of children. Classes run eleven Saturdays though the school year, from
10:00am to 12.30pm. New students are always welcome. The next classes are
November 1st, November 22nd and December 6th. Keep up to date by visiting
our website: www.simplesite.com/dkskolen.
We are so exited about this year and looking forward to learning lots of Danish

Tickets are $4.50 each, or a book of 6 for $25.00, and have been mailed out
with a stamped self-addressed envelope. Additional tickets are available at the
church. The ticket stubs with payment must be received at the church prior to
the draw. They can also be purchased at the bazaar right up until draw time.
Try your luck at being a winner, and help support the church at the same time
by purchasing these lottery tickets.
Please join us for the draw and participate in the Bazaar as well.

GREETINGS FROM SUNSET VILLA
It is always a busy time here at Sunset Villa, and we have several events coming
up in the next couple of months. First we have the Duck Bingo on the 23rd of
November. Have you ever been to one? It is a lot of fun bingo with a few nice
prizes. What about a duck for Christmas? We have several on the “menu” too,
come join us, let the restaurant know you are coming, or call me.
Then we have the big annual Christmas Bazaar on the weekend of November
29th and 30th. That is one crazy event - last year we had a line-up at the door,
knocking on it for us to open. The Sunshine Ladies can’t make enough Nisser,
they just seem to fly off the shelves with supernatural speed. Come see what it is
all about, have a cup of coffee or a nice lunch.
Then of course there is the Children’s Christmas party on the 7th of December.
We are doing it a bit differently this year: You will have to call or send an email
with your details, then pay at the door - but you will have to do that before the
23rd of November, or your kids will miss out on all the fun.
For all the details please go to our website at www.sunsetvilla.ca
I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Glædelig Jul og Godt Nytår
from us all in Puslinch. We hope to see you at one of our events and of course
in the new year.
Karin Thorlund Larsen
