Add more Vegetables to your Day
It’s easy to eat more vegetables! Eating vegetables is important because they provide vitamins and minerals
and most are low in calories. To fit more vegetables in your meals, follow these simple tips. It is easier than you
may think.
1. Discover fast ways to cook. Cook fresh or frozen vegetables in the microwave for a quick-and-easy dish to
add to any meal. Steam green beans, carrots, or broccoli in a bowl with a small amount of water in the microwave for a quick side dish.
2. Be ahead of the game. Cut up a batch of bell peppers, carrots, or broccoli. Pre-package them to use when
time is limited. You can enjoy them on a salad, with hummus, or in a veggie wrap.
3. Choose vegetables rich in color. Brighten your plate with vegetables that are red, orange, or dark green.
They are full of vitamins and minerals. Try acorn squash, cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes, or collard greens.
They not only taste great but also are good for you, too.
4. Check the freezer aisle. Frozen vegetables are quick and easy to use and are just as nutritious as fresh veggies. Try adding frozen corn, peas, green beans, spinach, or sugar snap peas to some of your favorite dishes or
eat as a side dish.
5. Stock up on veggies. Canned vegetables are a great addition to any meal, so keep on hand canned tomatoes, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, mushrooms, and beets. Select those labeled as “reduced sodium,” “low
sodium,” or “no salt added.”
6. Make your garden salad glow with color. Brighten your salad by using colorful vegetables such as black
beans, sliced red bell peppers, shredded radishes, chopped red cabbage, or water cress. Your salad will not only look good but taste good, too.
7. Sip on some vegetable soup. Heat it and eat it. Try tomato, butternut squash, or garden vegetable soup.
Look for reduced- or low-sodium soups.
8. While you’re out. If dinner is away from home, no need to worry. When ordering, ask for an extra side of
vegetables or side salad instead of the typical fried side dish.
9. Savor the flavor of seasonal vegetables. Buy vegetables that are in season for maximum flavor at a lower
cost. Check your local supermarket specials for the best-in-season buys. Or visit your local farmer’s market.
10. Try something new. You never know what you may like. Choose a new vegetable- add it to your recipe or
look up how to fix it online.

ART news...from Mrs. Verbic
Galloway artists have become masters at "tricking" the eyes that examine our art work by practicing
techniques in proportion (or for first grade, purrrrr-portion), scale and point of view. Have you ever
thought why artists might draw some objects smaller/larger than others? Or, for example, why airplanes
look so small in the sky?
Both first and second grade artists have learned the secret of wax resists with fall landscapes and feline
portraits. Kindergarten artists just completed a mixed-media project (paint, pastel and collage), and are
gearing up for a special 3D creation.
Please be sure to visit the art room Friday, November 7 during morning conferences to
work on a community quilt project!
There are so many wonderful things happening here at Galloway School and our staff is a huge part of that. We
would like to recognize their efforts with your help. Each month we will ask parents if they would like to nominate a staff member for going above and beyond in their role as a part of N.B. Galloway. All you have to do is write one to two sentences as to
why you want this staff member to be recognized. It can be any staff member from the wonderful secretaries to Mr. Jim, our custodian to your child's present teacher or even a teacher that your child does not have but that you have had a positive experience
with. The nomination can be that someone smiled at you and made you feel comfortable at Galloway or it can include something
someone did over a period of time. It's up to you! At the beginning of each month we will have a random drawing from the nominations and the staff member chosen will be showcased on the bulletin board by the entrance to the office. We will also recognize
the staff member in the Thursday note and include all other honorable nominations.
If you would like to nominate a staff member for the month of December please email Miss Santor at
[email protected] by November 24th with the name of the staff member and 1-2 sentences as to why you would like to nominate
the person as staff member of the month. Thank you!!

Whether your child is bullied or not, this is a great program that helps us teach our children
how to develop confidence and nurture interactive social skills.
How do I know if Bullies 2 Buddies is right for my child? Ask yourself the following questions:
I want my children/students to grow up into adults who:
A. Blame others for their feelings and problems.
B. Take personal responsibility for their feelings and problems.
I want my children/students to:
A. Demand to be treated like they are perfect, and to get upset whenever someone
criticizes them or poke fun at them.
B. Know they are not perfect, to be able to handle criticism, and to be able to take
and make jokes about themselves.
I want my children/students to develop resilience and assertive skills so they can handle
the hardships of life:
A. No.
B. Yes.
If you prefer “B” responses, you are likely to be happy with the Bullies 2 Buddies approach.
It will teach your children how to problem solve conflicts so they can grow in resilience, self
-confidence and self-esteem.
Next week: Tips on how to help your child with relational aggression.

HONORING VETERANS
N.B. Galloway School will honor Veterans Day and the men and women who have died defending our country by raising funds for
military veterans and their families.
On November 11, teachers will take part in the 2014 “Jeans For Troops” fundraising drive benefiting the GI Go Fund, a nonprofit
organization that helps veterans returning home find employment, go to college, access their health care and financial benefits, and
link to housing.
During the drive, which has schools and companies from all across the country participating, Galloway School will give their employees the opportunity to wear jeans to work in exchange for a $5 donation to the GI Go Fund. Students are also invited to participate should you wish to make a $1 donation to this worthy organization.
“For generations, America’s teachers have been responsible for educating America’s children,” said GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous. “They have always been individuals that mothers and fathers could rely on to set a positive example for their children. This Veterans Day, teachers around the country have set the example to our nation’s children that this is a day to remember
the men and women who fought to preserve our liberties, our freedoms, and the American way of life.”
The GI Go Fund is an organization on the cutting edge of offering support to veterans, providing veterans with innovative ways of
finding employment, securing their educational and health benefits, as well as providing aid and assistance to low income and
homeless veterans. Since their founding, the organization has helped tens of thousands of veterans improve their lives and give
them the capacity to provide and care for their loved ones.
In addition, the organization did tremendous work in 2014 helping veterans obtain greater access to health care services, working
with members of Congress in the wake of the VA scandal to implement legislation that gives veterans the ability to use their VA
benefits to receive private health care.
Proceeds from this program will go to help the organization further its mission for veterans. The organization is currently looking to
provide veterans with the tools and resources they need to find a steady job, from providing veterans with career mentorship to
helping them access job training resources that will help them find employment with companies looking to hire veterans.
For more information about the GI Go Fund, or to see all the schools and business that are participating in the “Jeans for Troops”
drive, visit www.gigofund.org.
