Speciality Papers and end uses of each variety
Chief Editor
Ghias Ahmad Peerzada
Security paper is a paper that incorporates features that can act to identify or
authenticate a document as original, e.g. watermarks or invisible fibres in paper, or
features that demonstrate tamper evidence when fraud is attempted, e.g., to remove or
alter print such as amounts or signatures on a cheque. Examples of this kind of papers
are those used for identification such as passports and certificates, such as birth
certificates and different types of academic and qualification certificates, as well as
government documents, e.g. voting ballots and tax strips.
Pakistan is self sufficient in printing of currency notes, Government Security Bonds,
Passports, Postage Stamps and similar security printing products. We also meet our
requirements for the security paper for currency notes and other related paper.
However, we import security paper for private sector mainly CBS1 Cheque Paper.
We can meet the requirement of printing of Cheques for the country having latest
printing and finishing machinery. The State Bank of Pakistan has restricted the usage
and import of security paper import by private sector. Government authorization is
required to import Security Paper. State Bank has imposed strict measures for the
specification of CBS1 Cheque Paper. The features required in production of paper
must be met with that specified by the State Bank of Pakistan to avoid forfeit.
A hologram may be embedded either via hot-stamping foil, wherein an extremely
thin layer of only a few micrometers of depth is bonded into the paper or a plastic
substrate by means of a hot-melt adhesive (called a size coat) and heat from a metal
die, or it may be directly embossed as holographic paper, or onto the laminate of a card
itself. When incorporated with a custom design pattern or logo, hologram hot stamping
foils become security foils that protect credit cards, passports, bank notes and value
documents from counterfeiting. Holograms help in curtailing forging, duplication and
piracy of products hence are very essential for security purposes. Once stamped on a
product, they cannot be removed or forged, enhancing the product at the same time.
Also from a security perspective, if stamped, a hologram is a superior security device
as it is virtually impossible to remove from its substrate.
Holograms market in Pakistan has much potential for investment as there are very
few manufacturing units. Mostly Holographic Films are being imported in Pakistan.
Holographic film specially developed for newly designed Pakistan National Identity
Cards.
RFID – Radio Frequency Identification is not much familiar to this market require
huge potential for investments. NADRA has adopted latest technology and machine
readable passports are the best example where much work has been done. NADRA
has also developed the multiple-pronged “e-Vehicle Management” system that uses
Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology to identify vehicles
approaching ‘manned’ & ‘unmanned’ Check-Posts at entry/exit with real-time
monitoring at the central control room. NADRA has also developed an RFID based
Driver’s License that bears a license holder's unique, personal information as well as
stores data regarding traffic violations and tickets issued / outstanding penalties. Data
is stored in two halves of the chip. One half contains the personal information of the
license holder and cannot be changed or modified. The second half is re-writable,
where history of violations can be recorded. Similarly NADRA has developed money
transfer (easy paisa, telenor easy paisa and branchless banking system), toll-tax (epass), e-Sahulat (to print electricity bills), car registration and many more RFID based
products.
The growth rate for hologram and RFID tags usage are not much more and there
is the need to promote awareness among the people for its importance. Multi-national
companies know its importance and using the products. Seminars, workshops and
publicity campaign can help for the promotion of holograms and RFID usages.

they print tea bag tags, labels

sees them install their fifth
Edale FL-1 press in under
three years.
After the initial press
purchase; 2012 saw Mr Mai

presses with
2014 seeing
him purchase
his fourth and
fifth. Mr Mai
says
“We
initially chose
an Edale FL-1
because of its
v e r s a t i l i t y,
and
the
capability to
adapt to our
width of paper
band.
Our
jobs need versatile, compact
machines, as we print a lot of
different tags in short runs”,
he continues “as our business
has continued to grow, the
FL-1’s have proved ideal;
great quality print and wellengineered presses.”
The presses which stand
at a compact 2.5m2, are all of
the same spec – four colour
with water based drying, and
a unique 1.2m freestanding
unwind.

The first

other four ROLAND 700
