Market Commentary
1-Day Commodity Moves (%)
Gold edged higher overnight to open the day at 1162.00/1163.00.
It advanced shortly after U.S. data showed an increase in the
number of initial jobless claims. The metal then declined to a low
of 1160.50/1161.50 before rebounding to a high of
1167.75/1168.75 on dollar weakness as crude oil prices fell to a
new 4-year low following weak Chinese data showed a drop in
factory output. Gold pulled back towards the end of the day to
close relatively flat at 1161.75/1162.75.
Silver moved slightly higher overnight, opening the session at
15.70/15.75. Shortly after the open, it touched a high of
15.79/15.84 before retreating to a low of 15.61/15.66, prior to
concluding the session at 15.63/15.68.

Technical Commentary

Gold has closed at 1162.25, forming its second consecutive doji in
a sign of continued uncertainty. The recent consolidation has
centered around the 9 day MA (1159), and has occurred alongside
a moderation in bearish momentum indicators. We continue to
look for a break of Friday’s candle, with a real body between 1142
and 1178 encapsulating the recent range.
Silver has closed at 15.66, unchanged from Wednesday at the
mid-point of a four-session range bound between 15.47 and 15.90.
Closing resistance continues to be observed at the 9 day MA
(15.70), and we look to potential support around the November
7th open of 15.41. Momentum indicators are bearish; however,
they have moderated from the oversold levels observed last week.

The gold-silver ratio is up modestly, rising from Wednesday’s doji
suggesting upside risk following the consolidation. However, we
note the intraday break below the 9 day MA and highlight that
momentum indicators have moderated from their recent
overbought levels. We focus on the recent multi-year high near
74.70, as well as expected support around 74.00.
