Automakers sold 154,949 cars and trucks in October, a 6.5-percent increase from 145,460 a year ago, according to data compiled by industry analyst DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, which called the results "stunning." "Yet another huge month for light vehicle sales in Canada and for the second month in a row a (seasonally adjusted annual rate) tracking above two million units," Des-Rosiers wrote in a note to clients. Light truck sales were up 10.7 per cent, to 90,009, compared with 81,292 a year ago, while passenger car sales grew 1.2 per cent, to 64,940, compared with 64,168 in October 2013. Light trucks accounted for 58 per cent of sales, which should continue to rise with declining fuel prices, DesRosiers reported. Year-to-date sales totalled nearly 1.58 million, up 5.6 per cent from nearly 1.50 million in the first 10 months of 2013. Sales from the Detroit Three automakers increased 8.3 per cent, to about 66,200, while imports were up 5.3 per cent to 88,740. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors were almost even in October sales, but a 23-per-cent surge caused Chrysler to inch ahead of its rivals. Ford was No. 2 for the month, as its sales decreased 2.6 per cent, to 22,055 vehicles, while General Motors was third in October as its sales grew 7.3 per cent to 22,002. In October, Chrysler Canada's sales jumped on stronger demand for its Jeep SUVs and Ram pickup trucks. The automaker said it sold 22,303 vehicles last month, up from 18,131 a year earlier. Car sales totalled 3,414, up from 2,546 a year ago, while truck sales increased to 18,889 from 15,585. Chrysler said it is having the best sales in its 89-year history. "2014 is shaping up to be a historic year for Chrysler Canada," stated Chrysler chief operating officer David Buckingham. GM's sales increased seven per cent from 20,503 a year ago, as its Chevrolet, Buick and GMC brands all saw growth. Car sales increased more than nine per cent, to 6,742 from 6,169, while truck sales were up 6.5 per cent, to 15,260 vehicles from 14,334. Ford sales for October were down from 22,647 a year ago, as it reported its truck sales slipped 1.1 per cent to 18,026 from 18,219. Ford car sales fell nine per cent to 4,029 from 4,428 in October 2013. Toyota Canada said its sales grew 2.2 per cent, as it sold 17,977 vehicles under its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands to mark its second-best October. Nissan said it posted record sales in October, rising 9.6 per cent to 9,286 vehicles, as a 22.5 per cent increase in trucks offset a 1.7 per cent decrease in cars. Nissan-branded trucks cars and trucks grew a combined 7.6 per cent to 8,282 while luxury Infiniti sales surged nearly 30 per cent to 1,004. Not all car companies had stronger results. BMW, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volkswagen were all down in October compared with a year ago. Among the lower-selling brands, Mini sales increased 55 per cent and Acura was up 42 per cent. © 2014 Postmedia Network Inc. All rights reserved. Source: The Associated Press general motors noted on Wed Nov 12 2014 5:52 am Also in Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, Windsor Star, New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, Financial Post Business. ET It's Ford Motor Co.'s biggest bet in decades: an aluminum-sided F-150 that could set a new industry standard or cost the company its pickup truck crown. Ford started production of the 2015 F-150 Tuesday at its Dearborn Truck Plant, four miles from the company's headquarters. It will arrive at U.S. dealerships next month. Ford thinks a truck that is lighter and more fuel efficient, but even more capable, will win buyers while its competitors struggle to catch up. Aluminum - which is lighter than steel but just as strong - isn't new to the auto industry, but this is the first time it will cover the entire body of such a high-volume vehicle. Ford made 647,697 F-150 pickups at its two U.S. plants last year; that's one every 49 seconds. There are big risks. F-Series trucks have been the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. for 37 straight years; last year, Ford sold nearly 100,000 more full -size pickups than General Motors Co. Any quality problems, production hiccups or customer doubts about aluminum could slow sales and hurt Ford's bottom line. Morgan Stanley estimates F-Series trucks account for 90% of Ford's global automotive profit. Chief executive Mark Fields told The Associated Press he is confident Ford made the right decision. The new truck has been through 10 million miles of testing, which is more than any other vehicle in Ford's history, he said. Top managers agreed unanimously to switch to aluminum at a meeting in 2012. "Were we recognizing that it was a risk? Sure," Mr. Fields said. "But it was a very calculated and informed risk that gave us the confidence that we were going to get this done." If Ford's bet pays off, it could gain an even more commanding lead in the lucrative truck market. More importantly, aluminum "future proofs" the truck - and the company - in an era of rising fuel economy standards, said Karl Brauer, a senior analyst with Kelley Blue Book. "If Ford masters the art of delivering an aluminum vehicle at the level the F-150 sells, they are going to be able to expand that to Mustangs, Edges and Lincolns," Mr. Brauer said. Truck buyers are among the most loyal in the auto market, and Ford can count on many of them. The company said more than 224,600 potential buyers have already asked for more details about the truck. But even some Ford loyalists have their doubts. Ginny Pruet, who runs a wedding rental business in Rockwall, Tex., recently traded her 2012 F-150 for the 2014 version because she wanted a backup camera. Ms. Pruet checked out the 2015 version at auto shows. She is impressed by the new truck's bells and whistles. But she's concerned that aluminum is untested and not worth the extra cost. Ford has raised the price of the base model by US$395 to US$26,615, including destination fees. A fancier King Ranch version costs US$3,615 more. Ford's promise of better fuel economy also failed to sway Ms. Pruet, who is paying less than US$3 a gallon for gasoline in her area. Fuel economy numbers won't be released until later this month, but Ford has said the 2015 truck will have up to 20% better fuel economy than the outgoing model, which gets up to 23 mpg on the highway. Ford has the disadvantage of introducing the truck as gas prices are hitting a four-year low. But Mr. Fields said even when gas prices were US$1.25, truck buyers still asked for better fuel economy. "These vehicles are not just vehicles to our customers. They're tools to help them do their job," Mr. Fields said. "This thing has to deliver." Ford is spending more than US$1-billion to retrofit its plants in Dearborn and Claycomo, Mo. where the trucks are assembled, as well as the metal stamping plants that make the parts, said Bruce Hettle, Ford's vicepresident of manufacturing, who spent three years planning the changeover. Ford also helped dealers with the US$30,000-to-US$50,000 cost to retrofit their repair shops, said spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt. Around 700 of the company's 1,500 dealers who do collision repairs have gone through company training on aluminum, along with 700 independent repair shops. Russell Barnett updated the repair shop at his Ford dealership in Winchester, Tenn. Mr. Barnett figures that in three-to-four years other brands will be adopting the same technology, so the investment will pay for itself. Jason Cannon doesn't haul much more than an occasional Christmas tree in his 2006 F-150. But Mr. Cannon, a writer who lives in Demopolis, Ala., said he wouldn't drive anything else. Mr. Cannon's only wish is that he got better fuel economy than the 15-to-16 mpg he averages around town. That's why he's eyeing the 2015 F-150. Mr. Cannon said he wouldn't hesitate to buy aluminum. "This is an F-150. The technology is proven," he said. "This is the same song, just a different verse." © 2014 Postmedia Network Inc. All rights reserved. Edition: National Story Type: News Length: 802 words Return to top Ford fires up production of aluminum-body F-150; Company's topselling model sheds some weight but gets a little more expensive Toronto Star Wed Nov 12 2014 Page: S9 Section: Business Byline: Madeline O'Leary and Keith Naughton Bloomberg At Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge factory, where Henry Ford began building Model A cars almost 90 years ago, the automaker Tuesday officially began manufacturing an advanced, aluminum-bodied F-150 pickup, its top selling and most profitable model. Much like Henry Ford's changeover from the Model T to the Model A in 1928, the birth of the 2015 F-150 has been painful, costing the company sales and profits this year as it closed the Rouge and a plant near Kansas City, Mo., to install new tools and machinery to prepare for the largest production ever of an aluminum-bodied vehicle. "We recognize this is the most watched launch in the industry," Raj Nair, Ford product-development chief, told reporters in Dearborn, Mich., adding that the introduction is on schedule. "We know the importance of getting the F-150 right." Not everyone believes Ford can pull it off smoothly. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas called the new truck "one of the most audacious engineering projects in Ford's history" in a June report entitled "We expect a challenging truck changeover." Ford's third-quarter profit fell 34 per cent to $835 million (U.S.) as it lost about 90,000 units of F-150 production this year while the two truck plants closed for 13 weeks. Tuesday, Ford executive chairman Bill Ford, great-grandson of the founder, helped roll out the first 2015 F-150 with the automaker's new chief executive officer, Mark Fields. When he was CEO 13 years ago, Bill Ford pushed through a $2-billion overhaul of his family's famous factory in a bid to make it environmentally friendly, including outfitting it with a four-hectare "living roof" blanketed in sedum, a succulent ground cover. "The all-new F-150 continues to advance my great- grandfather's vision of building vehicles we can be proud of and our customers can depend on," he said in a statement. Ford has a lot riding on the new F-150. The $8,000 to $10,000 in gross profit each truck hauls in accounts for 90 per cent of Ford's global automotive earnings, Jonas has estimated. He said the new F-150 can't command a high enough price to cover the cost of aluminum, which can be almost three times pricier than steel. "We expect margins on the new truck to be lower than the outgoing truck due to a combination of upfront costs and competitive reaction from" General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Ram, Jonas wrote in a September note downgrading Ford to underweight. Ford raised prices on the new truck by 1.5 per cent, or $395, on the base model XL, which starts at $26,615, to 7.9 per cent, or $3,615, on the high-end King Ranch version that starts at $49,460. Ford said more than 250,000 online shoppers had configured and priced a truck on its F-150 website, a record. The truck sheds as much as 318 kilograms to improve fuel economy, mostly by using aluminum instead of steel in its body. Efficiency is the most important feature to pickup buyers, Fields said on Bloomberg Television. Ford has said it expects the F-150's fuel economy to improve by as much as 20 per cent. Official mileage ratings are expected from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by the end of the month, Ford said. "People ask me whether fuel economy is still important to the customer with gas at $3 a gallon," Bill Ford told reporters at the Rouge. "The answer is a resounding, 'yes.'" Building an aluminum vehicle on this scale comes with challenges, he said. Yet the improvements in fuel economy and driving dynamics make it worth it, he added. "Yeah, there is a risk," Ford said. "But it's one well worth taking." In 2013, Ford's F-Series was the top-selling vehicle line in the U.S. for the 32nd consecutive year, with sales rising 18 per cent to 763,402. That helped drive Ford's North American pre-tax profit to a record $8.78 billion last year. Ford told investors on Sept. 29 that pre-tax profits this year will fall to $6 billion, short of its goal of $7 billion to $8 billion. The automaker will lose more production next year as it takes six weeks to convert its F-150 factory near Kansas City. When running, the Rouge and the Kansas City Assembly Plant will have the capacity to produce more than 700,000 trucks annually. In September, the company announced it would add 1,200 jobs at its plant near Kansas City. At the Rouge, Ford added 850 workers to the more than 4,000 employees it already had there. © 2014 Torstar Corporation Illustration: • The first all-new 2015 Ford F150 truck comes off the assembly line at the Ford Dearborn Truck Plant Tuesday in Dearborn, Mich. Timeline: The pickup will be available in Canadian dealerships before the end of 2014. . Sales: Ford's Canadian sales are up 0.6% year-to-date, lagging the gains reported by its rivals. (Chrysler's sales have rallied 9.7% this year, while General Motors has seen a 5.4% increase). This is partially because Ford's truck sales have lagged as consumers await the release of the new F-150. The question for Ford is whether the truck can help it hang onto the top sales spot in Canada for the fifth year in a row. Drivetrain: The 6.2-litre V8 engine makes 455 horsepower with the help of direct fuel injection and variable valve timing; Z06 gets supercharged version with 650 horsepower; shifting is through a seven-speed manual transmission or no-extra-cost new eight-speed automatic, even for the Z06. Before the introduction of the 2014 Corvette Stingray, it had been an awfully long time since a Corvette was considered beautiful. The wedge-shaped body and grinning grille are symbolic of previous editions, yet the car is completely new. The convertible is not merely a coupe without a roof, but a highly detailed sculpture that carries shapes and themes from the body to the interior and back. But the reborn Z06 -available in both coupe and convertible this time -turns that beauty straight to menace. New for 2015, it has wider wheels than the base Stingray and it gets a plethora of air intakes on the body and the carbon-fiber hood. Other mods include a front splitter with carbon spats, extended fender flares, an eight-centimetre wider rear fascia and the small rear spoiler from the regular Stingray's performance package. If that's not enough, the optional Z07 package gets the car even more track ready with unique adjustable aerodynamic bits, stickier Michelin tires and Brembosourced carbon ceramic brake rotors. The dashing cockpit is the design equal to the exterior, something the 'Vette faithful have waited ages to see. Since the new Z06 is supposed to replace both the old ZR1 as well as the Z06, its engine is more closely related to the former. It uses a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 with 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Those are serious jumps over the base Stingray with its 6.2-litre V8 worth 455 horsepower and 460 poundfeet of torque. It uses direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to best the previous 6.2's rating of 430/424. Both the seven-speed manual transmission and newly introduced optional eight-speed automatic are available across the Stingray and Z06 lines. The sevenspeed's "Active Rev Matching" blips the throttle when upshifting/downshifting for smooth gear transitions and better vehicle stability, such as when gearing down while braking for a corner. Standard is a five-position selector knob with settings for Weather (ratchets up the stability and traction controls), Eco for maximum fuel economy, Tour (standard default position), Sport (firms up the suspension and throttle settings and reduces exhaust backpressure) and Track (really firm and loud plus it adds a lap timer to the electronic gauge panel). The Z51 performance option for the base Stingray boosts engine output to 460 ponies and adds a performance suspension and exhaust system, beefier Brembo-labeled brakes, larger wheels and tires and both differential and oil coolers. Powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder or a 3.6-litre V6, these dynamic twins will be available in either rear-or fourwheel-drive versions. Later in the year a 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel four-cylinder will become available. The Colorado looks aggressive and robust, and it is, with a payload rating of 735 kg (1,620 pounds) and a maximum towing capacity projected to be up to 3039 kg (6700 lb.). Adding to its hauling capabilities is the available six-speed automatic transmission that features a button-activated Tow/Haul mode on 3.6L V6 models, reducing the upshifting and downshifting associated with hauling a big load. The Canyon can be outfitted with the latest in technologies including an eight-inch diagonal colour touch screen, next-generation OnStar and MyLink enhancements with gesture recognition and natural language voice recognition, and navigation. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, a rear-vision camera system, and Stabillitrak electronic stability control. Available segment-first application of forward collision alert and lane departure warning should prove popular with consumers. ET The Sierra is roomy, and the passenger cabin is well appointed and very quiet, making it a pleasant place to be, especially in the luxurious Denali model. The look and feel of the interior is more refined, and the level of equipment offered is impressive. The passenger cabin has been restyled to provide increased space and comfort, as well as usable storage space. GMC's Intellilink connectivity will help you stay in contact with work and family, and multiple power and USB connections will let you keep your portable electronics charged while on the move. The Sierra features revised steering, suspension and brakes for improved ride and handling, which makes it much easier to live with when hauling large payloads or towing a trailer. The trio of EcoTec3 engines, a V-6 and two V-8s, feature direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing. All provide sufficient power while maintaining fuel efficiency without the cost and complexity of turbocharging. High-strength steel makes the frames and cabs stronger and lighter, while the strategic use of aluminum alloys helped GM reduce the weight of engines, front suspension components, hoods and other parts in order to improve overall fuel efficiency. ET Drivetrain: Base 360-horsepower 6.0-litre gasoline V8 is back with a version that can be switched to compressed natural gas; optional 6.6-litre turbodiesel spools out 765 pound-feet of torque; sixspeed transmissions for all. Selecting a big-rig Sierra over a similar Chevrolet Silverado HD mostly boils down to which body style you prefer since both pickups are identical beneath their new-for-2015 shiny sheetmetal. However one other important difference is that the GMC offers the luxury-laden Denali crew cab, in addition to the base, SLE and SLT trim levels. Chevrolet doesn't. The usual cab styles return, but the extended-cab is replaced by a new double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. Both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened and the rear bumper has built-in recessed steps at the corners for easier bed access. All HD powertrains return unaltered for 2015. The base 6.0-litre gasoline V8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 poundfeet of torque. It can be optioned with a compressed-natural-gas fuel system, although you lose 59 horsepower and 47 pound-feet in the process. For serious grunt work, there's the optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 rated at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Both employ sixspeed automatic transmissions: a GMdeveloped Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbodiesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy mates its "smart exhaust brake system" to the turbodiesel that, when the vehicle is coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine's cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver, especially when hauling or towing heavy loads downhill. Included is a stability program that reduces a trailer's tendency to wobble about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. For the 2015 model year, the HD's maximum hauling capacity has increased to 3,508 kilograms from 3,275 and conventional towing capacity has similarly increased to 8,890 kilograms from 8,165. Fifth-wheel-capacity is up to 10,525 from 10,200. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain customization is practically limitless, guided only by your specific needs and budget. Visually, this ATS Coupe is unmistakably a Cadillac, with its dramatic sharp lines, and Cadillac uses the same attractive and luxurious interior design found in its other models. Not just luxurious, your experience inside the cabin is more relaxed, and the standard Bose noise cancelling sound system makes for a more serene drive. Cadillac's upgraded CUE infotainment with navigation is only available on Luxury, Performance, and Premium trim levels -- a basic CUE system is fitted otherwise -- and when paired with OnStar, it's an unbeatable system. As a driver, my priorities are to keep my attention focused on driving and minimize and distractions, and CUE is designed with those same priorities in mind. For example, there's no need to take your eyes off the road and look at the screen when changing audio programs. Simply, press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel and tell the ATS to change radio stations or play a specific track on your iPod. Brilliant stuff. Similarly, when you need to enter an address into the navigation system, press the OnStar button and ask the representative to send the destination to your car. It all works seamlessly so that you can maintain your focus on driving and minimizing distractions. I've yet to experience a better system. With the ATS Coupe, Cadillac has introduced some next-level tech, including a built-in wireless hotspot that supports up to seven devices at the same time, more than you and your passengers could ever need in a coupe. Also available is wireless charging for your compatible mobile device. We test both technologies and they work exactly as advertised. Drivetrains carry over from the sedan and the standard engine is the efficient and powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, making 272 horse-power and 295 lb-ft of torque, with that peak torque available from 3,000 to 4,600 rpm. One of the advantages to the turbo four is that it's available with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, as our tester is. It's a welcome no-cost option that lends some sporting character to the ATS. Clutch action is relatively light and the feel of the shifter is akin to that found in BMWs, which are regarded as some of the best in the business. For those less inclined to shift for themselves, standard equipment is a six-speed automatic transmission. Serious drivers will appreciate a mechanical limited slip differential, but note that it's only available as part of the FE3 performance suspension option. That suspension package includes Cadillac's superb magnetic ride control dampers, which are among the best in the business -- and this technology is so good that even Ferrari uses it. Like the noise cancelling sound system, another bit of tech that helps keep the driving experience more serene is Cadillac's innovative Safety Alert Seat. For example, instead of using the typical beeps found in other parking assist systems, the driver's seat vibrates to alert the driver of obstructions. It's a clever way to maintain the calmness of the interior that's aligned with the luxuriousness of the cabin. --REPORT CARD (OUT OF 10) Equipment level: 9 -A very high level of standard equipment. Also published in Calgary Herald. Wed Nov 12 2014 6:04 am ET I don't know about you, but when it comes to the Cadillac brand and SUVs, the SRX isn't what immediately springs to my mind. Maybe it's all the videos I used to see on MTV or, more likely, their increased use as limos, but it's blinged-out Escalades that seem to define GM's luxury arm. Yet, despite the seeming lack of recognition for the SRX, I found it interesting that, so far this year, it outsells the Escalade six to one in Canada, and rather bemused that it's only two to one in the U.S. Put it down to having less discretionary funds to buy the biggest Caddy, higher gasoline prices, our egos (or our butts) not being as big or whatever, but the mid-sized SRX is definitely more in tune with our Canadian psyche. Not as in tune as rivals such as Audi's Q5, the Lexus RX or Mercedes M-Class, however, though much better than the Lincoln MKX. Maybe this is because Cadillac has been rather quiet with the SRX. Since the second-generation version debuted for the 2010 model year, the sharply styled SUV has received only one major update - that was in 2012, when GM ditched the base 3.0-litre V6 and optional 2.8L turbo V6 in favour of a directinjection 3.6L V6, one with more muscle (308 horsepower) to better motivate the 2,015-kilogram AWD sport-ute. (Personally, I think the 3.6, which also resides in the ATS sedan and Coupe, CTS and XTS, is one of the best power plants ever to find its way into a Cadillac.) However, the current SRX, as with a number of SUVs of its type and size, is not exactly quick on its feet. Oh, it answers with enough zoom if the gas pedal is given a healthy shove, such as merging onto the highway. But it's a little lethargic under part-throttle application, like normal traffic conditions. The hydraulic power-assisted rackand-pinion steering - standard on the base and Luxury Collection trim levels - is also artificially heavy, which exacerbates the sluggish feeling around town, although whatever ponderousness there is disappears at cruising speeds. There is a variableeffort speed-sensitive setup available on higher (Performance and Premium) trims, with tuning, says GM, biased for "sport sedan-style driving and strong on-centre feel." I'd suggest GM make this standard across all trim levels. One can utilize the six-speed automatic's console-mounted gear lever to jack the engine revs before upshifting, if one is prepared to pay the piper at the fuel pumps. Conversely, there's also the driverselectable Eco feature that alters the shift points for improved fuel economy in normal driving conditions. Personally, I didn't feel the need to employ either end of the driving spectrum, with the 13.6 litres per 100 kilometres I averaged for a week of mixed highway and suburban use reflecting that. Two-wheel drive is standard on base and Luxury model SRXs, though that's more for American consumption. Optional on the Limited and standard on the Performance and Premium trims is an all-wheel-drive system incorporating an electronic limited-slip rear differential. This, says GM, not only improves traction in slippery road conditions, but also provides side-to-side torque transfer along the rear axle to boost control during hard cornering. The amount of snow that trickled down post-Halloween wasn't much of a test for the AWD system; grip was never in doubt in the wet conditions. Helping to keep the SUV pointed in the proper direction is standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, which works in concert with the Cadillac's ABS system. Traction control is also standard. Cabin-wise, the five-seater SRX could offer a reasonably roomy interior, depending on the size of those occupying the seats. Taller passengers take note: after setting the front seat for my 6-foot-2 frame, I squeezed into the rear only to find my knees jammed into the front seatback. Too bad, having more legroom would allow a better appreciation of the cabin, which features rich-looking trim materials and a full measure of modern and techy conveniences. The lighting for the gauge cluster is among the very best I've seen - crisp, clear and easy to read. The biggest news for 2015 is the muchhyped OnStar with 4G LTE and a standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, which is on whenever the car is on and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial. I'm not as impressed with certain aspects of the Cadillac User Experience (CUE), which pairs entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players with the infotainment system; said system supposedly reducing complexity through customized information, voice commands and fewer buttons and larger icons. This is because I'm a Neanderthal when it comes to the latest in-vehicle experiences, invariably turning off my phone (though I do listen to satellite radio) and concentrating on avoiding all the distracted drivers creating havoc on the increasingly congested streets. Actually, my beef with CUE is not with the eight-inch touchscreen graphics or its home page, which resembles a smartphone screen, but with the unnecessary complication of "proximity sensing", "haptic feedback" and "capacitive technology". This last one enables consumers to use the same swipe, pinch and spread gestures on the screen and faceplate as they would when using smartphones and tablets. Here's a suggestion: Try buttons or knobs! They're much simpler and they work better. Old dude rant out of the way, there's still much to the SRX that keeps it competitive in the midsized luxe SUV segment - this despite its maturity. With its wide stance, the Cadillac feels stable and well planted. The fourwheel independent suspension setup delivers a very cosseting ride without being overly floaty. It's quiet, it's comfortable and it has all the requisite safety features. More importantly, the pricing of the tester - just under $53,000 - is quite reasonable for what you receive in return. But, industry insiders report there will be a new model for 2016, probably larger and possibly with thirdrow seating availability (like the first-generation SRX). So, if you like what you see now, get it while you can. Drivetrain: Base four-cylinder and optional V6 available with all cab styles, as is four-wheel-drive; a six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. When it comes to trucks and sport utility vehicles, General Motors tends to do things in pairs. Both the Chevrolet and GMC divisions share many similar, but moderately restyled vehicles wearing different nameplates, including the new-for-2015 Canyon and its Chevy iteration, the Colorado. After being cancelled following the 2012 model year, both pickups are back for 2015 in bigger and more powerful forms. Of course they're still smaller and less capable than the fullsize GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado. For many pickup buyers, however, they have plenty to offer, whether it's the four-door extended-cab with 62-inch box, or the four-(full) door crew cab that comes with a 50-inch, or available 62-inch bed (sorry, no regular-cab versions this time). Each style can be ordered with a 200-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder or a 305-horsepower V6. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the V6. Interestingly, the V6 comes very close to matching the four-cylinder in the fueleconomy department (11.9 l/100 km in the city and 8.8 highway for the four-cylinder versus 13.0/9.2 for rear-wheel-drive models). It's also the one to buy when hauling payloads up to 725 kilograms or towing up to 3,175 kilograms (double the 2.5's capacity). Canyons can be had in base SL, SLE and SLT trim levels. SLE trims equipped with the Autotrac (drivers can select four-wheel-drive themselves or allow the system to engage it automatically) are available with an off-road suspension package, locking rear differential, all-terrain rubber, automatic transmission and hill-descent control. All Canyons come with a power driver's seat, corner steps built into the rear bumper, locking tailgates and two-tier loading that, by sliding braces and a platform that you supply, creates two separate cargo areas. There are, of course, a plethora of options and packages for the Canyon, including leather seats (heated in front), 20-centimetre touch-screen/navigation, and a factory-installed sprayon bed liner. For added safety, a forward collision alert and lane departure warning features can be added (a rear-vision camera is standard).
