Wednesday - Sunday March 11-15, 2015 What to expect:

Pilgrim Firs Conference Center in Port Orchard, WA
Wednesday - Sunday
March 11-15, 2015
What to expect: Retreat is an adult getaway for
guild members to take time to focus their attention on basketry.
Attendees can learn in classes and from other weavers, bring
projects from home for free weaving, visit with others, enjoy the
natural forest setting, and enjoy the fun evening presentations
and activities. Retreat can be very intense due to the variety of
talented people who attend, concentrated work in classes, and
the breadth of projects in the making. We encourage those attending their first retreat to plan some free time along with the
classes.
What is Pilgrim Firs? Pilgrim Firs is a camp on
the Kitsap Peninsula in a beautiful wooded setting with a small
lake and hiking trails to explore. Be aware, there is some walking
on unpaved paths from cabins to lodge. Sleeping accommodations are rooms with 2, 3, or 4-person occupancy. Remember,
this is a little like a slumber party for adults. It can be noisier than
home, so you may want to bring earplugs. Bedding and linens
are supplied. The food is great, and
refrigerators are available for special
foods you might want to bring. There
are two spaces for self-contained
RVs, although registration cost is the
same. Unfortunately, the camp cannot allow pets.

NWBW Annual Meeting: Will be held on Thursday night. All are welcome.
Auctions: A live auction on Saturday, and a silent auction during retreat, of (mostly) basketry
items donated by businesses and other guild members.
Bag Raffle: You buy tickets at the retreat and place one or more in the carton next to each
item you want to win. On Friday night, a winning ticket is drawn from each carton.
Basket Raffle: Dorothy McGuinness has contributed a beautiful twilled paper basket for this
year’s raffle. More on page 10. Raffle tickets may be purchased with your registration (or separately if you can’t come) and also at the Retreat for $1.00 each. The drawing is Saturday evening, and you need not be present to win.
Donations Needed: Clean out your closets for usable basketry items, please label them well,
and bring them to the retreat. They will be placed in the auctions, the bag raffle, or on the treasure table. Other imaginative donations are welcome - dinners, classes, trips, events, gift baskets, etc.
Gallery Exhibit: Beginner to advanced basket makers all learn from each other. This is our
chance to share, and we especially encourage beginners to exhibit their work. Please plan to
submit up to three baskets to the gallery. We also love to see our teachers’ newest work as
well - so teachers - please submit! The Gallery is only successful when we have full participation, so don’t be shy. See the back page for forms to fill out and bring with your pieces. You can
also check in your baskets at the registration table or South Lodge.
Gallery Gala: The Friday night “opening” of the Gallery Exhibit. We socialize over refreshments.
Awl for Baskets: Members can sell basket-related items throughout the retreat, and we’ll
have a market , ‘Awl for Baskets’, on Friday night preceding the Gallery Gala. You’ll need to
provide your own display table or space.
Massage Service: Sign up at Retreat for 10-minute massages. Fee extra.
Money: There are many opportunities to spend your money at Retreat, but we can’t take plastic, so bring plenty of checks or cash. There is a cash machine at the grocery store 10 minutes
away.
Program: ???Thursday after the Meeting.
Snack Table: Bring non-refrigerated snack items to share.
Treasure Table: Another’s cast-off materials are your treasures! Throughout the weekend, select items that you can use and pay a small fee to the Guild.
* Activity schedule may change during Retreat.

Katherine Lewis 14 hrs
ALL
Max. 10
The simple clean lines of this basket make it both a great introduction to willow for beginners, or a chance for more experienced weavers to focus on perfecting their willow skills.
And the flat bottom makes it perfect to carry dishes to a potluck! The base is woven on a
provided willow hoop, scallomed stakes are attached and we’ll wale both to the right and to
the left, making a fleur-de-lis pattern (and keeping the basket nice and flat.) Simple french
randed sides give students an opportunity to focus on weaving skills, getting every stroke
just right. We’ll wale both directions again at the top, then weave a 6-rod willow border to
give the basket a beautiful finish. A cross handle with herringbone handle wrap completes
the basket. The willow in this basket is not large, but some hand strength is necessary.

About the Artist
Dorothy McGuinness
After 27 years of exploring the woven form, I have mastered the art of diagonal twill, with
which I create forms and structures not normally found in the basketry world. My medium for
this unique work is watercolor paper, which I’ve painted and cut into very narrow uniform
strips, using a pasta maker, to achieve the precision I seek.
I am intrigued by the potential outcome of any new design. The evolution of my body of work
is built on taking risks, and avoiding the “known”. The risks offer challenges, which often lead
to new directions. This is the excitement that keeps me working in a repetitive medium: it is
an on-going meditation on improvisation, a continual experiment through which my work can
progress and develop. Www.dorothymcguinnessbasket.com
