a Congressional Act approved May 13,
1938, made the 11th of November in
each year a legal holiday - “a day to be
dedicated to the cause of world peace and
to be thereafter celebrated and known as
‘Armistice Day’.
In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond
Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had
the idea to expand Armistice Day to
celebrate all veterans, not just those who
died in World War I. Representative Ed
Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented
a bill to Congress to establish the holiday
and on May 26, 1954, President Dwight
D. Eisenhower (also from Kansas), signed
the bill into law.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday observed on
November 11 that honors veterans, or people who
have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It coincides
with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which
are celebrated in other parts of the world to mark
the anniversary of the end of World War I. (Major
hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th
hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when
Congress amended this act on June
the Armistice with Germany went into effect.)

Sadie Hawkins’ mad dash for marriage was a hit with
readers, and the comic strip event swept the nation and
acquired a life of its own. By 1952 Sadie Hawkins Day was
reportedly celebrated at 40,000 known venues and inspired
Sadie Hawkins dances, where girls ask boys out. Today
Sadie Hawkins Day is a day-long event observed in the
United States on the Saturday after November 9, and is now
firmly entrenched in American culture.
