At their meeting on October 21st the Northfield Selectmen heard from citizens willing to work to keep our skateboard park open, but they need help. Earlier this month the Selectmen closed the park, citing numerous safety concerns. According to Police Chief John Raffaelly “There has been damage to the fence surrounding the park and graffiti within the park. The area of the skate park has been littered with trash and other items.” Chief Raffaelly also noted that the area has become known for criminal activity and disruptive behavior. The park was opened in 2007 by area parents and citizens with the understanding that community members would repair the facility as needed and monitor its use. This community support has eroded over the years, resulting in today’s conditions. Last Tuesday Steve and Trish Sawicki, Chris Sheehan and his son Mike told the Selectmen that they are willing to work to keep the park open but that they can’t do it on their own, they need the help of other members of our community who would like to see this park kept open for our young people to use. If you are interested in helping please call town hall at 286-7039. Between October 27th and November 2nd the Police Department responded to 125 calls for service. Taken into Custody: • Timothy Spooner 27, of Franklin for Violation of Protective Order. • Ronald Martin 65, of Hill for Theft, Cruelty to Animals and Arson (x4). • Megan Magovern 19 of Northfield for Criminal Mischief and Simple Assault.
