A Message from our New President - Peter Campbell
In this, my first message to you as President of your Club, I would like to thank you
for the confidence you have shown in me. I am very fortunate to draw inspiration
from our past presidents, most particularly Emile and Natalie, with whom I had the
great pleasure of working this past year.
First, I would like to thank the outgoing management committee, under Natalie’s
excellent leadership, for guiding our Club through a wonderful year. We enjoyed lots
of fun activities, deepened our friendships, all the while increasing our membership.
The year has presented some unexpected challenges, not the least of which was
juggling our meeting place, and the resulting extra expense, while The Westbank
Lions Community Centre is being rebuilt following the fire. We now expect to be
“home” for our January meeting, barring further delays. Until then we will be at the Super 8 for our October and
November meetings.
I am very much looking forward to working with our new management team this coming year. We are
fortunate to enjoy the continuing service and experience of A.D. MacLeod as Treasurer, of Bob Fulton as Chair
of the speakers committee (assisted this year by Alan Odynsky and Adona Dunn), and of Jerry Stinson as
newsletter Editor. New members include Wilma Griffin as Vice President, Linda Engels as Secretary, Rudy
Engels who will take over membership, Frank Renshaw who will guide our social activities (with an impressive
team comprising Linda Smithwick, Gail MacLeod, Marilyn North, Susan Forsyth and Linda Long), and
Darline Gough for Sunshine. My thanks, on behalf of all of us, for the contribution they are making to the
success of our club.
We now have some 11 activity groups, each coordinated by Club members. These make for a vibrant and
engaging Club. I would like especially to thank all the coordinators for their tremendous contribution in
providing so many opportunities for us to get to know each other better by participating in stimulating, fun and
engaging activities. Read further in the newsletter to see what they have in store for you.
As always, we welcome your suggestions as to how to make our club better. Please feel free to contact me or
any member of the management committee with your ideas.
Even as we continue to enjoy the glorious fall that the Okanagan so often offers, we know that winter is on its
way. For many of us this means that we can look forward to skiing and snowshoeing, others may be thinking of
places farther south, but one constant will always be the warmth of our relationship with our fellow PROBUS
members.

hospitalized there. He has now returned to Kelowna, is in good spirits, and is expected to be home soon.

BIO CORNER: New Members
Helen Brewer
Helen arrived in Canada in 1967 from Australia intending to work and stay a year then
travel on to Europe for one year and head back to Australia. However, she met her
husband, Dave, at Whistler one month after arriving, married a year later and never
returned to Oz until 1994 for a visit. Helen has two children – Steve, an Arborist and
Samantha, a Registered Massage Therapist. She has lived in Westbank for 46 years,
with a year in between to help Dave manage a ski area in Edmonton for a season.
Helen was employed with Farm Credit Canada, a Crown Corporation, for 20 years as a
Customer Service Representative in Kelowna.
She loves cross country skiing and spends most winter days at Telemark Nordic area
and some days at Sovereign Lake. She’s completed two road running marathons, snowshoes, runs, hikes (loves
to hike in Banff area), has competed in long distance canoeing, spends a lot of time in her large garden and does
the bookkeeping for her daughter’s business as well as a landscaping company. Enjoys good movies and
English TV programs.
Kay Foerster and Derek Parkes
Kay Foerster and Derek Parkes joined us as new members at our
September meeting.
Kay grew up in Vancouver, and lived there until she was 22. She then
moved to Vancouver Island where she raised her family. She ran her own

company offering management services to private companies and associations.
Derek hails from Dublin, Ireland. He attended Trinity College there, and trained as a Civil Engineer. He
worked for the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Highways, concentrating on traffic safety towards the end
of his career. Both Kay and Derek are retired now.
They married in 1998 and moved to West Kelowna from White Rock ten years ago. Between them, they have 6
sons, a daughter, and five grandchildren.
Kay and Derek enjoy reading, travelling (especially cruising), RV’ing, and socializing. They go south for the
winter to get away from the cold.

David Worrall
David is a member of our Westside PROBUS Club and was originally from Australia, where he was a teacher
for 10 years before coming to Canada and the Okanagan. He studied geography at university and then taught at
KSS and Mount Boucherie High Schools. David and wife Carmel have lived on the Westside for 45 years. He is
a guest lecturer with Princess Cruises. He will be talking to us about the role the Royal Navy has played in
establishing and governing maritime regulations and law.

We try to ensure that you dine with different couples each rotation but that can be quite a challenge with the

The walking group has been pretty active. On September 30, Murray Marchant and Susan Baumann led a walk
in Bear Creek Regional Park, and on October 7, Gary and Darline Gough took a group of 12 walkers through
Kalamoir Regional Park. It was a perfect Okanagan day with temperatures for October in the 20C range. The
views from the higher trails of Okanagan Lake were spectacular with many of the trees and shrubs in fall
foliage.
On October 21 Doug Karvonen will take the group to Lost Lake in the Myra Bellevue Park, while on
November 4 Marg Cunningham is planning a walk along Veneer Creek on the Westside. The final walk of the
fall season on November 18 will be led by Sheila Taylor. Details will be send out close to the date of the walks.

Westside PROBUS Club Members are invited to join the Newcomers Bowling League - it is fun, healthful, and
a great opportunity to socialize. The Newcomers Bowling League will resume at the Capri Valley Lanes soon
for the 2014/15 season.
As a PROBUS member you are welcome to join. Previous bowling experience or bowling skill is not required!

Would you be interested in a “Mini Course” presentation dealing with how to handle files and folders on your
PC computer, and how to manage your inventory of photos, and perfom basic editing and “fixes”? I get
questions frequently about these topics and have presented a show and tell session for the Digital Camera
group on this topic several years ago. Perhaps this could be repeated for a larger group or a joint session of the

Digital Photography -Camera Club
The Camera Club of the PROBUS Club of Westside meets at 2 PM on the first Friday of the month at the Westwood
Retirement Resort in West Kelowna. Anyone of any ability or experience is welcome to participate.
Generally, the format followed has been to go as a group on a photo shoot somewhere in and around Kelowna and
return to the Westwood Resort at 2 pm. to show pictures taken. Meetings are currently scheduled for November,
December, February, March, April, May and June.
Photos from recent outings will be presented on posters at the first meeting back at the Lions Community Centeranticipated for January. So get going on your posters NOW!.
The "Assignment" for the 7 November meeting is to take pictures of "Fish", most likely of either the Adams
River salmon run and/or a local kokanee run.

NEW ACTIVITY---? Formal or informal?
GAMES NIGHT
Games such as Ditch the Queen, Pegs and Jokers, Sequence, Golf and Mexican Train have so far come to mind.
We are certain you will have others.
We think the group size should be 8 – 12 and if we get more than 12 interested, we can have more than one
group.
At this stage our idea is for the host to provide simple munchies/snacks, the tables (others will be able to help)
and choose the games for that evening (phoning around for ideas and provision of the games is perfectly
acceptable).
We suggest meeting once a month, in rotation at each of our homes from September through March/April.
Evenings(7.00 – 10.00 ?) might be preferable but we do not rule out daytime get-togethers.
So we are asking for anyone interested to sign up at the October Members’ Meeting. When signing up
please indicate: preferred day, evening or daytime, suggested games – to add to our list!
This is primarily about fellowship and fun – the games (and snacks!) are a vehicle to achieve that aim

The year-end lunch at O’Keefe Ranch and visit to ‘Art in the Garden’ at the home studio of Michael Jell,
Vernon, attracted a group of 16 eager participants. (See photos). We began our new year with another big
attraction, a presentation by Stefan Hohwy of the Westside club entitled “Earthenware to Bone China”, a slide
show and hands-on demonstration with examples of porcelain, majolica and other forms of the ceramic arts.

My name is Suzanne Bell and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa. As part
of my dissertation research I am looking for women 50 years of age or older to participate in a study on older adult
women’s experiences in intimate relationships.
I originally contacted the Probus club in my hometown of Huntsville, Ontario. They were fantastic and included information
about my study in the President’s Message section of their April newsletter. I was wondering if there is any way I could
circulate information about my study and/or one of my flyers (attached) among the members of your community. I have
had about 120 women take part so far, but I need quite a few more for my results to be meaningful.
