'Staking Out' for Healthy Streams
Volunteers help harvest and plant live stakes across the watershed.
It was cold, wet work, but between Oct. 28 and 30, volunteers and staff from
NVCA and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) harvested 3,000 live
stakes to be used across the Nottawasaga Valley watershed.
When installed stream

willow, alder and
dogwood stabilize stream
banks (reduce erosion),
increase biodiversity and
help keep water
temperatures cool in the
summer months.
To date, volunteers,
NVCA and NCC planted 1,500 stakes along the new stream channel at the
Mingay Nature Reserve in Creemore. Students from Stayner Collegiate High
School installed several hundred stakes along Mad River in Mulmur.
Can you lend a hand? Black Ash Creek Planting Day, Nov 15
The Nottawasaga Watershed Improvement Program (N-WIP) and NVCA are
looking for volunteers to help plant the remaining stakes alongside the Black
Ash Creek in Collingwood on Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. Contact Wil

With hunting season in full swing, hikers and trail users are reminded to take
care when out in the Minesing and Osprey wetlands and local forests. Take a
minute to read our Be Seen Be Safe brochure for tips to keep safe.
Thinking of Planting Trees?
We can help.
Each spring, NVCA plants more than 100,000
trees on private land through our forestry
program. These future forests provide many
benefits to our watershed, including erosion
control, flood protection and wildlife habitat.
If you are a landowner thinking of planting 2.5
acres or more, give us a call to see if you are
eligible for this program. We’ll help you to select
trees that are well suited to your property, plant
the trees, and monitor them as they grow into a
healthy forest.
As well, you may be able to take advantage of grants to help with the costs of
tree planting or take part in the provincial Managed Forest Tax Incentive
Program.
We are currently booking sites for the 2015 planting season. Contact Rick

Have a smaller area to plant (less than 2 acres)? If you are planting near
a waterway or wetland, NVCA may be able to arrange for volunteers to come
and help get trees in the ground. Contact Shannon Stephens, Healthy Waters

discuss your project.
Grants Available for Environmental Farm Plan Projects
Do you have a Best Management Practice you
want to implement on your farm? Funding may
be available under the federal-provincial Growing
Forward 2 program. The next round of
applications will be accepted between Nov. 10
and Dec. 11, 2014.

Creating Wildlife Habitat Workshop
Are you a rural
landowner looking for
ways to enhance
wildlife habitat on
your property?
Join the Lake Simcoe Georgian Bay Wetland Collaborative at one of three
workshops and learn about wetland and upland habitat enhancement
techniques.
Nov. 12, 7-9 pm at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Center
Nov. 26, 7-9 pm at the Tiffin Center for Conservation
Dec. 4, 7-9 pm at the Port Bolster Hall, Pefferlaw
These free workshops present will cover habitat enhancements such as wood
duck nest boxes, basking logs and bank stabilization techniques. They also will
provide information on available funding for projects that improve wildlife
habitat.

Minesing Wetlands - An Evening of Science &
Stewardship
On Nov. 13, the Friends of Minesing Wetlands
present an exciting evening on the science and
stewardship of the internationally significant
Minesing Wetlands at the Tiffin Centre for
Conservation in Utopia.
Local experts will discuss the ecology,
hydrogeology and forest health of the Minesing.
Special presentations include a discussion on the
rare Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly and land
securement and stewardship activities within this special part of our
watershed.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and presentations begin at 7 p.m. As seating is
limited, advanced registration is recommended (click here).
