EPWORTH UNITED METHODIST Volume 3, Issue 11 November 2014 WWW.EPWORTH-PC.ORG WHY GIVE THANKS? “Rejoice always.” I Thessalonians 5:16 “Pray without ceasing.” I Thessalonians 5:17 “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:18 TEN REASONS TO GIVE THANKS 1. It keeps us aware of God’s presence. 2. It motivates us to look for God’s purpose. “Now, children,” said their mother just before Thanksgiving dinner, “tell us something you’re thankful for.” “I’m thankful,” said her son without hesitation, “that I’m not a turkey!” 3. It helps us to submit to God’s will for our life. 9. It energizes us. 4. It reminds us of our dependence upon God. 10. It transforms our anxiety into peace. 5. It develops a stronger trust in God. SO, WHY GIVE THANKS? 6. It is essential in order to be able to rejoice. I wish for all of you a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving Day! Keep your hand in Jesus’ hand and your eyes on the Cross! BECAUSE GIVING THANKS TO GOD IMPACTS EVERY AREA OF YOUR LIFE! 7. It gives impact to our Christian witness. by Rev. Grant Parker Brother Grant 8. It focuses our attention on God rather than on the circumstances. Mark Your Calendars Stewardship Sunday & Stewardship Luncheon Sunday, November 16th Please bring your completed pledge forms to the combined morning worship service at 10 AM for dedication and blessing. Please bring a covered dish for the luncheon. EPWORTH UNITED METHODIST Page 2 Stewardship The Internet provides us with several definitions of stewardship, such as, “Stewardship means the management or care of something, particularly the kind that works.” We find that we are all stewards of something, but can we say that all of what we manage works? Hugh Whelchel, an economic writer, wrote an article published on the Internet discussing “Four Principles of Biblical Stewardship.” He discusses the principles as, 1. Ownership. The 24th Psalm begins with, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” 2. Responsibility. We are called as God’s stewards to manage that which belongs to God. 3. Accountability. We will all give account to the rightful owner as to how well we managed the things He has entrusted to us. 4. Reward. We all should long to hear the Master say what He exclaims in Matthew 25:21, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in change of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” As we see how these principles are expressed and used in our Bibles, we see how important the subject really becomes. Our whole lives become a matter of how well we can perform and how well we understand what true ownership really means. This produces amazing results as we consider all ranges of wealth from poor to extremely rich. It seems that the richer a person is, the harder it is for him to understand that wealth is not independently attained. Better stewardship begins inside of all of us! George Purdue Visitation Volunteers The following people will accompany Brother Grant when he goes visiting on Monday nights. If you are listed here, please meet Brother Grant at 6:30 pm at the church to go with him to visit prospective new members.
