When winter hits,
we’re ready.
You can count on city employees
to keep our neighbourhoods safe
and clear — in any weather.
Big storms often don’t give you much
warning. A city like Calgary needs a
team in place that can hit the streets
with a few hours notice.
Fortunately, that’s just what we have.
When the snow flew early this year,
Calgary’s city employees were prepared:
plowing streets and sidewalks, clearing
downed branches, trees and other debris,
salting and sanding.
We’re your reliable, dedicated team.
So when some politicians talk about
replacing experienced public employees
with for-profit contractors, know that it
comes at a price.
When your family’s safety is on the line,
cutting corners isn’t worth it.

TASTE 2014
Raises $19K
for WHCA
Facility
Upgrades!
WOW!! Once again a HUGE
THANK YOU to everyone
who came out in support of WHCA and had a
great time at TASTE of
the Neighbourhood back
in September. While the
event was not sold out
as in previous years, the
250+ people in attendance
shared a fabulous evening
with friends & neighbours
at the event and together
raised $19,000 for important facility upgrades and
program enhancements.
Many first-time attendees were amazed by the magical
transformation of WHCA’s gymnasium from its concrete
block & sport-infused state. One guest called the event
a great community-building “shaker”, and expressed his
delight at the annual event’s ability to bring in people
from all areas of the community. This certainly is the ultimate goal of TASTE of the Neighbourhood – to gather
neighbours together at the centre of their community
and encourage continued usage of this inner-city
facility.
As in the past, the generous partnerships with area restaurants, specialty shops and Calgary’s finest breweries
provided tasty samples for all guests to enjoy. Special
thanks to all of our Silent Auction donors and to everyone who outbid their friends to raise almost $5,000
while getting some fabulous items & services (including
a home baked pie each month for a year – yum!). Please
do your part in supporting the local Vendors who
donated or discounted their products our event:

We are so grateful for the generosity of our Silver Level Sponsors: Dr. Esther Lee & Riverside Dental, and the
Ramage Group, Bronze Level Sponsors: Semmens,
Forbes & Wood and Suncor Energy, and for the in-kind
support from Megaphone Communications and New
Hope Church.
It takes a dedicated crew to pull this event together
each year – get in touch at [email protected]
to offer your valuable talents or your sponsorship support for this and other events at WHCA. We can’t wait
to see you next year at TASTE of the Neighbourhood!

in the future), and for garden tools or amendments as
well as some bulbs to help beautify the grounds.
A BIG THANK YOU TO:
Sunnyside Greenhouses who have donated for several
years in a row. This year we purchased some kids tools
and on top of that they donated some soil amendments
for our communal beds that we want to make more productive to be able to donate some produce.
The 2014 summer season came to a close with a bang
of a snow storm. This has really put a lot of trees at risk
because as they are winding down for the winter, they
now have the added stress of trying to repair themselves. Through working with our Community Garden
and getting involved with many knowledgeable people
in the field, I would like to share some great information
from Mike Dorian of Living Soil Solutions about the
care of our trees. He is an expert in Vermicomposting,
does a Compost Tea Spray for many community gardens (and can do this for you at home as well), and also
does a Root Injection Service which is what I want to
share with you today:
Greengate Garden Center for donating several gift
cards so we could purchase bulbs, tools, as well as some
items for new gardeners to get them on started on the
right path.
Have a sick tree? Is there grass growing up to the base
of the tree? Trees that grow in our forests are used to
certain kinds of soil structures and microbes, while
grass likes a soil with a little different species of microbes. Grass can actually stunt a trees growth, cause
the tree to become ill, and even kill the tree over time.
If one mulches out a good area around the base of the
tree with wood chips or any other wood material, this
would encourage fungal growth which is essential for
the tree to be healthy. Mike Dorian’s Root Injection Service can help speed up this process by injecting a highly
nutrient dense fungal dominant compost tea down
into the ground around the base of the tree and its drip
line. This gets the solution down closer to the roots to
help the tree get the nutrients it needs to be healthier
and more vibrant. By also punching down small holes
in the ground this also helps break up the compaction
and helps some air down into the soil as well. For more
information you can check out Mike’s website: www.
livingsoil.ca.
I-gravel donated 4 yards of compost to help amend the
beds. We have never worked with them before and they
were so nice to step up!
I would like to take the time to honor some people and
businesses that help the WHCA on a regular basis with
great generosity.
This year (2014) we were given gift cards from various
garden centers. We use these to purchase items that
help with the kid’s classes we put on this summer (and
Spruce it up Garden Center worked with us in our
Spring Fundraiser (Spruce Up the Neighborhood) bringing in flower pots and vegetable plants to sell and to
share the proceeds with the Green Committee to help
us keep the gardens in good order. On top of that they
also donated a huge amount of amendments for our
communal plots. We have purchased some tools, seeds
for teaching kids how to grow sprouts to eat at home,
plant markers and you name it.
Home Depot at North Hill stepped up when our hose
broke and donated a hose this year. In the past they
gave us the best price on the highest quality cedar to
build our gardens and many gift cards to help with the
build! They are always there for us!
Jim Morrison, one of our West Hillhurst community
members stepped up to help us with “BIG BERTHA” his
antique rototiller that used to be his father’s! He and his
girlfriend Tuky helped for many hours a few weeks ago
and paid the painful price (sore muscles) for it too! What
a lifesaver!

ongoing support of the gardens!

As noted in the October 15 edition of the Calgary
Herald, the Kensington Legion site is slated for redevelopment. Using 18A Street NW as a dividing line,
the site has been split into West and East halves, with
the West side being redeveloped first. A Land Use
Amendment and Development Permit Application
has been submitted for the West half, which could
take anywhere from 8 months to more than a year
to be approved. Development on the East side of the
parcel will require it’s own Land Use Amendment and
Development Permit Application, and will not begin
until the West side is completed.
According to the Herald article, the proposed design
for the entire site is displayed at the Legion. The Planning Committee is in contact with both Streetside
Developments and Councillor Druh Farrell’s office regarding this project. As this project moves forward,
we will be posting updates in the Warbler and on the
West Hillhurst Community Association website.
If there are any questions or concerns, the Planning Committee can be reached at [email protected].

Pharmacists say being Proactive and Prepared is the key to Flu
Season Survival
Taking simple, yet highly effective, steps to preventing influenza (flu) can prevent a trip to a busy hospital emergency room
during the upcoming flu season. Influenza can be very serious
for those who have health vulnerabilities such as senior citizens, pregnant women, or people with chronic health conditions. Influenza causes about 20,000 people to get admitted to
the hospital and about 4,000 deaths in Canada each year.
Health agencies across Western Canada are working to ensure
Canadians are prepared to combat the seasonal flu, which can
help free up emergency room space for emergency situations.
Knowing the difference between a common cold and the flu is
as important as being proactive and getting the flu shot early.
FLU SEASON SURVIVAL TIPS
•Be Proactive
•Get your flu shot early. Call or visit your local pharmacy
to book your influenza vaccination appointment. Ask if you
qualify for a free flu vaccination or other recommended vaccine. If not, a fee may apply.
•Wash your hands frequently. Use soap and warm water for
at least 15 seconds. If water and soap are not available, use an
alcohol-based hand sanitizer and ensure you rub your hands
until the product is dry.
•Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your sleeve. Dispose
of the tissue right away and wash your hands afterwards using the tips above.
•Avoid rubbing your nose and eyes. Keep your hands away
from your eyes, nose and mouth to keep germs from entering
your body.
•Don’t share. Avoid sharing food, utensils, water bottles and
other things that could pass bacteria and viruses.
•Take a regular daily dose of vitamin C. Vitamin C intake can
help decrease the duration and severity of a cold or flu if you
get one.
•Rest well. If you or a family member is sick, stay home from
school or work and avoid contact with others.
Be Prepared
1. Know the signs of influenza. Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection. Transmitted by airborne droplets and
can survive up to 48 hours outside the body; it can take a
few days to a week for symptoms to appear. Some examples
include:
•A sudden, high fever (38 to 40 degrees C)
•Headache, extreme fatigue, chills and sweating
•Dry cough
•Loss of appetite
•Muscle aches and pains
•Runny and stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throat
It can lead to complications such as pneumonia, respiratory
failure, or worsening of a current chronic medical condition.
2. Have a flu season survival kit on hand. There is nothing
worse when you’re sick than having to leave your house to
find relief. Make sure you have the following on hand for
easy self-care:
•Over the counter cold and flu medications
•Soup, soda crackers, ginger ale or beverages with electrolytes for rehydration
•Kleenex
•Disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer
•Nasal spray
•Herbal tea
•Thermometer

Walking Strong for Thomas
Over 350 people gathered for the 4th Annual Walk For Thomas at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School on Sunday, October
5th to help raise funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma Research. The Walk also commemorated the life of Thomas Mueller, who died in September 2011 at the age of 7 from this rare
childhood cancer.
A warm and sunny fall morning was shared by the supporters
on the 3K Walk through neighbourhood streets of Hillhurst and
West Hillhurst where Thomas lived and played with his friends
and family. As in previous years, the crowd returned to enjoy
a tasty post-Walk BBQ lunch in the field at Queen Elizabeth
School.
At press time, nearly $24,000 from this year’s event had been
added to Peleton65 and The James Fund in support of the
Thomas Mueller Phage Display Project. This groundbreaking research partnership
led by Dr. Paul Beaudry of the
University of Calgary and Dr.
David Kaplan at The Hospital
for Sick Children in Toronto
uses an innovative approach
to identify and kill neuroblastoma cells while sparing normal cells in children. We are
thrilled that contributions to
this local initiative will fund research being done in our city.
Many thanks to everyone who came out in support of this worthy cause, and to an amazing crew of almost 50 volunteers who
made the Walk possible once again this year. Special recognition goes to the organizing committee, and to our new and
returning Walk for Thomas sponsors for their generous contributions: Dairy Lane Café, Master Meats, Sunterra Market, Little
Rock Printing, Semmens, Forbes & Wood realtors, Spolumbo’s
Fine Foods & Deli, Unique Blend, Todd Audio Visual, Majestic
Tent & Event Rentals, West Jet, Ross Aitken, New West Equipment, Rogers, Six Cent Press, Queen Elizabeth Elementary
School and Critical Mass.
For more information and to see photos of the event, you can
find us on facebook, instagram and twitter using the hashtag
#walkforthomas. If you have not yet done so, please visit www.
peloton65.com to make your donation and join us in the fight
against neuroblastoma.

Yielding to Emergency
Vehicles
Animal & Bylaw Services
Addressing the Problem…
Often times, when members of Animal & Bylaw Services
or Alberta Health Services/Emergency Medical Services
respond to a call, time is of the essence.
When accessing a property from an alley, the difficulty
comes when addresses are not clearly displayed at the
back of the home. It is even more difficult in areas where
houses are built in close proximity to one another.
For your safety, please be aware that under the Community Standards Bylaw, your address must be clearly
displayed at the back of your property, if adjacent to an
alley or public walkway.
Calgary Fire, CPS and Animal & Bylaw Services appreciate your support and assistance.
Be Street Smart Safe
Do you know the rules of the road? Some people might
be surprised by what bylaws exist in Calgary to ensure
our streets are safe.
Recreation
Hockey nets, ski/snowboard/skateboard ramps and
basketball nets are not permitted on City streets, even
temporarily.
Obstruction
•Do not place electrical cords, hoses or chains over a
sidewalk.
•Do not place any material in lanes, streets, sidewalks or
City right-of-ways.
Vehicles
•Vehicles parked on driveways may not block sidewalks
or boulevards
•Do not leave unregistered, uninsured vehicles on City
streets or lanes.*
•A vehicle must be operable and moved within 72,
hours or it may be considered abandoned and removed as such.*
*This regulation is a part of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act
and is enforced by the Calgary Parking Authority.

NOVEMBER
Time is the enemy in any emergency. You can help
EMS, police and fire get to the scene quickly and safely by following the rules of the road. It is important for
motorists to understand how to safely yield right of
way to emergency vehicles with lights and siren activated, so that everyone stays safe.
What to do when an emergency vehicle
approaches with lights and siren activated
• If you’re in the middle of an intersection when an
emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren
activated, safely clear the intersection.
• On a one or two lane road, motorists should move to
the right side of the road, slow down, and then stop.
Remember to signal.
• On a road with three or more lanes, motorists should
move to the nearest side of the road and stop. If driving in the centre lane, move to the right side of the
road and stop. Remember to signal.
• Come to a complete stop and wait for the emergency vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency vehicles (there is often more than one) before
re-entering traffic flow. Remember to signal.
• Remember, emergency vehicles may need to use
any available road space to maneuver. This may
include the use of shoulders and left hand turning
lanes to pass other traffic.
While driving on the road
• Drive attentively and defensively at all times. Be cognizant to sirens of emergency vehicles and be prepared to yield the right of way.
• It is the law for motorists to slow down to at least
60 km/hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when
driving past an emergency vehicle which is stopped.
• Do not break the rules of the road in order to give right
of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include
proceeding through a red light or making an illegal
turn. Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in
the area.
• Driver attention must be directed towards the roadway and safe operation of the vehicle in which they
are driving, at all times.
• Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle
and an emergency vehicle should it need to stop
suddenly.

Global Cardboard Challenge
Inspired by the short film, ‘Caine’s Arcade’, the Global
Cardboard Challenge is a worldwide celebration of child
creativity and the role communities play in fostering it.
‘Caine’s Arcade’ tells the story of a chance encounter
between filmmaker Nirvan Mullick and Caine Monroy,
a 9-year-old boy who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s East
Los Angeles auto parts shop. On the last day of summer,
Nirvan stopped in to buy a door handle, and became
Caine’s first customer. Amazed by the boy’s creativity,
Nirvan decided to organize a flash mob of customers to
come down to the arcade to surprise Caine and make
his day. The resulting 11-minute video has been widely
cited as one of the most inspirational stories of 2012.
Queen Elizabeth joined the Global Cardboard Challenge
this year; the Challenge culminating in a sharing event
on October 23 where students proudly displayed their
own creativity and inspiration. Our school community
is proud to have participated in this global movement
celebrating creativity, play, ingenuity, collaboration and
so much more. The school was completely energized
by the Global Cardboard Challenge and we’re looking
forward to seeing more innovation throughout the year
and beyond.
School Patrols
If you have driven down 18th Street in the morning or
after school, you have likely noticed our new School
Patrols at the crosswalk directly in front of the school.
Many of our Grade 5 and 6 students have been training hard for this important role. Thank you to Constable
Ross for leading our training and thank you to all our
neighbours and those driving past for slowing down
and keeping our children safe.
Walk for Thomas
October 5 marked the fourth annual Walk for Thomas,
an event to raise funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma Research and to commemorate the life of one of
our former students who died of this rare childhood
cancer in 2011. This three kilometre walk was a nice
community event and raised significant dollars towards
the fight against this cancer. Approximately 350 people

The children have been having lots of fun this past
month. Their weekly music lessons are now well under way and the kids are loving it. Perhaps some parents are lucky enough to have their kids singing some
new songs at home too. There has also been lots of
talk of fall - the colours of fall and foods of harvest,
as well as what we can be thankful for at Thanksgiving. And of course crafts, stories and parties around
a favourite holiday: Halloween! Such fun to dress up
and have a party with your school friends, to carve/
paint pumpkins, and the surprise and magic of actually being allowed to go door to door asking for (&
receiving!) candy. Many thanks to the organizers and
also the parents/caregivers for the success of the preschool parties - they wouldn’t be the same without
your continued support.
The children continue to improve their fine motor
skills while working on great crafts that require cutting, pasting and colouring - didn’t you love those
turkeys and night creatures? The crafts and stories
help to bring home the concepts of letters, numbers,
shapes, while gross motor skills are developed during
soccer with Coach Steve.

Community Update On New Schools
The Calgary Board of Education is pleased to welcome
more than 3,000 additional students this year. With
rapid growth comes the challenge of finding schools
for all these students. Funding for new school construction hasn’t kept pace with growth, particularly in new
communities. As a result, we bus about a third of our
students to schools where there is space.
To meet this pressing need, the CBE is planning the
construction of 12 new schools, three major modernizations and two replacement schools, all to open in 2016.
If you like your espresso coffee

City
Gardens
by Barbara Shorrock
Perhaps you have been in your home for 30 years and
have your garden, front and back, just exactly the way
you want it. Perhaps you bought this house last year
and the previous owners thought cutting the grass was
“gardening”. Or maybe you fit somewhere in between.
The internet and Google are marvelous tools, but there
is something familiar and comforting about curling up
on the couch with a lovely colourful book with lots of
pictures. I have recently added another book to my library, and highly recommend it as a source of ideas for
changes to our gardens, both old and new.
City Gardens from Canadian Gardening Magazine, edited by Liz Primeau, is sub-titled “Creative Urban Gardens
and Expert Design Ideas” and I couldn’t have said it better myself. Every page features glorious photos of bits
and pieces of a city garden. Furthermore, every garden
is a Canadian garden from Toronto to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary through to Lotusland on
the west coast. Sure, they can grow stuff in Vancouver
that we envy, but the number of zone 3 and 4 gardens in
this book would make you proud. Check out the Table
of Contents: Small Gardens:
Classic Gardens
Perennial Gardens
Family Gardens
Serenity Gardens
Do you have a side yard that is merely a pathway from
front to back? Maybe a layer of gravel or a neglected
bunch of straggly perennials? The one featured in “Small
Gardens – Sideyard Savvy” shows a practical solution
that turned a poor space into a veritable jewel in the
gardener’s crown.
“Reclaiming the Parking Lot” transformed a garbagestrewn parking space between two stores into a charming courtyard and rose garden. They show you how they
did it.
“Breaking the Rules” shows a jungle-like Kelowna garden, lush and crowded in a desert climate. Can’t do that
here, you say? It is full of hostas, clematis, ferns, bergenias and coral bells, all of which are perfectly happy in
our Chinook climate.
The “Dream Retreat” is a serene Japanese-style garden
in Regina, and “Contemplating Paradise” is a peaceful
rock garden in Calgary, where the rocks have found their
way, one by one, from the nearby Rocky Mountains into
William Schrader’s yard.
From the very beginning, there was a familiar feel to City
Gardens. As it turns out, Liz Primeau also wrote Front
Yard Gardens/Growing More than Grass which I picked
up a few years ago at the CHS Spring Garden Show. It
is a larger book and follows a similar format in featuring
gardens from cities all across Canada – front yards only.
Whether you are an experienced or novice gardener,
growing plants and learning about them go together.
“What do I know? Not much. I just move stuff around
until it’s happy”. This is quoted from one of our neighbours, owner of a prize-winning garden in Queensland,
who would attest that we can never know it all. Mother
Nature will see to that.

Coyotes were once called song dogs in First
Nations myth. The urban coyote now lives in
nature surrounded by urban development.
Citizens report seeing coyotes and a few

does that mean you need to be afraid of coyotes? She will explore how coyotes live in the
city, what challenges they face, and how we
can co-exist without fear.

Alexander led a guided walk around Nose

what type of habitat (in parks like Nose Hill)
is important to coyotes and answers whether
coyotes were living in these places before
the city was built. Or, are coyotes “invading”
cities, like you hear in the media?

coyotes reaching maturity leave the pack to

for coyotes, and when hungry, they will sometimes roam residential areas looking for food.
This summer there were concerns over wild
animal trapping in the city, as well as how we
manage the encroachment of bears and cougars. Or are we in their space? Urban wildlife
is a reality, and experts from the Calgary Zoo
as well as Alberta Fish and Wildlife will bring
forward an Urban Wildlife Strategy.
The city can be a better custodian of good
animal welfare practice. Animal and Bylaw
Services already plans to meet with other
agencies. Be pro-active to avoid conflict with
animals like beavers, by planting trees along
the river, placing wire around tree trunks,
and providing under-dam drains to control
water levels.
A cougar found prowling at the South Calgary Health Campus delayed many police
officers who waited for the Alberta Fish and
Wildlife officials to arrive. Of course we need
to respect the potential for harm to the public. The Minister of Justice & Solicitor General
announced a review of the Provincial Government’s response in this situation.

Debt, Growth, and Budgets – looking for a better way
Calgary remains one of the fastest growing cities in
North America. Every five years, Calgary adds roughly
the population of the City of Regina to its borders. During my time in office, from 2001 to today, our population has grown by 36%, with over 100% of growth occurring on the edges of the city as older communities
hollowed out, causing pressure on both our capital and
operating budgets to service these new areas.
So that’s the bad news. But if the status quo isn’t working, what is the alternative? The good news is that a lot
of work is already underway. I have been sounding the
alarm on growth and debt for many years, and our new
City Manager, Jeff Fielding, also recognizes the urgency
of our growth, debt, and budget challenges. In next
month’s article I will talk about how the City, working
with the development industry, is seeking a sustainable
model that will balance the demands of a growing city.
SAFETYSYNC
ONLINE SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
“An effective health and safety
management system can help prevent
losses, reduce costs and provide
evidence of due diligence.”
With the city’s four-year budget deliberations quickly
approaching, City Council will once again consider how
to fund rapidly increasing demands for infrastructure
and services with limited funding. Although a thorough
debate on priorities is planned, the lion’s share of our
budget choices will continue to be shaped by past and
future decisions on how we grow as a city.
A booming city poses a number of dilemmas. Growth is
costly. Calgary’s debt is directly related to growth, with
75% of our infrastructure investment going to support
new development. Earlier this year, Council debated on
whether we should raise Calgary’s self-imposed debt
limit to facilitate more growth. I was strongly opposed
to this for three reasons: Calgary has the highest debtper-capita ratio of any city in Canada; it would enable
new development in areas that are not ready, forcing us
into further debt; capital investment requires additional
operating and maintenance dollars. Thankfully, most of
Council agreed with my position and took the advice
of our Chief Financial Officer and chose not to raise the
debt limit, but the question of how to pay for all our new
residents’ needs continues.
Most new operating costs also go to accommodate
growth, and yet the city needs to approve new communities to house all of our newcomers. In the past, Calgary
chose to build outwards, ever-expanding the city limits
with low-density neighbourhoods. Low-density residential communities never pay for themselves, so this
growth pattern came with a significant cost that will
continue long into the future.
