He was born and raised in Farmville, Virginia to a family of four sisters and three brothers. His parents always made sure that everyone went to church on Sunday. John’s work ethic began early while working in a local grocery store. The owner, a Christian, showed him true benevolence weekly in his actions towards his family. John attended the Gresham Grade School and eventually graduated from Robert R. Moton High School in 1951. Having a foot condition, he was truly surprised when at age 18 he was drafted into the United States Army. Uncle Sam waived the foot condition and John was off to the Korean War in 1951. John was assigned to the 23rd Armor Division as a Tank Commander who was responsible for three tank crews. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant during his military stint which developed his leadership and management skills. After John was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army he enrolled at St. Paul College utilizing the G.I. Bill. He majored in the industrial education trades. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, he worked at Southwestern High School as an Assistant Principal. John Monroe’s career is filled with numerous awards and achievements. He is most proud of being President of the International Virginia Technical Education Association from 1995 until 1997. The highlight of his life was being chosen to receive the 2000 Umoja Award for Community Work by East End Baptist Church. John Monroe has served as a Trustee, on the Personnel and Faith Evangelism Ministries, Men’s Choir and Meals on Wheels for several years. John attends Sunday school regularly, providing words of encouragement and support and prayer for everyone. Mr. Monroe, as I call him, believes that “If you put God first in your life, everything else will fall into place.” He is quick to say, “It wasn’t always that way, but I have grown to know and trust God.” John Monroe goes for his morning walk through his East Suffolk Gardens neighborhood every morning. The expression on his face is always of being in deep thought but always ready to give a warm smile to people passing by. Eighteen months ago the love of his life, Mrs. Millie Monroe, passed after being married for over 52 years. The pain of that experience is still evident on his face but John Monroe continues to trust in God by Faith. Revelations 3:20 says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.” John Monroe says, “The knob is on the Inside. Open it.” Interviewed by: Deacon William A. Freeman Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker Author: Jennifer Chiaverini Publisher: Penguin Group, 2013 Historical Fiction*, 384 pages Reviewed by: Joyce Atkins This historical novel tells the story of Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave, and the extraordinary relationship that she had with Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of President Abraham Lincoln. Elizabeth Keckley was born a slave in Virginia; however, she was able to purchase her freedom in 1855 from the earnings she made as a skilled seamstress. She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1860 and soon the wives of many Washington politicians recognized her sewing skills. She made dresses for the wives of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, and eventually became the exclusive dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln. With the Civil War as the backdrop, the book reveals how Elizabeth Keckley became the close companion and confidante of Mrs. Lincoln. Mrs. Keckley spent many hours in the family quarters of the White House and was privy to the private lives of the Lincolns. She supported Mrs. Lincoln during the death of her son and during the assassination of President Lincoln. Through the eyes of Mrs. Keckley, President Lincoln’s strong character and gentle nature are highlighted. The book reveals Mrs. Lincoln’s complex personality and how she created much drama and gossip in Washington during Abe Lincoln’s presidency. I’m sure the author took some poetic license with the story, but Mrs. Keckley was a real person and did live an extraordinary life. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to all especially those that enjoy Civil War history. *You can read Mrs. Keckley’s own account in her book, Behind the Scenes or, Thirty years a slave and Four Years in the White House.
