Builds Homes for Veterans

What better way to celebrate Veterans Day
on Tuesday than to hand the keys to a refurbished
home over to a local vet?
That is what Habitat for Humanity of Westchester was able to do in Yonkers last week when
two veterans, and their families, were presented
with two refurbished homes at 120 High St.
Habitat-Westchester CEO Jim Killoran and
his team held a dedication party on Veterans Day
to dedicate their latest project, which turned two
forgotten houses into renovated homes for vets to
own at an affordable price.
U.S. Marines Michael and Nicole Roushion are now first-time homeowners and stepped
into their new home for the first time last week
– which was a dream come true.
“The battle is to beat poverty and help all
veterans have a home and a job,” said Killoran of
Habitat’s mission on Veterans Day.

In another great tribute to veterans and the
men and women serving our country overseas,
Crestwood Cub Scout Pack 6 and veterans from
American Legion Ernest Pasqua Post joined to
send Thanksgiving care packages to troops abroad.
This is the third year of this effort, which has
shipped more than 300 packages over the course
of three years, including 120 packages this year.
All of the volunteers lent a hand at the Annunciation School Gym to package up the donations,
and to fold an American flag into a tight triangle,
which can be put in every service man and woman’s pocket.

School 17 Stands Up
To Bullying in Yonkers
Staff and students at School 17 are
committed to preventing bullying, and
on Oct. 22, the entire staff and students
wore orange and hosted several events
to spread the word about the negative
effects of bullying. Students created
and signed a pledge that will serve to
remind them why they should not tolerate bullying.
Students came up with the following phrases:
1. At School 17, bullies always
pay and never get away.
2. Together, we stand against bullying.
3. A compliment goes a long way.
4. School 17 is bully-free because
we are family.
5. Being kind is always on our
mind.
6. Bullying ends with me.
7. Step up so that bullies step
down.
Students at School 17 were reminded that bullying hurts people and
is not nice. Through a short poem, students remember the simple steps one
can take to be a good friend:
I can be a friend, when you are
feeling blue.
I can be a friend by smiling at you.
I can be a friend every single day.
We can be great friends, what do
you say?

Students Build Benches
For Senior Citizens

Yonkers senior citizens who live in the
Western Avenue apartments and who have
been asking to have their benches replaced
for some time finally got their wish, thanks to
City Council Minority Leader Michael Sabatino and his staff and students from Saunders
High School.
In response to the request, Sabatino’s
office contacted Saunders H.S. shop teacher
Mark Riccettson, who – along with his carpentry class students – built the benches,
which were picked up by the Municipal Housing Authority for weather proofing.

Mayor Mike Spano and the City of Yonkers paid a fitting tribute to one of their native
sons, and one of Hollywood’s legendary enter-
tainers, when they renamed the corner of Main
Street and Riverdale Avenue in downtown Yonkers as Sid Caesar Way.
Sid, who died in February at the age of 91,
“was very proud of his Jewish cultural roots and
was deeply sentimental with regard to the city
of his birth, Yonkers,” said Eddie Friedfeld a
friend who helped Sid write his autobiography.

fet, where the family worked and lived upstairs.
It was in that eatery, and on that corner, that Sid
Caesar began to experiment with the comedy
that made all of America laugh for decades. The
old RKO Proctor Theater on South Broadway
was another Yonkers locale that Sid fondly remembered as having a strong influence on his
comedic genius.
Sid attended PS 10, Hawthorne Junior
High School and Yonkers High School, and one
of his most prized possessions was the key to
the city given to him by Mayor Mike Spano in
2012 on his 90th birthday.
At the young age of 8, Sid was already
working on what would later become his famous
“double talk” of imitating the many foreign languages spoken in Yonkers without knowing a
word of many of the languages he mimicked.
After serving in the Coast Guard during
World War II, his career took off with hit television shows, including “Your Show of Shows”
(1950-54), “Caesar’s Hour” (1954-57) and
“Sid Caesar Invites You” 1958, making him an
American favorite.
Sid’s fans included Albert Einstein and
Alfred Hitchcock, who said he was the funniest performer since Charlie Chaplin. He is also
credited with introducing the Yiddish word
Chutzpah into the American vernacular.
The Caesar family joined with friends and
Mayor Spano, City Council President Liam
McLaughlin and many other elected officials
to raise the street sign at one of Yonkers’ most
important crossroads, providing a fitting tribute
was given to another Yonkers legend – lost but
never forgotten. Thousands of Yonkers residents will now pass by and look up and remember, and laugh or smile, for Sid Caesar.

Service Returns for 7th Year

The national holiday of Thanksgiving provides the diverse City of Yonkers the opportunity to be grateful for all it has. This year, the seventh annual Yonkers Interfaith Service will take
place Monday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s
Episcopal Church, the first church founded in
Yonkers, located at 1 Hudson St., at the corner
of South Broadway.
There will be a reception afterward.
Civic, religious and community organization leaders are invited to participate in this annual event, sit on the dais, and wear traditional
clothing from their religious or ethnic traditions.
It would be helpful – but is not necessary – for
participants to RSVP. Some community leaders
will be invited to offer prayers, readings and
meditations authentic to their diverse traditions.
Years past have seen the participation of
Roman Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Protestant,
Baha’i, Orthodox Christian, Anglican and Ethical Cultural Society participants.
Civic leaders who attend should sign in
upon arrival, and they will be invited to read
portions of the original proclamation of Thanksgiving Day.
The theme of the service is “With Grateful
Hearts” and there will be a collection for those
who are food insecure. The collection of both
cash and food donations will go to support the
Yonkers Food Center, a collaborative food pantry run by the Yonkers Council of Churches and
the Salvation Army.
Tutor Volunteers Needed
TASC Connect!, a successful one-on-one
tutoring program serving adults seeking a high
school equivalency diploma, is looking for tutors
for its popular Thursday evening sessions, which
run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Yonkers Riverfront Library.

Community Council Meets
The Third Precinct Police Community
Council will hold its regular monthly meeting

Yonkers area are urged to attend.

Poor Man’s Studio
Debuts ‘Borderline Jams’
A new venue called Borderline Jams, which
is produced by Poor Man’s Studio, will be at the
Heritage Restaurant and Bar every Tuesday night
at 9 p.m. to midnight and is hosted by members
of the club: Rock Guerrero on keyboards and
guitar, Mister Fred on bass and Larry Sticks on
drums – all of whom take turns on lead vocals.
Borderline James gives the opportunity for
all types of musicians to play with the host band
while supplying the full backline for individuals to be able to just plug in and jam. Focusing
mainly on rock and the blues, this is a chance for
musicians to jam publicly in their neighborhoods
and find other musicians with similar interests
and talents.
Poor Man’s Studio is a relaxed and comfortable rehearsal space that allows local bands the
opportunity to record within a professional studio. Located right on the border of Yonkers and
Bronx, the rehearsal space/recording studio is set
up for all types of music and bands, including
acoustic, and can accommodate up to eight-piece
bands.
Individual musicians need to supply their
own instruments, cables and drum sticks. A selection of keyboards, amps, full PA system and
two full Pearl maple drum sets are available for
use.

Nov. 17, 1892: Thousands of Yonkers Democrats celebrated the presidential election victory
of Grover Cleveland with a parade.
Nov. 17, 1917: More than 250 Yonkers
Scouts attended the annual Boy Scout fall rally
at Pelton Field. Judging the sporting events were
local notables Messrs. McCrudden, Ducey, Arnold and James.
Tuesday, Nov. 18
Nov. 18, 1777: British Gen. Tryon sent Hessians troops to pillage and burn homes in Philipse Manor.
Nov. 18, 1901: Yonkers pigeons took top
prizes at the Washington Poultry, Pigeons and
Belgian Hare Association. George Eickemeyer
won 13 awards for this his pigmy pouters, including the silver challenge cup for the most
typical pigmy in the show. James Blair won nine
special prizes for his fantails, including the best
old fantail in the show.
Nov. 18, 1918: All Yonkers boys between
17 and 19 were told to enroll for military training
under the State Military Law, in order to legally
work or attend school.
Nov. 18, 1918: The Yonkers branch of the
American Red Cross announced it had shipped
35,419 surgical dressings, 4,200 influenza
masks, 2,701 refugee garments, 745 sweater and
1,015 pairs of socks overseas during October.
Nov. 18, 1922: John Philip Sousa and the
Sousa Band performed at the State Armory on
North Broadway.
Wednesday, Nov. 19
Nov. 19, 1776: British troops embarked
from the mouth of the Nepperhan to attack Fort
Constitution (Fort Lee). The attack was successful.
Nov. 19, 1904: Members of Camp Six of
the Patriotic Order of Americans held a hattrimming and nail-driving contest in Washington
Hall, with the men trimming the hats and the
women driving the nails. William Dykes, Hugh
Gibson, Lydia Harrigan and Gertrude Lankester
won top prizes.
Nov. 19, 1918: Yonkers manufacturers, including Otis Elevator, Waring Hat and Alexander
Smith and Sons Carpet Companies, announced
they would re-employ all the soldiers and sailors
who worked for them before enlistment.
Nov. 19, 1925: New York Central Railroad
sought permission to suspend service on the Putnam Division between the Park Hill and Getty
Square stations while electrification was in progress. The railroad stated there would be no inconvenience, as people could take trolleys to reach
the Park Hill Station.
Thursday, Nov. 20
Nov. 20, 1913: Twenty-five members of the
Yonkers Motorcycle Club joined the Hollywood
Inn and made the inn their headquarters.
Nov. 20, 1915: Actor Richard Bennett purchased a large Georgian brick house on Park Hill
Avenue, and announced this is to be his permanent home. In 1903 he married his second wife,
Adrienne Morrison, and together they had three
daughters, Constance, Barbara and Joan. They
were divorced in 1925.
Friday, Nov. 21
Nov. 21, 1904: A petition signed by 36 patrolmen was presented to the Board of Police
Commissioners, requesting the discontinuance
of the wagon patrol from December to April.
Nov. 21, 1918: It was announced that the
women of Yonkers sold 1,237,700 worth of
Liberty Loans during the Fourth Liberty Loan

drive. More than 600 members of the Yonkers
Women’s Liberty Loan committee canvassed for
the fund.
Saturday, Nov. 22
Nov. 22, 1913: The Yonkers High School
football team defeated Mount Vernon High
School to win the interscholastic football championship of Westchester County. The final score
was 12 to 3, and was labeled a fast and cleanly
played game, with Yonkers dominating play
in every quarter. Lenox Day was captain, E.H.
Hastings was coach and Frank Brady was manager.
Nov. 22, 1920: The Yonkers Merchants Association kicked off what was called the “Greatest, Red Blooded, Warm Hearted Popularity
Contest Ever Undertaken in the City of Yonkers.” The four winners would receive either a
Columbia touring car, a 12-piece bedroom suite,
a Lexington player piano or a 147-piece chest of
Gorham Silver.
The public received one vote for every 10
cents they spent with any of 30 members of the
Merchants Association during the six-week voting competition for their favorite policeman,
fireman, postman or schoolteacher.
Sunday, Nov. 23
Nov. 23, 1902: Mounted Officer Burns arrested a horse thief on Mile Square Road, after
hearing the clatter of hoofs and seeing a man in a
light sidebar runabout with cushion tires driving
a speedy bay horse at a fast clip. Investigation
showed that the horse was the property of an Ossining man.
Nov. 23, 1912: The third annual show of the
Westchester Fanciers’ Club was held in the Yonkers Armory. Mrs. Sidney Dobson won all prizes
for black bantams, as well as the J. Prescott Gage
cup for the best display of any variety by the wife
of any member of the Yonkers Club.
Nov. 23, 1920: The William Thomas Grant
store in Getty Square, built on the site of the old
Flagg building, officially opened. Grant opened
his first “W.T. Grant Co. 25 Cent Store” in 1906,
based on the philosophy of selling people what
they needed at prices they could afford, earning
only a modest profit. This philosophy proved
successful, as at the company’s height, there
were nearly 1,200 W.T. Grant stores.

Should Obama Apologize for
His Failed Foreign Policy?
The defining moment when many Americans decided that President Barack Obama
cannot be trusted to protect our national security came in August. Obama had just announced on television the beheading of American journalist James Foley, a former writer
for Stars and Stripes. The president immediately climbed into a golf cart, where he was
photographed for all the world to gaze upon,
with a simpering grin on his face.
The electoral rout of the Democrats was
not singularly based on foreign policy, although polls by the Obama-worshipping New
York Times reveal that a substantial majority
of Americans see the president’s foreign policy as incompetent. Obama said his policies
were on the ballot, but he did not repeat that
after the ballots were counted.
The president’s disdain for the feelings of
Americans who had just witnessed on television the brutal murder of a fellow citizen was
no isolated gaffe. Obama had sent Eric Holder
– the most dishonest attorney general since
John Mitchell – to Ferguson, Missouri, to help
Al Sharpton, the Administration’s favored
pastor, gin up election eve racial discord.
The White House sent no representative
to the memorial service for Foley in Washington, D.C.
A World View Based on
Ideology and Ignorance
Obama’s world view is based on Leftist
ideology exacerbated by ignorance of how
the world works. From Day One, Obama has
careened from one foreign policy disaster to
another. The main event is Obama’s complete
mishandling of the over-riding threat: Iran’s
pursuit of nuclear weaponry.
Obama “negotiated” with Iran through
two spectacular incompetents: (1) UnderSecretary Wendy Sherman, who gave North
Korea everything it wanted and then seemed
stupefied to be double-crossed; and (2) EU
politician Catherine Ashton, whose political
career was based on the wacko notion that
only the Soviets, but not western democracies, should have nukes.
The Iran “negotiations” are supposed to
conclude by Nov. 24, but there is reason to
believe the “deadline” will be punted downfield. Iran knows Obama will not apply pressure during “negotiations.”
Tehran has used this insight shrewdly for
interminable delay while it works on developing nukes, and Obama has brazenly lied about
dealing with Iran while reducing sanctions
without concessions from Tehran. The IAEA
says Iran continues to stonewall inspections.
The president initially vowed that “all
options are on the table” to compel Iran to
dismantle its pursuit of nukes. However, this
vow evaporated into a proposed deal granting
Tehran thousands of centrifuges with breakout capacity to rapidly produce nukes. We
don’t even know if the Mullahs will accept
this pitiful crumbling of Obama’s vow.
Further, Obama has helped give away
the store by acting like a lovelorn teenager in
pursuing serial unrequited overtures to Iran’s
supreme leader (none of which have even
been answered by the haughty Ayatollah, who
contemptuously ridicules American weakness
and begging).

Secret Diplomacy Leaving
Our Allies in the Dark
Last week, it was revealed that Obama
sent Khamenei a “secret” letter begging for
help against Islamic State terrorists in tandem
with a nuke deal. The White House – trashing
its promises to be “the most transparent Administration in history” – claims this is a “private letter” whose contents are confidential.
No wonder! Our regional allies – principally Israel (whom Iran repeatedly threatens
to annihilate) and Saudi Arabia – have reason
for outrage that Obama is seeking deals with
their arch-enemy behind their backs. This is
compounded by the reality that the White
House disparages Israel, the only regional
democracy, with execrable language not directed at any other country.
Obama is trying to make an end run
around Congress in his Iran dealings, but Senators Menendez and Kirk will try to enforce
the constitutional mandate that treaties are
subject to Senate approval.
Obama might not be playing catch-up by
secretly courting Iran, had he not blundered
by: (1) precipitously withdrawing all U.S.
forces from Iraq against the advice of his
own secretaries of defense, Republican Gates
and Democrat Panetta; and (2) scandalously
misunderstanding IS as “the Jayvees” as they
gobbled up large swaths of Syria and Iraq.
These blunders are related to another
Obama disaster – his refusal to act against
Syria after it violated his own “red lines”
by using chemical weapons against its own
citizens. That blunder convinced most of the
world that American promises mean nothing
and that Obama lacks integrity.
Recognizing the complexity of multi-factional Syria, it remains possible that decisive
early American action could have removed
the brutal Assad kleptocracy with the access
to the Mediterranean that it grants Iran and
Russia. Obama’s tardiness in comprehending
this led to his hasty post-election doubling
of U.S. “advisers” in Iraq, who are seriously
jeopardized by failure to seal a Status of Forces agreement.
Should the President Apologize to Us?
Obama has blundered elsewhere: (1) In
trying to keep the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood in power in Egypt; and (2) by doublecrossing Democratic allies Poland and Czech
Republic on missile defense in return for a
fraudulent “reset” with Russia. Didn’t that
reset inhibit Putin from aggression against
Ukraine?
Obama’s maneuvering to remove Egyptian President Mubarak showed Mideast
leaders that the U.S. has no loyalty to allies
who keep the peace. Equally appalling were
his failed efforts to reinstate the pro-terrorist
Muslim Brotherhood after the Egyptian people ejected them from power.
The U.S. has no respect at the U.N.,
where thuggish anti-American Venezuela
was just elected to the Security Council, and
rogue nations like Cuba and Venezuela make
a mockery of the Human Rights Council (toward which the U.S. should resume the G.W.
Bush boycott).
Obama has bragged that his closest friend
in the Mideast is Turkish President Erdogan,
a Hamas-supporting Islamist who is destroying Turkish democracy while subverting support for Kurds battling IS. Obama’s efforts to
shrink our military encourage our enemies.
Obama commenced his presidency by
journeying to Cairo to apologize to the Muslim world on behalf of the United States.
The response was a spate of terrorist attacks
and beheadings, some on American soil. The
American people understand that Obama’s
foreign policy is a mass disaster which endangers our security. Perhaps he should stand up
and apologize to us.

During the nine-week training period,
Grant received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet
training, chemical warfare, field training and
tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat,
military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions and

Army Pvt. Issac Osei-Acheampong, son
of Augustine Okyere of Yonkers, has graduated from One Station Unit Training at the U.S.
Army Infantry School in Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training.
During basic training, Osei-Acheampong
received instruction in drill and ceremonies,
military customs and courtesies, map reading,
tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training and first aid. He developed
combat skills and handled various weapons
available to the infantry soldier.
During AIT, the soldier received instruction to serve as an infantryman using light and
heavy anti-armor weapons, indirect-fire support and mechanized operations while assigned
to a rifle or mortar squad. The training included weapons qualification, tactics, patrolling,
navigation, field communications and combat
operations; engagement in infantry combat exercises, battle drills, land mine locating, neutralizing and extracting; and survival operations during a nuclear, biological or chemical
attack.

The Yonkers Animal Shelter has many
pets available for adoption.
Bradley is a 1-year-old, mixed breed dog
who weights about 45 pounds. He has been at
the shelter about a month and has become an
instant star – a favorite of volunteers and staff
alike. He is a quiet, rather calm dog who gets
along with cats, as well as dogs. Bradley He
has liked everyone he has met!
He likes to play and chase a ball and even
seems to know that he is supposed to bring it
back to his person. He also likes to cuddle and
would probably enjoy having a person to relax
and watch television with after his playtime.
Bradley would make a fine companion for

Joe Dillon. Initial results on election night
had Latimer with a comfortable 55-45 percent
lead, with 80 percent of the vote counted.
But after the Yonkers results came in, and
paper ballots were counted, the final results
had Latimer with 51.2 percent of the vote and
Dillon with 48.8 percent, and a much closer
final result than anyone had expected.

this holiday season.
Cub Scout Pack 6 also held a brief Veteran’s
Day ceremony for those in attendance who have
served our country.

solar panels. Killoran raised funds and collected
donations of materials and labor to build not only
these homes for veterans in Yonkers, but many
other homes throughout Westchester.
Veterans are a large part of who Habitat
helps, as well as a large part of its volunteers
corps, as 10 veterans were hired to work on the
Roushions’ new home. Habitat has also repaired
many veterans’ homes, as well as local American
Legion and VFW Posts.
“I have never witnessed a home being built
from the ground up, and to be witnessing my
home being built by Habitat for Humanity is simply a blessing,” said Michael Roushion. “I am so
thankful.”
The Habitat team is never done, and after
completing one project is on to the next. For Killoran, and Habitat, there are too many veterans
– and residents in Westchester County – without a
home to call their own; Habitat-Westchester gearing up to begin its build of more veteran homes on
Purser Place in Yonkers.

Close to 600 guests gathered Nov. 4 at
the Marriott Marquis for the ALS Association
Greater New York Chapter’s 20th annual Lou
Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit. The event raised
$1 million, with proceeds going to the fight
against ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Honorees included former New York
Yankee Don Mattingly, former New York Met
Keith Hernandez, and former Pittsburgh Steeler
Franco Harris.
“We are grateful to our supporters for their
commitment over the last 20 years,” said Dorine Gordon, president and CEO of the ALS
Association Greater New York Chapter. “We
continue to fulfill our mission of fighting this
terrible disease by funding research and provid-
ing care for our patients and their families.”
Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal, general
partner and vice chairperson of the New York
Yankees and president of the New York Yankees Foundation; and Liz Martin, director of
team partnerships for Steiner Sports Memorabilia, Inc., presented a check for $30,000, which
was raised from a special New York Yankee
game-worn jersey auction conducted by Steiner
Sports.
This special auction took place July 2, in
commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Lou
Gehrig’s farewell speech.

More than 1,500 participants came out to
Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway on Oct.
26 to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, with
well over $500,000 raised by different groups, organizations and families.
Empire City Vice President and COO Bob
Galterio’s daughter Cara was diagnosed with type
1 diabetes at age 9, and the long-time executive
was immediately compelled to take action to fight
the disease. So, “Cure for Cara” was born, with
Galterio serving as captain of the Cure for Cara
team, which has raised $437,000 to date from the
walk.
“It is so important to be working alongside
JDRF on such an important goal: curing a disease
in which 80 people are diagnosed with every day,”
said Galterio. “JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes is a
morning full of celebration, community and families gathering together to support their loved ones
with type 1 diabetes.”
“JDRF is immensely appreciative of Empire
City’s participation,” said JDRF Executive Director Margie Ostrower. “This is corporate citizenship at its finest. The commitment of Bob Galterio and his employees enables us to accelerate
research to find a cure for diabetes. Insulin is not
a cure, merely life support for the estimated 3 million Americans suffering from type 1 diabetes and
its complications. Research is the only answer.”
JDRF walks were held in more than 200 cities worldwide, with donations going to JDRF’s
efforts to fund scientific research to better treat,
prevent and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes.

George Oros, chief of staff to County Executive Rob Astorino, presents proclamations to
John Bartunek, president of the Yonkers Kiwanis, and Frank Riti, lieutenant governor of
the Bronx-Westchester Kiwanis South Division, at the Yonkers Kiwanis’ 85th anniversary
celebration at Westchester Manor on Oct. 24. Kiwanis is a global service organization of
volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Over
the years, both Kiwanis groups have completed many projects and programs for kids and

Aisling Executive Director Orla Kelleher
gave a presentation about the work being done
at the center and its future goals, and Deenihan
was presented with two gifts by Agnes Delaney,
chairperson of the Board of Directors.
Deenihan accepted a copy of the book,
“While Mem’ry Brings Us Back Again,” a
compiled volume of memoirs by 35 Irish immigrants who came to the U.S. between 1927 and
1964, completed in 2006 by Frances Browner
of the Aisling Center.
He was also given the DVD, “Memory
Brings Us Back: Irish Stories of Farewells and
Fortunes,” a documentary profile of the immigrant experience of 10 men and women who left
Ireland for the U.S. during 1929 and 1965.
Dawn Doherty, who teaches music and
singing at the Aisling Center, played selections
on her flute and five students from the Bridget
Flynn School of Irish Dance performed.

While in Puerto Rico for the annual Somos
El Futuro Legislative Conference, Assemblymember Shelley Mayer, along with Eduardo Laguerre,
founder of the Yonkers Charter School of Educational Excellence, and Carmen Goldberg and Sobeida Cruz, spent several hours touring a unique
specialized high school and learned how Puerto
Rico prepares high school students for professional careers in television, film and radio production.
Through the coordination of the League of
United Latin American Citizens, New York State
LULAC Director LaGuerre and the others visited
the unique Juan J. Osono School, a specialized
school for radio and TV production, and met with
the students, principal and staff of this unique high
school.
The school – the only one of its kind in Puerto Rico – educates approximately 200 students
with a combination of academic and specialized
media curriculum to prepare graduates to go on to
college or to work directly in the film, TV or radio field. The highly motivated students and staff
provided a tour of their facilities, which included
an interview of Mayer on their own school radio
station in Spanish.
They also demonstrated film techniques, their
cooperative classroom methods, and reflected on
their commitment to obtaining advanced education in the fields of communication. The school
tour provided the visitors with an excellent model
of specialized high school trade and career readiness training.
