5th Pointers
Conference
11th - 12th December 2014
Cardiff City Hall
The 5th POINTERS Conference highlights the prevention
of bloodborne viruses (BBVs) in the healthcare setting.
This year’s conference will be held on the 11th - 12th
December 2014 at the beautiful Cardiff City Hall.
Risks of bloodborne virus (BBV) infections remain of
great concern in the healthcare setting. As its name
indicates, POINTERS (Prevention of Occupational
Infections, Treatment and Reporting Strategies) is
focused not only on information on the elimination
and prevention of healthcare worker exposures
to BBVs and other infections, but also on raising
awareness in order to improve the reporting, follow-up
and management of exposures and occupationally
acquired BBV infections.
This conference is a result of a unique collaboration
between the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) and
the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). The
conference is supported by Public Health England,
Public Health Wales and the Welsh Government.
These organisations have a commitment to healthcare
and have worked together to provide a fascinating
and topical programme considering BBV infection and
other infectious diseases in a healthcare setting.
• This will be closely followed by ”Advances in the treatment of
HCV; What’s new?” by Dr Ashley Brown.
• The topic of Vicky Mason’s session is ”A two year retrospective
audit of HIV PEP prescribing from the Emergency and
Occupational Health Departments within two NHS London
Trusts”.
• The first day will close with a round table group discussion led
by Dr Melvina Woode Owusu followed by a feedback and sum
up from Dr Fortune Ncube.
Day 2 – Friday 12th December
• The second day starts with a keynote lecture from Professor
Lucille Blumberg entitled ”Occupational Transmission of Viral
Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF): How do we protect our healthcare
workers?”.
• This is followed by sessions focusing on BBV in the Healthcare
Setting and their Management. The first of these sessions is by
Dr Siew Lin Ngui with a session on ”The Role of Phylogenetic
Analysis in the Healthcare Setting” followed by Dr Lika Nehaul,
Dr Gill Richardson and Mr Brendan Mason with a session on
”HCV Look back, A Detective Art”. The morning sessions will
be brought to a close by Dr Margaret Fitzgerald with a session
entitled ”Possible in-hospital Transmission of Hepatitis (B/C) in
Southern Ireland”.
• The afternoon will begin with sessions pertaining to TB
and Influenza and Vaccine Preventable Infectious Disease
Management in Healthcare Workers with the first session
coming from Dr Richard Pebody on ”Strategies to Improve Flu
Vaccine Uptake”.
• Followed by a session on ”Tuberculosis in healthcare workersMissed Opportunities for Prevention” by Dr Lucy Thomas and
Jennifer Davidson.
• The conference will close with a panel and open discussion
led by Professor Noel Gill. This will enable delegates to ask
questions of the expert panel, listen to the experiences and
advice of others.
The conference is backed by the most
comprehensive exhibition of products and
services aimed at reducing BBV infection in
healthcare workers.
