Upcoming Events Take Back The Night Friday, 14th November 6:30 PM Town Hall, Sturt Street, Ballarat 2015 International Summit 16th – 19th July 2015 Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast Chapter Newsletter November 2014 Message from the President’s Desk WE ARE IN SWOTVAC!! This signals only a few weeks to go and it’s the end of another year! The end of an entire program for some, finalising the last minute assignments and preparing for the last exams EVER!! How very exciting, and nerve wracking all in the same moment! The stress of exams will nearly be over and we can all enjoy the summer break to….. work??!! HUH? Yep, summer will only happen on the weekends because I’ll be back to work – bills don’t pay themselves and car rego is due just before Christmas – whose idea was THAT? Haha I do hope you have enjoyed our newsletter for 2014, please be very careful over the summer break and I look forward to seeing you at our opening events in the new year – starting with O-week meetand-greets and our monthly Pot n Parma lunches, kicking off as a new members celebratory function! Lots of exciting and fun opportunities to attend, meeting fellow Golden Key’ers and volunteering to help those around you! Especially if you are from a federated campus – Gippsland, Horsham, Melbourne – new social events are being planned for you too! Don’t forget to apply for your 2015 International Summit Travel Grant either, (being held on the Gold Coast 16-19 July 2015). FedUni GK will be a force to be reckoned with if we turn up en masse! Let’s show the other larger universities what we are made of! Scholarships are $500 and should cover the conference fee and air travel. If we ask Student Connect Leadership nicely, maybe they will kick in leadership funding? (hint hint!). Also, we will be running BBQs throughout the semester to raise money too, so make sure you get involved! Til February, stay safe and have a great break! Academic Breakfast On Thursday 6th November our Executive Committee attended an Academic Breakfast hosted by Dr Sam Henson, Head of campus for Ballarat. Also in attendance were some of the University senior management team, as well as our Chapter Advisor Deborah Cutts. Deborah presented to the group the key achievements of Golden Key at the international level for 2014, whilst committee members spoke about the achievements of the chapter at the local level and presented plans for 2015. “This is a great opportunity for us to let the University Senior Management team and key stakeholders know what we have achieved this year” said Lisa. “Our chapter adds value to the student experience, gives students something to strive for, as well as having some real impacts with the local community through our endeavours in upholding the Chapter Standards”. FedUni SPARK a change project Wednesday 22nd October saw the Year 6 students from Chewton Primary School come to Fed Uni as "Uni Students for a day" as part of the Golden Key SPARK a Change program. The day kicked off with a scenic bus ride over from Chewton, with students enjoying both the "inflight morning tea" and the scenery along the way. Upon arrival at the Uni, first port of call was a trip through time under the guidance of Dr. David Waldron, who had brought in a some of his personal collection of armour and weaponry, ranging from Roman times right through to the American Civil War. David not only enthralled the students with the history of the artefacts, but also provided the opportunity for some of the students, and their teacher Scott Purdon, to dress up in the armour and weapons. This introduction to experimental archaeology was to prove a highlight of the day, and was a great beginning to their to University adventure. This session was followed by a tour of the ancillary services such as Aboriginal Education Centre and the Student Experience Office, where the students were able to meet some of the key people that work tirelessly behind the scenes at Fed Uni. Next stop on the agenda was a tour through the science facilities in the Y building with Dr Scott Nankervis, where the "stinky" bio-med room, along with the automatic hand washing facilities proved to be a great hit! Next stop was a Fed Uni tradition, time for a pot (of lemonade!) and a parma. Considering that Chewton has no tuck shop facilities at all, having a pot and parma was certainly a different experience for the students, and was a talking point on the bus ride home. Lunch was followed by a library tour and the chance to explore a wide range of books. Chewton has an exceptionally strong literacy program, and the time spent browsing the books was greatly appreciated, and a real eye opener for the students. No visit to Fed Uni would have been complete without a visit to the Student Lounge, and it was here by chance the students ran into one of the 2nd year P.E. students who put on a display of magic and card tricks that left everyone spellbound! The original object of the day was to provide students from a very small school the chance to see an option for the future after they finish high school. What was actually achieved was so much more; the feedback from the students was "best day ever", and their attitudes towards University had been completely transformed, with doubts transformed into positives, and a genuine spark has been ignited. This day could not have happened without the support of some very special people, and our heartfelt thanks go to the following people: "Jeff the bus-driver", Dr. David Waldron, Dr Scott Nankervis, Ellen Sabo, Naomi Biggs, Chloe Jackson, Bonnie Chew and Deb Cutts. Thank you all for your kindness, time, support and willingness to SPARK a change! The mission of SPARK a Change is to bring all our chapters together towards a common objective: to impact and improve the lives of at- risk youth across the globe through literacy, education and real-world preparedness. We encourage everyone to view the launch video on YouTube and think about the ways in which you can make a difference in the lives of people that may not have had the opportunities for education that we have had. It is estimated that one in five adults in the world cannot read or write. Even among those who are literate, many face challenges in receiving a quality education. As a society that recognizes the importance of education, Golden Key identifies literacy, education and real world preparedness skills as rights that everyone is entitled to. In an attempt to improve the lives of those who are not fortunate enough to receive a quality education or have tough circumstances to overcome, Golden Key’s SPARK a Change will give members, advisors and volunteers the opportunity to help youth who may not have the resources to reach their full potential. With the creation of SPARK a Change, Golden Key projects that our chapters will help us complete our goal of more than $40,000 raised, 400,000 hours of service performed and the lives of more than 400,000 people affected by the year 2017! Golden Key will also give out scholarships totally $1,000 this year to chapters who have the greatest impact in their communities. When all of our chapters can work together towards a common goal, we can truly move the needle on important societal issues. We are so excited to see all the wonderful projects that our members get involved in. YOU can SPARK a Change!
