At Clark, we serve as facilitators and friends for all residents with dementia and as support systems and educators for our community. The Pathway to Caregiving Conference is specifically designed to assist those persons who are caring for loved ones with dementia in their own homes or other community settings. This is part of Clark’s strong commitment to reach beyond our walls into the general community and provide a resource and education to aide in the caregiving journey. Giordani, Ph.D Professor and Chief Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, University of Michigan Health System In this opening session, Dr. Giordani will provide the latest statistics related to Alzheimer’s, the current efforts in research, and the benefits of getting a diagnosis early. Dementia Assessment: Why It’s Important Presented by: Dr. Kevin Foley, MD Medical Director of Saint Mary’s Health Care Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Service in the Neuroscience Program This session will cover what a cognitive assessment is and why it is important. Dr. Foley will also explore the benefits of an early memory loss diagnosis. What to Expect After a Dementia Diagnosis Presented by: Dr. Bruno J. Giordani, Ph.D Professor and Chief Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, University of Michigan Health System Dr. Bruno Giordani will discuss important topics that patients and families should consider when they are beginning their journey with dementia. Information and tips for understanding your diagnosis, partnering with your doctor, arranging financial and legal documents, maintaining social supports, managing caregiver stress, and preserving well-being will be explored. A3 - Taking Care of Miss Bee Bee Presented By: Cheryl Edwards-Cannon, Daughter Extraordinaire Enjoy this comical look at what dementia has taught one caregiver about taking care of a loved one with memory loss. Be prepared to laugh and enjoy the stories of how this daughter extraordinaire navigated the maze of caregiving frustration. A4 - Dementia: Patient, Family and Beyond Presented By: Dr. Simin N. Beg, MD Medical Director, Spectrum Health Hospice Dr. Beg will discuss the care of the dementia patient, the different life changes that occur for family members and caregivers, collaboration with the medical community and navigating the disease throughout the journey. B1 - Maintaining Mobility, Vigor, and Self-care Presented By: Amy Mulwa, RN, Nursing Education Coordinator, Clark Retirement Community Jane P. Streb PT, MS, Physical Therapist, Clark Retirement Community If you don’t use it you lose it! Maintaining mobility and self-care will help maximize your ability to live a vibrant life. This session will explore these benefits and teach you how to maintain mobility, vigor and self-care for you and the person you are caring for. B2 - Communication: A Key in Caring Presented By: Chris Simons, Director of Dementia Services, Clark Retirement Community Jan Slot, RN, Director of Resident Services, Clark Retirement Community Participants will learn proven techniques to communicate with a person with memory loss in this workshop. We will also explore: changes that occur within the brain, how to keep families and friends current with changes, and how families and friends can respond to their loved one with memory loss. B3 - Guidelines for the Treatment of Dementia Presented By: Kyle Baker, Pharm.D., Mercy Health-Saint Mary's Long Term Care and Home Infusion This presentation will give you an overview of current medications used in the treatment of dementia and side effects associated with these medications. This discussion will help patients and caregivers become more comfortable in their treatment decisions. B4 - The Preservation of Joy: Exploring Well-being Presented By: Miranda Ward, Personal Services Manager, Clark at Home In this workshop participants will discover how to enhance the quality of life for individuals with memory loss and for themselves through hands on applications. We will explore various areas of well-being. B5 - How Do You Want to Live? Presented By: Rev. Jan Lancaster, B.S. RN, RN Case Manager, Emmanuel Hospice We will discuss the importance of goals and preferences regarding advance directives. You will learn tips for starting, having, and continuing the conversation, along with the value of Hospice and Palliative care. C1 - Mindfulness: Peace in the Midst of Chaos Presented by: Carol Hendershot, Co-founder, Certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness Sometimes we wonder what happened and why, we worry about the future and get overloaded by the demands of each day. You will discover how mindfulness can bring moments of beauty and tranquility, even on the most challenging days. C2 - Behavioral Expressions of Dementia Presented by: Chris Simons, Director of Dementia Services, Clark Retirement Community Jan Slot, RN, Director of Resident Services, Clark Retirement Community What is the person with dementia experiencing? A look at interpreting needs through behavior and nonverbal communication. You will learn how you as the caregiver can respond to these needs. C3 - Music Therapy: Mind, Body, and Soul Presented by: Alisha Snyder, Music Therapist, Franciscan Life Process Center You will discover what music therapy is and how it can benefit not only persons with memory loss, but also caregivers. This presentation will include experiential interventions. C4 - “I Know He has Dementia but Why is He Doing That?” Presented by: Joy Spahn, Regional Director, Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Michigan Chapter C2a loved one's dementia progresses, changes in mood, personality and behaviors can be As challenging and sometimes frustrating for the care partner. This interactive presentation will provide insight into why these changes occur and some approaches to help manage them. C5 - Fitness for the Caregiver Presented by: John R. Stevenson, Ph.D, Professor of Physical Therapy, Grand Valley State University Caregivers, take care of yourself FIRST! This presentation will cover fitness basics and goals in addition to methods for improving fitness and health for caregivers. Self-care Through Music for the Caregiver Presented by: Alisha Snyder, Music Therapist, Franciscan Life Process Center Regroup with your fellow participants and let the music move you. During our final session you will have the opportunity to rejuvenate and practice self-care through music. It’s Never 2 Late IN2L - It’s Never 2 Late - Technology enhances life in many ways.
