Rutland Recreation
Winter Comments
I
recently attended our national conference
where I had the opportunity to absorb new
ideas, attend meetings and re-connect
with colleagues all over the U.S. The focus
nationally is on the importance local parks
and recreation plays in conservation, social
equity and health & wellness. In the words of
the National Recreation & Park Association
(NRPA):
Our nation’s local parks and recreation are
the gateways to healthy, prosperous and
connected communities. On any given day,
someone is being positively affected through
parks and recreation – whether they are
taking a walk on a trail or fitness class at the
community center, getting a nutritious meal or
just reaping the benefits of clean air and water
because of preserved open space.
The work of local parks and recreation takes
on some of our nation’s toughest challenges
like obesity, the economy and environmental
sustainability and offers solutions. Local
parks and recreation are uniquely positioned
to make significant contributions in these
areas, and do by providing critical front-line
services and resources.
How do we meet the Three Pillars of
Conservation, Health & Wellness and Social
Equity?
CONSERVATION
Our parks preserve natural areas for the
community to enjoy either through directly
visiting or in the visual appeal as you drive
by. We would miss Main Street Park if it was
developed with no green space to break up
Route 7 through Rutland. Pine Hill Park is a
refuge for enjoying a break from the urban
environment. Giorgetti, Monsignor Thomas
(Meadow St.), and Rotary provide access to
the water for fishing or cooling off on a hot
day. Our small neighborhood parks provide
recreation within walking distance of many
families.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Our programs and parks help combat the
complicated and expensive challenges of poor
nutrition, obesity and physical inactivity. We
like to get you moving!
SOCIAL EQUITY
Parks across the country were built on the
concept of universal access to public parks.
Everyone is welcome at a public park and our
fees for our facilities are kept reasonable. In
addition, we have scholarships available that
put all programs within the reach of every city
resident.
We make a difference in the lives of our city
residents and that drives us to continue to
raise the bar and provide top notch programs,
parks and facilities.
Yours in community,
Cindi Wight

Volunteer coaches are the backbone of the recreation department youth sports programs. We
appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteers over the years. Unfortunately, it has become
increasingly difficult to find an adequate number of volunteers each season. Effective
immediately, if there are an insufficient number of volunteers at the program start date, the
program may be delayed, amended or even canceled. Please note that participants fees for
our programs are based on adults stepping forward to volunteer; in the event that programs
have to move to paid staff, program fees will have to increase significantly. Please consider
volunteering…as a coach or a team parent..the opportunities are endless! The reward is
knowing that you made an investment in the future of our community…our children! The
recreation department can assist by offering written materials and coaching clinics.
Please contact Nicole Densmore 773-1822 for additional information.
