MEDIA ADVISORY Country Music Star Chris Young and Kidde Fire Safety to Announce National Campaign the Morning of The 48th CMA Awards National fire service, burn survivors and Country Music icon Kix Brooks will attend WHAT: Grammy nominated, RCA Records Nashville singer/songwriter Chris Young will join Kidde Fire Safety to promote a national fire safety campaign that will help protect families by donating Kidde’s Worry-Free smoke alarms and help burned firefighters by expanding the Phoenix SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) program. Run by the Phoenix Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping burn survivors, Phoenix SOAR for Firefighters is the first national initiative supporting burned firefighters. Kidde and Young will be joined by national and local fire service including Tulare (CA) Division Chief and SOAR-trained peer supporter, Louis Nevarez. Nevarez’s left forearm was amputated after a burn injury. Special guest, Kix Brooks, 2013’s CMA “National Broadcast Personality of the Year” winner also will attend. Brooks serves as a radio spokesperson for Kidde. Each week he honors a member of the U.S. police, fire or military service as his Hero of the Week on his national radio program, ‘American Country Countdown.’ WHY: Approximately 3,000 people die in U.S. home fires each year, and winter is the peak time. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports most fatal fires happen in homes with either no alarm or no working alarm, mainly due to dead or missing batteries. Installing working smoke alarms, like Kidde’s Worry-Free line and knowing simple fire safety steps helps protect families and firefighters. In 2012, the NFPA reported that 2,200 firefighters sustained in the line of duty burn injuries.
