THE BURLEITH BELL November 2014 Happy Thanksgiving from the Burleith Citizens Association Annual BCA Community Meeting Thursday, November 13 6:30–9:00 pm Washington International School Meet and greet neighbors, BCA Board, and community leaders Updates from BCA, DC Council, ANC2E, GU, and MPD Important vote on 2015 Board of Directors Q&A Complimentary refreshments, courtesy of the BCA (Visit www.burleith.org for updates.) Also coming Up Last Day of the Season for Glover Park-Burleith Farmers Market Saturday, November 22 Leaf Collection Through Saturday, December 13 Holiday Decorating Contest Week of December 14 (judging) Winter Gløgg Party Sunday, January 25, 4–6 pm EDITORIAL President’s Message This issue of the Burleith Bell covers a number of important Burleith Citizens Association events! Board members Alex Frederick and Liane Jones represented the BCA at the Georgetown University community fair and tailgate event on October 25. They staffed a table, answered questions, and shared information about Burleith with interested students, faculty, and staff. We thank GU’s special projects coordinator Candace Mosely for inviting us to this collegial event again this year. On October 26, kids and parents enjoyed the Halloween Tot Lot party. A huge thanks to Kay Langenbacher and her husband, Eric, for their yeoman work on this fun activity. Highlights and photo appear on page 4. More than two dozen residents and GU students showed up at our fall cleanup on November 1 to rake, pick up, throw away, and generally make Burleith a more beautiful neighborhood. Thank you, Janice Sims and team! See the photo on page 6. The BCA will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, November 13, 6:30–9:00 pm, at the Washington International School. This is the only meeting of the year where you can vote for the next year’s Board of Directors, review community achievements, and discuss key issues of concern. We are pleased that councilmember Jack Evans will kick off the meeting with an update on the state of DC and that Lauralyn Lee, GU associate vice-president for community engagement and strategic initiatives, and Cory Peterson, director of the Office of Neighborhood Life, will talk about GU/neighborhood matters. We will have two breaks for questions and answers and a final discussion at the end. I encourage you all to attend, vote, enjoy refreshments, and make your voices heard. The agenda, slate of officers, and FY 15 budget appear on page 3. On a less positive note, the board is aware that a number of residents have been bothered recently by loud day- and nightime parties. These disturbances are inconsistent with the quality-of-life goals that the BCA and GU agreed to as part of the 2010 Campus Plan; neither do they reflect the success we have had in mitigating noise issues in collaboration with GU through the Georgetown Community Partnership (GCP). As recent success was achieved by working through the GCP and cooperatively with GU’s Office of Neighborhood Life, the board and our ANC leadership reached out immediately to the university to discuss these troubling issues. Our candid conversations lead me to be optimistic that we will be able to resolve these challenges by working together, and that we will see results soon. The board will be very vigilant in working on your behalf, and I will keep you informed of our progress. It is important that you report noise incidents as Rich Field details on page 4 so that SNAP can respond, and the BCA can continue to monitor these incidents and engage in necessary follow-up. To locate landlord information, should you decide to write a letter, go to burleith.org and click on “Noise Reporting Procedures” (middle of the page). I look forward to seeing you at the community meeting and benefitting from your ideas and opinions. Nan Bell [email protected] Father John F. Payne (1961–2014) The BCA mourns the death of Father Payne, an outstanding leader and role model to students during his two decades of teaching and administrative service at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Liane is a member of the BCA Board, where she has done a great job managing advertising for the Burleith Bell and fundraising for community activities, including the summer picnic. Liane’s talents and energy will help the BCF reach its full potential as the BCF continues to work with the BCA, residents, and local community partners to build a stronger and more beautiful Burleith. Since 2008, the BCF has actively funded projects benefiting the neighborhood, including the landscaping of Ellington Field, walking tours of Burleith, our 90th anniversary celebration, innovative collaborations with resident artists, and this year’s restoration and rededication of the Daniel Boone monument on the Ellington School grounds. continued on page 4 THE BURLEITH BELL 3 Tot Lot Halloween Party COMMUNITY By Kay and Eric Langenbacher The annual Burleith Halloween party took place amidst sunny but windy weather on Sunday, October 26, at the Tot Lot on 35th Street. Approximately 30 children and their parents enjoyed the fun and games, which included dry ice bubbles, ball and ring tossing, temporary tattoos, and arts and crafts. Special thanks go to Lenore Rubino for donating organic treats and bringing Jess Lindeman, who helped the kids transform glue, borax, and coloring into slime. We also appreciate the assistance of Caitlin-Jean Juricic, Lucie and Marguerite Warga, Adam and Max Langenbacher, Doug McKnight, Devin Horne, and Jason DuPaul. We are especially grateful to Whole Foods for generously providing juice, fruit, and snacks and the BCA for its continued sponsorship and financial support. Photo by Kay Langenbacher. What YOU Can Do About Noise in Our Neighborhood By Rich Field You can become part of the solution to the noise problem if you do BOTH of the following when you are disturbed: First: Call the GU Helpline at 687-8413, 7 days a week, any time of day or night, to report noise, trash, or any other disturbance on the street or from any house. GU will then send SNAP or the GU police (the Department of Public Safety) to investigate and follow up with you if you wish. If GU students are not involved, GU will report the disturbance to the DC Metropolitan Police Department. Of course, in an emergency, or if the noise continues unabated, call 911. Then: Email [email protected] with the subject line “Noise.” Please include in your email these five pieces of information: 3. Description of the noise or other problem. 4. T he action you took and when (such as called the GU Helpline). 5. The result of that action, if any. It is very important that you take BOTH of the actions above— make the call to the Helpline AND send an email to the BCA. If you don’t call the Helpline, GU won’t necessarily know that there is a problem. If you don’t email the BCA, we will have no way to keep track of the problem. If you have any questions, concerns, or other possible solutions about noise, or any other neighborhood disturbance, please email [email protected]. 1. Your contact info so we can respond to you. 2. Date, time, and address (to the best of your knowledge) of the disturbance. Burleith Community Fund News Continued from page 3 The BCF Board—Edie Cecil, Walter Hillabrant, Liane Jones, and I— is grateful to everyone who has participated in these activities and provided financial support. We hope that you will consider donating to the BCF today and volunteer to help plan and execute programs. In the meantime, please open your wallets and become part of the change and improvement to our community. You can donate online or make checks payable to Burleith Community Fund, PO Box 32262, 2236 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, DC 20007. One way you can support the BCF is to donate to the call box restoration project, a new effort spearheaded by the Burleith History Group that will help beautify several intersections in Burleith as well as foster collaboration between residents and community partners. We plan to restore the five call boxes one at a time or as many as we have support for. Look for more details in the December Bell. About The Burleith Community Fund. The BCF was established to strengthen the Burleith community by promoting charitable activities, cultural enrichment, community service, and environmental improvements. At La Chaumiere in Georgetown, the food is as good as memory paints, the service is prompt and courteous, and the atmosphere more like a French country inn than a Washington power establishment. The ambiance is warm and friendly—made warmer in winter by the fireplace in the front of the restaurant. Walls are decorated with gleaming pots, pans, and kitchen utensils; the ceiling is beamed. When the restaurant is full, it can be noisy, but never so noisy that you have to shout to be heard. The food is traditionally French, not nouvelle, but classic. Brains, liver, soufflés, veal, venison, fruit tarts, snails, tripe, and onion soup are always on the menu. Begin a meal with an excellent Caesar or simple green salad, or an individual cheese soufflé, as light and delicious as can be. Or perhaps with a serving of lobster bisque, oysters, clams, baked mussels, snails, or pâté maison. The choices for main courses are extensive. A house specialty found almost nowhere else in Washington is the quenelle de brochet, a pike dumpling in a lobster sauce, available as an appetizer or a main course. It’s a rich, satisfying dish, with only a hint of fish. For fish lovers, choices include trout, a fish stew, and salmon in puff pastry. Pepper steak, duck breast, venison, and an excellent dish of veal scallopini are some of the meat dishes. The veal is described on the menu as veal in lemon butter, but the sauce that arrives is more complex, yet delicate and tasty. And, of course, there are the brains, liver, and tripe, the latter cooked with Calvados and a rarity in Washington. The weekly specials, prepared under the direction of chef de cuisine, Patrick Orange, are a crêpe filled with crabmeat in a champagne cream sauce on Tuesdays; on Wednesdays, it’s couscous with a variety of meats; and on Thursdays, it’s cassoulet Toulousain with duck confit, lamb, sausage, and cannellini beans. Desserts include profiteroles, sorbets, crème brûlée, flourless chocolate cake, Grand Marnier or chocolate soufflés, and a fabulous apple tart baked on a paper-thin pastry crust, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The lunch menu is in major part the same as dinner, with the addition of a few items, such as crab cakes and sea scallops, and with slightly lower prices. Dining at La Chaumiere, winter or summer, for lunch or dinner, is a step back in time, and a delightful step at that. La Chaumiere, 2813 M Street NW, 338-1784 Hours: Monday to Friday, 11:30 am to 10:30 pm; Saturday, 5:30 to 10:30 pm. Closed Sunday. Prices: Starters $5.75 to $17.50 (lunch), $7 to $11 (dinner); main courses $15 to $20.75 (lunch), $19 to $34 (dinner); desserts $6.25 to $11. Happenings at Hardy Middle School By Brian O’Neill and Aspen Adams, Grade 7 Day of the Dead has come to Hardy Middle School’s Spanish classes, but what is Day of the Dead? The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday where they build altars (called ofrendas) to celebrate lost family members, who are believed to come back from the dead on that one night. Day of the dead is celebrated in Mexico, from October 31 to November 2 of every year. This year, HMS students created their own altars to famous people who, sadly, aren’t with us anymore: Lisa Nicole Lopez, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Robin Williams, and Tupac. The altars included breads, candles, and photographs of the deceased. Students used face paint to depict Day of the Dead spirits. The Day of the Dead altars will be on display at parent/teacher conferences this month. www.burleith.org Ms. Whitty’s design students and Ms. Carpenter’s “trashion fashion” girls went to the Cooper-Hewitt Teen Fair at the Smithsonian’s S. Dillon Ripley Center, where they met designers from every field: fashion design, product design, architecture, interaction design, communication design, and the list goes on. Students got to talk with the designers and got advice and tips on each designer’s field. Tim Gunn, from America’s Top Model, was even there to talk with kids. This experience provided students with inside looks at different fields of design and opened them to other possibilities. It was a great experience. THE BURLEITH BELL 5 Hiking Up Your Spirits COMMUNITY By Angela Iovino Living in Burleith for 30 years, I never thought a hiking group would be so much fun and so beneficial to me. The hiking leaders make the difference! Whether sauntering along the Potomac or rambling around boulders at Great Falls, viewing Mount Vernon from Accokeek Park in Maryland or simply taking in mysterious wetlands, the Burleith hiking group is led by expert hikers Ross Schipper and Linda Brooks. someone offers you an apple. Isn't community life all about knowing your neighbors and helping out? Well, join the hiking group and your Saturdays will give you a spike in uplifting feelings. On one of our last hikes, we had three wonderful GU undergraduates along with us, and they were delighted, as were we, with all the “wild life” so close to home. The hiking group normally leaves Burleith at 9 am on Saturday once or twice a month. Ross and Linda present you with a map of the day's hike, drive you to the hike, and coordinate the extra cars if we have a big group. If you forget water, Linda shares her bottle; if your tummy rumbles, To join this Burleith Special Interest Group (BSIG), email Ross Schipper at [email protected]. Nearly 30 neighbors and GU students and staff turned out on November 1 to collect litter and trash in yards, streets, and alleyways. Thanks to Georgetown University for providing bags and trash collection, and special thanks to our local Einstein Bros. Bagels for donating coffee and bagels. Are you suffering from hip pain?
