Harding Dam Lake
ABOUT THE a rt ist
Clifton Mack from Yinjaa-Barni Art
Harding Dam Lake was our Harding River.
When we get a big cyclone our river fills up.
Clifton started painting in mid
2001, while participating in a
tertiary education course. Clifton’s
art represents his country and
its stories, bush tools, and native
flora and fauna. While expressing
his inner love for his land and
his culture using the traditional
aboriginal dotting technique,
Clifton succeeds in producing
beautiful artwork in a highly
individual style.

Our commi t m ent
Woodside and its joint venture participants in Pluto LNG are proud to again host the
Ngurra Nyingu (We Are From This Country) Exhibition in 2014. The Exhibition is one
of Pluto LNG’s cornerstone community activities, supporting Indigenous artists from
the West Pilbara to share their culture, country and stories through artwork.
Pluto LNG also supports a range of programs and resources activities identified
as important to the Traditional Custodians of the West Pilbara.
We work alongside Indigenous communities to provide opportunities that contribute
to a sustainable future. We are delivering and supporting programs in the West
Pilbara in the areas of education, training, employment, business participation,
governance, community volunteering, youth, arts and community events. Full details
of these programs are set out in Woodside’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
Additionally, Pluto LNG is committed to protect, preserve and promote the National
Heritage Listed values of the Dampier Archipelago through its Conservation
Agreement with the Australian Government.

Now in its seventh year, the Ngurra Nyingu
(We Are From This Country) Exhibition
showcases artists of the West Pilbara and
shares the stories of its people and culture.
In 2014, more than 250 artworks will
be for sale alongside a range of painted
ceramic plates and hand-carved Aboriginal
artifacts. Since 2008 almost half a million
dollars worth of artworks have been sold
with all proceeds going to the artists, their
art groups and back into the Roebourne
community.

WOGREY DREAMING [FISH DREAMING] (117x86)
This is about the times of wanting to see and hear the
stories of our ancestors. Lines go through the country
teaching cultural places but not enough understanding.
It’s within us, our culture is being destroyed…there is
nothing left to come back to.
Every time we go out to fish we call out to the ancestor
spirits to share food from the waters to feed our family.
In this way we show our respect for the land and for our
cultural ways of talking to the spirit that still walks with
us today; of knowing that we are from the country...

RAIN STONES (56x116)
In our culture, our elders would go out bush to collect
these white rain rocks to make rain. When it is so hot
our old people would get the billy can and fill it up with
water and put the rocks in the water and sing songs
- our tribal songs - and sing the rain clouds to make
storms come and rain to come down.

Through my eyes I see the markings of our ancestors.
Stories from many years ago where our ancestors
would walk far from the camp site and put stories on
rocks…these are our teaching places, where we still go
back and look and also learn about our people that were
here many years ago.

UNKNOWN TEACHING PLACES (118x105)
This land has so many places where our people would
carve their stories on rock art in the country. Now
when you come on country you see the sadness of the
unknown, of where is our teaching places of knowledge
of our people…it is lost from no respect for culture and
country.

These are the flowers of the Pilbara…the blooming
beautiful colours that shine on the wild flowers and
make it so pretty that each time we go out bush we see
the purple Mulla Mulla flowers that grow wild through
the country that I call home, the Pilbara.

DRY COUNTRY (30x30)
One morning when we was sitting outside an old lady
came and told us about the snake in the sky that was
crossing the land to go to the sea…the old lady would
tell us about the stories of the two snakes that fight in
the sky for the lands and water holes.
Our Millstream way, during the dry season the creek
beds dry up. Only the river stays full. You can see where
the creeks used to be, and where the water will flow

The Warlu is part of the Yindjibarndi dreaming. It is a big
sea snake name Barrimirndi, who came from the sea at
Coral Bay and went across the land. The trails he carved
out made waterways. Barrimirndi got angry with two
boys who caught and cooked a Gurdarnkurdarn [Mulga
Parrot] and he went underground to hunt them. That’s
how he made the Fortescue River. We believe the spirit
serpent still lives in that same rock pool he created at
Nhanggangunha, and that you must approach it in the
correct way or you will be harmed.

DESERT BANANA (70x55)
BRABUNGII [WATER PYTHON DREAMING] (120x70)
Traditionally the bush banana has been a great source
of food and nutriment for our people. You can eat both
the pods [flowers] and the banana itself and has been
used as a basic food supply. They grow on vines along
riverbanks but will also grow in spinifex country. They
are refreshing and juicy to eat raw or you can cook them
in the coals.
The python looks after the permanent pools. He keeps
the water ways alive and green.

and hunted, where the trees still hold the story, with
their scars of gathering of wild honey. My Bujarhali is

passed down to generation stopping at the male born,
this system identifies ones skin colour and ones role in
