Law enforcement and first-responder agencies from all over California participated in the solemn show of solidarity, coming from as far away as San Luis Obispo, Riverside County, Inyo County, and even Sparks, Nevada. By Linda Harper Sacramento Region, CA (MPG) - Year after year, Bill McAnally Racing Promotions (BMRP) strives to bring the thrill of NASCAR racing to Roseville in grand fashion. This year was no exception as the recent Toyota NAPA Auto Parts 150, held at the All American Speedway in Roseville, was a huge success. Recordsetting car counts and an outstanding fan turnout made for a spectacular night of nationally televised racing. This marked the 7th consecutive year that BMRP has hosted the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at the AAS 3/4 mile track. It continues to be the largest attended single-day event to impact Placer County, according to Placer Valley Tourism. The event generates millions of dollars for Placer County, and, most importantly, it benefits the Placer Breast Cancer Endowment and UC Davis Cancer Research Center. “The NASCAR K&N Pro Series at the All American Speedway is an event we look forward to each year,” said Donna Dotti, director of sales for Placer Valley Tourism. “Racing teams and spectators travel from all over California and Nevada for this race, generating multi-night hotel stays and boosting our county’s economy. We have worked with Bill McAnally and his team since 2008 and can always count on them for a great evening of racing!” In 2013, the K&N Pro Series West raised $20,000 to assist in funding a fulltime chair in the UC Davis Cancer Research Center. This year, the bar was raised even higher. NASCAR and the racing community came together and raised $25,000 for the Endowment, helping them continue to fight the battle to end breast cancer. “The members of the Placer Breast Cancer Endowment are grateful for the generosity and tremendous support that Bill McAnally and his team have provided over the past two years to help find a cure for breast cancer through research at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center,” said Carol Garcia, co-founder and chairperson of the Placer Breast Cancer Endowment. The success of the 2014 Fall Classic can be attributed to the work of a community banded together to produce and participate in a great event for a great cause. Countless volunteers and sponsors from throughout the valley came together to bring a night of racing many will long remember. Approximately 100 cars packed into the pit area of All American Speedway. The premier event, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, showcased 22 entries on the roster, while the Pacific Challenge Series Late Models brought 40 talented teams to Roseville. As sad as an event as this is to bring us all together, it’s very heartfelt to see this all happen.” Patrick Fintel of Sacramento County was present for the entire half-hour long procession to honor the sacrifice made by Deputy Oliver and his family. “I came to show respect to the fallen officers and their family and to let them know that we’re all thinking about them,” said Fintel. “It is very important to come out and support our community and law enforcement.” Donna Martinez of Placer County had a more personal inspiration. Her husband is a Sacramento County Sheriff officer. “The community support, I think it’s fabulous,” she said. “Oftentimes you don’t realize how big your community is or how much they care about your officers until something like this happens, which is unfortunate. By Jeff Donlevy North Highlands, CA (MPG) - Saturday, October 25th saw the return of the North Highlands Jubilee hosted by the Rotary Club of Foothill-Highlands. Weather played a big role in the event with the morning rain clearing in time for the set up by the Pacific High School JROTC cadets. The day turned out to be a wonderful fall day at Freedom Park in North Highlands filled with fun, laughter, and tantalizing aromas from a wide variety of great food. This year’s Jubilee saw an estimated crowd of 3,000+ attendees with families and couples, young and old, enjoying all the festivities. The Rotary club has posted event photos and videos on their website and on the new North Highlands Jubilee 2014 Facebook page. The event started with Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters’ welcoming remarks and request that all attendees join her in a moment of silence to pay tribute to Fallen Sacramento County Deputy and North Highlands POP Officer Danny Oliver who was killed in the line of duty the day before the event. Supervisor Phil Serna recognized the efforts of the Rotary club and local volunteers who helped organize the event. The Rotary club relied on the dedicated support of volunteers including 35 members from the Pacific High School JROTC led by Command Sergeant Major Jesse Topasna, the Antelope High School Interact Club (high school level of Rotary), CSUS ROTARACT (college level of Rotary), and over 30 residents from Serna Village who helped with setup and running the games in the Kid’s Zone. Finally, long-standing North Highlands community member Jim Simpson with the Visions Task Force and VFW Post 4647 was instrumental with logistics in directing the setup and cleanup of the event. Over 80 local companies and community resources provided information on services and healthcare to the attendees. Volunteer Kathy Cooper was instrumental in coordinating all the vendors and booths. These included Rotary, Kaiser Permanente, North Highlands Recreation and Parks District, State Farm, Robinsons Taekwondo, Hydrex Pest Control, Briggs Roofing, Covered California, and many others. The Country Club Lions Club provided vision testing to over 40 North Highlands residents. Entertainment Chairperson Pastor Juanita Mason from the Antelope Upper Room Ministries organized a full line up of fun and entertainment by 12 local groups including the CCAA Dragon Jazz Band, Taptastic, North Highlands Parks and Recreation Cheerleaders, and Tina B and Soul Line Dancers. The Pacific High School JROTC set up their obstacle training course with the highlight being an 80-foot Zip Line for kids to fly through the trees of Freedom Park. The event concluded with a live performance by the Antelope High School Titan Marching Band, recently selected to represent California in the 2015 National Independence Day parade in Washington, D.C. The 115 members surrounded the park’s main play structure and performed to the remaining attendees at the Jubilee. The Antelope High School Band has set up a “GoFundMe” site to help raise money to travel to the D.C. event. This year’s North Highlands Jubilee was sponsored by Supervisors Susan Peters and Phil Serna, Recycling Industries, Safe Credit Union, Kaiser Permanente - Thrive, Wal Mart, SMUD, Assembly Member Ken Cooley, Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 447, Laborers Local 185, the North County Messenger, McClellan Park, Umpqua Bank, Edward Jones, River Ridge Realty, Republic Services, and Capital City Recycling. The Rotary club was delighted to revive the North Highlands Jubilee this year and is looking forward to hosting it again next year. It is tentatively scheduled at Freedom Park on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. We all get tempted, need wisdom and guidance for decisions, need comfort when we’re sad, need help sharing the things of God with others, and need peace when we’re worried. All these things can be realized through memorizing Scripture. I know of no other single spiritual exercise as powerful as memorizing God’s Word. No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your spiritual walk is strengthened. Your attitudes and outlook change. Your confidence soars! Your faith will grow stronger. Decision making and sharing what God is doing in your life will become easier. All this happens through memorizing Scripture. You may be thinking, “I’m not disciplined enough!” Remember discipline is “delayed gratification”. That’s all it is. I do the difficult now to enjoy the benefits later. If you understood the benefits of Scripture memorization, you would have no problem memorizing a verse a week. If you’re not memorizing Scripture, it just means that you don’t yet understand the tremendous benefits. Some of you are saying, “I just can’t memorize anything.” Baloney! We remember what is important to us. I know guys who can give you batting averages of every S.F. Giants player! I know teenagers who can quote the top ten for the last five years. I know ladies that can give you recipes or the phone numbers of their friends. You remember what’s important to you. If you’re interested in spiritual strength and power then you’re going to be able to do it. How important was it to David? Psalm 119:72 “The law you gave me means more to me than all the money in the world.” That’s how important God’s Word ought to be to us. So how do you do it? You can memorize during your quiet time. Another good time is when you’re exercising. I like to do it while I’m waiting in a line at the store or in spare moments. Many times I’ll take a scripture verse written on a little card or tag and I’ll work on it, memorize it, speak it out loud or whisper it. At bedtime is a good time so you go to sleep thinking spiritual thoughts. There are three major keys to memorizing scripture: The first key is to review. Go over and over it. The second key to memorizing scripture is to review. The third key is to review. Say the verse reference before and after. The hardest part to remember is the reference, the address. So say it at the start and at the end. Read the verse aloud many times. You memorize by saying it aloud. You don’t memorize things by reading it. You memorize things because your ear is a large factor with what you memorize. Memory is a skill you can learn. It’s a muscle you can strengthen. In fact, memorizing Scripture will cause your brain to have a stronger memory in other areas. Study after study has shown this. Most important, Jesus Christ will help you. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. By the way, that verse would be a great verse to memorize. Pastor Ray New Beginnings Church YOU’RE INVITED, Sunday service at 10 am “We Do Church Differently” www.NBC4U.org H School’s on the Horizon Dear Dave, My husband will be leaving his full-time job in a year so that he can go back to school full-time and finish his degree. We’ve both agreed this is what we want to do, but it means that we’ll go from a yearly income of $90,000 to $45,000. We’ll have tuition assistance from my job and his veteran’s stipend to help pay for things, plus we’re debtfree except for our house. But in this scenario, once we complete Baby Step 3 should we move directly to Baby Step 4 or continue saving? - Erin Dear Erin, I think this is a good plan, as long as the two of you are on the same page and you’re willing to save like crazy for the next year and beyond. Even with help from your employer and his stipend you’ll still have some expenses, so you’ll have to be ready. Once you complete Baby Step 3, which is having three to six months of expenses set aside as an emergency fund, Baby Step 4 is usually starting to invest 15 percent of your income toward retirement. In this case, while he’s finishing his degree, you’re not investing for retirement directly but you are investing in your husband and your future together. That’s a great investment, by the way. As long as he’s studying something that has marketplace application, you’re setting the stage for him to make back the money put into his degree and much more. If that’s the plan, and he’s not off pursuing a Ph.D. in something like German polka history, you two are making a great investment. So work hard now, cut all the corners you can and pile up money so you two can get through his time in school! - Dave Selling a Car with a Lien Dear Dave, How do you sell a vehicle with a lien amount that’s higher than the actual value of the car? - Miranda Dear Miranda, First, you have to find a way to cover the difference between the amount of the lien and what you can get for the car. Let’s look at an example. If the car is worth $15,000, and you owe $18,000, that would leave you $3,000 in the hole. How do you get out of that car? The bank holds the title, and until you give them the payoff amount of $18,000, you’re not getting the title. The easiest and simplest way would be if you had $3,000 on hand to make up the difference. But if someone comes along and buys the car from you for $15,000, you’ve got to be able to cover the remaining $3,000, right? Barring the best-case scenario where you actually have the money, you could go to a local bank or credit union and borrow the remaining $3,000. I hate debt, but being $3,000 in the hole is a lot better than $18,000 in the hole. Then, you could turn around and pay back the $3,000 quickly. After that, you’d give the total amount owed to the bank. They would give you the title, and you sign it over to the new owner. That’s how it works! - Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. H with Mary Jane Popp ENERGIES OF LOVE PART II If you remember last time on POPPOFF, I shared the four “Energetic Stress Styles” that I got from Donna Eden and Dr. David Feinstein they covered in their book “The Energies of Love.” Donna is a pioneer in energy medicine and David is a clinical Psychologist. They claim they have garnered experience from their couple’s workshops that are keys to a fulfilling partnership. I promised you some practical tips to fire up that relationship, so no more talk, here they are. 1) HUG OFTEN. Hugs get your positive energies to intermingle and meld. Relaxing even into a six-second full-body embrace increases serotonin levels, leaving you feel closer and, if you were having a disagreement, less irritable. 2) GIVE YOUR PARTNER A SPINAL FLUSH. Reflex points that impact every one of your body’s major energy pathways are situated along the spine. They go into a detailed description of what to do next, but not enough time here. But it’s in the book. 3)SUPPORT THE PRODUCTION OF OXYTOCIN. Energy techniques can influence your hormone levels. We know sex produces oxytocin, but so can this one-minute technique. It begins by breathing slowly and deeply as you draw your hands up from your pubic bone until you get to the center of your chest. Before you exhale, move your hands up and out toward your sides as if you were tracing a heart above and around your breasts. Slowly exhale as you being your hands back toward your pubic bone, completing the tracing of a large heart over your torso. Repeat a few times and finish by drawing your hands up the center of your chest and holding them over your heart for two breaths. 4) STRETCH. When you feel stale or tense, stand and imagine an invisible rope hanging down over your head. Reach up and pull it down with one hand and then the other, alternating hands for at least a minute. 5) HOOK UP. If you are feeling disconnected from yourself or your partner, place the middle finger of one hand on your “third eye” and the middle finger of your other on your navel. Gently press both fingers inward, pull them upward, and hold at least three deep full breaths. 6) SCAN FOR WHAT YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT YOUR PARTNER AND STATE IT. Often! 7) USE A GENTLE OPENING FOR TOUGH TOPICS. The way you bring up a delicate topic will have an immediate impact on your partner’s biochemistry and thus the energy that is activated in each of you and between you. Wells Fargo ome for the Holidays 8) KEEP YOUR ENERGIES MOVING IN A CRISS-CROSS PATTERN. Under stress, your energies lose the natural crossover configuration that supports best thinking. Place either hand on its opposite shoulder and press hard behind the shoulder with your fingers. Drag your hand over your shoulder, maintaining pressure. Continue with less pressure now, to your opposite hip. Repeat two or three times. Shift to other side. 9) BALANCE YOUR ENERGIES RATHER THAN BATTLING YOUR PARTNER. If tension begins to rise between you and either calls for a cease fire, you should both…by ironclad pre-agreement…stop the argument, mid-sentence if necessary. Then, immediately set about shifting your energies. Saturday, Dec 13 at 8:00 PM Sacramento Memorial Auditorium 1515 J Street, Sacramento Special Guest Artist Julie Miller, Mezzo, Lyric Opera of Chicago 10) GET CURIOUS ABOUT YOUR PARTNER’S STRESS RESPONSE STYLE. Rather than judging your partner or going into a defense mode, give your partner the benefit of the doubt. (What’s a Flybaby? It’s a person who follows the nationally known woman who helps women get organized via the internet. She wears purple as do many of her followers. I happen to be her mentor.) How could I miss this follower in the airport? She had a purple Flylady office in a bag, (sort of a “mobile desk), was wearing purple and was working on deskwork. I went over to her and said, “I recognize your office in a bag, have you read Sink Reflections (Flylady’s book)?” Fifteen minutes later she ran out of breath from espousing her joy and gratitude for Flylady! Then she asked me if I was a Flybaby and I said, “Well, not exactly, but I’m the reason you’re one.” She looked a little confused so I told her this story. My sister and I wrote a book called Sidetracked Home Executives: from pigpen to paradise in 1977. We were slobs (SLOB stands for Spontaneous, Lighthearted, Optimistic and Beloved) and we reformed. That little book was the first “get organized” book on the market written by two people who had been desperately disorganized and turned the situation around 180 degrees. It was an overnight success (well it took about a year) and we were whisked around the country to appear on hundreds of television and radio shows. We met stars and got to play with Oprah many times, who, by the way, is a SHE (Sidetracked Home Executive). Then we wrote a book called The Sidetracked Sister’s Happiness File and that’s how Flylady comes onto the scene. That book is about using 3x5 cards to help a person be happier. Marla (that’s Flylady’s real name) was reading that book in bed with her now ex-husband, when she started giggling. Her husband said, “What’s so funny?” So she read the excerpt to him (I’ll include it in this essay) and he said, “That’s not funny at all, that’s disgusting.” She realized at that moment that this marriage was not working; that this man didn’t have a sense of humor and she divorced soon after “the reading.” I know this story because Marla called our office sometime in the early 90s, I happened to answer the phone and she told me what had happened. We’ve been friends for almost 20 years and we’ve helped each other and lifted each other up throughout the time we’ve been blessed to know each other. Our mutual selflessness has given us both an ability to help disorganized women learn to be organized not to please someone else, but to please themselves. Our message has always been laced with love and gratitude and that’s what has fed our friendship. Now I’ve told you that my book changed Marla’s life in a radical way, but Marla turned around and changed, not only my life but my husband’s life in a drastic way! Almost four years ago, I received a book in the mail as a surprise gift from Marla. It was entitled, Why We Get Fat and What We Can Do About It, by Gary Taubes. That book put us on the most healthful track we could ever be on! Because of that book, we don’t count calories, we don’t gain weight AND we are happier! Yes, that’s one of the main changes that happened when we began a high fat, low carbohydrate diet. Probably because we are NEVER hungry so we aren’t starving our brains of the nutrients a high fat diet gives them. I did have to get a new physician who understands the science behind a Paleo diet and she told me that when we eat more fat our brains thrive! She also believes that the epidemic of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia are directly related to the low fat craze mainstream medicine and our government has pushed down our throats since the 60s. She should know, she’s also a psychiatrist. So I can say, “Because of Marla we have no sugar in our house,” (except for a one-pound box that’s nowhere near empty, because it’s used for when company wants sugar in tea or coffee). (I did have a very small piece of wedding cake a couple years ago and I had a hangover like I had in my younger days of drinking too much.) Here’s that excerpt. We [my sister and I] spent a lot of our time in our room. We avoided having to go downstairs, because when Mom would see us, she’d think of things for us to do…like housework. We invented ways to stay self-contained upstairs. Having no bathroom up there posed a problem until we thought of using the window. We opted for the windowsill above the dining room, facing the secluded canyon. Sitting on the edge with our feet outside the window, we watched the trickles as they flowed down the mossy sloping roof out of sight. Our parents never knew until years later, when Dad installed a TV antenna on the roof and was puzzled by the two distinct paths carved out of the green moss. He told Mom that it was strange that the moss was only dead in two strips. To see what Pam’s got up her cyber-sleeve, check out www. cluborganized.com. Want to get organized? Join the club! When pudding is made right — just the way your grandma used to — it’s made with real ingredients like milk and eggs, cooked slowly until it’s creamy and delicious. In your pantry, you’ve got crunchy cookies, pretzels and nuts. Fresh and frozen fruit are always good to have on hand. Even canned and shelfstable packs of tropical fruits can top your pudding. Before you know it, you’ll be seeing surprising pudding pairings everywhere you look. With a little creativity, you could have a unique pudding snack every day of the week.
